God is Our Living Compass: A community journey to health, wholeness, and an abundant life 9:15 am | every Sunday through December | Huffman Hall Brought to you by a grant from the St Matthew’s Endowment Committee.
November 5 Dr. Mary Steinhardt, Resiliency researcher at UT-Austin Dr. Mary Steinhardt's research explores the determinants and methods for building resilience and strength when challenged with change and stressful situations. Current research projects focus on promoting resilience-based diabetes self-management programs for African Americans, reducing teacher burnout among public school teachers, and enhancing the resilience of military soldiers and their families. Dr Steinhardt will be introducing St Matt's to the science of resiliency and some practices we can implement in our own lives.
November 12 Larry Simon, Trauma Resiliency
A parallel Living Compass class will be taught for children and youth in the Youth Center from 9:00-10:15 am.
All Saints Day at St. Matt ’s: Morten Lauridsen ’s Lux Aeterna November 5 | 10:30 am | Sanctuary
The Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen will be sung during the regular sections of our mass. The Kyrie and Sanctus are from Messe Solennelle, Op. 16 by Louis Vierne. The parish choir is joined by guest singers from Chorus Austin and the University of Texas for this beautiful, haunting piece performed as we worship, being mindful of the cloud of witnesses—those saints who have gone before.
Lauridsen composed the requiem Lux Aeterna in 1997, the year his mother died. She was the muse who introduced him to music, playing swing jazz and singing to him as a toddler.
The five movements of Lux Aeterna are based on various references to light from sacred Latin texts: perpetual light, light risen in the darkness, Redeemer-born light from light, light of the Holy Spirit, light of hearts, most blessed light, eternal light—all supporting an earthbound spirit seeking not only mercy, understanding, and consolation but also renewal. Lauridsen uses the beginning and ending of the traditional Requiem Mass to open and close Lux Aeterna.

Veterans Listening Session
Saturday, November 11 | 10:30 am | Youth Center
One of the greatest gifts you can give a veteran is to take the time to listen to them. This Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, the Veterans Guitar Project will be performing at St Matt's from 10:30-noon in the Youth Center. A mix of song and storytelling from across our conflicts will deepen your appreciation for this national holiday. Doors open at 10:11 am and there’ll be a Eucharist afterward. Submitted by Christian Hawley
Today Good Faith Sunday!
As you remember and celebrate your loved ones—the St. Matthew’s cloud of witnesses—today, take a moment to pray for our Austin neighbors who are in need of rental or utility assistance. Might you honor your loved ones with a donation to the fund today? Quite simply, anything and everything you give to the Good Faith fund makes a difference in the lives of those we help—we continue to get many calls each day. Your gift, whether cash, a check with Good Faith in the memo line, or online, helps the Good Faith volunteers say “yes” as often as possible. The Good Faith committee thanks you for your con-tinued support and generosity. Submitted by Christine Havens

Women’s Story Circle— Ganne McCullough, speaker: “God’s Hand On My Journey” Sunday, November 5 | After the 10:30 am services | Huffman Hall
Although Ganne McCullough has been an Episcopalian all her life, she’s relatively new to St. Matthew’s, having been a member for slightly less than two years. In that short time, however, Ganne has become very active in the St. Matt’s commu-nity. In all she does, Ganne’s positive, outgoing personality is evident.
As suggested by the title she has given her talk, “God’s Hand On My Journey,” Ganne has faced significant challenges in her life. She’ll share some of them with us as she tells about her reliance on God’s guidance through everything she has faced, including her 23-year teaching career in Houston’s inner city, and her work in AA and as a Certified Drug Counselor.
We will meet in Huffman Hall for lunch and Ganne’s story after the 10:30 am service on November 5. Advance reservations are tremendously helpful; thanks to last month’s generosity, lunch is $7/person. Please contact the church office as soon as possible to make your reservation by phone (512-345-8314) or email ([email protected]). Child care is available, but must be prearranged with reservations. We hope to see you on November 5 for Ganne’s story! Submitted by Janice Watkins

Introducing: Online Giving for Commemorative Gifts
Giving a gift to the Permanent Endowment Fund (PEF) has been and remains a lovely way to make a commemorative gift that is personal, meaningful, and lasting. A gift to the PEF might celebrate a milestone, express thanks for a blessing, recognize an individual in a special way; or honor a loved one’s memory.
Giving a gift is now easier than ever. You can now do so securely online through the St. Matthew’s website. Simply go to www.stmattsaustin.org and click on the big red button on the right side of the home page that says “GIVE.” Then,
A new page will open with several options.
The last option is for gifts to the Permanent Endowment Fund.
Enter the amount of your gift, and if it is one-time or recurring.
Enter in the box to the right the person or event the gift commemorates.
Complete the process with your payment information and your gift will be made. Gift acknowledgment will not change—just the ease with which you may give.

Annual Thanksgiving Feast at St. Matthew’s
It’s that time of year again—time to give thanks for all that we have, and share a meal with members of St. Matthew’s and the surrounding community. This year, we are honored to welcome several guests, who are recently housed neighbors in our community, to our Thanksgiving dinner. They’ve been provided a stable home through the efforts of the Helping Our Neighbors (HON) group described elsewhere in the Weekly Word. We look forward to sharing a meal and conversations with them, alongside our church families and friends.
We will gather on Thursday, November 23, at about 1:00 pm., eat around 2:00 pm., and be finished by about 4:00 pm. You can cook at home and bring it, or cook it there; whatever suits your fancy. Everyone is welcome: kids, singles, couples, families, groups—the more, the merrier! For more information, or to sign up to bring a dish, please contact Patti Shannon (512-470-3491 or [email protected]) or Joyce Statz (512-346-5228 or [email protected]). Submitted by Patti Shannon

Offshoots Small Groups
Offshoots small groups are a chance for parishioners to share our passions with one another and our neighbor. This initia-tive grows out of the idea that wherever Christians are present, the body of Christ is revealed. So have some fun with these groups, get to know your fellow parishioners, and invite a friend to “come and see” a little glimpse of the Kingdom. If you want to form your own Offshoot with support from church staff and clergy, email [email protected] and [email protected]. Formation of groups is a rolling process throughout the year, so keep your ideas coming!

The Pantry is bare, we need your care!
There’s been a high demand for items at the Caritas Food Pantry this week so please help us to replenish their stock by bringing one non-perishable food item with you to church on Sunday.
They are either completely out of, or critically low, on the following items: Peanut butter Pasta sauces (in cans or plastic bottles only please) Canned ham Pork and beans Canned fruit Hamburger/Tuna Helper meals. Right now they have plenty of tuna and black beans. There is also a need for shaving cream.
If you’d like to contribute toward the purchase of perishable food items for the pantry, please leave a $1.00 or more in the money box on the table in the Caritas Corner of the Commons. Thank you for your generosity. Submitted by Jane Baxter Lynn

Children's Choir Wants YOU!
St. Matthews children's choir meets every Sunday during the Sunday school hour (9:15-10:15 am) in the choir room!
