HELEN MORGUS WINS EXCELLENCE IN MISSION AWARD FROM
THE IDAHO EPISCOPAL FOUNDATION
The Idaho Episcopal Foundation has recently announced that Helen
Morgus has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Excellence in
Mission Award. In the words of the President of the IEF, Julie Slee,
“Helen’s work with the Haiti Micah Project, her passion for the poor,
and her active involvement in mission and ministry truly exemplify
excellence in mission.”
Helen has been a driving force in St. Thomas’ support of The Haiti
Micah Project (HMP) in Mirebalais, Haiti. The HMP was founded in
2005 by the Rev. Joseph Constant, a seminary classmate of Father Ken
and native of Haiti, after seeing rising numbers of poor children living
on the streets. Since then the HMP
has continuously fed, clothed, educated and provided medical care for more than of
400 children. St. Thomas parishioners have provided the support for roughly 90 of
those beloved children since 2010. With the political and civil turmoil that is Haiti
today our support is more urgent than ever as our annual sponsorship renewal efforts
begin in May.
The Excellence in Mission Award will be presented to Helen at the Bishop’s Banquet
on Saturday, May 14 at the Riverside Hotel in Boise. All parishioners of St. Thomas
are welcome and encouraged to attend in support of Helen’s achievements.

In an increasingly polarized world, the Wood River Interfaith Association seeks to strengthen the
bonds of affection between our communities and collaborate on areas of common mission.
Current members of the association include Janet Houts of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Rev.
John Moreland of Light on the Mountains Center for Spiritual Living, the Rev. Justin Brady of Our
Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, the Rev. Ken Brannon of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the
Rev. Mark Inouye of The Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood, and Rabbi Jim Mirel of The Wood
River Jewish Community. In addition, we are exploring how the Rev. Teresa Gregory of the Wood
River Inclusive Catholic Community might become involved given her recent history with the local
Roman Catholic Church.
Here are some examples of collaboration between our communities:
On Sunday, February 7, St. Thomas Church enjoyed a visit from Rabbi Jim Mirel. He preached at both
services and his sermon title was, “Is Anything Too Hard for God?” He also led an adult education session
entitled “First Century A.D.: Facts and Fictions.”
In his sermon, he wrestled with a difficult passage by Paul – 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2 – that suggests that Jews
have a “veil over their minds” when it comes to recognizing Jesus as the Christ (Messiah). Rabbi Mirel
sensitively explored this topic and suggested that while Jesus and the ensuing Christian movement may have
opened a unique path to salvation, this gift does not invalidate the covenant that God made with the people of
Israel.
In the adult education session, we had a lively conversation about the historical relationship between Jews and
Christians in the First Century. We discussed the fact that some gospel passages, which were written many
decades after the life of Jesus, seem to have an anti-Semitic flavor that has been hurtful to Jewish-Christian
relations over the centuries and should be interpreted carefully so as not to further exacerbate historical
tensions and misunderstandings.
On Thursday, March 17, at 7:00 P.M. the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood will host a concert by an
African Children’s Choir from Uganda called Watoto. This choir has sung at the White House, before the
queen of England, and with numerous well known Christian artists, including Chris Tomlin, Passion, and
Hillsong. The concert will be free and an offering will be taken to benefit the Watoto ministry. You can
learn more by visiting this link: http://www.watoto.com/the-choir
On Friday, March 25, at 12:00 noon, Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church will host an ecumenical Good
Friday service, which will include representatives from St. Thomas Church, Emmanuel Church, the
Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood, Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, and possibly others.
Members are encouraged to attend. Please pray that bridges of understanding will continue to be built
among people of all faiths.
A Prayer for the Human Family (BCP, 815)
O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with
compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our
hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our
struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations
and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Father Ken

NEXT OPPORTUNITY FOR BAPTISM
HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE
We are delighted that the Rev. Jesse Vaughan will be visiting St. Thomas
Church again from March 3 – April 12. He will be leading the Women’s
Retreat on Saturday, March 12, and will assist with preaching, teaching,
celebrating, and pastoral care. He will also be the primary clergy contact
from March 31 – April 10, while Father Ken is on vacation.
The vestry established the visiting priest program in 2014 in recognition that
the size of our parish warrants additional clergy assistance, even if we are not
yet ready to hire a full-time clergy assistant.

What a wonderful way to kick off the Playhouse year with a successful fundraiser for St.
Thomas Playhouse programs. Women from around our community, including many St. Thom-
as Church ladies, gathered at Elkhorn Springs Restaurant for an Austrian themed meal creat-
ed by David Fox of Silver Fox Catering and served up by our handsome volunteers waiters.
Playhouse artists dazzled the crowd with highlights from the
2015 season and previews of songs from Shrek the Musical
and The Sound of Music.
All the girlfriends were incredibility generous! The live
auction of Peter Burke’s dance class quickly increased and
ended with three dance classes each selling for $900!
The “Paddle Up” for the H. Edward Bilkey
Memorial Scholarship Fund brought in nearly
$10,000 to provide scholarships for children to
participating in Playhouse camps and programs.
It is inspiring how our church community has
taken Playhouse from a small ministry to the
force it is now. Thank you all for your support, prayers and generosity. This
year will be the best yet!

Kevin Wage sings “Lost in the Wilderness” from Children of Eden.
Our Mission: The Green team is a St. Thomas ministry that endeavors to advocate, educate, and articulate protection
of the environment. The Team intends to develop ministries and projects that are faithful, relevant, and
effective in promoting environmental stewardship.
We are pleased to welcome two new Green Team members: Patty Sloan and Christine Cernansky. Our committee
meets the second Tuesday of the month. The meeting time has been changed to avoid conflicts with the staff meeting
on Tuesdays. We will now meet at 11:00 a.m. Each meeting starts with the reading of our special prayer.
“Good and gracious God, we stand in awe of our power to create a magnificent world for us to enjoy
during our lifetime. Help us to see it anew as the wonder that it is. Open our eyes and enlighten our
minds to understand the power we hold and responsibility we have to keep it as a gift that we only bor-
row for our lifetime, to return to you and the generations that follow. Send your Holy Spirit to be here
as we reflect in our hearts and minds on your call to us as human beings and Christians to keep the
treasure, you earth, safe from harm. Amen.”
The next Green Team event is a presentation of the award-
winning film, “Chasing Ice.” It will be shown after the 9:30
service on April 17th, which is Earth Day Sunday. The film is
an hour and fifteen minutes long, but the time will fly by as you
snack on popcorn and movie candy! This film is not about a
cocktail party in search of ice or a hockey team looking for a
new arena, but about global warming, the calving of icebergs
and the melting of the polar cap. Please mark the date on your
calendar and join us for this informative and astonishing film.

CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRIES by Jessica Bejot
In January, I had the pleasure of attending the Forma Conference. As a professional
member of Forma, I am connected to 1,065 members of the Forma Facebook Group
and the nearly 600 official members of the organization. This professional network
has provided me with a door to the world of Christian formation. It has been a great
resource of formation ideas, resources, and fellowship. Having the opportunity to
meet these people in person, sit at their feet, learn from them, and share my/St.
Thomas’ story was of tremendous value. My attendance spurred a deep reflection on
formation at St. Thomas and within in the Diocese of Idaho.
“Forma is an association and dynamic community of Christian educators, formation professionals, and
their institutional partners that celebrate and upholds the diverse ministries of Christian formation across
the Episcopal Church” -episcoforma.org/about.
The good news is that we, as a parish, are punching above our weight by way of programing and offerings for both our
members and our community. We are also working near or on the cutting edge of ministry. We are not a community afraid
to try new things, to think outside the box or to shy away from serving. It brought me great joy and pride to share these
things with my fellow Forma members. There may be areas of growth for us to explore, but by and large, we are heading
in the general direction of Episcopal Formation on a whole.
I was not surprised to find myself as the lone representative from the Diocese of Idaho. Many dioceses in attendance
brought their Children, Youth, Adult, and Family formation leaders, both professional and volunteer, as well as their
diocesan staff representation. Attendance and support of formation on a diocesan level would be a huge benefit to the
Diocese of Idaho. I look forward to inviting others within our diocese to attend next year.
Conferences, in general, have a powerful way of cutting to the point with challenges, exposing areas of weakness, and
holding up amazing feats of ministry being carried out all around our nation and world. It becomes easy to get into a mind-
set of comparison rather than one of humility and thankfulness. As I look back on my conference sessions, professional
interactions, and new resource gathering, I am challenged to find the balance of both. Where can we at St. Thomas grow in
formation and where do we find thanks for the abundant gifts we already possess? I am thankful to have a support team of
the Rector, Vestry, Staff, and my Children and Family Ministry Committee to help guide these learnings as we move
through the new ideas, reflect on what we currently offer, and muse about where we could go. I know this is certain, St.
Thomas is blessed with great gifts, volunteers, and abundance in our ministry. I have no doubt that when it is time to grow
we will rise to the occasion.
I am looking forward with great anticipation to attending next year’s conference in Orange County California, January 25-
27th, hosting Nadia Bolz-Weber of House of All Sinners and Saints in Denver, CO as our key note speaker. If you have a
heart for formation please consider joining me. I’d be happy to share all the details.
The following are some dates on upcoming Children and Family Ministry Events:

MUSIC by Joel Bejot
The spring finds the completion of the festival half of the church year, which fulfills the promises announced at
Christmas. Our Savior was born, lived, died, and defeated the power of death through his resurrection. A little further
on, we also commemorate the Holy Spirit coming to the world at Pentecost.
I’ve been an Episcopalian for more than two years, but I find I’m just beginning to understand this aspect of our
Baptismal covenant: “Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?” The Spirit of
God is among us and sustains us and the whole world with his grace and power.
Maybe it’s especially important to remember this election season that Christ is present in BOTH Republicans and
Democrats. As silly as this may sound, I’ve found it one of the chief miracles of the modern age that we all – rich, poor,
young, old, large and small families, from all stripes of the political spectrum – can gather around the table and receive
blessings from our God. We are certain to disagree on aspects of our common life, but let us all strive to “seek and
serve Christ in all persons.”
Please consider joining me at any of the following:
Prayerfully consider how music may best serve Christ and our common life.
Sing with purpose and meaning, either in a choir or in the pew.
Attend services of Holy Eucharist.
Attend our offering of the Office, Choral Evensong, on April 24, 5:30 p.m.
Attend the Evensong Choir Concert on May 22, 5:30 p.m. which brings together music from the best of the
Anglican Choral Tradition.

ADULT EDUCATION by Don Liebich
The major Adult Education program in December and January was an extended series on racism. The series was
very educational about a difficult topic and prompted excellent discussions which featured personal experiences.
The sessions were well attended and there seems to be continuing interest. We are considering ways to continue and
expand the conversation. In February Rabbi Mirel of the Wood River Jewish Community led a session on 1st Century CE
Facts and Myths. The ongoing dialogue with our friends in the WRJC has been well received by all.
The spring schedule will include sessions on Biblical Accounts of the Crucifixion, Immigration policy, and a Lenten
series entitled ‘What Wondrous Love” led by Father Ken. In this series Holy Week and Easter come alive in challenging
video commentaries by academic luminaries, coupled with masterpiece illustrations by John August Swanson.
In May we will begin a thirteen session series on “Christianity and Islam: So much in common, so
far apart.” Each session covers a major area of the world's two largest religions, comparing and
contrasting them in a way that brings greater understanding of each. This program requires the
purchase of a short book and we will be asking interested parishioners to sign up. Stay tuned for
more information.
The spring schedule is:
February 14 Biblical Accounts of the Crucifixion
February 21 Biblical Accounts of the Crucifixion
February 28 Lenten Series – What Wondrous Love
March 6 Playhouse Tour “The Birthday Feast”
March 13 Lenten Series – What Wondrous Love

A first and second year class will be gathering next September. If you are a year around resident, please keep that in
mind.
There have been many part time residents who have told me they would love to join the class but only attend St. Thomas
when they are here in the summer. Here is your opportunity. We need to include 36 meetings and, if we concentrate as
summer school sessions often do, we can meet that goal with two 2 ½ hour meetings per week or one 4 ½ meeting per
week. We would meet from May through part of September.
Because our sponsoring seminary in Sewanee only ships materials
August through April, I would need to have all sign-ups in by the
end of March. If you are interested, call or email me right away.
We need a minimum of 6 participants for a class.
