January 21, 2014, a frosty -12C, Frank MacDonald-Barra Construction opens the cement cap on the club wharf so the Engineer from CBCL can see what's underneath. From here the Engineering firm will draw the plans to begin restoration of the club wharf. Regular wharf update meetings will be held over the winter as work gets underway.

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE

Eighteen years ago I was elected Commodore of our Yacht Club for the first time. After serving for three years I was sure that would be my only run. I’m not a big fan of re-cycling chair people but here I am again. Believe it or not I am looking forward to the next twelve months as your Commodore. We have a great Board of Governors and many other members who willingly volunteer their time to make this club a wonderful place.

There are many things on our plate this year. As you read this newsletter hopefully you will appreciate the effort being put forth.

Please feel free to offer your ideas on any issue. The office is open most days so drop in, call, email or write! Remember this is your club. Use it and enjoy it.

A heartfelt thank you to Past Commodore Heather Harvey for the great job she did for the past two years.

The RJ Logue BYC Powerboat Championship Trophy returns home.

Rear Commodore Tyler Germani shows off the reclaimed antique trophy from the late '50s. The trophy turned up in Parsboro at an antique dealer's shop and Ed, of Ed's Books & More, promptly bought it and took it home to his shop in Sydney. That's where we found it. We reimbursed Ed for his trouble and brought it home to BYC. The trophy will be on display in the trophy case in the Tiller & Wheel Bar, the upstairs lounge at BYC.

New Staff at BYCGordon MacAulay is the new official

bookkeeper/club administrator and is already proving to be an able assistant to Treasurer Lyn Duchesney,

and Terry Kelly who oversees the treasury department and prepares the clubs financial

statements. Gordon replaces Connie MacAskill who provided excellent service to BYC over the past year.

Thanks Connie. Welcome Gordon.

Farewell Message from Heather

I had a fantastic time as Commodore, and I feel that we have done some wonderful things around the club, these past few years. There are lots of projects still in the works, but we’re well on our way to revitalizing our clubhouse and breakwater. There are some great things

happening on the Learn to Sail side as well.

None of this could have happened without our fantastic board and dedicated membership. So Thank You to everyone who has been so supportive of the club, and of me these past few years. I can’t explain how much I appreciate it, and how much I’ve enjoyed working with BYC, and with all of you. A special thanks to my family, as I have called on them more than once (ok, ok, more than 100 times) to help me with many different things around the club.

This past year has been very encouraging as to the heart at BYC, and what can be accomplished as a membership when we work together within the club, and the community. I look forward to watching our club continue to grow! I will continue on the Board of Directors as Past Commodore and hope to see the wharf project through to completion.

Beginning in Sydney Harbour and ending in St Peter's, with three nights in Baddeck on the 20th, 21st 22nd (Layover day prior to the Barra Cup Race from Baddeck to Ben Eoin. Learn to Sailby Kathy Anne Woodford – Learn To Sail Director

Learn to Sail continues to be a popular summer youth program with 84 youth, age 5-16, taking part in 2013. 42 participants received certification for their respective CANSail levels, and remaining participants received feedback on their progress towards achieving certification.

Second year instructor Donald Halfpenny, and first year instructors Chantelle MacIntyre and Kaetlyn Gillis-Dee did a great job and had, on several occasions, mentorship and sailing support from BYC sailor, former instructor, and master mariner, Kirk MacDonald. Our staff also had the opportunity during regatta week to work with passionate sailing instructor and competitor Guy Tipton. We plan continued development and support of our local instructors through courses like the Coach Boat Safety course we sponsored in June 2013.

Adult Sailing has not yet realized its potential with only 5 participants in 2013 with instruction in prams, CL16s, and keel-boats. The Junior Sailing program takes priority. Adult lessons are an additional tasks for the instructors. Given the relative inexperience of our LTS staff over the past two years promotion of adult lessons has been suboptimal. There is most certainly revenue potential in this sector of the Learn to Sail program.

Our fleet of prams has gradually been getting a face-lift. Last year we had four adopted prams that were in part restored; four new sails will be unveiled in 2014. Sean Baldwin has taken a template of the pram rudders and will produce thirteen new rudders for this coming season. At the end of last season, six more prams were distributed to club members to work on restoring over the winter. The club will offset material expense. The refitters are Bernie MacDonald,

Gordon MacRae,Willie Reid, Josh Green, Keith MacLeod, and Tyler Germani all contributing many volunteer hours.

The 420 fleet is now ten years old and needs a refit. I applied for Sport Nova Scotia grant in the fall of 2013 and received $2,500. This will be added to the $3,000 the Junior sailors and parents raised through tickets sales for an iPad and regatta week daily barbeques. An addition donation from the Blynn family of $600 has been received for this project. This winter, Baddeck Marine will be doing fiberglass work/repair, new standing rigging will be ordered, and as budget permits, new sails will be also be ordered.

Last year the Nova Scotia Dental Community grant of $5000 along with donations from Mercury Marine, in honour of Art McNeil, together with Baddeck Marine’s free installation has resulted in two beautiful new motors (20 and 40 HP four stroke motors) on our patrol boats. Michael MacLean, David Dunlop, Jimmy Anderson and our commodore Heather Harvey cleaned, painted and waxed the boats to complement the new motors. This investment in our safety equipment , thanks in part , to the Art McNeil Fund established last year, will see us through many seasons.

We continue to be supported by donations from many members who recognize the importance of youth programs and that the future of a yacht club is linked to the health of its sailing programs. Sean and Debborah Baldwin have committed to five year donations of $1000 and $500 respectively. We continue to support the ideal that No Child Will Be Left Ashore. If a kid wants to learn to sail and their family financial situation is such that they can’t, we will do our best to make it happen.





IWK RACE at BYCSeptember 27, 2014

Bras D'or Yacht club will host a NEW race in support of the IWK on Sept 27, 2014. This will be a pursuit race with a Bermuda start. Using PHRF handicaps to calculate start times, the boats will start in order of rank, slowest to fastest.

Mr. Dawson of Bedford Yacht club presented the idea for the race at the fall meeting of Sail Nova Scotia. His wife had been in an auto accident and their daughter admitted to the IWK. Mr. Dawson was so impressed with the facility he wanted to do something special in return.

The original Izaak Walton Killam Hospital for Children opened in 1970 with the help of a generous donation of $8 million from Dorothy Johnson Killam, wife of the late I.W. Killam. The IWK merged with Grace Maternity Hospital in 1996, becoming the IWK Health Centre.

Three clubs have taken up the challenge. Bedford Yacht Club, Indian Point Yacht Club and BYC. The IWK Race will take place on September 27, 2014 at all three clubs.

PLANS FOR THE NEW WHARF

The engineering designs were presented at the AGM and members got their first look at the plans for the reconstruction of the club wharf. If everything goes on schedule, the new wharf will be ready to open July 1st, 2014. Perfect timing for a celebration - Canada Day!

It is always an Adventure, whether participating in adrenaline filled racing or being independent in a quiet cove. It is Beautiful in every respect; boats, places and people. Craftsmanship skills are developed; it is a hands on activity. People with Disabilities can sail …. and win gold medals even. It is Environmentally friendly. Fresh air, Freedom, Families and Fun. Yes, I overdid it a bit with the F words! Generations can sail together, including grand parents and grand children. Humility. Nature is more powerful than we are. It is Inexpensive if you want it to be. Of course if you fund an America’s Cup campaign it might not be. It is Joyful. You develop your Knowledge of such topics as weather, navigation, charts, compasses, tactics, practical skills, etc, etc. You develop Leadership skills. It tests you Mentally; a thinking person’s game with a lot of strategy. You meet New and interesting people, all the time. Organizations are there to support you, such as yacht clubs. It is Physical. Great exercise. You spend Quality time with family and friends. You can go Racing, or cruising, or whatever. It is Safe. I have had a lot more injuries bike riding than sailing! It Takes you outside your comfort zone. We all need that. You Unwind, relax, recharge your batteries. There is such a Variety of boats, places, people, ages, skill levels.
