Who knows, you may get some new members, at least we’ll know who to contact! Editorial I was asked at a recent meeting of the Progress Association to explain its purpose within the Lilydale Community. It occurred to me that with all the new people now living in our beautiful area it would be a terrific idea for all our local groups to put together a short information article for the Progressive. Information about the group, their history, what they do and a contact person, so newcomers can get in touch. Our current President is Launceston City Council Alderman Annette Waddle. (Having Annette on board truly gives us an ear on Council happenings, and a voice for our concerns ;-).

If you look at the top left hand of this page you’ll see the Progressive has been produced, printed, paid for and delivered FREE to the local community for the last 29 years. Not bad going for a small community group.

Ok I’ve thrown down the gauntlet to all the other wonderful community groups here in Lilydale, let’s have some background on your group.

Most of our local groups have trouble getting members and this would be a great way to reintroduce themselves to the area. The piece wouldn’t need to be more than a paragraph or two in length.

So here goes for the Progress Association.

The group was established in 1968, became incorporated in 1997 and over the past 40 years has been actively involved in promoting and developing our village and its surrounding district. Helping to ensure the development of the village proceeds with care and concern for the needs and wishes of the whole local community.

Some of our Association rules state our purpose pretty well: • to promote & progress physical &

sociological improvements beneficial to members of the community of the Lilydale District.

• to facilitate access to, and to work cooperatively with Local, State & Federal Governments & their associated departments.

• to provide an avenue of communica-tion within the community, by co-ordinating & producing the print media periodical – The Lilydale Progressive.

So in a nutshell that’s what the Progress Association is all about.

Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch There was a good roll up at this meeting. It was our AGM. We had 2 new people attend and Kevin & Lorna Williams returned for the night. Const. Gavin Storay filled in for Const. Lyndsay Godfrey. Commander Glen Frame and Const. Amber Schnierer also attended as well as Ivan Dean who was our Guest Speaker.

Guest Speaker Ivan Dean spoke on his recent trip to the Kokoda Track. He is helping to raise funds for the Junior Diabetes Group and that is why he is sporting a beard. The Track was 96 kms long from Eastern Papua New Guinea and across the Owen Stanley Ranges and of that distance only 5 – 6 kms was flat country. The highest point was 2250 m which is higher than Mt. Kosciusko.

2000 diggers lost their lives, over 3500 were wounded and three times this number were casualties as a result of sickness. The emotional side was tremendous. It took 10 “Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels” to carry out 1 wounded soldier. The original soldiers suffered severe sickness and dysentery.

Ivan did a lot of training before he went. There were 17 people in his group and 5 of those were women. It took them 8 days to do the trip and they wore the same clothes for the entire time. The men carried their own packs all the way but the women had porters to carry theirs plus all of the other equipment needed for the trip. They clambered over tree roots and logs for over 70 kms and went through 40 – 50 raging rivers and streams and also on wet, muddy and slippery tracks. While they were over there they saw the Cemetery for the Australian soldiers. 4000 white tomb stones in perfectly straight lines. Ivan said it was a very gruelling trip.

Police Report Between 8 & 9 pm on July 26th. a wallet containing cash and cards was stolen after it had been left unattended on a bench outside the Lilydale Tavern. To date no-one has been charged.

Suspicious Incidents On Saturday, August 2nd. at 11 30 am, a person was seen chasing and trying to catch a brown calf in a paddock on a property on North Lilydale Road. The vehicle parked opposite the paddock was a white Toyota ute with 2 motor bikes on the back. When another person came along on his 4W motor bike, the culprits took off but the vehicle was later seen parked at the Lilydale Tavern about noon.

Hi everyone,

Spring is on the way! We have had some beautiful warm days of late but still some very chilly nights,

so there’s still time left to curl up with some chockies and a good book.

Father’s Day is coming up, perhaps a gift tin or canister of Ernest Hillier chocolates, or a box of

Anver’s truffles or fudge might keep him smiling? If dad likes a nice drop of wine, then what about the

Cocoa Farm Pinot Noir or Shiraz chocolate drops? There are also chocolate wine blocks – yum!

I have a new selection of gifts in the back room so please do pop in and have a look, and if you were

wondering, yes, I do take lay-bys.

See you soon,

Norma

Lilydale CWA Notes The Branch held their regular meeting on the first Wednesday of the month as usual, being in the Old Court Room this time as the church is being refurbished. We had a good attendance of members and a guest who came to see what CWA is about. Lilydale Branch of CWA warmly welcomes any lady in the district who would like to come along to a regular monthly meeting, to meet members and “give it a try”. You might find its fun, stimulating, challenging and friendly. There is plenty of support and some laughs, no pressure to do more than you can, just a group of women coming together to try to give something back to the community, and in so doing finding friends and common interests. Do consider CWA if you need to get out and get active!

The August meeting was largely taken up with preparation for the annual State conference, to be held in Devonport 26th August. We looked at suggested topics and position statements to lobby government & groups to improve the welfare of people and the lot of the community at large.

Next month Roll Call is to bring the contents for the Samaritan Boxes, but no food, sweets and no toothpaste are to go into the boxes this year.

A wonderful lady in the Lilydale area has been busy knitting baby clothes for the Baby Box which our Branch donates to the LGH for needy mothers, or knitted clothes for babes in the nursery.

Lilydale Fitness Group We would like to thank all the People who have shown interest in starting a fitness group in Lilydale.

Just a short update. We have enough people interested to start a group. We have a venue available. All we need now is an Instructor to take the classes, so if you know of anyone who may be interested, please let us know.

Please do not think we have given up, as with all new things, it just takes time to get a new project off the ground. We have been in contact with the school, and things are progressing.

We will keep everyone informed on the progress. Cheers from Irma and Jennifer.

Lilydale District School Our school is participating in Wonder School which is a fantastic initiative that can help us collect new sports equipment for our school.

All you have to do is collect specially marked empty Wonder School bread bags from the Wonder bread range and send your empty bags into school each week for your child to give to their teacher. Start collecting specially marked empty Wonder bags from 1st July to 30th September 2008.

We will collect as many as we can and redeem them for much needed sports equipment.

The more Wonder bread bags we collect, the more sports equipment we can get for the school so your support would be really appreciated and if you could switch to buying Wonder products it will make a huge difference to our sports department.

Simply log on to www.wonderschool.com.au if you want to find out more about Wonder School. Tasmania will be eligible to win $10,000 for the School that collects the most empty bags per student per School.

Pharmacy News: Health Notes: Haemorrhoids (Piles) These are far more common than you might think, although they aren’t the topic of many dinner party conversations.

Haemorrhoids are a bit like varicose veins in the back passage (rectum). These bulging blood vessels can be itchy, painful and sometimes bleed.

Bleeding from the rectum isn’t always haemorrhoids; so any bleeding should be checked by your doctor. It’s a good idea to get the doctor to check it the first time, just to make sure it’s a haemorrhoid and not something else that needs different treatment.

Some of the causes of haemorrhoids are pregnancy, straining at childbirth, straining to pass a bowel motion, constipation or diarrhea, heavy lifting and carrying, being overweight, chronic cough and cancer of the rectum.

There are many good products to treat haemorrhoids and they can usually be settled within a week of treatment. Proctosedyl and Rectinol HC are both very effective. The product should be applied after a bowel motion, after showering/bathing and at bedtime. Use sorbolene cream on toilet paper to clean the area before applying product. This is also a better way to clean the area after a bowel motion, as dry rubbing can irritate the haemorrhoid.

If they are swollen and painful, a cold compress is helpful. ‘Ice fingers’ are also very soothing. These can be made by cutting the fingers off a rubber glove, filling them with water and freezing them. Sitting on an ice finger will relieve the area very quickly, but keep the undies on.

Preventing the next haemorrhoid is worth working on, as they do tend to return quite frequently after you have had one. Preventing strain to the area is the key to preventing haemorrhoids. Learn to lift correctly, and don’t strain while passing a motion. This may require a change in diet, to ensure that your stools are always soft. Increasing fibre and water is a good start. Foods high in fibre include dried, tinned or fresh fruit; porridge and weetbix; lots of salad and vegies.

Mary Walsh Centre In the past month we experienced snow on Mt Arthur and really felt the chill, but that didn’t stop us venturing out for a bus trip to Scottsdale, where we enjoyed warmth and a good meal at Lord’s Hotel. Our driver, on the day, Malcolm Pollard, former Lilydale local, took us on a short tour up through Tongana before our return to Lilydale.

Karoola Playgroup During August we had an outing to Stories Bookshop. From the feedback from parents and children, it was enjoyed by all. The story telling is great and the kids have fun activities to do as well.

The children have decorated different masks with textas and glitter and they have been able to do painting outside on the easels. Playgroup was able to purchase a new wooden garage for the children using our vouchers from last years toy catalogues and this has been a big hit, with both boys and girls.

We have 3 Toy catalogues, Chalk, Toys & More and Parent Direct. If you would like to have a look please contact us at one of the numbers below. For every $1 spent Karoola Playgroup gets 20 cents in vouchers to be spent.

Lilydale Future Forums A big thank you needs to be extended to all those that participated in the recent Lilydale Futures Forum. It's not easy to commit to a whole Sunday when after all, we'd rather be spending time with our families. Many people did commit though, and some great ideas were suggested and after the second forum, ways have been put together to carry forward with these ideas. More information can be found on the following site; www.lilydale-tas.synathasite.com or join the forum to have your input at www.lilydaletas.net/forum/

From both of these meetings it was very clear that there are a lot of people out there that are very passionate about Lilydale and feel privileged to live in this vibrant community and wish to keep it that way. Many communities around Australia have diminished and even disappeared over the years, but there is a great determination out there to make sure this doesn’t happen to Lilydale.

There were 8 main passions for people at the last forum. Anyone that would like to contribute their ideas to any of these can go on the website and add them, or contact directly the people listed under each idea.

Healthy Lifestyle/ Lifestyle Choices: To promote a pleasant and healthy community, by fostering and promoting community culture and community interaction with a monthly community meeting night. This could include different events each time such as; a community café, poetry readings, music night, stories about Lilydale night, a pot stew night. Also use of sports facilities at the school and for adult ed courses.

Communication was also considered very important. Utilising the Progressive more, the www.lilydaletas.net website, a calendar of events on paper and online, a better noticeboard. Perhaps a community register –of skills, interests and passions.

This group’s short-term vision was for a major local community event in Lilydale.

Please contact: Dee Alford (6395 1561 [email protected]) with any ideas you might have.

Streetscaping And Improved Entry Roads: To improve scenic amenity, control of traffic, road safety, and improved parking, and inclusion of tourist facilities.

This group had a long term goal of rationalisation of approach roads to the village eg. wider, pathway/walking tracks and tree planting for traffic calming, and scenic improvement. Also needed was village streetscape enhancement eg trees, shrubs, floral displays, rationalisation of signage and colours eg of rubbish bins.

Village parking was considered a big safety issue, with provision of offstreet parking, rationalisation of traffic islands( as trucks sometimes need to drive on the wrong

side of the road to get around them) and kerbside parking with disabled access.

They felt a strong need for tourist information and facilities/improvements on information at the village green and appropriate physical access, street seating under the trees. On the agenda were various ideas for cycle/ bridle/ walking paths. They are hoping to include these ideas with the LCC planning for Lilydale.

To add any ideas please contact: Ian Williams on 6395 1062 or [email protected]

Promotion Of Lilydale As A Tourist Destination: to showcase this community, brand this district, and ‘get the place humming’. The promotion and ‘branding’ of Lilydale may involve; a main/ signature event, an annual festival, setting up a visitors centre, and will need to address funding and grant options.

A long term goal of a co-ordinated and integrated program of events/concerts/ theatre using various venues such as the Rhododendron Reserve or the Falls was suggested. A TSO concert, a big name singer, even a Tango Festival? Perhaps a comedy or sports carnival, big bike race or BMW motorbike safari, classic car gathering?

Once more a funded and coordinated visitors centre was called for to establish Lilydale as a gateway to the North-East. The Falls campground needs upgrading and enlarging as it overflows at peak times.

There is hope that there will be a Conservation Volunteers centre at Mt Arthur soon, and that there can be walks opened up at the Rhodo Park/ Brown Mountain Nature Reserve. Production of an information booklet comprehensively listing walks, events, features of the area, bike/ horse riding trails, camping, bushwalking is another possibility.

Lilydale Area Planning: to encourage a vibrant community with social and environmental diversity.

The ideal was a flexible planning scheme to include a variety of land uses, removal of a roadblock like PAL and addressing the meaning of scenic protection areas. There were many ways this could be accomplished, and re-zoning was only one of them.

A request was made to LCC to extend their planning survey area to include Lilydale, hence the survey enclosed with this issue. Please try to get it back to them.

Outcomes from this group were passed directly on to LCC as a Planning Officer was present at the forum.

The council is involved in consultation with

communities at the moment and they may come out to Lilydale again at some point. The forum has requested that LCC put in a submission to the PAL review coloured by concerns at this forum that forestry should be a discretionary use, not a preferred use of agricultural land , as it is now.

For your input, please contact Jillian Weston on 6395 1062 [email protected] or Simon Wearne – 6395 1158 [email protected]

Preservation Of Native Bushland: including protection of remnant native bushland areas, control of land clearance on private land, and limiting of new plantations. This was considered important for scenic amenity, for global warming reasons, provision and protection of native habitats for wildlife, protection of soil fertility for future generations and for health issues such as water and air quality.

The long-term plan for this group was to see an encouragement to landowners to protect their remnant bushland, a survey undertaken of wildlife species in the area, particularly wedgetailed eagles, a list of local native plant species put together, further campaigning to achieve a proper bushland/ wildlife reserve on Mt Arthur, and LCC controls on clearance of remnant bushland, as they have in other states. Again, a local Information office was called for.

Local Markets: as a source of local produce for local consumption. The passion was to link the community together and build a greater sense of identity, as well as attract tourists.

The plans were to encourage both a daily market by having a constant source of fresh produce, breads, flowers, jams., as well as a Fair/ Market with market produce in association with cultural events. The Village Green, was suggested, and moving to larger premises when the market is larger.

The short term plan was a start date of the 1st weekend in November as a prelude to a monthly/ fortnightly/ weekly market.

After the service, Lilydale members invited the Veterans to participate in a sausage sizzle at the Senior Citizens Clubrooms.

Lilydale Sub Branch were proud to host the event this year and extend their appreciation to those members of the public that donated goods and help on the day. We hope that this day will continue to be celebrated for many years to come.

Sub Branch News: Our branch meeting will be held on Thursday 18th September at 7.30 p.m. in the Senior Citizens Club rooms. A special event on the night will be a talk by Stuart Bryce, who has just completed the ‘Kokoda Trail’ with his daughter.

Keep your eyes open for the next bus trip, which will be advertised in the Progressive when planning is complete.
