    A hoodedarmed robber

bursts into theBank of Italy and

forces the tellers to load asack full of cash.

On his way out the doorwith the loot, one brave

customer grabs the hood and pulls itoff, revealing the robber's face.

The robber shoots the guy deadwithout hesitation!

He then looks around the bank to seeif anyone else has seen him. He seesone of the tellers looking straight athim; the robber walks over and calmly

    shoots him dead.

Everyone by now is very scared andlooking down at the floor.

"Dida anyone elsa see a my face?"calls the robber.

There fo l lows a tense minuteof silence.

    Then an elderly Italian gentleman,

looking down, tentatively raises hishand and says:

"I tinka my wife caught a glimpse"

Ah...the old days...things will neverbe the same...

    More than

    20,000 peoplerecently saw

a huge plastic-coveredrock, officially called,"Levitated Mass," on Atlantic Avenuein Long Beach's Bixby Knollsneighborhood. The awe-inspiring rock,on its journey from Riverside County tothe Los Angeles County Museum ofArt, has been a major crowd-pleaserand this community pulled out all thestops, with bands, sidewalk vendors, stilt walkers, a family dressed as theFlintstones, an empty photo frame(where you could have your picturetaken in front of the rock), deliciousfood and drink plus a media frenzyfrom TV and radio stations to print andInternet reporters.

The "Levitated Mass," created byArtist Michael Heizer, is a 340-tongranite boulder that was resting in frontof the Christian Science Reading Room

on AtlanticA v e n u e .By thetime youread this, itwill be onexhibit at

the LACMA, where viewers cansee the boulder appearing to riseas they descend through themonumental 456-foot long slotcarved into the earth. As thousands

gelled in amazement at the rock inLB, a Christian Science soloistappropriately sang "Rock of Ages"that evening. Bungy Hedley, a church

reader and author of"View from the Top ofthe Mast," said it wasappropriate that therock stop outside a

church since the KingJames version of theBible has over 170references to "rock."

The boulder here was one of the largest"rocks" ever moved since ancient times.

Blair Cohn, Bixby Knolls ImprovementAssociation, said they even had an ArtContest to paint the rock and its hugecarrying equipment from HanjinShipping. Long Beach 7th District CityCouncilman James Johnson said: "Itwas a pleasure working with theBusiness Improvement Association to

put on such an incredible event. It onlymakes sense that this national piece ofart would stop in the heart of BixbyKnolls, given the community'sreputation for always supporting thearts. This was a great day for LongBeach, and I look forward to workingwith the association to top this witheven greater events soon."

If you'd like to get involved in TheBixby Knolls Business ImprovementAssociation, you can log on to theirwebsite at: http://www.bixby-knollsinfo.com .They have a cool carshow coming in July 2012 as well asother events, such as a Monthly ArtWalk Event.

More than 350 people attendedthe recent grand re-opening ofthe Huntington Harbour Bay

Club (4121 Warner Avenue, HuntingtonBeach) enjoying delicious sample food

provided by Love at First Bite Catering& Event Planning. After six years of not

being in business, Bay Club OwnerBen Ahadpour decided to reopen the

prestigious facility after renovations, including new carpet, paint and aredesigned back patio. He eliminatedthe swimming pool and created a foun-tain, wet bar and spacious gatheringarea for parties and weddings. TheAhadpour Family has owned the buildingsince 1980. Ben's father, Ferydonne, and his mother, Doris, started the club. What is Huntington Harbour Bay Club? It's a beautiful place that can accommodate

600 people--200 in each ofthree areas inside the building. It has sensational views ofHuntington Harbour. In talkingto Ben, he informed me theclub is going to be better thanever and will even have SundayBrunches soon. Weatherly Bay

Neighbor Liz Noriega, the ResidentRealtor, said she's thrilled the spectacularsite is being used again."The Bay Club

once was the place where many fondmemories were made and that's theway it will be again," she said. If youhaven't been to the Bay Club, call(949) 280-1307 for a personal tour. Youcan log on to: http://www.huntington-

    $1,000,000,000,000When the U.S government

    speaks about a 1.7 trillion

deficit - this is the volumesof cash the U.S. Governmentborrowed in 2010 to run itself.

Keep in mind it is double stacked pallets of $100million dollars each, full of $100 dollar bills. You aregoing to need a lot of trucks to fr eight this around.

If you spent $1 million a day since Jesus wasborn, you would have not spent $1 trillion bynow...but ~$700 billion - same amount the banksgot during bailout.

    $1,000,000,000- You will need

some help whenrobbing the bank. Now we

    are getting serious!

    $15,000,000,000,000 -US national debt

(credit bill) hasjust topped the 15

    trillion 2 months beforeChristmas 2011.

Statue of Liberty seems ratherworried as United States national

debt passes 20% of the entire world's combined GDP(Gross Domestic Product). In 2011 the National Debtwill exceed 100% of GDP, and venture into the 100%+debt-to-GDP ratio tha have (bankrupting nations).

    $ 114.5 Trillion Dollars

$114,500,000,000,000. - US unfunded liabilitiesTo the right you can see the pillar of

cold hard $100 bills that dwarfsthe WTC & Empire StateBuilding - both at one pointworld's tallest buildings. If youlook carefully you can seethe Statue of Liberty.

The 114.5 Trillion dollarsuper-skyscraper is theamount of money the U.S.Government knows it doesnot have to fully fund theMedicare, MedicarePrescription Drug

    Program, SocialSecurity, Militaryand civil servant

pensions. It is the money USAknows it will not have to pay all its bills.

If you live in USA this is also your personal

credit card bill; you are responsible along with everyone elseto pay this back. The citizens of USA created the U.S.Government to serve them, this is what the U .S. Governmenthas done while serving The People.

The unfunded liability is calculated on current tax and fundinginputs, and future demographic shifts in US Population.

Note: On the above 114.5T image the size of the base of themoney pile is half a trillion, not $1T as on 15T image. Theheight is double. This was done to reflect the base of EmpireState and WTC more closely.

    Comparison of$1,000,000,000,000

    dollars to astandard-sized

American Football fieldand European Football field.

Say hello to the Boeing 747-400 transcontinentalairliner that's hiding on the right. This was until

recently the biggest passenger plane in the world.

    One TrillionDollars

    OneTrillion

    Dollars

    OneBillionDollars

$1,000,000 -Notas big of a pileas you thought, huh? Still this is92 years of work

    for the averagehuman on earth.

    One Million Dollars

$100,000,000 -Plenty to goaround foreveryone. Fitsnicely onanISO / Militarystandardsized pallet.

    One Hundred Million Dollars

    $10,000 -Enough for

    a greatvacation

or to buy aused car. Approximately one year of work

for the average human on earth.

    Consumer Reports says that

    home appliances cause an

    estimated 150,000 fires a

    year, resulting in 150

    deaths and

more than $500 million in property

    damage. A new Consumer Reports

    investigation turned up some

    disturbing findings. While some of

those fires are due to human error, a

    significant number are caused by

    defective appliances.

    Consumer Reports reviewed

    69,000 reports of house fires

    blamed on appliances

    between 2002 and 2009.

    Its investigation found at

    least 23 percent of the

    fires were clearly attribut-

    able to problems with theappliancesmechanical,

    electrical , or design

    flaws. In some instances

    the appliances turned on

    by themselves. Faulty

    appliances causing the

    most fires were ranges,

    followed by dryers, air conditioners,

    refrigerators, and dishwashers.

In the past five years, more than 7

    million dishwashers have been

    recalled because of defects that

could cause a fire. And almost 8

    million other appliances have been

    recalled for fire risks. Consumers

can find out whether an appliance

they own has been recalled by going

    to www.recalls.gov. All consumers

    should register their appliances with

the manufacturer so that they will be

notified in the event of a recall.

According to Consumer Reports, the reason for so many recalls due to

    fire hazards is because appliances

have gotten a lot more complex.

That means lots more can go wrong.

    Also many recalled products are

    being manufactured abroad, the

majority in China, and that's a real

    problem. Until appliance design and

    quality are improved, according to

    Consumer Reports, homeowners

will be left to wonder whether

appliances in their homes are safe.

    In response to Consumer Reports'

    investigation, the Association of

    Home Appliance Manufacturers said

    that "designing and manufacturing

safe products" is a top priority of its

    members. Consumer Reports says

    that homeowners should register

    new appliances with the manufacturer

so the recall notices will be received.

Also, don't run a dryer or dishwasher

overnight or when you are away

    from home. Source: WSFA

    News

    The NCAAmens basketballtournament, theover-hyped,over-com-

mercialized annual rite of spring known asMarch Madness, is upon us. While theviewing public is bombarded with a constantdiet of games, celebrations and hype, thereis a darker side to the activities that remainslargely hidden from sight.

The games rake in billions-of-dollars ayear and everyone involved in the

process the NCAA and its memberinstitutions, coaches, TV networks,

advertisers, gamblers - shares in the proceeds, except for those mostresponsible for generating the largess: Theathletes. That might not be so loathsome ifit were not for the fact the NCAA and itsmember institutions are largely failing the athleteswhen it comes to academics.

Based on the NCAAs Revenue Distribution Plan, revenue from March Madness is distributed toconferences based on their membersperformance inthe tournament over a six-year rolling period. When ateam makes the tournament one year, it results in

payments to their conference for the following six years. As an example, the 32 first round losers this year will

each earn $258,502 for their conference. That figure willswell to $1.9 million by 2017 even if those losers nevermake another tournament before then. Make the final

four this year and you could generate a total of $9.5million for your conference. The six-year financial

projections are based on a 7.86% yearly increase in payments per game,

equivalent to the average rise over the pastthree years. Not surprisingly, winners earn more than losers. Each

tournament game played, with the exception of thechampionship game, is considered a unit. Last yearschampion, the University of Connecticut, played infive games. In the previous five years combined, they played in ten games, giving them a total of 15units for 2011. Each unit was worth $239,664,meaning U Conn generated $3,594,960 for the Big

East Conference in 2011.U Conn has already been suspended from next years

tournament for failing to meet the four-year minimum

Academic Progress Rate, a formula designed by the NCAA to measure a schools graduation rate. Theminimum APR of 930 corresponds to a 50% graduationrate, not exactly an indication that academics is

prioritized over athletics. Despite the suspension, theBig East is in line to receive the value of eleven

units or approximately $3 million from the2013 March Madness distribution due to UConns tournament success between 2007-

2011, proof that crime, or in this case, unconscionable conduct, pays.

The two biggest fallaciesperpetrated by the NCAAare the dual pillars that form its foundation, theterms student-athlete and

amateurism. The reality is neitherdesignation is accurate. Players spend

more time on the court than in the classroomand are amateurs in name only. Meanwhile,

it seems everyone profits from the system savethose who generate the revenue.

"I'm just going down to the cornerstore to get a pack of gum."

"Don't be long."For half a century, the world has

applauded John Glenn as a heart-stirringAmerican hero. He lifted the nation'sspirits when, as one of the originalMercury 7 astronauts, he was blastedalone into orbit around the Earth; theenduring affection for him is so

powerful that even now people findthemselves misting up at the sight of hisface or the sound of his voice.

But for all these years, Glenn has hada hero of his own, someone who he hasseen display endless courage of adifferent kind:

Annie Glenn. They have been married for 68 years. He is 90; she turned 92 recently. There has been news coverage of the

50th anniversary of Glenn's flight intoorbit. We are being reminded that, half

a century down the line, he remainsAmerica's unforgettable hero.

He has never really bought that.Because the heroism he most cherishesis of a sort that is seldom cheered. Itbelongs to the person he has knownlonger than he has known anyone elsein the world.

John Glenn and Annie Castor firstknew each other when literally they shared a playpen.

In New Concord, Ohio, his parentsand hers were friends. When the familiesgot together, their children played.

John the future Marine fighterpilot, the future test-pilot ace, the futureastronaut was pure gold from the

start. He would end up having what ittook to rise to the absolute pinnacle ofAmerican regard during the space race;imagine what it meant to be the youngJohn Glenn in the small confines of

    New Concord.Three-sport varsity athlete, most

admired boy in town, Mr. Everything.Annie Castor was bright, was caring,

was talented, was generous ofspirit. But she could talk only with themost excruciating of difficulty. Ithaunted her.

Her stuttering was so severe that itwas categorized as an "85%" disability

85% of the time, she could notmanage to make words come out.

When she tried to recite a poem inelementary school, she was laughed at.She was not able to speak on thetelephone. She could not have a regularconversation with a friend.

    And John Glenn loved her.

Even as a boy he was wise enough tounderstand that people who could notsee past her stutter were missing out onknowing a rare and wonderful girl.

They married on April 6, 1943. As amilitary wife, she found that life as sheand John moved around the countrycould be quite hurtful. She has written:"I can remember some very painfulexperiences especially the ridicule."

In department stores, she would wanderunfamiliar aisles trying to find the rightsection, embarrassed to attempt to askthe salesclerks for help. In taxis, shewould have to write requests to thedriver, because she couldn't speak thedestination out loud. In restaurants, she

would point to the items on the menu.A fine musician, Annie, in every

community where she and John moved, would play the organ in church as a wayto make new friends. She and John hadtwo children; she has written: "Can youimagine living in the modern world and

being afraid to use the telephone?'Hello' used to be so hard for me to say.I worried that my children would beinjured and need a doctor. Could Isomehow find the words to get theinformation across on the phone?"

John, as a Marine aviator, flew 59combat missions in World War II and90 during the Korean War. Every timehe was deployed, he andAnnie said goodbye thesame way. His lastwords to her beforeleaving were:

"I'm just going downto the corner store to get

a pack of gum."And, with just the two

of them there, she wasable to always reply:

"Don't be long."On that February day

in 1962 when the worldheld its breath andthe Atlas rocket wasabout to propel himtoward space, thosewere their words, onceagain. And in 1998,when, at 77, he went

back to space aboard the shuttle Dis-covery, it was an understandably tensetime for them. What if something hap-

pened to end their life together? She knew what he would say to her

before boarding the shuttle. He did and this time he gave her a present tohold onto:

A pack of gum.She carried it in a pocket next to her

heart until he was safely home. Many times in her life she attempted

various treatments to cure her stutter.None worked.

But in 1973, she found a doctor inVirginia who ran an intensive programshe and John hoped would help her. Shetraveled there to enroll and to give it her

best effort. The miracle she and Johnhad always waited for at last, asmiracles will do, arrived. At age 53, she

was able to talk fluidly, and not in brief,anxiety-ridden, agonizing bursts.

John has said that on the first day heheard her speak to him with confidenceand clarity, he dropped to his knees tooffer a prayer of gratitude.

He has written: "I saw Annie'sperseverance and strength through theyears and it just made me admire herand love her even more." He has heardroaring ovations in countries around theglobe for his own valor, but his awe isreserved for Annie, and what sheaccomplished: "I don't know if I wouldhave had the courage."

Her voice is so clear and steady now

that she regularly gives public talks. Ifyou are lucky enough to know theGlenns, the sight and sound of them

bantering and joking with each otherand playfully finishing each others'sentences is something that warmsyou and makes you thankful just to bein the same room.

Monday will be the anniversary ofthe Mercury space shot, and once again

people will remember, and will speakof the heroism of Glenn the astronaut.

But if you ever find yourself at anevent where the Glenns are appearing, and you want to see someone so

brimming with pride and love that youmay feel your own tears start to well up,wait until the moment that Annie standsto say a few words to the audience.

And as she begins, take a look ather husband's eyes.

"Aromas of cassis and boysenberryare accented by soft black tea and

anise notes, while the palate isdefined by caramel, vanilla,

Baker's chocolate and intriguinglayers of toasted bread

and pie spices."That's an actual tasting

note on a Napa ValleyCabernet Sauvignon.

If such descriptionsmake your eyes roll,

you're not alone.Tasting notes can be quite bewil-

    dering andthe vocabularyof formal

    wine analysiscan makethe processintimidating.

After all, whatthe heck is a

    boysenberry?Fortunately, the

    science behindsuch narratives is

easy to understand. And by identifying the

aromas in your glass andthen describing them you'll

    increase your appreciationof wine.

Smelling begins when chemicalcompounds are released bywhatever it is we're smelling, stimulating nerve cells in the

nose, mouth, and throat. Those cells send messagesto the brain, where specific mells are r ecognized.

Grapes, like all fruits, produce aromaticcompounds. The process of fermentation causes allsorts of chemical reactions, and those create evenmore aromas. Very often, that fermented grape juicewill interact with grape stems, dead yeast, and oakduring the winemaking process, resulting in an evenmore complex bouquet. As wine ages, aromaticchanges continue to take place.

It's no wonder why some tasting notes read likegrocery lists!

Detecting a wine's many aromas is just part offormal tasting; the next step is describing it. Here, things get tricky because all of us have our ownolfactory memories. And we develop most of thosememories as children.

What smells to like blueberry pie to one taster

could easily smell like ripe blackberries to another. And neither person is wrong. We all have our own, unique stock of aromas in our memories.

Making matters even more confusing, people havevarying sensitivities to different aromas. A tasterthat's very sensitive to mercaptans a wine flawthat manifests itself with aromas of onions andcabbage may find some wines undrinkable thatothers find delicious.

Evaluating wines seriously complete with yournose in the glass and thoughtful tasting opens upthe entire world of wine appreciation. And it's notthat difficult.

Next time you enjoy wine at home, pay attentionto what you're smelling.

Wines from the New World countries like theUnited States, Australia, and Argentina tend tooffer riper fruit aromas thanks to warmer growingconditions. Old World wines, on the other hand, aregenerally more restrained.

    C a l i f o r n i aChardonnays, for ex-ample, are typicallymarked by notes of

pineapple and melon.Chardonnays fromFrance especiallythe region of Chablis

present aromas ofgreen apples, lemon, and lime.

Syrah offers a similar contrast. In Australia, thegrape is normally used to produce deliciouslyhedonistic fruit bombs emitting gobs of ripe

blackberries and licorice. French Syrah is typicallymarked by blueberries, meat, and black pepper.

Winemaking decisions also influence how a winesmells.

While fruit notes come from the grapes, a wine-

maker can impart "secondary" aromas like vanilla, chocolate, and coffee by using oak. That butter smellone so often encounters in California Chardonnay isthe result of "malolactic fermentation," a processthat's used to make wine softer and more accessible. This process is standard for most red wines.

Finally, a wine can offer "tertiary" aromas afterbottle aging. These notes are often savory thinkmushrooms and hazelnuts.

Understanding all the nuances of wine may seemdaunting, but all one needs is a sense of smelland taste, along with a strong streak of curiosity.Otherwise, wine appreciation just takes practice. So start drinking!

    Dear EarthTalk:Cuba just began

drilling for oil not far from U.S. shores and

hopes to become a major exporter. What ramificationsdoes this have for the environment?

    ~Betsy Shaw, Troy, NY

Cuba recently began drillingexploratory oil wells 30 miles off ofits northern coastand just 60 miles

south of the Florida Keys. Earlier this yearthe Scarabeo 9 oil rig finished up a longslow journey by sea from the shipyard that

birthed it in China to Cubas territorialwaters off the capital city of Havana (the50-year-old U.S. trade embargo on Cubaforbids such equipment going from orthrough the United States).

    Geologists estimate that the rock

formations off Cubas northern coast couldyield anywhere from five to 20 billion barrels of oil. American foreign policyexperts are concerned that Cubasinexperience with off-shore drilling couldlead to a spill in sensitive waters not unlikethe 2010 BP oil disaster. Theyre alsoworried that Cuba could yield more

political and economic power if it becomesa net exporter of oil.

Although Cuba is reportedly usingstate-of-the-art equipment and is working withexperienced international drilling contractors, someU.S. environmental groups are still troubled: A majoroil spill in Cuban waters could devastate both coastalCuba and the United States, reports the EnvironmentalDefense Fund (EDF). Floridas $60 billion tourismand fishing industriesas well as the Dry Tortugasmarine sanctuary and deepwater corals in the

Southeast Atlanticare at stake.Today Cuba imports half of the 200,000 barrels of

oil it consumes each day from its friendly neighbor tothe south, Venezuela. The other half of Cubas oilcomes from its own two existing on-shore oilfacilities. Finding significant off-shore reserves couldend its dependency on Venezuela and turn Cuba into

an oil exporter, possibly even thawing relationswith a still oil-hungry U.S. Indeed, if the find is

big enough, U.S.-based oil firms may want in, andwho knows how that will affect the U.S. embargoon trade with Cuba.

Given the environmental and political implicationsof Cubas foray into offshore drilling, EDF led adelegation to the island nation in September 2011.The goal of the delegation, which included co-chair

of the BP oil spill commission and former EPAAdministrator William Reilly, was to assess Cubas

plans and to share lessons learned about the risks ofoffshore drilling with officials there. The trip put thespotlight on the lack of dialogue between the UnitedStates and Cuba on how to prepare and respond to anoil spill in Cuban waters, says Lee Hunt of the

International Association of Drilling Contractors(IADC), one of the trips organizers. EDF,IADC and others would like to see the Obamaadministration initiate direct negotiations withCuba to ensure that sufficient environmental andsafety standards are in place.

Its a sensitive political issue because ifthere were a spill, U.S. technology might be

prevented from being quickly deployed due to thelong-running U.S. embargo of Cuba, reportsEDF. The United States has more than 5,000wells in its territorial waters in the Gulf. But noneare nearly as close to the Florida coast as the

proposed sites off Havana. But with the test drilling already underway,

Cuba isnt waiting around for U.S. input. Nodoubt, if the exploratory wells are a success,Cuban oil will become a huge political issue.

Melding design elements from different Chevymodels, the 789 shows the world that youreally can't have enough of a good thing.

Although the 789 looks instantly iconic,it is actually the best ofthree classics mountedatop a Le Mans-winningCorvette C6 chassis.Aptly named for thethree years represented inthe overall design, the789 has the "hoodedeyes"and chrome grilleof a '57, a mid-sectionthat's reminiscent of a'58 Impala and the "bird inflight" rear tailfins of a'59. These three Vehiclesare all instantly recognizableclassics celebrated by

    people around theworld.

Owning and operating a classic car often proves difficult. Rarity ofparts, expertise needed for installation, and potentially high upkeep orrestoration costs are some of the problems with which collectors mustdeal. All of the money in the world spent to modify or modernize avintage car will not change the reliability or performance problemsassociated with it. The 789 offers the best of both worlds: retro looks

and styling, and it will fire up every time you turn the key. The body isconstructed of lightweight composite panels. We have developed a

process of using 80% carbon composite with 20% fiberglass. Thisprocess gives us a light weight rigid part as if it was 100% carboncomposite with the minimal

properties of fiberglass that allows for show quality paint and finish. The customer can either provide us with a donor C5 series (1997 -

2004) or C6 series (2005-current) Corvette, which currently retails forapproximately $65,000 (though used models can be had for less), or wecan locate one for you. After stripping the 'Vette of its stock body, wehand-graft the retro body panels over the stock frame, suspension, and

massive 440-horsepower, 6.0-liter aluminum-block V8 engine. A fullrange of upgrades are available, including up to 800 hp powertrains, custom suspension, audio/video/navigation systems, interior

customization, and more. We will build each 789 to meet thecustomer's specifications. However, please note that no

previously built combination of paint scheme and interiortreatment will be duplicated.

For the fourth time in three years, the FHA israising the costs associated with obtaining afederally-backed loan. The American housingcrisis remains one of the top topics of current

political campaigns. And while the politiciansare quick to blame the banks as the source of thelending problems, many Americans are wakingup to the fact that banks makeloans according to the rulesset by the federally ownedagencies of Fannie Mae,Freddie Mac and the FHA.Theyre learning that in mostcases, these governmentagencies are the ones makingit tougher to get a loan.

Homeowners with a minimum20% equity typically try to

avoid FHA financing becauseof the added cost of mortgageinsurance that is required onmost FHA loans. However,

because the FHA requiresvery little equity it is a popular

program amongst homebuyerslooking to purchase a home with little moneydown as well as existing homeowners lookingto refinance into more favorable terms afterlosing much of the equity in their home.

Prior to 2009, the FHAs monthly mortgageinsurance was relatively affordable at 0.50% peryear. On a $250,000 loan fixed for 30 years, thiswould amount to $104.17 per month. In 2010,the FHA raised that monthly expense to 0.85,

bringing the monthly expense to $177.08. Not

stopping there, the FHA increased the mortgageinsurance premium again in 2011 to 1.10%,

brining the same calculation now to $229.17 permonth. This rate of mortgage insurance is nowmore than double what it was just three yearsago. But the FHA is now raising this cost again, this time to 1.20%. On our same $250,000 loan

amount, the additionalmonthly expense of obtain-ing an FHA backed loan willnow be $250.00 per month.

This increase applies to allFHA loan amounts of$625,500 or less. The FHAallows for loan amounts upto $729,750 in manycount ies, including LosAngeles and Orange

Counties. These larger loanamounts will now be subjectto a monthly mortgageinsurance rate of 1.45%. Theadditional 0.25% penalty isthe FHAs way of saying,we dont want the larger

loan amounts anymore.Mortgage insurance rates on FHA 15 year

loans are much less than their 30 year counter-parts, but are still experiencing the same 0.10%increase on smaller loans, and the same 0.35%increase for loan amounts over $625,500.

And if raising the monthly mortgageinsurance wasnt enough, the FHA is alsoraising the upfront funding fee associated withtheir loans from 1.0% to 1.75%. On our same

$250,000 loan, thisincreases the fundingfee from $2,500 to$4,375.

These changes willtake effect April 9th,2012 w i t h t heexcept i on of t he0.25% increase on loans over $625,500 whichwill be effective June 11, 2012. According to theFHA, these moves are necessary to offset thelosses theyve been taking on foreclosed loans. This seems to be a recurring theme inWashington: Let the next generation pay for themistakes of those who came before.

The only saving grace will come to asmall percentage of homeowners whosmortgages are currently with the FHA. More onthis in my next column.

*The MI factors in this article refer toFHA loans with a minimum 5% equity. FHAloans with less than 5% equity pay an additional0.05% monthly. FHA 15 year loans at78% LTV or less do not have any monthlymortgage insurance.
