• The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine black students in the Little rock area that wanted to go to school. The local high school wouldn’t segregate.

Little Rock Nine• The little rock nine consisted of; Ernest Green, Elizabeth

Eckford, Carlotta Walls Lanier, Jefferson Thomas , Dr. Terrence Roberts , Minnijean Brown Trickey, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed-Wair, an Melba Pattillo Beals. These students were kept out of the high school.

Segregation types

• The little rock nine were kept out of the school by many people on of them being the governor Orval Fabbus. He ordered that the students be kept out of the high school an that segregation will not be allowed.

• People did things to the students such as; scaring them by saying the KKK was coming for them an that they were going to hang them, like they should be.

• Once the students where in school people tormented them. Some of the things people did once the students got in school were worst. One day when a young black girl went to the restroom 5 white men went into the bathroom an held the stall door shut, lit paper balls on fire an threw them at her while she was trapped an could not get away.

• Some of the things students went through were with mob like mentality with the whit men. Below is a picture of one black girl surrounded by at least a hundred white people on her walk to school. This was an everyday appearance for at least a month while the students were going to school.

The Outcome • On September 25th

Congressman Brooks Hays and Mayor Woodrow Mann sent a letter to the President to ask for help. The very next day the troops were sent down to Arkansas an President Eisenhower also took control from Orval Fabbus an ordered the Arkansas National Guard to escort the students into school.

Where are they Now…• The little rock 9 has gone through a very hard

time when they were children going through school but now it has paid off.

• Ernest Green- He was Assistant Secretary of Housing an urban affairs under President Carter.

• Elizabeth Eckford- She went on to be a journalist in the U.S. Army

Where are they now…• Carlotta Walls Lanier- She went on to college

at Michigan State University and graduated to be a real estate agent.

• Jefferson Thomas- He is now an accountant for the U.S. Secretary of Defense.

• Dr. Terrence Roberts- He earned his doctorate degree at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Where are they Now…• Minnijean Brown Trickey- She is currently a

writer and a social worker in Canada. Where they will make a documentary on her life story.

• Gloria Ray Karlmark- She successfully published magazines in 39 countries.

• Thelma Mothershed-Wair- She is a volunteer at an abused women shelter.

Where are They Now…• Melba Pattillo Beals- She went on to be a journalist

for People Magazine and NBC.

• Although these people have gone through some very difficult times in their lives you can see that they have made the very bet of it an have all become successful, one even with his doctorate. These people from not giving up have made an ever lasting impression and are now considered true heros.
