07 THE BLACK SwANby nassim nicholas taleb
What have the invention of the wheel,Pompeii, the Wall Street Crash, Harry Potterand the internet got in common? Why should u never run for a train or read anewspaper? What can Catherine the Great’s lovers tell usabout probability? Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s new book is all aboutBlack Swans: the random events that underlieour lives, from bestsellers to world disasters.Their impact is huge; they’re nearly impossibleto predict; yet after they happen we always tryto rationalize them. A rallying cry to ignore the‘expert’s, The Black Swan shows us how tostop trying to predict everything and takeadvantage of uncertainty.
BOOK
The List02_The list 02 22/11/09 15:30 Pagina 27
Before the discovery of Australia, people in the old world were convincedthat all swans were white, an unassailable belief as it seemed completelyconfirmed by empirical evidence. The sighting of the first black swan mighthave been an interesting surprise for a few ornithologists (and othersextremely concerned with the coloring of birds), but that is not where thesignificance of the story lies. It illustrates a severe limitaton to our learningfrom observations or experience and the fragility of our knowledge. Onesingle observation can invalidate a general statement derived frommillennia of confirmatory sightings of millions of white swans. All you needis one single (and I’m told, quite ugly) black bird.I push one step beyond this philosophical-logical question into an empiricalreality, and one that has obsessed me since childhood. what we call herea Black Swan (and capitalize it) is an event with the following threeattributes.First, it is an outlier, as it lies outside the realm of regular expectations, because nothing in the past can convincingly point to it’s possibility.Second,it carries an extreme impact. Third, in spite of its outlier status, human nature makes us concoct explanations for its occurence after thefact, making it explainable and predictable.I stop and summize the triplet: rarity, extreme impact, and retrospective(thought not prospective) predictability. A small number of Black Swansexplain almost everything in our world, from the succes of ideas andreligions, to the dynamics of historical events, to elements of our ownpersonal lives. Ever since we left the Pleistocene, some ten millennia ago,the effect of these Black Swans has been increasing. It started acceleratingduring the industrial revolution, as the world started getting morecomplicated, while ordinary events, the ones we study and discuss andtry to predict from reading the newspapers, have become increasinglyinconsequential.Just imagine how little your understanding of the world on the eve of theevents of 1914 would have helped you guess what was to happen next.(Don’t cheat by using the explanations drilled into your cranium by yourdull high school teacher). How about the rise of Hitler and the subsequentwar? How about the precipitous demise of the Soviet bloc? How about therise of the Islamic fundamentalism? How about the spread of the Internet? How about the market crash of 1987 (and the more unexpected recovery)?Fads, epidemics, fashion, ideas, the emergence of art genres and schools. All follow these Black Swan dynamics. Literally, just about everything ofsignificance around you might qualify.

The List02_The list 02 22/11/09 15:30 Pagina 29
This combination of low predictability and large impactmakes the Black Swan a great puzzle; but that is not yetthe core concern of this book. Add to this phenomenonthe fact that we tend to act as if it does not exist! I don’tmean just you, your cousin Joey, and me, but almost all‘social scientists’ who, for over a century, have operatedunder the false belief that their tools could measureuncertainty. For the applications of the sciences ofuncertainty to real-world problems has had ridiculouseffects; I have been privileged to see it in finance andeconomics. Go ask your portfolio manager for hisdefinition of ‘risk’, and odds are that he will supply youwith a measure that excludes the possibility of the BlacSwan- hence one that has no better predictive value forassessing the total risks than astrology (we will see howthey dress up the intellectual fraud with mathematics). This problem is endemic in social matters. The central idea of this book concerns our blindness withrespect to randomness, particularly the large deviations:why do we, scientists or nonscientists, hotshots orregular Joes, tend to see the pennies instead of thedollars? why do we keep focusing on the minutiae, notthe possible significant large events, in spite of theobvious evidence of their huge influence? And, if youfollow my argument, why does reading the newspaperactually decrease your knowledge of the world? It is easy to see that life is the cumulative effect of ahandful of significant shocks. It is not so hard to identifythe role of Black Swans, from your armchair (or bar stool). Go through the following exercise. Look into your ownexistence. Count the significant events, the technologicalchanges, and the inventions that have taken place inyour environment since you were born and comparethem to what was expected before their advent. Howmany came on a schedule? Look into your own personallife, to your choice of profession, say, or meeting yourmate, your exile from your country of origin, the betrayalsyou faced, your sudden enrichment or impoverishment. How often did these things ocuur according to plan?

Kris Kuksi’s art treats morbiditywith a sympathetic touch andsymbolizes the paradox of thedeath of the individual byobjective personification of death. There is a fear of thisconsciousness because it dropsin upon us without mercy, and yetthere is a need to appeal to it inorder to provide a sense ofsecurity, however deluded thatsense may be. The amazingdetail, humour and neo futuristicreferences in his work provide forhours of viewing pleasure andmarvel.

As the late twentieth-century fascination withrounded shapes, organic influences, andplastics fades, interior designers areincreasingly drawn to deep colours, polishedwoods, velvets, furs, leather, dark metals, and brick – materials used liberally in thepast – that have a nostalgic quality. Efforts to shape a less austere present bycreating an idealized version of the pasthave begun to appear in commercial andresidential design throughout the countryand abroad.Dark Nostalgia presents over twenty-fiveprojects that exemplify the smoothincorporation of evocative historic detail intocurrent interiors.
