Our Alumni League is strong and well-positioned to continue providing support to the USC NROTC Midshipmen. During 2006 we are tackling a number of challenges to make your League even better:

• Recruiting New Officers and Board Members – there are currently several positions open for League officers and members of the Board of Directors, including VP of Communications and “Log” editor; VP of Information Technology; and Senior VP & Decade Coordinator. These positions offer an opportunity to “give back” to the program from which we all graduated, be involved with the current battalion Midshipmen, and have some FUN! If you have an interest, please give me a call (949) 636-0603 or drop me an email ([email protected]).

• Member Database – we continue to be challenged to receive timely, accurate listings of our NROTC alumni from the University computer systems to use for mailings and member contact. This has been an ongoing issue for years and we are working with staff from the School of Policy, Planning and Development (SPPD) to develop a better, more efficient way to access the alumni database.

• Electronic version of “the Log” – we are investigating the option of members choosing an electronic version of the “the Log” instead of a mailed hardcopy. We will also post an electronic copy on our Alumni League website for archival purposes.

• Alumni League Website – updating, expanding and refreshing our website for the use of our members. The address of our website is: http://uscnrotc.org/ Our webmaster – Major Marcia Keuhl, USMC (Ret) – continues to input member data and information that is submitted to her. She can be reached at: [email protected]

• Computer Lab Upgrades – ongoing support and investment in the Computer Lab that is used by members of the battalion. We recently replaced some older PCs and upgraded all the systems with flat panel displays. These PCs get a hard and constant workout by the midshipmen and we will continually assess needs for newer technology as we go forward.

• Field Trips – we are planning several “field trips” during the year to visit Navy, Marine Corps and defense contractor facilities in the southern California area. The Board recognizes that many of you still work, are on active duty or are out of the immediate area, but we will try to get out the word to those who may be able to attend.

I also want to offer my heartfelt thanks and gratitude on behalf of all members of the NROTC Alumni League to Dr. Bryan S. “Bill” Stevens. Bill is the father of “the Log,” and has been the editor and publisher since its inception many years ago. He has decided to retire and give someone else the opportunity to produce our semi-annual communications for you. So a hearty thanks to you Bill for a job WELL DONE! The legacy and hard work of our Founder’s Group from the 1940s continues to be a roadmap forward for those of us now guiding the direction of the NROTC Alumni League. With your continued help and contributions of dues and “extras,” we will be able to increase our support to the Midshipmen of the Trojan battalion. If you have any ideas, comments, concerns, please let me know. I am looking forward to a great year! Fight On!

COMMANDING OFFICER’S REPORT

Col. A. “Rocky” Morrison, USMC Commanding Officer & Professor of Naval Science University of Southern California Since arriving on the USC campus last fall, I continue to be impressed by the ongoing support by the NROTC Alumni League for our midshipmen. The Trojan battalion currently numbers 71 top quality men and women, and in May we commissioned 13 new officers that are heading to the fleet. Our Drill team recently competed in the national competition, held this year at the University of Colorado. The location shifted from Tulane, which is still recovering from the

effects of hurricane Katrina. The Trojan Drill Team, led by Midn 1/c Derrick Rey, did an outstanding job, placing 3rd overall in Platoon Drill and 3rd in the Color Guard competition. The Trojan Battalion completed a rigorous inspection from the Officer Development Inspector General. According to the lead inspector, this is the best NROTC unit that he has ever inspected! My hat’s off to the entire staff, from the XO to the Officer Instructors and civilian employees – simply outstanding! The inspection team was also impressed with Alumni support and participation. My thanks to all the “Old Trojans” who continue to support and mentor these outstanding men and women. With the spring semester completed, the seniors who were commissioned are now heading to the fleet. My Executive Officer – CDR Angus McColl – is retiring this summer after 24 years of Naval service. Angus has been the guy “making things happen” for the last 4 years at SC, and we all wish him well on his next adventure. LT Tony DeCastro, one of my Officer Instructors, will be departing soon for a one year tour of duty in Iraq, to return in July 2007. The Department of the Navy has reduced the number of NROTC scholarships for “high cost” schools like USC, so we are slimming down from 25 annual scholarships to 15. This means that the competition for spots in the Trojan Battalion will be even harder in coming years. If you happen to be on campus, stop by the unit and say hello…the midshipmen always enjoy meeting and talking with our alumni. Semper Fi…

CDR McColl’s relief will be CDR Rommel Esteves, USN. He is a surface nuclear officer, and is reporting from a billet as XO of the Nuclear Propulsion Mobile Training Team on the staff of Commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific Fleet (COMNAVAIRPAC). This team conducts training for the Engineering Departments of nuclear powered aircraft carriers in the Pacific Fleet (NIMITZ, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, JOHN C. STENNIS, and RONALD REAGAN) plus USS KITTY HAWK. He previously served as an Officer Instructor at USC, and that he holds a Master’s Degree from USC, so he is very familiar with the Trojan NROTC unit and the SC Campus.

USC NROTC CHALLENGE COINS

In recent years the “Challenge Coin” has become very popular in the various branches of the military and for collectors of military memorabilia. The USC NROTC unit has developed its own challenge coin, which is available for purchase by our NROTC alumni. On one side of the bronze coin are the Navy and Marine Corps crests superimposed on an American flag. The other side has the USC seal. The story of “Challenge coins

8

goes back to World War I, as detailed in the following story: “During World War I, American volunteers from all parts of the country filled the newly-formed flying squadrons. Some were wealthy scions attending colleges such as Yale and Harvard who quit in mid-term to join the war. In one squadron, a wealthy lieutenant ordered medallions struck in solid bronze and presented them to the members of his unit. One young pilot placed the medallion in a small leather pouch that he wore around his neck. Shortly after acquiring the medallion, the pilot’s aircraft was severely damaged by ground fire while on a patrol flight. He was forced to land behind enemy lines and was immediately captured by the Germans. In order to discourage his escape, the Germans took all his personal identification except for the small leather pouch around his neck. In the meantime, he was taken to a small French town near the front. Taking advantage of a bombardment one night, he escaped. However, he was without personal identification. He succeeded in avoiding German patrols by donning civilian attire and reached the front lines. With great difficulty he crossed no-man’s land and eventually stumbled onto a French outpost. Unfortunately saboteurs had plagued the French in the sector. They sometimes masqueraded as civilians and wore civilian clothes. Not recognizing the young pilot’s American accent, the French thought him to be a saboteur and made ready to execute him. He had no identification to prove his allegiance, but he did have the leather pouch containing his squadron medallion. He showed the medallion to his would-be executioners and one of his French captors recognized the squadron insignia on the medallion. They delayed the execution long enough to confirm his identity. Instead of shooting they gave him a bottle of wine. Back at the squadron, it became tradition to ensure that all members carried their medallion or coin at all times. This was accomplished through a “challenge” in the following manner – a challenger would ask to see the medallion. If the challenged could not produce the medallion, they were required to buy a drink of choice for the member who challenged him. If the challenged member produced the medallion, then the challenging member was required to pay for the drink. The tradition continued throughout the war and for many years after the war while surviving members of the squadron were still alive. This tradition continues with today’s challenge coin. Many Navy and Marine Corps units, as well as Army and Air Force units’ present coins struck to represent their ship or unit logo, to members of the unit, to visiting dignitaries and to community leaders.” To get your USC NROTC Challenge coin, visit the “Ship Store” button on our website (http://uscnrotc.org/) for ordering details. The coins are $10 each, with proceeds of the sales benefiting the Midshipmen’s Fund of the Trojan battalion. Get yours today.

NEW NAVY UNIFORMS

The Chief of Naval Operations instituted a new task force in 2004 – “Task Force Uniform”- to evaluate all uniforms of the Navy, and make recommendations for improvements. After extensive surveys of Navy personnel, both officer and enlisted, some new uniforms are being tested and will be implemented in the coming years. These new uniforms are being met with mixed reaction by many who say that they look more like Marines or Army and not like a Naval service. The new Navy Working Uniform (NWU) – shown at the left - which will be worn by all Navy enlisted and officer personnel from E-1 to O-10, will be the primary working uniform for all Navy communities and duties, including watchstanding, and is designed for wear off the base. The uniform is a camouflage pattern of blue, deck grey and haze grey and replaces current utilities, wash khaki, coveralls,

woodland green, aviation green, winter working blue and all tropical working uniforms. The new Service Uniform for enlisted personnel (E-1 to E-6) will be worn year round, and will consist of a khaki short sleeve shirt (as currently worn by officers and chiefs), black trousers, black web belt, black shoes, and black garrison cap. Metal rank insignia will be worn on the shirt collar and garrison cap. This uniform will replace the Summer White and Winter Blue uniforms. It appears that the enlisted blue “crackerjack” dress uniform will remain for E-1 to E-6 personnel. The Task Force Uniform will also look at options regarding officer’s service uniforms. There is even a proposal to bring back the Service Dress Khaki uniform for officers. Time will tell…
