Money from sales tax goes to the local government to pay for services. Property tax is what citizens pay if they own a home. The president is the head of the executive branch. He or She is elected by the citizens of the united states every four years. He or She can then choose people to help run the states. State and local governments work together to run schools, police departments, libraries, and parks State governments are divided into 3 different branches just like the national government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Slide 15 State Branches Executive: The governor is the leader of each state government.
