THE LIGHTNING GURUS | COMPANY PROFILE 1
INTRODUCTION
Our goal is to provide our clients with the best possible service in the area of lightning protection and earthing. We do this by being experts in the field of lightning and lightning protection, using the most internationally recognized and up to date technology and techniques, purchasing only
the highest quality materials and using the best and most experienced installation teams in Africa.
That’s what makes us gurus…
OUR GOAL
We are a collective group of lightning specialists, project managers and master installers who are passionate about saving lives and protecting assets from the awesome but destructive power of lightning.
We have created installation teams who are lead by master installers all of whom have over 15 years of experience in the field of lightning protection and earthing.
Our installation teams have consolidated to form their own majority black owned company and are proudly called
INSTALLATION GURUS. We have made a commitment to empowering our installers to run their own company and push the extremely high Lightning Guru installation standards of workmanship to even higher levels.
Our business model is unique in that we have encouraged and nurtured ownership and responsibility of our previously disadvantaged installers, supporting and allowing them to gain entry into the earthing and lightning protection industry as business owners.
WHO WE ARE
South Africa is a country with a generally high annual lightning ground flash density across vast areas of our land, including many rural areas. We have unacceptable high death statistics from lightning every year, and significant damage to properties.
Our vision is to raise the standards of lightning protection and installations through constant education and training programs of the latest standards in the industry, and by partnering with the most knowledge experts in the industry.
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
THE LIGHTNING GURUS | COMPANY PROFILE 2
When we started this company, we recognised that our team needed to differentiate itself from our competitors if we were to lead from the front. And if we were going to be more “action” then “talk” we needed 100% commitment from everyone involved. We achieved this by ensuring that our whole management team has ownership in the business. We call this “having skin in the game”. This collective ownership is
what makes us different.
With a collective experience of over 50 years in the lightning and earthing protection industry across all areas of commercial, residential, thatch and solar and a commitment to masterful installations, we truly are “driven by passion”, “managed by experience”.
WHY CHOOSE US?

Jurgen Vogt started in the earthing and lightning protection industry in 1996 at Pontins. After a short stay at Pontins as a contracts manager, he returned to his studies where he completed a Marketing Management diploma and then moved into the lodge management industry. Jurgen also qualified as a project manager with Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, and managed several construction and interior design projects, including the construction of game lodges, restaurants and retail stores.
Jurgen has now brought his wide knowledge and experience from the construction, safari and hospitality industries, as well as corporate business, back into the lightning protection industry to head up the Thatch Gurus.
MEET THE TEAM
Kenneth Roets has been in the earthing and lightning protection industry for more than 10 years. He joined DEHN Africa in 2014 as a key account manager and business development manager, where he assisted various lightning protection installation companies with the installation procedures for DEHN lightning and surge protection products. Prior to working for DEHN Africa, Kenneth worked for Clearline Protection Systems, where his focus was on providing surge protection solutions.
Kenneth has been actively involved in the newly established Earthing and Lightning Protection Association (ELPA), where he assisted in formulating various installation procedures. He has also been instrumental in creating awareness within the solar industry of the importance of providing proper lightning protection to PV systems. Kenneth is also an active member of several of the working groups of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).

By using HVI mast technology we are changing the face of lightning protection for thatch structures. The significantly shorter mast heights required by using this technology results in a far more aesthetically pleasing solution. These technologies represent the most advanced method of creating separation distances. Our nationwide network of Installation Gurus have been expertly trained in these installation procedures.
This technology can also be implemented for existing thatch structures, where the old free-standing masts are bent or corroded, causing serious safety concerns.
We offer testing of existing masts as well as a full report on any existing lightning protection system installations.
Our thatch protection systems are underwritten and accepted by the major insurance houses, giving owners
absolute peace of mind that they have the best protection systems available.
With load shedding at an all time high the need for surge protection is higher then ever. We offer a full turnkey solution for all your surge-protection requirements.
Cutting edge technology now allows masts to be installed directly onto thatch roofs.
THE THATCH DIVISION
THE LIGHTNING GURUS | COMPANY PROFILE 8
In South Africa lightning strikes the ground over 24 million times every year. Homeowners are increasingly feeling the effects of the damages caused by direct lightning strikes as well as strikes that happen up to 2km away. Modern electronics are becoming increasing sophisticated, expensive and more susceptible to over voltages, surges and lightning damage. But it’s not just lightning that is the culprit, the increased occurrences of load shedding are a major contributing factor to surge related electrical damage.
We have designed a five-step lightning and surge protection system to protect your home and your most valuable assets against damages and down-time.
Step 1 is the lightning interception system. This system is designed to ensure that any direct lightning strike is intercepted by purpose-built air terminals. Depending on the risk profile, these air terminals are strategically placed on the roof of the structure. A properly designed interception system casts a zone of protection over the entire structure.
Step 2 is the guidance system. The guidance system is designed to provide several paths for the lightning current to travel down to earth. These down conductors provide the link between the interception system and the dissipation system.
Step 3 is the dissipation system. This system consists of a range of conductors and vertical earth electrodes buried into the ground. The dissipation system also known as the earth termination system is designed to safely dissipate lightning currents into the ground.
Step 4 is the equipotential bonding system. The bonding system bonds all conductive elements such as metallic water and gas pipes to the lightning protection system and is installed to prevent dangerous sparking inside the structure. The equipotential bonding of the electronic systems is essential in preventing damage to these systems.
Step 5 is the electronic protection system. The electronic protection system requires the installation of lightning and surge protection devices to distribution boards, control panels and electrical devices. A complete surge protection system must protect the power supply as well as the data and telecommunications supplies.
The complete TLG protection systems are based upon tried and tested lightning protection methodologies, are in accordance with the relevant SANS standards and provide effective protection against lightning and load shedding events.
We have partnered with most major insurance companies to offer free residential lightning and surge risk survey reports.

The compartmentalised approach to lightning protection system installations, where the designer, installer and inspector are separate entities, has been designed to provide the highest levels of competence and compliance. This system of providing effective earthing and lightning protection solutions was started in 2017, with The Lightning Gurus successfully completing more than 60 projects in the first year. As each individual Lightning Guru’s company grows, the number of completed lightning protection installations will also increase accordingly.
