“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” – Seneca

The above words were documented around 2,000 years ago, and they still show us an important lesson today: The more time we spend working on ourselves, learning new things, practicing new skills, building new connections, the more prepared we become. The more prepared we are, more and more opportunities start to show up. The more opportunities we are truly able to participate in, the more freedom we have to choose what we want to do in our lives. “Good luck” doesn’t come out of thin air; it comes out of hard work.

Top Reasons to be a Support Home…

1. Giving - very beneficial for your emotional well being as well as the receiver.

2. Learning - broadening your opinions about differences in others and how they adjust and cope to live a satisfying life.

3. Growth - not only do you observe growth in a person who has to work a little harder to do simple things we take for granted, but we also grow as we become more appreciative in our abilities we take for granted.

4. Knowledge - The things I know and have learned to do now in my life I probably would never have learned anywhere else.

5. Acceptance - It's amazing to watch how accepting individuals with special needs are to others when they may not always receive the same acceptance in return. And also how this special community comes to accept you as someone they can trust and ask for assistance.

6. Financial - It is a good income.

7. Home Life - having a client live in your home affects everyone in your home and family, even those who live far away and gives them the opportunity to experience life with a special person.

On Monday, April 1, LINX will be starting the new semester of classes. The fact that we offer classes may come as a surprise to many of our followers and supporters. When people think of LINX, they may think of it only in terms of employment, outreach services and community involvement.

These classes provide a base of knowledge and experience and help enable our clients to be successful in their everyday lives no matter what the situation. About a month before a new semester begins, class descriptions are provided to clients. They individually meet with instructors to discuss their options and make their choices. LINX staff is always listening and providing feedback from clients as to their wants and needs. As a result, we have introduced many new courses over the years. This is a direct result of client self-advocacy…….which has been on the course list for the last few years. Some classes we offer are:

Community Awareness: clients learn about being a responsible community members. One highlight is that whenever there is an election, all candidates are invited to come out to discuss their platform. Each candidate is extensively researched, especially in terms of their beliefs and intentions regarding the disability sector. The class is always well prepared with a list of important and relevant questions.

Consumer Skills: This class ties in with the Cooking Class. Clients find recipes to use in cooking class, create the shopping list and go to the grocery store. While there, they learn to comparison shop between brands, check to see what is the best product for the best price and learn other smart consumer practices. In cooking class, they prepare the selected dish by reading and following the recipe. They follow the rules of kitchen safety. New to this semester is the creation of a cookbook of their favorite recipes. I can’t wait for that! As I’m sitting at my desk right now writing this article, the aroma coming from the kitchen is making my mouth water.

Dance/Physical Safety Awareness: At first glance, people may wonder the value of these type of classes but the benefits are far reaching. The dance class held at Connectivity Dance has been a place where participant’s self-confidence has soared. It allows them to move and groove without fear of judgement. In 2018, classes at Leduc Martial Arts Academy were first offered. The success was phenomenal. Besides learning the basics of self-defence, the far reaching effect happened outside of that class. This class created the foundation for increased social interaction and self-confidence as the participants came back to the agency and shared their experiences with other clients and staff alike.

Job Survival: this class focuses on the skills to survive the first 90 days at a new job. Work ethic, manners, boundaries, doing the job you were hired for, no whining, no excuses, integrity at work and getting your foot in the door are all topics for discussion.

Personal Ventures: This class investigates new ways to create items to sell. Past projects have been jewellery, dog biscuits and card making. This semester will be researching and making spa products.

Photography/Computers: Participants learn the basic photography techniques including how to edit on the computer. They also contribute to the monthly newsletter. An unexpected success of this class has been the many requests to purchase prints.

Gardening: Participants will choose the plants/seeds, how to arrange the planting, create the water and weeding schedule and decide on the tools needed. They explore nutritional components of the vegetables and once the new Canada Food Guide is available that will be studied as well. 2018 was the first year this class and it was exciting to see the results of their hard work. I was able to purchase some of the produce and the veggies were delicious. Proceeds of their sales went back into their fund to start this year’s gardening project.

These are only 7 of the 21 classes that will be running this semester. All classes are geared towards the continued skill development and personal growth of LINX clients. As the clients grow and change, so does LINX.

Chris Fischer, Autism Spectrum Disorder -

Chris Fischer is an American chef who also operates the Beetlebung Farm in Martha’s Vineyard to grow fresh ingredients! He wrote a cookbook ‘The Beetlebung Farm Cookbook’ which went on to win culinary awards! Chris is well known for being married to comedienne Amy Schumer. Amy recently opened up in her Netflix show ‘Growing’ about Chris’ ASD to help eradicate any stigmas. “I knew from the beginning that my husband’s brain was a little different than mine,” says Amy in the Netflix special.

Michael Weers! Michael has been an amazing

example of what it looks like to progress within the workplace. Within a year Michael has gone from getting two shifts a week, to three shifts a week, to four shifts a week! He has done such a fantastic job of maintaining his schedule and seeing to his responsibilities, and Michael’s employer has certainly noticed his dedication along the way! Keep up the amazing work, Michael!

Becky Baskier! Becky recently stood in the running to

become our Day Program representative for our health and safety committee… and won! Becky has shown a keen interest and genuine desire to be a part of this committee, and we believe she will do the job justice, alongside the other members in the committee. Congratulations Becky! And thank you for taking on this new endeavor!

The Leduc Rep! A few months ago, LINX

approached The Leduc Rep to explore the opportunity for clients to manage one of their paper routes. This route has employed two LINX clients on a weekly basis, and provides a flexible structure for them to work within. Thank you, Leduc Rep, for this opportunity!

Mekelle Hassen! Mekelle was chosen this month

for being a great outreach worker! For being willing to be the Residential Program representative for the Health and Safety Committee. For ensuring that clients safety needs are met. For being a wonderful role model for our practicum student. And for what I am about to ask her to do………..
