Abstract: The collection consists of materials and records related to Liouba Halsman

Golschmann’s efforts to secure the release of her brother, Philippe Halsman from his

prison sentence for the murder of his father, Max Halsman, letters written by Philippe

Halsman during his imprisonment, and documents regarding his emigration efforts to

America. Collection materials include correspondence, newspaper clippings, legal

publications, and photography equipment.

Historical and Biographical Information

Philippe Halsman (1906-1979), was born in Riga, Latvia. He was

renowned for his portrait photographs of such notables as Albert

Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Audrey Hepburn, Groucho Marx,

Bob Hope, Milton Berle, John F. Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Alfred

Hitchcock, and for his collaborations with Salvador Dali. He was

inspired while photographing comedians jumping in mid-air to

photograph other subjects in this manner, including the Duke and

Duchess of Windsor, Marilyn Monroe, and Richard Nixon.

In September 1928, Halsman was falsely accused of his father’s

murder while they were on a hiking trip in the Austrian Tyrol, an

area known for its anti-Semitism. He was sentenced to ten years

hard labor/solitary confinement in Innsbruck, Austria. His sister,

Liouba Halsman Golschmann, campaigned for his release by

garnering support from important European intellectuals,

including Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Henri Hertz, and Paul Painlevé, who

all endorsed his innocence. After two trials, each resulting in guilty verdicts, he was pardoned

and released in 1930 (Wikipedia. 2014).

Liouba Halsman Golschmann (1909-1979), was also born in Riga, Latvia. She was instrumental

in securing her brother’s release from prison. She traveled throughout Europe to meet with

leaders such as: Ernest Bovet, Secretary General of the League for Human Rights; Wilhelm

Miklas, President of Austria; and Paul Painlevé, President of France. After his release from

prison, she sought the help of Albert Einstein and Eleanor Roosevelt’s Emergency Rescue

Committee for his emigration to America (Emanuel, 2008).

Scope and Contents

The collection is held by the Philippe Halsman Archive. It consists of materials collected and

created by Liouba Halsman Golschmann and others that relate to his murder trial. It includes

correspondence, photographs, legal documents and briefs, personal items that belonged to

Philippe Halsman such as photography equipment, newspaper clippings, books and other

ephemera. This collection has been loaned to Nicole Emanuel, in Leawood, Kansas (Appendix

A), while she conducts research for a biography she is writing of Liouba Halsman Golschmann.

Related materials included are copies of materials obtained from the Albert Einsten Archives by

Nicole Emanuel that pertain to the Einstein’s relationship with Halsman, and a recorded

interview with Liouba Halsman Golschmann.

It is three linear feet, housed in three boxes. Documents are foldered within the boxes.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged by four series: Correspondence,

Newspaper Articles, Case Study Publications and

Photography Equipment and Audio. Correspondence is

arranged by four sub-series, and chronological within those

series. Chronological order is used within all other series

types, with the exception of Photography Equipment and

Audio. Because much of the collection is in languages

other than English, translations are provided with original

when available.
