AMONGST the most interesting and im- portant subjects which, from time to time, have been treated in The Life-boat Journal, is that of the means to be resorted to for the restoration of the apparently drowned, and it is one in which the NATIONAL LIFE-BOAT INSTITUTION has, for many years, taken the deepest interest. The Institution has spared no pains to elicit the latest experimental and theoretical improvements in those means; and it has spread far and wide the latest knowledge thus obtained by circulating throughout the United Kingdom, in our Colonies, and in foreign countries, a vast number of copies of the printed rules which it has adopted. On reference to the back numbers of this journal, it will be seen that, in the year 1857, the Institution first issued its own rules. Previous to that time it had provided its Life-boat stations with the rules of the EOYAL HUMANE SOCIETY, but in that year, the eminent physiologist, the late Dr. MAESHALL HALL, pointed out the two serious defects in those rules, that they neither provided for the ejection of any water that had been swallowed, nor for a return of respiration. The Committee of the Institution, thereupon, appealed to the medical world in this country, and to the public medical authorities on the Continent of Europe, for their opinion on the subject, the result being that the replies were so almost ex- clusively in favour of MAESHALL HALL'S " Eeady Method," as he had denominated it, that the Institution had no choice but to adopt the same, although they seriously felt the inconvenience of two systems being promulgated at the same time, as if by two rival bodies, for the information of others than medical men. The leading features of Dr. MABSHALL HALL'S plan, it will probably be remem- bered by most of our readers, was the alternately placing the body of the patient on its stomach and on one side, with about the same interval between each movement, as the periods of natural in- spiration and expiration. When in the former position the weight of the body and hand pressure on the back, caused the expulsion of any air remaining in the lungs, and that position was also favour- able to the ejection of any water swallowed; whilst, in the latter position, viz., on one side, the natural elasticity of the ribs and surrounding parts caused re-expansion with accompanying inspiration of air. For a period of seven years those rules were exclusively adopted and recom- mended by the Institution, and with ex- cellent results, but in the year 1863, Dr. H. E. SILVESTEB, of London, proposed a new method of artificial respiration, which he pronounced to be far more effectual than that of MAESHALL HALL, and much more easy of performance; more effectual by causing a deeper inspi- THE LIFE-BOAT JOURNAL.—VOL. AMONGST the most interesting and im-portant subjects which, from time to time,have been treated in The Life-boat Journal,is that of the means to be resorted to forthe restoration of the apparently drowned,and it is one in which the NATIONALLIFE-BOAT INSTITUTION has, for manyyears, taken the deepest interest. TheInstitution has spared no pains to elicitthe latest experimental and theoreticalimprovements in those means; and it hasspread far and wide the latest knowledgethus obtained by circulating throughoutthe United Kingdom, in our Colonies, andin foreign countries, a vast number ofcopies of the printed rules which it hasadopted.

On reference to the back numbers ofthis journal, it will be seen that, in theyear 1857, the Institution first issued itsown rules. for their opinion on the subject, the resultbeing that the replies were so almost ex-clusively in favour of MAESHALL HALL'S" Eeady Method," as he had denominatedit, that the Institution had no choice butto adopt the same, although they seriouslyfelt the inconvenience of two systemsbeing promulgated at the same time, asif by two rival bodies, for the informationof others than medical men.

The leading features of Dr. MABSHALLHALL'S plan, it will probably be remem-bered by most of our readers, was thealternately placing the body of the patienton its stomach and on one side, withabout the same interval between eachmovement, as the periods of natural in-spiration and expiration. ration, and more easy of performance, asonly requiring a movement of the arms ofthe patient instead of the repeated turn-ing of tho body.

The Committee of the Institution thenonce more appealed to the medical au- |thorities of the United Kingdom, and to alarge number of individual medical prac-titioners, for their opinion of the relative !value of the two systems. The result on jthis occasion was, that a large majorityapproved of Dr. SILVESTER'S plan onaccount of its simplicity and easiness ofperformance. Some, however, of theparties appealed to, and amongst themtho heads of the Naval and MilitaryMedical Boards, recommended a combi-nation of both systems, Dr. M. HALL'Sbeing first resorted to as affording meansfor the ejection of water from the body,which Dr. SILVESTER'S did not do, it re-quiring the patient to be permanentlylaid on the back.

Convinced of the great importance ofthe discharge of water, and having, duringthe seven years that Dr. M. HALL'S systemhad been in use, had proofs of its efficacy,the Committee decided to adopt, in future,a combination of the two plans, Dr. M.HALL'S being first used for a period offrom two to five minutes; and accord-ingly, in 1864, the Institution issued newrules embodying these alterations. At thesame time, however, as stated in an Ar-ticle on the subject in the July numberof this journal for that year: " It wasnot felt that the door would be shutagainst future change or reconsiderationof the subject, should the result of ad-ditional experience, or the farther inves-tigations of scientific men, make it appeardesirable to do so."

Another period of several years has nowagain elapsed, during which time numerousinstances have occurred of the efficacy ofthose rules, and proving the importanceof the retention in part of the MARSHALLHALL system. In fact, from the circum-stance that when large quantities of waterhave been swallowed, it is rarely, if ever,all discharged at once, its ejection being

often continued, at intervals, for a con-siderable time, it has become a questionwhether the " Eeady Method" of MAR-SHALL HALL should not be returned to atintervals of a fe.w minutes to facilitate itsdischarge. For there can be little doubtthat the presence of a large quantity ofwater in the stomach impedes the return-ing action of the heart and other vitalorgans.

We are now led to return to this sub-ject by the circumstance that Dr. BEN-JAMIN HOWARD, of New York, has nowproposed-a new mode of effecting artificialrespiration, and has forwarded to the In-

! stitution a Prize Essay written by himselfon the subject. As Dr. HOWARD'S plan,which he has, in contradistinction to that ofMARSHALL HALL, denominated the " DirectMethod," appears to us to be even more| simple and easy of performance than Dr;I SILVESTER'S, whilst it has the great ad-| vantage over his of providing in the first! instance for the discharge of water, weconsider it well deserving of the seriousconsideration of the medical profession,and feel sure that a description of it willprove highly interesting to many of ourreaders.

I DB. HOWARD entirely coincides withI MARSHALL HALL in considering it of vital! importance, that, in all cases of suffoca-tion, whether from drowning or othercauses, respiration should accompany re-suscitation. At the very commencementof his Essay, he states his opinion on thispoint in the following explicit and for-cible language:

" By whatever form of suffocation deathbe induced, whether by drowning, smoke,

j noxious gases, chloroform vapour, hang-ing, or other mechanical obstruction, theprocess of death differs from that of or-ganic lesion in this important particular:

! after the signs of life have vanished thereis a period during which life still lingersat its seat, its signs being subject to

j recall." This period is brief. It is usually too

i short for the procuring of absent appli-ances; the mere removal of the patient

to a place of shelter, involving the riskof forfeiting the possibility of resuscita-tion. For this reason, and because suchaccidents usually happen at inconvenientplaces, it is highly desirable that anyplan for resuscitation should include theuse of such means only, as are every-where, at all times, instantly available.Fortunately, experience has proved thatartificial respiration, for the performanceof which such means alone are required,is the only treatment upon which muchreliance can be placed. On this point,the opinions of the profession may nowbe regarded as settled.

The important question, however, stillremains to be finally decided: What isthe easiest and most effectual way ofproducing artificial respiration ?

1st. MARSHALL HALL, as we have seen,has proposed a method •which involvesmuch personal labour, and requires atleast two persons to perform it, as it re-quires the alternate turning of the bodyof the patient from face downwards toone side, and vice versa. It has, however,the special advantage of affording greatfacility for the discharge of water fromthe body, and it has proved efficacious innumerous cases; and, referring to it, Dr.HOWARD himself says: " The foundation-stone of all true progress in the art ofresuscitation was first well and truly laidby MARSHALL HALL."

And in another paragraph, referring tothe rejection of MABSHALL HALL'S systemby the EOTAL HUMANE SOCIETY, he says :"We have seen that, in spite of theopinions of many distinguished physi-ologists, the false principle of resuscita-tion by the direct application of heat hadbecome absolutely controlling. A revolu-tion, as complete as it was marvellous,was, however, effected by MABSHALL HALL,who in a few years succeeded in establish-ing the true principle; that which hasever since formed the basis upon whichthe art of resuscitation has been con-ducted. The principle is, that' Eespira-tion is the one source of vital heat.'"

2nd. Dr. SILVESTER has proposed a

method which can be performed by oneperson, if the tongue of the patient befirst secured and prevented falling backso as to close the air-valve in the wind-pipe ; but his plan has the serious defectof placing and retaining the body exclu-sively on its back, and thus affording noopportunity for the discharge of water.

3rd. And now, lastly, Dr. Howard pro-poses the method which we are about toconsider.

He first points out what he considersto be the difficulties and shortcomings ofthe methods of both MARSHALL HALL andSILVESTER, chiefly as regards the indirect-ness and insufficiency of the movementsto alternately expand and compress thechest, and their complicated nature, ren-dering their continuous repetition, at therate of fifteen times in a minute, almostimpracticable. He then states that he hadfor several years taught both methods inhis lectures to medical students, and thathis repeated failures to produce the desiredeffects in his attempted demonstrations,and the difficulty he found in makingthem readily understood and efficientlypractised by others, led him to endeavourto strip them of their superfluities, andreduce them to their simplest terms,which resulted in the "Direct Method"that he now proposes.

Dr. HOWARD remarks, that " the one•object of both methods is compressionand expansion of the chest." How, then,can that object be most directly and easilyperformed, with the least amount of fatigueto the performer of the operation. Hethen points out, in his preliminary obser-vations, that the lungs have no positiveaction of their own, but that they areexceedingly elastic, expanding and con-tracting with the expansion and contrac-tion of the chest, and always completelyfilling it; that there are sets of move-ments belonging to different parts of thechest, producing the different forms ofbreathing designated, respectively, thesuperior costal, the inferior costal, and theabdominal types; that the provision forfree and extensive movements is confined

exclusively to the lower part of the chest;that while all the ribs above have butlittle cartilage, and are united directlywith the sternum (the breastplate of thechest), all those below the seventh to thetwelfth ribs have a very extensive supplyof cartilage, and are not joined directly tothe sternum, but are so free anteriorly asto be not inaptly called the floating ribs(vide Fig. I.); that the entire floor or baseof the chest is composed of the musculo-membraneous diaphragm, which by itscontractions produces that type of breath-ing called abdominal, because of themotions it communicates to the abdomenby the alternating pressure it exercises OBits contained viscera.

He then proceeds to state, that thesuperior and inferior types of costalbreathing are neither of them essential tolife; and that health as well as life maybe maintained by abdominal respirationalone, provided the person remain inrepose; the superior costal type beingonly used for forced inspirations, such asmay be required in unusual exertions.

Lastly, that in accordance with theanatomy of the parts, ordinary breathingusually combines the inferior costal andthe abdominal types, the parts of thethorax called by them into action com-prising all which afford the greatest \motion, change of thoracic capacity, andexchange of air in the lungs; all whichholds equally whether the force causingthe motions of those parts be vital, andfrom within, or mechanical, and fromwithout.

In imitating natural inspiration, then,by substituting mechanical for the vitalforce, it is to those parts such forceshould be applied, and in such a way asmost nearly to produce the motion ob-served in healthy breathing.

He then proceeds to describe Ms methodas follows:—

THE DIEECT METHOD.

Bute I. Arouse the patient.—Unless indanger of freezing, do not move thepatient an inch; but instantly expose the

face to a current of fresh air, wipe drythe mouth and nostrils, rip the clothing,so as to expose the chest and waist, andgive two or three quick smarting slaps onthe stomach and chest with the openhand.

If the patient does not revive, thenproceed thus:—

KULE II. To draw off water, &c., fromthe stomach and chest. (Vide 3?ig. II.)—Turn the patient on his face, a largebundle of tightly-rolled clothing beingplaced beneath his stomach, and pressheavily over it for half a minute,' or solong as fluids flow freely from themouth.

EUIE HI. To pradduce "breathing. (VideFig. III.)—Place the patient on his back,the roll of clothing being so placed be-neath it as to raise the pit of the stomachabove the level of any other part of thebody. If there be another person present,let him, with a piece of dry cloth, holdthe tip of the tongue out of one cornerof the mouth, and with the other handgrasp both wrists and keep the armsforcibly stretched back above the head.(This position prevents the tongue fromfalling back and choking the entrance tothe windpipe, and increasing the promi-nence of the ribs tends to enlarge thechest; it is not, however, essential tosuccess.)

Kneel beside, or astride, the patient'ships, and with the balls of the thumbsresting on either side the pit of thestomach, let the fingers fall into thegrooves between the short ribs, so as toafford the best grasp of the waist. Now,using your knees as a pivot, throw allyour weight forward on your hands, andat the same time squeeze the waist be-tween them, as if you wished to fotceeverything in the chest upwards out ofthe mouth; deepen the pressure whileyou can count slowly one, two, three,then suddenly let go with a final push,which springs you back to your firstkneeling position. "Remain, eteet <m ^ovaknees while you can count one, two; thenrepeat the same motions as before, at a

rate gradually increased from four or fiveto fifteen times in a minute, and continuethus this bellows movement with thesame regularity that is observable in thenatural motions of breathing which youare imitating.

Continue thus far from one to twohours, or until the patient breathes; forawhile after carefully deepen the firstshort gasps into full breaths, and con-tinue the drying and rubbing, whichshould have been unceasingly practisedfrom the beginning.

BULE IV. After treatment. Externally.—As soon as the breathing has becomeestablished, strip the patient, wrap him inblankets only, put him in a bed com-fortably warm, but with a free circulationof fresh air, and leave him to perfectrest.

Internally.—Give a little hot brandyand water, or other stimulant at hand, forevery ten or fifteen minutes for the firsthour, and as often thereafter as mayseem expedient.

The advantages which Dr. HOWAEDclaims for his method, as compared withthose of MARSHALL HALL and Dr. SIL-VESTER, are summarised by him as fol-lows :—

I. It combines the merits of the othermethods, and has the following besides:

1. To the greatest " thoracic expan-sion " it adds a " compression " not foundin any previous method, and so. yields agreater exchange of air in the lungs.

2. No time is wasted and no harm isdone by superfluous motions.

3. Obstructive fluids are removed bydrainage as well as by ejection. This isnot done by any other method.

4. It can be applied on the spot, forth-with, wherever the patient's chest can bereached by the operator.

II. It is more effective; because1. The respiratory motions are seen

and felt, and can be accurately regulatedby the hands of the operator.

2. Any other means, such as friction,electricity, insufflation, inhalation with

oxygen, warm bath, &c., may be usedsimultaneously with the " Direct Method,"without causing interruption or incon-venience.

III. It is more easy to be understood;because,

1. There is but one movement.2. The object of the movement is self-

evident.IV. It is more easy to be performed;

because,1. The chief source of compression is

the weight, not the strength, of theoperator.

2. The attitude of the operator isconvenient.

3. The movement is simple and limited.4. Each movement is followed by a

period of complete rest.After careful consideration of Dr.

HOWARD'S method, in conjunction withthose of Dr. SILVESTER and MARSHALLHALL, we feel convinced that as regardsthe ease with which it can be performedit is superior to both, whilst it has thespecial advantage over Dr. SILVESTER'S,that it affords an opportunity, at theoutstart, for the discharge of water. Weconsider, however, that Dr. HOWARD ismistaken in supposing that it is sufficientto afford an opportunity for water toescape at the commencement of the treat-ment, since numerous reported casesprove that it is frequently discharged atrepeated and varying intervals.

We also think it questionable whetherthere is so great an advantage as bothDr. HOWARD and Dr. SILVESTER claim fortheir methods over MARSHALL HALL'S, inthe circumstance that they inject andeject a greater quantity of air throughthe lungs. If the blood supplied to thebrain by the heart be of full amount, aproportionate amount of air will be re-quired to oxidize and vivify it; a factwhich nature teaches us by the circum-stance of our involuntary quicker breath-ing when, by running or other unusualexertion, we have quickened the circula-tion of our blood. Not only, however, issuch the case, and therefore, when the

heart has almost ceased to palpitate, and ,the blood supplied to the lungs is small iin amount, may a small amount of airbe sufficient to oxidize it; but is it notworthy the consideration of medical men,whether, just as a candle or a spark maybe extinguished by the powerful currentof air which will excite a furnace to awhite heat, it may not be possible thatthe feeble flame of life, then nickering inthe heart, may not be extinguished by atoo fierce blast of air in the lungs; andwhether the success, which has un-doubtedly in numerous well-attested casesresulted from MARSHALL HALL'S " KeadyMethod," may not be to some extentattributed to the gentle fanning of thevital spark, which is effected by thatoriginal and ingenious plan.

Those, however, are points which mustbe decided by future experience, and thefurther consideration of the medicalworld; which experience and considera-tion will, no doubt, be awaited by theNATIONAL LIFE-BOAT INSTITUTION beforeit again alters its Eules for the Kestora-tion of the Apparently Drowned.

We append the figures (vide Figs. 4,5, 6, and 7) illustrating the methods ofDr. MARSHALL HALL and Dr. SILVESTER,as at present adopted by the Institution,in order that a general idea may beformed of Dr. HOWARD'S proposed system,in juxtaposition with others.

The last two Illustrations (Figs. 6 and 7) show the position of the Body during the employment of Dr.Silvester's Method of Inducing Respiration.

ADDITIONAL STATIONS AND NEW LIFE-BOATS.

WEXFOBD, IRELAND.—The No. 1 (large)Life-boat, placed at Wexford about four-teen years since, having become unfit forfurther service, it was replaced by theInstitution in November, 1871—a veryfine boat, 40 feet long and 10 feet wide,being specially built for the station. Thisboat is always kept afloat, and is usuallytowed out to the outlying sand-banks offthe coast by a steamer on the occasion ofwrecks. It is, however, provided withmasts and sails, and rows twelve oars,double-banked. The new Life-boat wasthe gift to the Institution of " J. M. S.,"

of London; it is named the Ethel Evdeen,after his daughter. It was taken toWexford by railway, and sailed andtowed thence across the Channel in com-pany with the revenue cruiser PrincessCharlotte, four of the crew of that vesselgoing in the boat, which was under thecharge of Capt. D. ROBERTSON, R.N., theAssistant Inspector of Life-boats to theInstitution. It may here be mentionedthat during the past few years the twoLife-boats on the Wexford station havebeen instrumental in saving no less than153 lives from different wrecks. On these

and other occasions the Institution hasgranted 470?. as rewards to the Life-boatcrews, in addition to various expensesamounting to 1,680Z. incurred in providingand maintaining these two Life-boats.

FlAMBOBOUGH, YORKSHIRE. The NA-TIONAL LIFE-BOAT INSTITUTION has formedtwo Life-boat establishments, at Flam-borough Head, the famous promontory onthe coast of Yorkshire, it having been

suggested as a desirable place for Life-boats, where plenty of fishermen are resi- 'dent to work the boats.

One boat is stationed on the northbeach, and the other on the south one, andsubstantial and commodious houses havebeen erected for their reception. Thewhole of the shore in this neighbourhoodis rocky and precipitous, with the exceptionof these two beaches, one on either side of

the Head, and they are so situated thatwhen one is exposed to the wind and seathe other is always under shelter; and,accordingly, most of the fishermen, whonumber nearly 400, have each two fishingcobles; one of which they keep on onebeach, and one on the other—using theboat on the lee side in bad weather—whichplan will be adopted with the Life-bpats;the village of Flamborough, where the

crews reside, being equi-distant from bothbeaches. Each Life-boat is 33 feet long,and rows ten oars, double-banked. Theexpense of the north (No. 1) boat was metfrom a legacy bequeathed to the Insti-tution by- the late JOHN STANIFORTHBECKETT, Esq., of Tormoham, Devon, theboat being named the Gertrude. The costof the other boat—named the 8. Michaels—was defrayed from a Life-boat fundraised principally through the exertionsof the Eev. G-. F. PHESCOTT, M.A., Eectorof S. Michaels, Paddington, Mr. W. VIN-CENT, and others. The boats were placedon their stations in November, 1871, andwere tried in a strong wind and moderatesea, when they rowed and sailed well, andgave much satisfaction to the crews.Capt. J. E. WARD, E.N., the Inspector ofLife-boats, who took out the boats, wasaccompanied by Capt. H. STEENGRAFE, theInspector of Life-boats to the GermanLife-boat Society.

SUNDERLAND.—The three Life-boats be- |longing to the Sunderland Shipowners'Society, have, at the request of that body, jbeen transferred to the management ofthe NATIONAL • LIFE-BOAT INSTITUTION,which had previously had a Life-boat ofits own at the port, named the FlorenceNightingale. The Society has, at a largeexpense, placed the three Life-boat estab-lishments, as well as its own, in a stateof complete efficiency; a new house havingbeen built at the No. 1 station, and anew Life-boat, carriage, boat-house, andlaunching slipway provided for the No. 4station ; while the other two stations havebeen put in first-class order. The muni-ficent sum of 680?., being the usual costof a Life-boat establishment, was presentedto the Institution on behalf of the^No. 4Life-boat by Mrs. ELIZA FOULSTON* of SouthKensington, and formerly of Plymouth, inmemory of her late husband, after whomthe boat is named the John Foulston. TheLife-boat station was inaugurated on the6th Feb. last, when the boat was launchedin the presence of a large concourse ofpersons, and which, no doubt, would havebeen much larger if the day had not, un-fortunately, turned out wet.

The Mayor, WM. NICHOLSON, Esq., waspresent, to accept the Life-boat on behalfof the town, supported by the members ofthe Local Committee, of which Mr. ALDER-

MAN EEID is the chairman, and JOHNLAMBTON, Esq., the treasurer, J. HORAN,Esq. being the present hon. secretary.

The three other Sunderland Life-boats,and the one stationed at Whitburn, whichis also under the management of the Sun-derland Committee, had been launchedand assembled on the spot to show to allassembled the complete state of the Sun-derland Life-boat establishments, and theband of the local police was also present,and played at intervals throughout theproceedings.

When all was in readiness, the In-spector of Life-boats, after referring brieflyto the circumstance of the SunderlandShipowners' Life - boat Society havingmerged in the NATIONAL LIFE-BOAT IN-STITUTION, which had taken all the Life-boats of the locality under its manage-ment, and expended a large sum in com-pleting and renovating the establishments,formally inaugurated the new boat, OHbehalf of the Institution and of Mrs.FOULSTON. He stated that, looking tothe importance of the port, and its greattrade, the Committee in London haddetermined to make the establishmentsas efficient and as complete as possible;and had, accordingly, expended a muchlarger sum on them, than was customary,but that they trusted fhe wealthier mem-bers of the local community WQuJd all themore readily come forward $ith theirsubscriptions in support of them, seeingthat the Institution had now no less than233 Life-boats stationed round the wholecoasts of the United Kingdom. That theywith confidence handed over to them theirnew boat, and felt sure that the boatmenof the port would likewise, perform theirshare of the humane work, by the exerciseof their courage and skill whenever their•services might be required.' The Mayor, in reply, expressed, onbehalf of himself and townsmen, theirsense of the liberality of the donor ofthe boat and of the Institution, which hehoped would be liberally responded to,and stated that the work of saving lifefrom Shipwreck was happily one whichevery one must feel to be a good one, andin the promotion of which all couldcordially unite.

Mrs. NICHOLSON, the Mayoress, thenbroke a bottle of wine on the boat, andnamed it the John Foulston, and it imme-diately ran down the new slipway, and

was warmly cheered by the multitudeassembled.

The whole five Life-boats then rowed amatch for some small prizes given on theoccasion, and the proceedings terminated.

The new boat, which is a very fine one,36 feet long, and rowing twelve oars, wasgenerally much admired, as was also thesubstantial and handsome boat-house pro-vided for it.

HOWTH, DUBLIN BAT.—A" new 33-feet10-oared Life-boat and carriage have beenprovided for this station in the place ofthe smaller single-banked boat, which thecrew did not consider was powerfulenough to meet the requirements of thelocality. They were conveyed, free ofcharge, to their destination in Februarylast, on board one of the steamers of theBritish and Irish Steam-Packet Company.The expense of the boat and equipmentwas defrayed by a Friend, through MissBAKER and THOMAS CHAPMAN, Esq., F.E.S.,the Deputy Chairman of the Institution,the boat, at the request of the donor,being named the Clara Baker.

TTNEMOTTTH, NORTHUMBERLAND. — TheInstitution has furnished to this stationa new Life-boat, 33 feet long, 8 feet 1 inchwide, and rowing 10 oars, double-banked,with transporting-carriage, in the place ofa smaller boat. The new one has beenappropriated to the Ancient Order ofForesters, it being named the Forester.The Order has liberally presented twoboats to the Institution, and it also con-tributes every year towards the main-tenance of its boats.

PORTHCAWX, SOUTH WALES.—The small6-oared boat on this station was found,from experience, to be hardly large enoughfor the place, and it has been replaced bya new boat, 32-feet long, 7i feet wide, andpulling 10 oars, double-banked. A new

• transporting-carriage was also sent withthe boat. The expense of the same wasthe gift to the Institution of Miss J. E.CHAFYN GROVE, a lady residing in Wilt-shire, the boat being given as a memorialof her late brother, who was a liberalbenefactor to the Life-boat Society, andafter whom the Life-boat is named theChafyn Grove. A pleasing demonstrationtook place on its arrival at its stationlast March. A procession was formed,which escorted the boat on its carriage to

the Newton Sands, when three cheers wereheartily given for the benevolent donor,who had paid a special visit to the Life-boatstation on the occasion of the first launchof her boat. Miss CHAFYN GROVE thenpresented the boat to the Inspector of Life-boats, on behalf of the Institution, andnamed it in the usual way by breaking abottle of wine over its bows, expressinga wish at the same time that God mightprosper it. Afterwards the boat waslaunched from its carriage into the sea.Heavy snow-storms prevailed during theday, but they fortunately kept away duringthe whole ceremonial, and everything con-nected with it passed off very well.

DHOGHEDA, IRELAND. — A distressingShipwreck (that of the brig Manly, ofWhitehaven) having taken place on thesouth shore of the Boyne, outside Drog-heda Harbour, the local residents ex-pressed a desire that an additional Life-boat station might be established in thatdistrict. Accordingly the Institution de-cided, after mature consideration, to forma Life-boat establishment at Mornington,on the south side of the mouth of the

I Boyne, in addition to the original stationI on the north side. A new 10-oared boat,32 feet in length by 7J feet in breadth,

I was sent there, with a transporting-car-i riage, in July last, and placed in a com-' modious boat-house built for them on aI suitable site. The expense of the Life-boat was met by a legacy bequeathed to

i the Institution by the late HENRY FOTHER-! GILL CHORLEY, Esq., of Eaton Place West,with the view to a Life-boat, named theJohn Butter Charley, being placed on thecoast. The Life-boat and carriage were

j granted a free conveyance from Londonto Dublin on board one of the steamers ofthe British and Irish Steam-Packet Com-pany. On the 7th August, the Assistant-

j Inspector of Life-boats had the Life-boatj conveyed on its carriage from the boat-j house to Bettystown Strand, a distance ofI nearly three miles, to show those who hadj been of opinion that it was not possibleI to transport the Life-boat there in timeto be of any service in the event of awreck in that direction, that it could bedone. The boat was then launched closeto the place where the wreck of the ill-fated Manly took place, and the crew putthrough the usual exercise.

SEEVICES OF THE LIFE-BOATS OF THE NATIONAL LIFE-BOATINSTITUTION—continued.

GREAT YARMOUTH AND CAISTER. — Onthe 24th September, 1871, while it•was blowing strongly from the S.E.,and a heavy sea was running, a vessel atanchor on a lee shore, near Caister, ex-hibited signals of distress. The No. 1Life-boat on that station, the Birmingham,was thereupon launched, but there was somuch sea on the beach, that she was filledwith water before she was got off. Onreaching the vessel, which had five feet ofwater in her hold, and which was theschooner Angora, of Bangor, the beachmenboarded her, and with the aid of the crewsucceeded in getting the water under, anda steam-tug coming up, the vessel andthose on board were safely taken intoLowestoft Harbour. On their way thesloop Trafalgar, of Cley, was seen withsignals of distress in the rigging. Leavingthe schooner in the care of the steamer, theLife-boat men proceeded to the other vessel,and found she was in great peril, as shewas leaking very fast, had lost one anchorand cable, and had only 2 men on board,one of whom had only one hand. Thepoor fellows were very glad to avail them-selves of the assistance of several of theLife-boat men, who cleared the sloop ofwater, and took her also into LowestoftHarbour.

Again, Oh the 31st October, the brigan-tine Noroal, of Seaham, while lying atanchor in Yarmouth Roads, sprang a leak,and the water gained on the vessel so fastthat signals of distress were made, where-upon the Caister No. 1 Life-boat put offto the assistance of the vessel, and wasfortunately enabled, with the help of asteamer, to take her safely into the harbourat Gorleston, by which time she had ninefeet of water in her hold.

On the 14th November both the Life-boats on the Caister station, as well asthe Yarmouth No. 1 Life-boat, the MarkLane, went off to the assistance of thescrew-steamer Benjamin Whitworth, ofMiddlesborough, which had grounded onthe Cross Sand, near Great Yarmouth.The Caister No. 2 Life-boat, the • Boys,first proceeded to the stranded vessel, tobe in readiness in case during the nightthe weather should get worse, when theposition of those on board, including 38

men from the shore who had gone torender assistance, would be very perilous.By 10 o'clock at night the wind hadincreased to a heavy gale from the south,and the Life-boat was driven from theship, and being unable to regain her, thecrew made for the shore, and took outtheir larger No. 1 Life-boat, which cameto the steamer, and lay by her until shecame off the Sand. The Yarmouth No. 1Life-boat had also gone out to the steamer,but her 'services were not called intorequisition.

On the 6th December the brig Champion,of Shoreham, was observed in the direc-tion of the Gorton Sand during a N.E.gale, with a heavy sea. The YarmouthNo. 1 Life-boat put off to her assistance,and found that she was riding on the topof the sand, with a very heavy sea break-ing around her. The anchors of thevessel were then slipped, and with theassistance of the Life-boat she was gotround before -the wind; the Life-boatcrew afterwards boarded her and broughther to anchor, and, with some assistance,got her safely into harbour.

On the same day, the Caister No. 2Life-boat was launched during a stronggale from E.N.E., and was fortunatelyenabled to get the Norwegian brig Typhonoff the Barber Sand, and to take hersafely into Yarmouth Harbour. Therewas a heavy sea on the sand, the breakersfalling on the ship's deck, and the sprayflying up to her lower yards.

On the following day a brig was seenburning tar-barrels very near the breakerson Yarmouth Beach, during a fresh windfrom E. by S. The Yarmouth No. 2 Life-boat, the Duff, was at once taken to thespot, and, after much difficulty, waslaunched through the surf, and, on reach-ing the vessel, took out the crew, androde some distance from the ship, until4 o'clock the next morning, when a steam-tug came out of the harbour, and afterthe crew had again been put on boardthe vessel, she was towed into harbour.She proved to be the brig Azela, of Blyth.

PETEHHEAD, N.B.—A severe gale wasexperienced at Peterhead, N.B., on the22nd September, and two heavily-laden

fishing-boats which had been proceedingnorthward made for the harbour. One,being more to the southward, was enabledto sail wi^h.j-her bow to the sea; but hercompanion, the George and Ann, of Cairn-bulg, being to the northward, had to runbefore the" spa, a position of considerablejeopardy, as was evidenced by the sailbeing occasionally taken off her. It wasnot expected that she would live in. theincreasing 'sea, but, encouraged by the.ap-pearance of the Life-boat, Dundt^^bple'sJournal, No. 1, which had putrpff to theiraid, the .crew made sail, and, with theLife-boat in company, reached the harbourin safety. The crew were in an exhaustedcondition, and were very thankful to theLife-boat men for so promptly going outto help them.

The Life-boat was again afloat onservice on the 1st October. On that daythe ijHjhooner Courier, of Lerwick, whileat anchor in Peterhead Bay, made signalsfor assistance on the gale increasing from,the eastward. A large pilot-boat put off,but the sea was so heavy that she had toreturn to the shore without ^jeing able torender any aid. Thereupon the Life-boatwas launched, and put 4 men on boardthe schooner), which was ultimately broughtsafely into harbour with the loss of partof her sails.

'Again, o>n the 19th November, this valu-able Life-boat did good service when shewas launched during a gale from S.S.W.,to the barque Albion, of Eostock, whichhad gone ashore at Kirkton Head, and washappily the means of rescuing the crew of10 men. The. night was very dark, withheavy seas and rain, and much credit wasdue to the Life-boat men for the admirablemanner in which they performed this ser-vice. The boat was taken afloat at half-past 9 o'clock oil the Sunday night, andsailed down to the wreck; a distance ofabout four milea. After taking off theshipwrecked crew, tlio vessel was left at11*10 P.M., but in consequence of thestrength of the ebb-tide, and the force ofthe wind, it was impossible then to pullthe boat back to Peterhead, and she there-fore lauded the men at the harbour ofBuchan Haven at about 1'40 A.M., after-wards returning to her station on the jdood-tide, about 8 A.M.

CULLERCOATS, NORTHUMBERLAND. Onthe 27th September three fishing cobles,

belonging to Cullercoats, while returningfrom fishing about 9 o'clock in the morn-ing, were unable to cross the bar, owingto the heaviness of the sea. The windwas blowing from the east at the time,and the crew of the Life-boat Palmerston,being apprehensive of an accident, atonce put off in their boat to the assistanceof the cobles, the crews of which, how-ever, reached the shore in safety, one ofthe boats having a very narrow escapefrom being swamped.

BYE AKD WlNCHKLSEA, SUSSEX. — Aheavy southerly gale was experiencedhere on. the 27th September, and thebrigantine Cyrus, while running for RyeHarbour, grounded outside the East Pier,and as the tide rose she filled, and thecrew, fearing the mast would part, tookto the bowsprit.. When their periloussituation was observed, the Arthur Frede-rick Fitzroy Life-boat, stationed at Piye,was launched, and proceeded to theirassistance. On account of the heavinessof the gale, she experienced much diffi-culty in getting alongside the wreck, buthappily she was ultimately enabled tosave the crew of 9 men, who were landedin Eye Harbour. The boat acted verywell, having been nearly all the time inbroken water; and the behaviour of hercrew waa • also highly spoken of. At anearlier period of the day they had goneoff in the Life-boat to the vessel when shefirst stranded; but their proffered aidwas declined at that time, although themaster was glad to signal for the Life-boat later, when his ship was under waterwith a heavy sea breaking over her, andboth boats sunk.

On the 14th December the ship Bobina,bound from Aguilas, in Spain, to Shields,went ashore off Jury's Gap. The EyeLife-boat Arthur Frederick Fitzroy, and theSolicitors' and Proctors' Life-boat StormSprite, stationed at "Wmchelsea, werelaunched to the aid of the shipwreckedmen, a high wind blowing at the time anda heavy sea running. The first-namedboat saved 8 men, and the other Life-boat rescued the remaining 9 men fromthe wreck.

WHITBY.—At dusk on the evening ofthe 2nd October the schooner Dispatch,of this port, was making for the harbour,when the wind suddenly fell, and shedrove over the rocks into the broken

water. The master immediately showeda signal of distress, when the No. 1Life-boat, Robert Wkitworth, was quicklylaunched, and proceeded to the schooner;aiid after the Life-boat men had suc-ceeded in getting her anchor and towingher into a safe position, the master andcrew of 2 men left her, she being in aleaky state at the time, and they weresafely landed in the Life-boat through aheavy sea. The next morning the ves-sel was still riding at her anchor, andas there seemed some hope of saving herthe wind being fair, although the sea wasvery heavy, the Life-boat placed the mas-ter and crew again on board, and, withassistance, the schooner was taken on toHartlepool.

On the 6th December a strong galeof wind, accompanied by a heavy sea,came on suddenly, and six of the fishing-

l cobles belonging to the port, each con-taining 3 men, were overtaken by thestorm. On their perilous pgpition beingobserved, the No. 1 Life-boat, the RobertWhitworth, and the No. 2 Life-boat, werelaunched. The first-named boat saved12 men, forming the crews of four cobles,the remaining 6 men being rescued bythe other Life-boat. The six cobles wereafterwards washed on to the beach in avery damaged state, most of their gearand all their fish being lost.

HUNSTANTON, NoBFOLK.—The schoonerMajor, of Lynn, ran aground at Holme onthe morning of the 30th September. ^TheLife-boat, Licensed Victualler, was at oncedespatched to the distressed vessel, andwas, fortunately, the means of rescuingthe crew, consisting of 3 men and a boy.The Life-boat behaved admirably in thisservice, and was excellently managed.This valuable boat was presented to theLife-boat Society about five years ago byLicensed Victuallers, and she has sincethat period rescued 36 persons from dif-ferent shipwrecks.

SKEGNESS, LINCOLNSHIRE.—On the sameday, during a very strong N.E. gale, witha heavy sea, the Skegness Life-boat, Her-bert Ingram, rendered valuable service todistressed vessels and their crews. In thefirst instance a flag of distress was seenfrom a passing brig, called the Regina, ofLondon; the Life-boat put off and followedher, and eventually succeeded in rescuingthe crew, 7 in number. Just on the arrival

of the boat on shore, several large ships,with their sails a good deal tattered,were seen approaching, and two of themstruck on the Knock Sand. The boatagain proceeded out, and, after a strongeffort, succeeded in reaching the two ves-sels. The crew of one, the James, ofLondon, refused to leave her, but 7 menof the brig Orb, of Whitby, were broughton shore. Later in the day the crew ofthe James were seen to take to their boat,and were lost sight of for a time, the seabeing very rough. The Life-boat wasagain launched, but the crew of the briglanded in Wainfleet Haven in their ownboat, and the Life-boat crew, seeing themsafe, followed the brig Orb, which hadthen floated off, boarded her, and tookher up Boston Deeps. The James after-wards became a total wreck on the Knock.The Life-boat behaved admirably whileperforming these services, and much praisewas due to the crew, for it was very rough,and they were out altogether for nearlytwenty-four hours, in which time theywere thus instrumental in saving 14lives.

SCABBOEOUGH.— On the 2nd Octoberthe Life-boat Mary, on this station, wastaken off by a volunteer crew to assistfour fishing-cobles, which, while makingfor the harbour, were in much danger onaccount of the very heavy sea runninground the pier-head. They were all es-corted in by the Life-boat in safety. Onecoble that had previously come in hadshipped a very heavy sea, and was nearlylost. The Life-boat remained off readyto render assistance to a Penzance boatthat was drifting fast towards the shore,but the wind freshened, and she was ableto beat off.

CADGWITH, COBNWALL.—The PilchardSeine belonging to this Cove being en-dangered on the 10th October from wantof proper mooring, and the weather beingtoo rough for launching any ordinaryboat, the Life-boat Western CommercialTraveller, was lent to its crew to enablethem to take out an extra grapnel to thenet, which principally belonged to them,and which contained a large quantity offish. The Life-boat behaved very wellin the heavy ground seas she had to en-counter.

LY.THAM, LANCASHIEE.—The schoonerVenus, of Preston, whilst entering the

port on the 20th October, late on thetide, during a strong westerly wind, struckon the Horse Bank, on which a good dealof sea was then running. The Life-boatWakefield was then taken out to the ves-sel, and, at the request of the crew of theschooner, remained alongside until theygot out of their perilous position.

On the 9th November the French brigJeune Colombe, bound from St. Malo toPreston, went ashore on the Horse Bank,during a N.W. gale with a heavy groundswell. The Lytham Life-boat promptlywent to the assistance of the master andcrew; but they could not be got to un-derstand the perilous position in whichthey were placed, and ultimately the Life-boat had to return to the shore with only 2of the crew of the brig. The Life-boat menwere, however, very loth to leave the rest ofthe crew to p«rish, and they therefore againproceeded out, and the 5 men left on boardthe vessel were then only too glad to comeinto the boat, which brought them safelyto shore.

Three days afterwards the same Life-boat was also the means of rescuing thecrew of 4 men from the schooner Jubilee,of Preston, which, during foggy weather,stranded on the north end of the HorseBank. When the crew were broughtashore by the Life-boat a heavy ground-swell was breaking on the sandbank, butin the evening the sea went down, and thevessel having held together, the mastersecured the services of the Life-boat andsome fishing-boats, and after transferringa portion of the cargo to the latter, theschooner floated off, and was afterwardstaken into harbour.

Mr. LEWIS, the Secretary, reported that he had,during the months of August and September,visited some of the Life-boat Stations on thecoasts of Devon and Cornwall. He found themin excellent order, and the crews continued toexpress the utmost confidence in their boats.

Reported the transmission to their stations ofthe new Life-boats for Scarborough and Rhos-neigir, demonstrations having taken place at bothstations on the occasion of the inauguration ofthe Life-boats.

distressed vessels; but ultimately the services ofthe Life-boats were not required. The expensesthus incurred amounted to 47?. 15«. Sd.

Reported the services of the Newbiggin Life-boat,in putting off, during a very heavy gale from theS.W., on the 28th Sept., and bringing ashore fromthe schooner Perseverance, bound from Sunderlandto Leith, a man whose skull had been fracturedby a blow received from the handle of the wind-lass, and who proved to be dead when theyreached the land. The Life-boat afterwards put«ff and succeeded in taking the vessel safely intoShields.

Voted the thanks of the Institution, inscribedon vellum, to Mr. ROBERT HUGHES, the HonorarySecretary of its Rhyl Branch; and the thanks ofthe Society and II. to a lad named EDWARD JONES,for rescuing from the water, and afterwards re-suscitating, a gentleman named LINDSAY HALL,who was in imminent danger of being drownedwhile bathing at Rhyl, on the 2nd July.

of the Vote inscribed on vellum, and 51. each toMr. CHABIES BI.AMPIED, farmer,Mr. EJUASWHIT-LET, farmer, and JOHN BOUCHARD, labourer, of St.Martin's, Jersey, in acknowledgment of their gal-lant and determined services in putting off twicein a sma/! boat during a heavy gale from ihe west-ward, and proceeding a long distance to the shipIsabella jfforthcote, of Christiania, which had goneon the Ecrehos Rocks off the Jersey coast, on the2nd Nov. The three brave men were enabled inthe two trips, under the most perilous circum-stances, to save the whole of the crew, 18 innumber. The shipwrecked men were landed on arock, where they were carefully tended in a hutby a poor man named CHARLES PIXEL and hiswife, who were most generous and hospitable tothem. A reward of 51. was voted by the Institu-tion to the Pnrets for those kind services.

Also 51. to the crew of the lugger Champion, ofRamsgate, for saving, in their small boat, 7 menfrom the brig Ariel, of Shoreham, which had beenwrecked on the Goodwin Sands during a strongW.S.'W. breeze, on the 2nd Nov.

Also 51. to four men for rescuing, in the galleypunt Leader, 1 man from the barque Hiawatha,which was wrecked on the Goodwin Sands while itwas blowing a gale from the N .E.,on the\3th Kov.

The Preservation of Life to which the Institution has devoted itself for nearlyhalf a century, has been considered in all ages as an act deserving of every meed ofgratitude and encouragement. The highest and humblest are often made widowsand orphans by the violence of the storm, as was too frequently seen during thefearful gales of last December. To-day it is the great captain in Ms proud war-ship, who goes, down with five hundred men into the ocean's bosom. To-morrowit is the poor woman, with her children round her—who, oa the desolate beach,mourns for the manly heart that will return no more—for the night has beenstormy—and the fishermen have all been " drowned."

THE CoHHrmra or MANAGEMENT have to state that during the past year (1872) the ROYAL NATIONAL LITE-BOAT IHBTITUTIOI? expended£16,984 on various Life-boat Establishments on the Coasts of England, Scotland, and Ireland, in addition to having contributed to the savingof 739 persons from various Shipwrecks on our Coasts, for which services it granted 19 Silver Medals and Totes of Thanks on Vellum, andpecuniary rewards to the amount of £2,637-

The number of Lives saved either by the Life-boats of the Society, or by special exertions, for which it has granted Bewardo, since itsformation, is 21,486; for which Services 91 Gold Medals, 836 Silver Medals, and £39,100 in cash have been paid in Rewards.

The expense of a Life-boat, Its equipment, transporting-carriage, and boat-honse, averages £700, in addition to £70 a-year needed tokeep the establishment in a state of efficiency.
