You are a lover of words. Somedayyou should write a book. Therestaurant fortune cookies predictionwas true, albeit a bit late for FountainValley resident and music journalistJohn M. Borack, coming as it did in

November 2010.His second book,John Lennon: Lifeis What HappensMusic, Memoriesand Memorabilia, debuted last Octo-

ber andAmazon.com hasranked it as the #1

pop culture bookand the #2 JohnLennon book overthe past few months.

Ive enjoyed writing ever since Iwas a kid and I have always lovedmusic, Borack said about his entryinto the world of music journalism.Hoping to get something published, hewrote to one of his favorite music

publications, Goldmine (a record andCD collectors magazine), back in1985. Those were the days beforee-mail," he remembered. "I wrote anold fashioned letter on an old fashioned

piece of paper and sent it off with astamp. The editor suggested sendingin some writing samples, whichBorack did. Hes now been penningCD reviews, feature articles and aregular column for Goldmine for morethan 25 years. His column, Power PopPlus, features reviews on all things

pop music and his first book, ShakeSome Action: The Ultimate Power Pop

Guide, was released in2008 and highlights 200

    of the greatest powerpop albums.

When the former editorof Goldmine approachedhim about writing amemorabilia book onJohn Lennon in 2009,Borack was overjoyed.I received the offer towrite the Lennon bookin October of 2009 andwas very excited.

Within a few weeks, however, my motherbecame seriously ill and passed away. It wasdifficult dealing withthe emotions and all thethings you go throughduring a time like that. Its a challenge to writea book under the best ofcircumstances, but whenyou have somethinglike that weighingheavily on you at thesame time . . . In a wayit made it more diffi-cult, but in a way it also

made it easier because I felt her therewith me while I was writing, tellingme Youve got to get it done. You cando it. You can do it. I know she'dhave been so excited if she had seenthe finished product.

Close friends bothinside and outsidethe music industryhelped Borack bysharing their Beatlememorabilia, con-tributing quotes fort h e b o o k , a n dencouraging himwhile he dealtsimultaneously withlosing his motherand facing a dead-line for the book.

He is particularly pleased that his circleof friends includes people from all overthe map and of all ages, and is gratifiedthat the love of musicespecially theBeatleshas built a bond between

them. Whether through Facebookmessages, texts, phone calls or e-mails,they give him strength and remind himhow proud his mom would be of hisaccomplishments. Its extremelygratifying to have your friends appreciatewhat you do and be supportive.

Examining the life of John Lennon, who would have turned 70 years oldlast October, was enlightening for Bo-rack. What impressed me most duringmy research was the reinforcement ofthe fact that John Lennon was a truerenaissance man. Singer, songwriter, rhythm guitarist, poet, peacenik, author, social

The internationally-acclaimed Huntington Library, ArtCollections and Botanical Gardens is a must visit to bask in the grandeur of 120 acres of sensational

gardens, four art galleries and a library featuring some of theWorld's greatest original books.

Founded by railroad and real estate magnate Henry E.Huntington, whose company also developed the city,"Huntington Beach," The Huntington is full of "wow" and "awe." In the Huntington ArtGallery you'll see European Artwork, such as a breathtaking 1771 French Writing Desk called"Bonheur du Jour," meaning "the happy time of the day" (when folks would write theirfriends). The magnificent piece is made out of tulipwood, sycamore, soft paste porcelain, brass and glass. There's also an 1810 Mantel Clock that still offers the correct time. The Frenchtimepiece is made out of marble, gilt bronze, biscuit porcelain and blued copper enamel.

A really cute 1880 Tea Table is spectacular. Paintings abound to the delight of your eye,

from Rogier van der Weyden's 15th Century masterpiece, "Madonna and Child"(considered by many the most important painting at The Huntington) to a wonderful 1777portrait of Karl Friedrich Abel by Thomas Gainsborough. Abel, a prolific composer, issitting at a table with his pen resting on the first bar of a new musical score. There's evenan American Art Gallery with exquisite paintings and sculptures by world-renownedFrederick Remington, Gilbert Stuart and Edward Hopper and others.

Many large size paintings, and even, boo ks, make it easy for kids and people of all agesto view the absolute magnificence of The Huntington. One of my favorite places is LibraryExhibition Hall, where you can see John James Audubon's gigantic book, "Two Birds ofAmerica," made with his original drawings from 1827-33. You'll also be astonished by areal Gutenberg Bible, the first major book printed with a movable type printing press thatstarted the Age of Books. The 42-Line Bible was printed by Jo hann Gutenberg in Mainz,Germany 1452-55. There's also Jack London's original manuscript, showing hishandwriting while creating his book, "Martin Eden," a novel about a struggling young writer.

Be sure and see the History of Science Exhibit, showing ideas that changed the world. You can look through a replica of Galileo's telescope and get a real feel for the earliestmagnified view of the night sky. You also can peer through replicas of early microscopesto get a better understanding of how scientists make their observations.

The problem you have at The Huntington is running out of time. You literally need tosee it over and over to appreciate all it has to offer. The Botanical Gardens feature more than 14,000different kinds of plants in over a dozen areas, .in-cluding Jungle, Rose, Fragrance, Chinese, Japanese,Palm, Children's, and Shakespeare. The last paystribute to the Library's collection of early editionsof Shakespeare and includes a number of plants andflowers mentioned in The Bard's plays. A smallplaque next to each of these plants quotes a line or

verse, i.e., "It was the nightingale, and not the lark, That pierc'd the fearful hollow of thineear; Nightly she sings on yond pomegranate tree..." (Romeo and Juliet, Act. III, Scene V).

If you get hungry during your visit, why not enjoy some tasty meals at the Rose GardenTea Room and Cafe. (Friendly Huntington associates on the grounds will gladly direct youto this and other areas. ) We watched our delicious chicken sandwiches prepared beforeus. A visit to The Huntington is a journey you'll always remember!

It has been said: As night falls over HuntingtonBeach car lights streak through the intersectionat Beach Blvd. and Edinger Ave, one of busiest

intersections in Orange County. Seven of theten busiest intersections in the County are onBeach Blvd.

Fact: Completed in November, the $1.3 millionBeach Boulevard signal synchronization projectcoordinated more than 70 traffic signals.

Driving along busy Beach Boulevard, withits numerous car dealerships, fast food outletsand small, medium and big box businessesmight seem, to the casual driver, to be morefree-flowing these days. Experts say, Commuters are

stopping less and traveling at a faster rate, thanks tosignal synchronization,

During sunsets, perhaps some demons appear tosome motorist in Huntington Beach... thousands ofcar lights streak through the intersection at BeachBlvd. and Edinger Ave, one of busiest intersectionsin Orange County. Have you experiences this streamof laser-like headlamps?

Fact: Seven of the ten busiest intersections in thecounty are on Beach Blvd. according to the THEORANGE COUNTY REGISTER and reporterLEONARD ORTIZ

Ortiz says..."Completed in November, the $1.3

million Beach Boulevard signalsynchronization projectcoordinated more than70 traffic signals - in-creasing travel speedsfor commuters up to 19 percent, decreasingtravel times up to 16percent and reducing thenumber of stops up to 38percent, according to theOrange County Transportation Authority. Prettyimpressive in these bottleneck times.

"With 84,000 vehicles traveling along stretches of

Beach Boulevard every day, this allows morevehicles to travel farther in less time, without majornew road construction," said OCTA Chair PatriciaBates. Ortiz continues to point out..."Fifteen of thebusiest 25 intersections in Orange County are alongBeach Boulevard, according to 2008 OCTA figures.Of the five busiest intersections, three are inWestminster and two in Huntington Beach.

Officials say signal synchronization helps reducestop-and-go traffic patterns and improve travel flowby coordinating green lights for a series of signals. When implemented, drivers can often pass througha number of green lights before stopping.

Beach Boulevard, running north-south throughmost of Orange County, isone of the main connections between north OrangeCounty and the beachcommunities of HuntingtonBeach and Newport Beach. Itspans almost 23 miles fromPacific Coast Highway toWhittier Boulevard in LaHabra. From Pacific CoastHighway to Imperial High-way, Beach Boulevard isconsidered a Smart Street aroad with synchronizedtraffic signals, added lanesand bus turnouts.

    The Beach Boulevard

project is part of the Traffic Light SynchronizationProgram that targets 153 miles of arterials and 533signalized intersections. The program is fundedthrough Proposition 1B a $20 million measure ear-marked for transportation projects and Measure M,a half-cent sales tax. Synchronizing work is underway at Orangethorpe Avenue, Brookhurst Street,Edinger Avenue, and El Toro Road."

We are about to see if this synchronization bonanza can deal with Population explosion...Synchronization + Populization = Congestive

    Artery Failure...or perhaps not.

Five hundred new homes here, 500 new homesthere, 400 new homes over there, a couplehundred more on that corner...pretty soon youhave 3,500 new homes all in one corridor, allconverging on one great synchronized pathwayto glorious beaches, theme parks, retailers, etc.

It will be fun to watch, but I venture to say thelightening like head lamps pictured above willbe more of a blur as time travel on Beach Blvd.continues to increase...what better name than onelocal business association has coined...BeachBlvd of Cars... how Freudian, if not frightening.

Is the Beach Boulevard drive better;better than what... a poke in the eye?

Amtrak has a new express train between San Diegoand Los Angeles Residents in five Orange Countycities where trains usually stop will need to go to

another station to ride the rails on this one.The express train stops in Solana Beach, Oceanside,

Irvine and Anaheim, eliminating five regular stops San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, Santa Ana,Orange and Fullerton. Amtrak says its new daily express train service from San Diego to Los Angeles, which skips five usual stops in Orange County, is 15 to 20 minutes faster than a regular trip.

Amtrak launched the service Tuesday, announcing that the limit ed-stop train will leave SanDiego at 7:05 a.m. daily, arriving in Los Angeles at 9:33 a.m. Other Amtrak trains take 15 to 20minutes longer, Amtrak said in a news release. That's like saying save an hour on your nextflight to New York...it's a non-stop. Passengers can return to San Diego on any of Amtrak'sregular trips later in t he day.

activist, husband, father John was all of thoseand more. He packed a lot of life into his 40 years, and he poured his entire heartand soul into everything he did.

Borack enjoys talking about John Lennon while promoting his latest book. Hehas been a guest on local television and radio talk shows in Orange County andLos Angeles (including KOCEs Real Orange and Foxs Good Day LA), as

well as signing books and meeting Beatlebuffs across the country, each one with

a personal Beatles story to share.

A proud husband and father, Borackis thrilled that his 12-year-olddaughter Kayla has discovered the

joy of being a Beatles fan. Hisown fascination for theBeatles also began when he

was a child. My dad bought me my firstBeatles 45 in 1967, whenI was 5-years-old: AllYou Need is Love andBaby, Youre a RichMan. I played itconstantly and my loveof the Beatles took offfrom there. Fromthen on, he couldntget enough of John,Paul, George, and

Ringo. Boracks parents were in the swap meet business and every Sunday hisdad took him to a vendor at the Mission Drive-In Swap Meet in Pomona to buynew Beatle singles and memorabilia. Although the elder Borack was not aBeatles fan himself, there was always music playing in the house. My daddefinitely fed my passion for music, Borack said. Thirty years later, John hasabout 3,000 CDs, 1,000 albums, and 2,000 45sso expansive a collection thathe built an extra room onto his home to house them.

Not only does Borack collect and write about music, he is also a songwriterand musician himself. He has played drums for LA-based pop-rock outfits suchas Kenny Howes and the Yeah, the Barry Holdship Four, the Dons, and Receiver.Currently he plays drums in the praise band at his church and records originaland cover songs with his band, the Popdudes, who will be playing at this yearsFountain Valley Summerfest and also at the 2011 Orange County Fair.

Its been a hard days night, and Ive been working like a dog . . . Those lyricscould have been written about John Boracks life. He is currently working onanother book about power pop (titled Power Pop 360), a biography of PaulMcCartney, and is readying a Popdudes CD for release in late 2011. For now, though, Beatle fans can purchase John Lennon: Life is What Happens Music,Memories and Memorabilia at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, Borders Books,or, John Borack says with a grin, from the trunk of my car.

Bill Pullman asPresident ThomasJ. Whimore in themovie Independ-ence Day

Frank McCourt may have uttered similarwords after being told that Major League Base-

ball was taking control of his Los AngelesDodgers. But unfortunately for McCourt, thisisnt a movie, and its doubtful that his outcomewill rival the one in Independence Day.

We can debate forever whether CommissionerBud Selig made the right call at the right time,

but the uniqueness of the move its never beendone before in MLB speaks volumes about the

concerns the commissioner had regarding one ofthe flagship franchises in his league; indeed, inall of sports. The Dodgers arent just a

baseball team; theyre a part of American history. This is the team that signed Jackie Robinson andchanged not only baseball, but the course of theentire country. This is the team that Walter O-Malley moved across the continent after the1957 season, breaking hearts in Brooklyn but atthe same time opening up the sport to legions of

new fans on the left coast, not to mention newsources of revenue.

The Dodgers have been privately owned formost of their existence, so financial infor mationis difficult to come by, but its not a stretch tosuggest that they are the secondmost successfulMLB franchise inhistory off the fieldin addition to beingone of the leaguesmost successfulfranchises on thefield. They were thefirst team to draw

three million fansand according to thewebsite ballparksof-baseball.com, be-tween 1959 and 1989the Dodgers led all of MLB in attendancetwenty-one times and finished second inattendance in each of the past two decades.

Selig relied on the best interests of Baseballlanguage in Article II of MLBs constitution to

justify the takeover. Based on that language, courts have given the commissioner widelatitude to act as he sees fit to protect the sport,

provided that he doesnt act in an arbitrary andcapricious manner. Transla tion: While McCourt

has a number of legalarguments at his dis-posal, in the end, theodds are heavilystacked against him.

Should McCourtfollow through onhis threat to bringlegal action againstMLB, the case is

likely to drag on formonths, perhapsyears, unless anduntil McCourt

comes to the realization that all is lost and settlesfor a buyout. McCourts buyout could be paid

by MLB or the new Dodgers owner, whoeverhe may be (yes, it will be a he). And whenthat day arrives, it will end the saddest chapterin Dodgers history, one that should neverhave happened but for the blind eye turnedon the McCourts finances by Selig andtwenty-nine MLB owners. Hopefully, nexttime theyll get it right.

    W.J. Hennigan, Los Angeles Times

say..."Space Exploration Technologiesof Hawthorne and Boeing are among

the companies sharing $269.3 million as the

agency looks for a new way to carry astronauts.

    Spacecraft

Alanna Krolikowski peers inside the SpaceX

Dragon in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Dragon

is the first privately developed spacecraft to

return from Earth orbit. (Mark Reis / Associated

    Press / April 11, 2011)

    1. NASA's fleet of aging space shuttles are

set for retirement at the end of the year, the

space agency is looking for a new way to

    carry astronauts.

    2. Recently, NASA handed out $269.3 million

to four companies to privately develop

rockets and spacecraft for what could be thenext step in manned spaceflight.

    3. Winners included Hawthorne-based rocketmaker Space Exploration Technologies

Corp., or SpaceX, and Boeing Co.,

    which develops spacecraft in

    Huntington Beach and uses rocket

engines made by Pratt & Whitney

    Rocketdyne in Canoga Park.

    4. Two others, were awarded $22million to Blue Origin, a closely

held space venture in Kent,Wash., that is owned by

    Amazon.com founder Jeff

    Bezos, and $80 million to

    Sierra Nevada Corp. of

    Sparks, Nev.

    The result is, the shuttle

    program will mothballed and

    before privately built space

    vehicles are astronaut-ready,

the U.S. will have no way totravel to the International

    Space Station other than

    shelling out $63 million

    for rides on a Russian

    Soyuz rocket.

On the other hand, the new contracts

recently awarded should be significantmilestones in NASA's plans to take advantage

of American ingenuity to get to low-Earth orbit,

so we can concentrate our resources on deep

    space exploration.

The LAT reported Boeing engineers in

Huntington Beach and Houston are working to

develop a seven-person spaceship that is

designed to fly atop a variety of rockets. The

company won $92.3 million, the largest of thefour awards, and expects the spacecraft to be

    ready by 2015.

Hennigan reports he spaceship, dubbed the

    Crew Space Transportation-100, had received

just $18 million in government investment thus

far. Boeing's performance "is an example of how

the company's innovative and experienced team

is successfully partnering with NASA in acommercial environment," Boeing program

manager John Elbon said in a statement.

Of the winners, SpaceX is the only c ompany to

    have its contender spaceflight-proven.

Again, the LAT reported In December, SpaceX

became the first private company to launch a

spacecraft into orbit and have it return intact.

The company sent up its Apollo-like Dragon

space capsule aboard its 18-story Falcon 9

rocket. The Dragon capsule was empty at

the time, but it was a technological and financialfeat that had been accomplished before only

    by government entities.

Let's keep our fingers crossed for the U.S.Space program, Bowing and Huntington Beach.

and dipped into their own walletsin order to purchase plane tickets

and other necessities that enable themto accompany him.

    Stay AwayFrom DownedPower Lines

Its not uncommon for trees and tree limbs to fall,

especially during high winds, rain and other stormy

conditions. This can cause power lines to fall as well. If

you see a power line on the ground, stay far away and

keep others away as well. Do not try to touch or

remove it. That power line may still be energized and

can be deadly to touch or go near.

Call 9-1-1 and report the situation immediately.

Also keep away from trees that have power lines going

through them. When a power line touches a tree, the

    tree may also become energized.

For more information on electrical safety, visit

Years later, Juan sends a pic-ture of himself to his birth mother.Upon receiving the picture, she tellsher husband that she wishes shealso had a picture of Ahmal. Herhusband responds, "They're twins! Ifyou've seen Juan, you've seenAhmal."

19Mahatma Gandhi, as youknow, walked barefoot most ofthe time, which produced an impres-sive set of calluses on his feet. Healso ate very little, which made himrather frail and with his odd diet, hesuffered from bad breath. This madehim (oh, man, this is so bad, it'sgood)...A super-calloused fragilemystic hexed by halitosis.

20A dwarf, who was a mystic, escaped from jail. The callwent out that there was a smallmedium at large.

21And finally, there was the per-son who sent twenty differentpuns to his friends, with the hope thatat least ten of the puns would makethem laugh. No pun in ten did.

Justin Delaney says..."Old people" - we all hope to live long enough to earnthis distinction. In some countries, the probability of living well into youreighties is much better than in others. The worldwide average for life expectancyis just a smidge over 67, with the highest and lowest countries fluctuating byover 20 years in each direction. 39 of the bottom 40 countries are located onthe African continent, and 3 of the top 5 are European micro-states. The UnitedStates ranks in at number 50, boasting a life expectancy of 78 years old.

At the bottom of the list is Angola, a country in southwestern Africa with amachete on its flag. The average life expectancy in Angola is almost 39 years

old. At the other end of the spectrum is Monaco (pictured above). Monaco is amicro-state in Europe with an extremely high standard of living. The averageperson there lives to be 89 years old. The 50 year gap between these twocountries represents the difference between yacht ownership and subsistencefarming, and every other country falls somewhere in between.
