Happy Harvest!
Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences
November is a time to celebrate student accomplishments made throughout 1st
quarter while also noting areas students may need to ‘pick up the pace’ in order to
improve results for 2nd quarter. We look forward to meeting with all of our families
to share how each student is progressing. Throughout the month of November
parent-student-teacher conferences will be held. Dates/times depend upon a
student’s grade-level, the mode of the conference (traditional or student-led), and
parental availability. Although our school calendar includes a full week of
minimum days (November 17-21) for this purpose, our goal to schedule times that
will allow full participation of all of our families which may include a time outside
of November 17-21. Lastly, please look for the 1st Quarter Report Cards to come
home in the mail during the week of November 3.
Academic Help Center – NEW OPPORTUNITY!
As a school that strives to enhance a COLLEGE-GOING CULTURE, we are
pleased to offer an Academic Help Center for our students. It will be open on
selected Saturdays throughout the 2014-2015 school year and is available to all
Parsons students who desire additional support in achieving academic success.
Tutoring is available on core curricular topics. Students may also receive support
in other areas of academic achievement as well. This may include helping students
learn effective organizational skills or test prep techniques. Students are invited to
attend on a drop-in basis between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The Help
Center is located in the library. In order to ensure student safety, parents/guardians
need to sign their students in and out of the program. The Academic Help Center
will be open on the following Saturdays during the 2014-2015 school year:
November 15, December 6 and 13, January 17 and 31, February 7 and 28,
March 14 and 28, April 18 and 25, and May 2. Mark you calendars!
After-school Intervention
Students observed to be performing below grade level in the areas of math and/or
language arts (reading) may be eligible to receive intervention support. These extra
services are specifically targeted to the needs of the individual students. If a
student is eligible, the parent will be notified of such services and informed as to
the type and length of support offered. Services will include direct teacher support
as well as our adopted intervention program, i-Ready. i-Ready is an interactive,
adaptive and computer-based tool used to identify student needs in math and
reading. Ongoing progress monitoring allows the teacher to determine student
progress towards identified targets. This data will be used to make decisions about
their needs, and whether to continue or discontinue with these services.

Guiding Social Media Use
Although there are many ways to approach guiding adolescents in technology use, staying
involved as parents is the best way to help them navigate this important part of their life. Social
media fulfills an important adolescent need to stay connected with friends as they move down
the path toward independence and adulthood. However, teens can be especially sensitive to,
and stressed by, the seemingly unending social world online. What can you do to help as parents?
1.) Establish an agreement with your child about expectations and responsibilities, including how
much use is acceptable in a day. Some parents have teens turn in their phones for the night or
leave them to charge in the kitchen. It is important to “unplug” and take a break from
technology. Set a good example by putting your own devices away, too.
2.)Avoid placing computers in a bedroom so they don’t interfere with sleep or make it more
challenging to monitor usage.
3.)Talk about the risks of posting personal information and pictures.
4.) Use content filtering on your home computer (ex., CyberPatrol), and/or learn how to use
parental controls on devices.
5.)Stay up to date. Talk to your student and find out about what social media accounts they
have. Take the time to look at them regularly.

i-Ready Diagnostic & Instruction
Good news! We now have a online and interactive tool that is designed to assess students skill sets and knowledge
for the purpose of creating an individualized instructional program for them. The areas of focus are reading and
math. Students of all abilities will make great gains using this tool as it is specific to each student’s needs as they
work to achieve mastery of concepts. The teacher’s role includes supporting the learning alongside the students,
monitoring their growth, re-teaching concepts, and using the performance data to create learning groups within the
classroom setting as needed. I-Ready can also be practiced at home! More information about this program and
how it is being used to support learning will be shared in parent-teacher-student conferences.
Best wishes for a restful an enjoyable holiday season,
Shelle Peterson, Principal

“Don’t give up!” “Don’t give up!” This is one small phrase we can use with our young adults to help them build resiliency, an area we have been learning more about, and discussing as a staff. Resiliency is the ability to ‘bounce back’ from difficult experiences, and to adapt well in the face of adversity, tragedy, or other sources of stress. Resilient adults and young adults have skills in common, all of which can be taught and strengthened regardless of age. Adults and children who are resilient tend to demonstrate the following characteristics: Sociability: Form healthy relationships Optimism: View self and the future positively Flexibility: Accept that change is a part of living Self-confidence: Move toward goals, base decisions/choices on confidence in their own abilities Competence: Are ‘good’ at something and are aware of their own skills Insightfulness: Understand people and situations Perseverance: Continue despite difficulty, they don’t give up Perspective: Try to see difficult situations in perspective. Views crisis as challenges to be faced, rather than insurmountable obstacles Self-control: Manage strong feelings and impulses. Parents, family members, and school staff are all in influential positions to work with young adults in helping them to build resiliency. Some of the ways that we can do that include:
Model and communicate the attitude that crises are challenges to be faced, not insurmountable obstacles, “Don’t give up!”;
Teach problem solving strategies;
Model and teach empathy (helping them to see a situation through another person’s eyes);
Promote strong adult-child relationships characterized by positive communication and encouragement at home and at school (feed the heart);
Interact warmly, minimizing criticism (focus on the positive, while managing areas of concern);
Promote sharing of responsibility (service to others);
Teach relationship building skills such as effective verbal and non-verbal communication and strategies for handling conflict and miscommunication;
Initiate conversations about emotions, offering healthy suggestions for expressing emotions (giving permission to feel the emotion, while understanding the importance of expressing it in a healthy way).
Helping the young adults in our lives develop resiliency skills will enable them to better manage any current crisis or stress they are experiencing at home and/or at school. Additionally, developing these skills will better prepare them to handle any crisis or stress they may face in the future.

Student Council Scoop
Student Council had a busy month in October! We put on a week-long spirit week
which honored everyday heroes. Also during spirit week, we sold and delivered candy
grams, had fun lunchtime activities and ended the week with a rally. Congratulations to
Kim for leading our school in this fun filled event. She led the students in spirit yells,
exciting games, and introduced the fall sports teams! Student Council also held an ice
cream fundraiser to help support Rylee, a student from Lassen View School who is
battling a rare disease that attacks the brain and central nervous system. We raised $250
for Rylee!!!
This month, student council will
also be doing a coin drive. The
money raised will go towards
Rylee and her family as well.
On Friday, November 14th, and
Friday, November 21st we will
be out at lunch collecting as
much change as possible for
Rylee, so save your coins and
bring them to school to help
support Rylee!
The Friday after we return from our Thanksgiving Recess, we will have our second
school dance. Mark your calendars for Friday, December 5th. Students had a blast at
the first dance, so you won’t want to miss the second one! We are looking forward to
another great time!!! Stay tuned for additional details!
Finally, congratulations to our student council elected officers: President - Kim R.(8th
);
Vice President - Caitlin B.(7th); Secretary -Kara R.(7

there is nothing more cozy than curling up on the couch with a good
book during the winter holidays so be sure and order by Nov. 14!
Books will be sent to Parsons & we will call you when they come in.

your child to get their fines paid. Students will not be eligible to
receive a Tiger card if they have a library fine.
