The LOG Volume 45, Issue 3, March 2018
Saint Lucie Sailing Club Incorporated April 4, 1975
From the Commodore
We had a busy time in February.
The Blessing of the Fleet Parade and raft
up in Kitching Cove and the Sweetheart
Regatta were both well attended and a lot
of fun. See more, later in The Log.
In March we have the annual Don
Ellis regatta in the North Fork as well as
the St Patrick’s Day social. In addition to
these we’re trying something entirely
new. Capt Karen Hermanson will be
conducting our first ever on the water
man overboard exercise.
How many of us can say we’ve
actually had to haul a person out of the
water and onto our boat? Well, on March
24th we’ll be giving it a try. This should
prove to be quite a valuable experience.
Details at the March meeting, and later in
The Log.
Speaking of the March meeting,
Rear Commodore Brian Epperson has
arranged for the weather briefer from the
US Coast Guard Auxiliary 59 in Stuart to
come and talk to us about weather
pertaining to sailboats and sailing. Should
be interesting.
Also, Asta Poirier has completed the
2018 Roster. This will be available at the
March meeting. Be sure to come and pick
up your copy.
Meanwhile, Let’s Have Fun On The
Water!

Blessing Of The Fleet Joe Sawyer
On February 10th the SLSC
participated in the 48th annual blessing of
the fleet on the North Fork of the St Lucie
River. As usual we had a great turnout of 13
boats for the parade. This continued our
history of excellent support for this
traditional observance. The weather
cooperated and we had a spectacular line
of sailboats leading the procession south.
Everyone had a full crew on board. There
must have been over 50 SLSC folks out on
the water.
Following the boat parade, about half
of our fleet hosted sail and headed back
north to Kitching Cove for a raft up and pot
luck refreshments. As usual, the SLSC chefs did not disappoint. The food was awesome.
Included in the cruise and raft-up were Andiamo, Paul Loschaivo’s boat, flying that
beautiful flag, along with Tom Cat, Shoo Fly, Sloop John B, Wild Rice, SamSarah, which
didn’t stay, and Skeeter. Skeeter arrived a little late, having had to tow Bound Away home
after she experienced an engine issue. No worries, though. The Bound Away crew simply
transferred to Skeeter and joined the party anyway. Thanks to Capt. Tom Mestrits for his
able assistance.
The day following the Blessing, a change of
watch party was held at Circle Bay Yacht Club. The
SLSC is responsible for running the Blessing next
year so I was installed as the BOTF Commodore for
2019. Wish me luck!

Surveyor’s Trivia
Last month, Brian Epperson asked: How many
things are wrong with this shackle? That’s a really
good question.
But… He didn’t get your answer yet. So we are
running this again. You might get a six-pack for a
really good answer.
Come ON!!! Give it your best effort:
SLSC Racing News
Racing Scuttlebutt - Mike Brescher
On February 17, 2018 we held our annual Sweethearts’ Regatta. This is a race where
there must be a female helmsperson throughout the course.
We had a good turnout of six boats, and great weather for sailing and just being out
on the River. At the start, the wind did not show up as planned so we had a fifteen-minute
postponement. The wind did arrive for a beautiful start. The wind velocity steadily
increased except for some spots up the North Fork, where there were islands of flat calm.
It turned out to be a very challenging and beautiful day on the River. The ladies
handled it like pros. The trophies for the J&M Fleet were presented at the After Race Party
at Deck Restaurant :
1st -- Shoo Fly with Nancy Pickuet 1:49:56
2nd -- Whisper with Barbara Jacobs 1:52:09
3rd -- Warlock with Anne Vance 1:53:18
4th -- Freedom with Carolyn Zytaruk 2:01:11
5th -- Wild Rice with Asta Poirier 2:13:04
6th -- Voyager with Joanne Swann & Laura Kay Darvill DNF

Our Club’s ‘Matchup’ Google spreadsheet has helped many Crew members connect with Skippers to get a ride on boats for the upcoming weekend. But you can also:
* Connect with a cruising Captain to go for a leisurely sail during the week.
* See which boats are competing this weekend.
* Check your competition’s accumulated score on the monthly ‘12 Pack’ race.
* Learn the details and boat ride availability for upcoming cruises
If you don’t use it, you are missing the benefits of this valuable resource. So, here are 2 videos to help you get the most out of SLSC Matchup… 1. How to Access the Spreadsheet… http://bit.ly/SLSCaccess

St. Lucie Sailing Club to Practice ‘Man Overboard’ Drill
in St. Lucie River
- Mynders Glover
On Saturday, March 24th, our Club will be
conducting a hands-on safety course for members
in the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. The
exercise is called a ‘Man Overboard Drill (MOD)’
and will be attended by a large portion of Club
members.
Boating statistics reveal that many needless deaths, nationally, result from someone
falling off a boat in motion…mainly because the necessary safety equipment and trained
crew members are not present. SLSC has chosen to be proactive in ensuring that we, as
members, are prepared, trained, and safe!
On March 24th, Club boat owners and crew will set out onto the North Fork at pre-set
appointment times between 11 AM and 4 PM to be properly trained. The exercise is being
coordinated by experienced MOD Trainer (also Skipper and Club member), Karen
Hermanson. In addition to the Skipper and crew, each boat will have an ‘Observer’ and a
practice ‘Victim’ for the exercise. The Observer does just that…observes to make sure that
all the steps are being followed. The Victim won’t actually be in the water, but rather in a
dinghy that will be set free and simulate a person falling out of the boat.
If you are interested in participating…in any of the capacities listed above, please
contact Karen as soon as possible (if you haven’t already). Her phone number is
561.351.7727.
Karen has also prepared a 7-page guide for skippers and crew. Please ask her to
email you a copy: [email protected]
Welcome To My Club! -- Jack Molinelli, Race Captain, Fort Pierce Yacht Club We look forward to meeting SLSC members at our harborside Club in Fort Pierce. We are busy on the water, with cruising, sailboat racing and kayaking, along with a busy social calendar on land. Why not try one of our Friday Night Socials? Info: www.fortpierceyachtclub.com Sailboat races are held on the ocean outside the Fort Pierce Inlet, usually once or twice a month. Sailboat races are open to any boat – come ‘round the marks’ with us. We’ll score you in the results if you have a PRHF rating (and the club will help you get one if you don’t.) If you are interested joining any of our races, either with a boat or as crew, please contact me, [email protected] For cruising information, please contact Diane Korbey, [email protected] For kayaking, contact Christine Pennington, [email protected] See you up North!
USSCMC News - Susan Brigida
Imagine that you have 300 boats showing up this coming weekend, and each one
brings its racing team, along with families, friends, and coaches.
If you are Alan Jenkinson, who runs the US Sailing Center of Martin County (USSCMC,) you ask for help. The Center is expecting those 300 boats from all over Florida for its 2018 Optimist Sunshine State Championship. Just a few hours of your time would make a big difference.
The regattas are run largely by volunteers. BTW, you do not need to be a member of
the USSCMC to volunteer. And Alan appreciates experienced sailors but novices are great
too. Help is needed for everything from parking cars and picking up pizza to providing
spectator boats for the races.
Call the office at (772) 334-8085. The US Sailing Center is located at 1955 NE Indian
River Drive, Jensen Beach 34957.
