A Message from the Chairman of the Board The successful completion of the school year always provides an opportunity to both look back on our recent accomplishments, as well as look forward to new programs and initiatives planned for the coming school year. Despite the challenges presented by our economy, the school continued to push forward with many initiatives to enhance the quality of education at St. Marks. This past year, the administration and faculty introduced a new reading curriculum; implemented significant improvements to our technology hardware and software resources; continued to focus on faculty education; and implemented a new faculty review and assessment protocol. At the Board level, the Trustees completed a comprehensive set of revisions to the school’s By-laws; developed a detailed long-range facilities

management plan; implemented a major rebalancing of the school’s endowment; and most importantly, met our revised fund raising goals for the year, despite the economy. This year, the dollars raised through our fundraising events contributed over $300,000 to our operating budget, or approximately $800 per student. In this difficult environment, we are grateful for the support we receive from parents, grandparents, friends, alumni, and corporate sponsors.

A principal responsibility of the Board is to assure the financial health and long term strength of the school. On this level, I believe the school is in excellent condition. Our financial stability reflects the astute financial management of the school’s administration. St. Mark’s has no debt and sufficient financial resources to allow our school to continue to press forward with new initiatives and longer term investments. This coming year, the Board will undertake a comprehensive strategic planning process which will help set the

direction for the school for the next five years and beyond. Finally, Missy Ketchum will become the new School Board Chair. Missy has been a Trustee of the school for 6 years and most recently has served as the Vice Chair of the Board and Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. She possesses a deep knowledge of elementary education issues, and we are grateful for her commitment and dedication to the school. Have a great summer, and we are looking forward to seeing you in August for the beginning of another great school year. On behalf of the Board, George M. Egan, Chairman

Dear St. Mark’s Families and Friends, Greetings and best wishes to all of you! During the summer months, it is very quiet on our campus. We have a summer camp for our youngest children and two weeks of enrichment camps for our older students; however, it is still much quieter than when school is in session. Every afternoon I find myself heading over to see our younger children at camp, just to visit and see those beautiful smiles. As I write this letter, it is the eve of Independence Day and certainly a time to reflect on the freedom we have, as citizens of the United States, and the sacrifices that have been made for our freedom. St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School has a number of active and retired military personnel among our families. We are proud to count them as members of our community! One of our active military dads is Dr. William Cramer, a commander in the United States Navy Medical Corps. He is currently stationed in Afghanistan and is the father of students, Hunt and Toby. Before he left this past spring, the fifth grade class made him an exquisite card and presented it to him at a Chapel in March. Shortly after his departure, the third graders created and sent him a joyous patriotic poster. I would like to quote a section of Dr. Cramer’s e-mail to Mrs. Beville Anderson, in thanks for these items. It

Messages from the Head of School & Rector

certainly touched my heart and seemed so timely on Independence Day. Dr. Cramer has graciously allowed me to share his sentiments with you: “The strong fabric of Christian decency is woven in and around each child's name in these wonderfully unexpected keepsakes. Of course, I appreciate the expressed sentiment that the sacrifice and danger surrounding military deployment to war is recognized and honored by the school and especially the children. But the most powerful and most supportive message for me is the implied support that the community of St Mark's and of Ortega has offered to Toby, Hunt, and Julia while I am away. Concerns for personal sacrifice and safety are insignificant when compared to the angst that I feel by being so far from my family. Modern communication makes the distance seem less at times, but the power of a nurturing and caring community is far more important. Many thanks to you and to Drew Haramis and Steve Williams for your parts in quietly nurturing this bedrock of decency within our school and our community. My family and I are truly blessed to live within such a wonderful, caring community

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

Education is a process of wonder, exploration, disciplined attention to information, conceptual formation of a view of the world, and ultimately, a development of character in persons who are “educated,” such that they are able to meet and to work well with the challenges, as well as the opportunities life brings. When any aspect of the educational process is missing, such as wonder or conceptual formation, all the other aspects are diminished as is the person who is being educated. I am going to hazard a guess that the aspect of rigorous attention to information may not be uppermost in your rear view mirror during July, as it might be in, say, January. But wonder and exploration are very much in our sight at this time of year, and they bring vitality and passion to the education that is our life-long pursuit. As we experience leisure, travel, and play, our capacities for wonder and exploration come to the forefront. Wonder is the capacity to appreciate the astonishing gift of life. Wonder animates all the other aspects of education, marking them with feeling and

fervor. Take away wonder and what we have is drudgery. Exploration is wonder suspended over and through time. We explore other times in history, other cultures, new horizons, and new languages that stretch both our brains and our hearts. Traveling through life as an adventure makes people rich in hope and desire. As a priest committed to the prospect of a lifetime of education, I invite you to carefully cultivate the twin aspects of wonder and exploration this summer season. You will bring more passion and energy to everything you do! Jonathan B. Coffey, Rector

and it is my great honor to serve in support of the men and women who are fighting daily to maintain this privilege and so that others may one day enjoy similar peace in troubled areas abroad. Happy Independence Day!” I wish all of our St. Mark’s families and friends a relaxed, restful, and safe summer! In Christ’s love, Cathy Hardage, Head of School

Dear Lord, Creator of life and Sustainer of seed and soil, of tree and flower, you have created this world and all that lives in it.

It is to You that we come in this prayer of dedication and blessing, for you are the giver of life and the sustainer of all that lives. We come to you to dedicate this Oak tree in memory of Allison Brundick Haramis who you continue to hold in your generous grace. We give you thanks for her life and come to you in our tears and sorrow.

May this tree remind us of this one whom we love and who is held forever in your never ending love. May this tree dig deep roots just as Allison had with her friends, community and family. May this tree grow wide branches to bear witness to your abundant love and grace made known in Allison. And, may this tree find children and friends laughing, sitting, and maybe even dancing beneath it.

We will remember and honor Allison with this living monument and we will ask you, Lord, for your blessing upon this tree, upon the Haramis family and upon all us who mourn, through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

A Blessing for Allison’s Tree This blessing was read by Becky Hudmon, a mother of two 08-09 third grade students, at Allison’s Tree Blessing Ceremony on May 21, 2009. The parents and students of the 08-09 third grade class donated and dedicated this special area as a place for everyone to enjoy in remembrance of Allison's joyful spirit.

In Loving Memory of the Joyful Spirit of

Allison Brundick Haramis

T he St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School community was deeply saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of one of its own this past April as a result of a car accident. Fifteen-year-old, Allison Brundick Haramis,

was our daughter, sister, friend, student, alumni, classmate, dancer, actress, and shining star. Her glowing smile and sparkling personality will be forever remembered by everyone she knew. Over the past few months, many have come together to remember and honor Allison. Parents and students of the 08-09 third grade class of St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School have dedicated a living monument, an oak tree, in her honor. Allison’s Tree, as it is known, is located in a sunny spot behind West Hall (the main office). Her tree was planted with love during a ceremony on May 21, 2009, given by the parents and students of the 08-09 third grade class. The third graders led friends and family in attendance in singing of patriotic songs, My Country ‘tis of Thee and America the Beautiful, in celebration of Allison’s July 4 birthday. Also given by this group, is a statue of a young ballerina (pictured to the left) now located by the tree along with four benches and a plaque which reads, “In Loving Memory of the Joyful Spirit of Allison Brundick Haramis.” As another tribute to Allison, the school’s Drama Club has begun the “Allison’s Dream Award” to be given each year to a drama student. The award, marked by the presentation of a cup, will be given to a student who brightens a room, has a big personality, and is willing to take positive risks to reach their goal of being heard and making a difference. The recipient will be one who is willing to share their love of live theatre and drama with others, and encourage and help their peers to reach for the same dream. Also, white irises, donated by the Wolfersberger family, have been planted along the back fence of the Berg Family Play Field in memory of Allison.

A Digital Learning Experience Hosted at St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School St. Mark's Episcopal Day School hosted a hands-on digital learning experience presented by Apple Computers on Thursday, May 7. Florida Council of Independent Scools (FCIS) administrators, teachers, and technology directors from all over the state of Florida came to our campus to see the school, and to learn how we are using technology to enhance learning. Nancy Bennett, Technology Director, and Anne Gorman, Computer Teacher, presented to the group about St. Mark's integration of technology into the classrooms and curriculum by showing examples of student projects, podcasts, videos, and the 5th grade Washington D.C. website. Visitors were also given a tour of our campus and stopped by classrooms to observe our teachers using technology. The day ended with all the guests in our computer lab creating their own podcasts using Apple programs.

Dear Parents, Teachers, and Friends, Thank you, thank you, thank you! As many of you may remember, in late April, we held a Parents’ Association BBQ to kick off our volunteer efforts for the 2009-2010 school year. The food was delicious, and the fellowship was fantastic! However, more than anything, the volunteer response since then has been nothing short of phenomenal. So many of you have signed up to help with not only one event, but with two or three. Gina Donahoo, the 09-10 Vice President, and I are so excited, and we are busy finalizing our plans for what we hope will be an incredible school year for the Parents’ Association. If you have not volunteered yet, it’s not too late. We still have a variety of positions open and are more than happy to help you find just the right spot for your individual gifts and talents. We hope this letter finds you relaxing on the beach or in the mountains with your precious families. I always treasure this time of the year when life slows down enough for a lingering cup of coffee in the morning or dinnertime that isn’t rushed because of looming homework or sports practice. Gina and I look forward to working with you all in what promises to be an exciting year for the Parents’ Association. Please mark your calendars now for Meet Your Teacher morning on Tuesday, August 18. It is going to be a great day to celebrate the beginning of the new school year and you won’t want miss the fun! Most sincerely yours, Amy Morales, Parents’ Association President

Has Earned NAEYC Re-Accreditaton! St. Mark's Episcopal Day School has earned re-accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) – the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. “We are proud to have once again earned the mark of quality from NAEYC and to be recognized for our continued commitment to reaching the highest professional standards,” said Cathy Hardage, Head of School. “NAEYC re-accreditation lets families in our community know children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences possible.” St. Mark’s Early Learning, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten programs are covered under this re-accreditation. To earn it, St. Mark’s went through an extensive self-study process this past spring, measuring the programs against the 10 NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related Accreditation Criteria. Re-accreditation also required a site visit by NAEYC Assessors to ensure the program meets each of the standards. Congratulations to Stephanie Kowald, Director of the Early Learning Program, and all the faculty and staff who make these programs excel.

Special “For-A-Day’s” What would you do if you got to run the school for a day? What books would you read if you were the librarian for a day? Or, what if you could spend the day with Mr. Marty? Several of our students experienced those days again this year, thanks to their parents bidding on the chance at the Amore II Dinner and Auction event in February. As Head of School for the day, sixth grader, Riley T., declared no homework and no uniforms. Pre-Kindergartener, Trip G., handled the walkie-talkie and learned the ins-and-outs of the school during his day with Mr. Marty. Librarians, Bond M., Ben M., Kate F., and Cameron Perry W., each had a day to readbooks to their peers.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated in the

08-09 Annual Fund.

Five classrooms reached 100% parent participation, and overall,$187,494 was

raised, including a generous anonymous

match of $15,000.

After chairing this year's Annual Fund, we would like to thank the entire St. Mark's family. Who would have ever known what to expect this year? But, as a loving, supportive community, we all pulled together and met our goal for the year. We'd like to thank our co-chairs Holly and Michael Upchurch and all of our class representatives. We will always hold St. Mark's dear to our hearts.

Thanks to all again, Ann and Chip Dempsey, 08-09 Annual Fund Chairs

T he Fruits of the Spirit Character Education Program

was authored and developed by our Head of School, Cathy Hardage. It is now being used in a number of schools in Florida and Texas. This program is ideally suited for an Episcopal school. Each of the nine fruits is assigned to a month of the school year. During Wednesday chapels, homilies about the fruits are presented to the students to complement the instruction in Christian education classes, and students receive awards. Some awards are voted on by the students, and some are chosen by the faculty. By the end of the school year, every student will receive an award.

Congratulations to Our 2008-09 Recipient of the Nancy N. Wood Excellence in Education Award

M rs. Drew Brundick Haramis, third grade teacher, is the 08-09 school year recipient of the Nancy N. Wood Excellence in Education Award.

In 2001, the Board established this award to recognize and reward teachers or staff members who consistently and unselfishly go above and beyond normal expectations of time, energy, and devotion in working with students. Named in honor of the retirement of past Headmistress, Nancy N. Wood, the award is presented annually to a faculty or staff member who personifies quality in their teaching and in their influence on student learning. Past recipients include: Steve Williams, Liz Robinson, Mary Kathryn Smith, Cathy Braude, Kathy Betancourt, Traci Black, and Lauren Mahoney.

Faculty and staff nominate peers for the award, which is then reviewed by an award selection committee consisting of Board members. Nominations included statements of her motivation for children to learn, her love for children and respect of them as persons, her dedication to her career, and her loyalty to the school.

Mrs. Haramis graduated with a B.S. in child development and family relations and a minor in elementary education from Florida State University. She earned a Masters Degree at Jacksonville University, while becoming certified in elementary and early childhood education. As a faculty member of St. Mark's since 1984, she has taught first, second, and third grades, as well as spending seven years as the Director of the Early Learning Program. Her passion is Jacksonville history, and she periodically leads tours for local third grade classes. She is also a member of the Board of Regents Parish and Diocesan Schools, Diocese of Florida, and is an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
