Legacy Builders: Lieutenant Colonel (Ret) and Mrs. Burnis L. Hall
We’ve never been closer! Our students have set the ground-work to propel our University into the future. The Prairie View A&M Students, future Alumni, have accepted a fee increase to support the construction of ath-letic facilities on campus. By a 90% affirmative vote, our stu-dents agreed to a fee increase that could be as much as $180.00 per student per semester to support the construction of
Prairie View A&M University opened a window of opportunity for both LTC (Ret) Burnis Hall and his wife Lee Cradia Manning Hall and as alumni they could not be prouder.
Burnis and Lee are both from the small town of Navasota, Texas. It was during early high school (9th Grade) when Lee Cradia captured his heart. Not until the 11th Grade (1949) did Lee realize he had some poten-tial and courtship began. His wise choice was confirmed in their senior year of High School when Lee reined as “Miss Wildcat” the Campus Queen.
Both selected Prairie View as their College of choice. Burnis majored in History and worked in the Office of the late Dr George R. Woolfolk (Depart-ment Head), a greatly admired and respected mentor who became a lifelong friend. Lee received a Bachelor of Science Degree in May 1954. Burnis and Lee survived four years of court-ship at Prairie View and were married in Columbus, Georgia
sports facilities on our campus. The first facility in line for sup-port by the fee is our Football Stadium and Fieldhouse. Even with this superlative action by our students, we need an addi-tional $10 Million to start con-struction, past efforts have generated a little over $1 Million in cash and pledges.
Now more than ever, each of us, Alumni or Friend need to give and we need to complete our
on November 26, 1954 following his graduation in May 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army.
The Military provided for them 26 years of surprises (4 kids), world travel, excitement, two combat Tours in Vietnam, educational experiences as Pro-fessor of Military Science at South Carolina State College and Author Instructor at the Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, and Professional Development including a Master of Arts Degree in History from the Uni-versity of Missouri, Kansas City.
Active Military Life was con-cluded with his retirement at Ft. Hood, Texas, January 1, 1980 after serving as Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff 13th Corps Support Command.
After rejoining Lee and the family in Austin, Texas their selected retirement home site, Burnis earned an Associate Degree in Real Estate from Aus-
tin Community College and a Masters Degree in Government from the University of Texas at Austin. He then embarked on a new career. His license in Real
committed pledges. The students have extended a challenge that you will read more about on Page 2. Can our current and future generations of students count on our support? Please go to www.helppvbuild.org and join the effort. Our support is needed. Together we will make this hap-pen! Thank you!... In gratitude and service,
Roy G. Perry, Chairman and President
Estate proved useful in the acqui-sition of a number of properties in Austin and other areas which he and Lee currently manage.

Legacy Builders: Burnis and Lee Hall continued from page 1
As an Adjunct Professor, Burnis taught History and Government at Austin Community College for more than 21 years, mainly due to love for Students and Subject Mat-ters. In addition to Community involvement through civic, social and political groups, he is a member of the Gideons, an organization of Christian Professionals who distrib-ute Bibles worldwide. Burnis has been most active at Olivet Baptist Church in Austin where he serves as a Deacon and Manager of Church Rental Properties and Financial Reserves. He also serves as a Board Member and great supporter of the Navasota GW Carver Alumni Asso-ciation which has provided more than $200,000 in Scholarships and aid to Navasota High School gradu-ates over the last 17 years.
Lee has been most active over the 64 years of togetherness they have shared. Some of her various job descriptions are: Officer’s Wife, Girl Scout Leader, Bridge Partner, Secretary and Typist, Head Chef, Reception Coordinator, Chauffeur, Map Reader, Seamstress and Inte-
rior Decorator during thirteen mili-tary reassignments. Her only paid position was five years as Activity Director with Lutheran Social Ser-vices in Austin, after which she decided to retire. She is currently a member of The Top Ladies of Dis-tinction (Capital City Chapter), which provides scholarships to local Top Teen High School Graduates.
The Halls have four children Bur-nis Anton, who holds a B.S. from South Carolina State University, spent 10 years in the Army and later retired from the Postal Service. Anton has two children: Courtney, who holds a B.S in Engineering from Texas A&M and a MBA from the University of Texas, and Ashleigh who holds a B.A from North Texas State University, where she attended on a varsity basketball scholarship, a daughter Pamela works as a soft-ware technician with IBM and holds a B.A. from South Carolina State University, a son Byron who attended Texas State University and now owns a Floor Cleaning Busi-ness and manages real estate, and a daughter, Sharon who is a Commu-
nity Activist and founder of “Kids in D Hood” a support organization for disadvantaged children.
The Halls both have life time memberships in the Prairie View National Alumni Association and are active in both the Austin and Class of 1954 Chapter. Their main recreational hobby is playing Duplicate Bridge involving both local and national play.
In all of their 64 years of togetherness, the Halls say one of the easiest decisions they made and one on which there was an instant agreement was to provide a major contribution to support the construction of the PVAMU Sports Complex. They encourage all Alumni to help say goodbye to the small totally inadequate Panther Stadium in which they cheered winning Panther Teams from 1950-1954. Our young athletes, the sports department and visitors deserve a better environment. A Team effort by Alumni and Sup-porters will accomplish this, so “lets’ get it done”.

Hailing from a city of firsts, this chapter is no stranger to being among the “first.” Some of the most nota-ble are: first graduate to become the University President, Lieutenant General (Ret) Julius Becton; first chapter to have four of its members rise to the office of PVAMU-NAA President, Dr. Douthard Butler, Dr. Calvin Rolark, Dr. Samuel Metters and Mrs. Winnie Stokes Wooley, who was also one of the first four female Presidents. The DC Chapter that has a history of firsts but will not rest on it’s laurel, and has accepted another challenge.
Now, the Chapter, being led by
President Kenneth Hinson, Secre-tary George Gibson and Member Dr. Samuel Metters, has taken on the task of getting 100% of it’s member-ship on the rolls as DONORS to our Stadium. Chairman Roy Perry stated: “After visiting the Washing-ton DC Chapter in July of this year, I felt re-energized. The in-depth ques-tions from the members were far-sighted. They were not asking “if”, but “how” and “why not sooner”?” Of the pledges received from the DC members during this July meet-ing, 44% have been executed, pay-ments received or payment plans are underway. Will DC set another FIRST?

Class of 1953 Challenge update
In our last newsletter we told you about the Class of 1953 and their commitment to Help PV Build by pur-chasing 101 Bricks and a Seat Naming within the new Stadium. Here’s an
update on their status – 41 Bricks – 5 Seats – and some generous individual contributions for the Sports Complex. Thank you Class of 1953!!
The Class of 53 is anticipating a record number of members at Home-coming this year where they will be celebrating their 60th anniversary. One discussion item will be the com-
pletion of their brick purchases “I assure you that we will honor our commitment. Not only for brick pur-chases, but for individual contributions as well” stated their class President, Robert L. Stinnett, Ph.D. The Founda-tion knows they will, which class or chapter will be the next to tackle the “Class of 1953 Challenge”?

“Good planning, good design, and good construction are the three essentials necessary to fight obsoles-cence, and it is the quality of our designing today that will stamp these times as being one of good taste.” Terry D. Smith, AIA
Q: What steps did you take to become a supplier / vendor to Pvamu?
a: Our relationship at Prairie View A&M University began with our work on the 15 year Sports Complex Mas-ter plan. This work, done in a joint ven-ture with national design firm Leo Daley, included the reorganization and planning for all of the athletic fields and the conceptual design of the new football stadium. We were recently selected, in a partnership with another architectural firm, to serve as the architect for the actual new 15,000 seat football stadium. We are also
Associate Architect on the new Stu-dent Recreation Center which is beginning construction right now.
Q: What has the experience been like?
a: Working on a campus that I hold so many memories of is one of the most unique opportunities that I’ve had since starting the firm. Knowing that I am assisting the administration in the pursuit of their vision is satisfy-ing beyond words.
Q: Can you share what jobs you’ve earned and are working on now for the u n i v e r s i t y and the texas a&m univer-sity System?
a: In addition to the work men-tioned above on the Prairie View A&M campus, we
are very proud to be the architect for the renovations to the historic dormi-tories for the Corps of Cadets on the Texas A&M College Station campus. The Corps Dorms are part of the original College Station campus. We have renovated Harrell Hall, Lacy Hall, and Leonard Hall and have designed two brand new Leadership Learning Centers which are attached to these dormitories and will provide the cadets with a whole new student life experience.

Coach John Cochran
Coach John Cochran – Hard Work Will Always Show Up
Train, Prepare, Win reads the mantra on the shirts of the Prairie View A&M University’s Men’s Tennis Team. When asked what inspired the mantra, Coach John Cochran says he tells the team, “work hard and the work always shows up”. As testimony to the mantra, on April 20th the men’s tennis team capped off its dominating 2013 season against Southwestern Athletic Con-ference opponents with a 4-0 win over Alcorn State in the SWAC Tournament Championship match, while maintaining a team average 3.2 GPA! With their 2013 SWAC Tour-nament Championship win, the Pan-thers secured two titles in four years under Cochran, proving to be one of the elite programs in the SWAC. Prior to the 2013 SWAC Champion-ships, Cochran coached the Pan-thers to their first SWAC Championship in 35 years and their second title in four years after win-ning the 2010 tournament. This feat,
combined with an undefeated SWAC season places Cochran as one of the greats in program history.
A native of Chicago, Coach Cochran played tennis for Texas Southern University from 1982-86 and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in philoso-phy. After graduation, Cochran moved to North Hollywood, Cali-fornia and served as a residential counselor for at-risk youth at the Ettie Lee Homes for Youth. In 1998, Cochran returned to Houston and worked for various local agencies before accepting a position at Prairie View A&M Univer-sity in 2000 as an academic advisor responsible for
providing incoming freshman aca-demic support. While serving as the Academic Enhancement Coordina-tor for athletics, Cochran is in his 12th year as PV’s head men’s and women’s tennis coach.
A motivational speaker and mem-ber of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Cochran is married to the former Adrienne Burley of Houston. They have three children, Joshua (19), John (17) and Gabrielle (13).
