Travel, with no regrets...

Vasundara (Vaz) had been in the corporate marketing field and whenever had time,

went for trekking, bicycling, skiing trips. She loves travelling and shared her experiences on her visits to various exciting places. Incidentally Vaz and Rohini are the daughters of Vidya Singh (ex-Rotary) and Rtn. PP Chandrakumar.

Rohini: What changed in your life that made you think of taking a solo trip?

Vaz: The reason to go on a solo travel holiday is when I realised that life was passing me by with no difference. I decided it’s time to create some life-changing memories and took off to South America on a backpacking holiday.

Rohini: Based on your travel experiences, how did you get out of your comfort zone?

Vaz: In India, we generally never go out of our way to make friends with strangers, and if someone comes and talk or sits with us, we tend to feel uncomfortable. So my natural instinct was to keep to myself. As the days passed, I realised that everyone was in the same boat as me, all looking to make friends. In the third meeting, all started chatting and making plans.

Rohini: How did this experience

change your apprehensions about a girl travelling alone, that too from India?

Vaz: Amazingly people were always surprised, as Indian women presume that world is a scary place. I had people supporting and encouraging me, but it needs a lot of courage to venture on our own.

Rohini: What have you gained and how did it transform you?

Vaz: Definitely, I have changed and feel lot more confident. My views on people and histories of other countries opened up. I made lots of new friends and feel like I would like to live a lot more for myself.

Vasundara shared safety guidelines and

her experiences in each place that she visited, like making friends with fellow travellers and updating the day’s plan, etc.

Vasundara pointed out the perception of family members when it came to women, and how they are brought up. We should allow our children to have the same experiences, not to be afraid, but encourage them to go out into the world. It’s all a part of learning to be independent, she said.

Vasundara covered the places she had visited by showing absorbing videos/pictures with interesting commentary – Peru, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Colombia.

Our health is everything. Yet 400 million people in the world can’t afford or don’t

have access to basic health care. We believe good health care is everyone’s right.

Disease results in misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide. That’s why treating and preventing disease is so important to us. We lead efforts both large and small. We set up temporary clinics, blood donation centers, and training facilities in underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access. We design and build infrastructure that allows doctors, patients, and governments to work together.

Our members combat diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and polio. Prevention is important,

which is why we also focus on health education and bringing people routine hearing, vision, and dental care.

HOW ROTARY MAKES HELP HAPPENDisease does not prevent itself. We educate

and equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases. Rotary members have hundreds of health projects underway around the world at any given time.

OUR IMPACT ON DISEASEThe Rotary Foundation is changing the

world by providing grants for projects and activities around the globe and in your own backyard.

Rotary makes amazing things happen, like:

Providing clean water: Rotary has worked with partners to provide more than 80 percent of Ghana’s people with clean water to fight Guinea worm disease.

Reducing HIV infection: In Liberia, Rotary members are helping women get tested for HIV early in their pregnancies. They used prenatal care to reduce new HIV infections in children by 95 percent over two years.

Ending polio: Rotary members have played a key role in bringing the world to the brink of polio eradication. Their efforts have not only ended polio in 122 countries but also created a system for tackling myriad other health priorities, such as Ebola.
