The Lehigh MIRACALUBE® Air Cylinder…the only “real” self-lube air cylinder in the world. The true test of a cylinder is how well it performs in your application. This has been the Lehigh philosophy since 1948 when we first designed and manufactured the exclusive MIRACALUBE® self-lubricated air cylinder system. This combination of innovative design features plus the finest available materials and workmanship has earned Lehigh an industry-wide reputation of excellence. The unique MIRACALUBE® internal reservoir system meters a specially formulated non-toxic, ingestible, low-vapor pressure lubricant, totally solvent-free for millions of trouble free cycles. Unlike contaminating air line lubricants, Lehigh MIRACALUBE® will not mist or atomize and being solvent-free will not dissolve seals or fuse lipseals to the tube ID if the piston remains in one position for any extended time. Other standard Lehigh high-performance features include a tough, no-rust/non-pitting cartridge brass cylinder tube for extended piston seal life and a long self-lubricated, readily removable sintered bronze rod bearing with grooved design for doubled oil capacity. You’ll benefit in your profit column with MIRACALUBE® cylinders’ longer life, less downtime, no air line lubrication and smooth, low breakaway startups for increased productivity. For “real” self-lube, oil-free air come to Lehigh, your total

hydraulic/pneumatic cylinder source…our customer representatives and engineers are ready to help you with your specific fluid power applications. Write or call toll-free 800/257-9515 for complete details.

REAL SELF-LUBRICATION…THE MIRACALUBE®SERIES HEAVY-DUTY CYLINDERS

1. Lehigh designed the exclusive MIRACALUBE® self-lubricated air cylinder over35 years ago…and it’s still the only “real” self-lubed air cylinder in the world. A unique internal reservoir system meters through multiple wicks a specially formulated lubricant for millions of cycles of low breakaway, trouble-free cycles. Readily removable, self lubed bronze rod bearing offers a grooved design for doubled oil capacity. Abrasive dry start-ups are eliminated.

2. Precision finished cartridge brass tubing is used for the cylinder instead of materials like chrome plated steel or aluminum. The brass tubing

provides freedom from corrosion and abrasion, thus extending seal life.

3. Sintered bronze rod bearing impregnated with oil continuously lubricates the chrome plated piston rod. A grooved design provides a double oil capacity for extreme duty applications.

4. Internally lubricated carboxylated nitrile rod and piston seals provide low friction and faster breakaway, and clean wiper action extends seal life.

5. Threaded bearing cartridge is readily removable without special tools.

6. Lehigh’s self-lubrication system is totally enclosed. No air line lubrication is required.

7. Flexible cushion seals insure positive cushion response, and encourage fast breakaway.

8. Instant start-ups and smooth, even piston strokes extend cylinder life.

9. Case histories in excess of 50 million linear feet of piston travel in conventional dry air or oil-free compressed air applications have been experienced.

10. High tensile steel tie rods to minimize tie rod stretch with rolled threads in ¼” thru ¾” diameter tie rods.

11. Full pneumatic service up to 250 psi for the operating temperature range of 0 to 165 degrees F. Other seal compounds are available for higher or lower temperatures.

Custom Cylinders The contents of this catalog illustrate standard items. These standard products can be modified extensively to meet your requirements. Modifications can include materials, electric limit switches, tandem, multi-position, non-rotational rods, and hydraulic controlled variations. A factory consultant is available to discuss these with you. For high pressure hydraulic cylinders to 5000 psi see Lehigh Catalog 8308.

ENGINEERING STANDARDS OTHERS ARE MEASURED BY… LEHIGH PRESSURE-RATED HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS

1. Special sintered bronze rod bearing for extra long rod bearing life. Replaceable front gland assembly contains rod bearing, seal, and rod wiper. The threaded gland is readily removable with a conventional open-end wrench without further cylinder disassembly.

2. Leak-proof cylinder head uses extrusion resistant polyurethane o-ring seal. 3. Piston seals are polyurethane lip seals. 4. One-piece steel piston. 5. Full flow port design. 6. Recessed cushion adjusting screw with captive retainer for safety. 7. Superior polyurethane rod scraper wipes rod clean to reduce damage to the rod and bearing. 8. Solid steel heads and mounting plates, machined from precision steel components. 9. Precision finished brass cylinder tube. 10. Ground, polished, and chrome-plated rods provide longer seal life and smoother operation. 11. High tensile steel tie rods to minimize tie rod stretch with rolled threads in ¼” thru ¾” diameter tie rods. 12. Self-aligning oil cushions with integral check valves to facilitate fast piston breakaway. 13. Rolled thread rod stud for greater strength of male rod ends, 5/8” thru 1-3/8” diameter rods. 14. Standard seals for the operating temperature range of 0 to 165 degrees F. Other seal compounds are available for special fluids,

and higher or lower temperatures.

DESCRIPTION: The Lehigh Positioning Cylinder is an air cylinder directly coupled to a force-balance, servo type positioner. This combination provides a means of controlling the stroke of the piston rod to any desired length up to full stroke. The stroke control is by a remote pressure transmitter, is repeatable, and is infinitely variable. FEATURES: The air cylinder features Lehigh self-lubrication with a built-in oil reservoir which feeds the cylinder wall as required. The cylinder is rated for dry air service and will give quick start-up regardless of the amount of activity. It operates on pneumatic service from 25-150 psi and seal temperatures to 165 degrees F. It is supplied to NFPA Dimensional Standards. APPLICATIONS:

• Modulated valves • Control damper and louver openings • Regulate gates, shutters, and doors • Lift loads to exact position • Position slides on automated equipment

The Lehigh Positioning Cylinder provides a precise method for creating and controlling forces located at some distance from the output device, by a plant operator or process

transmitter. It can develop long power strokes and may be controlled to any point in its travel. OPERATION: The Positioning Cylinder operates on the same principle as the typical valve positioner so widely used in the process industries. A precisely regulated air pressure known as “instrument air”, usually in the range of 3 to 15 psi is piped into the Positioner. The signal transmitter is actually a precision regulator with an adjustable output of 3 to 15 psi. It is a separate unit not part of the Positioning Cylinder. When the Positioning Cylinder receives a change in signal pressure it diverts the supply air to one side or the other of the cylinder piston, thereby responding in stroke length proportionally to the change in signal pressure. The instrument air pressurizes a diaphragm holding the inner end of the long spring. When the instrument air pressure changes, the diaphragm moves slightly, thus changing the flow through a small internal nozzle. This change causes an internal pilot valve to shift, thus introducing supply air to one side or the other of the main cylinder piston. The differential pressure moves the piston rod which extends the spring, pulling the diaphragm back into its neutral position. The unbalance of the valve is nullified, the supply air is equalized on both sides of the piston and the system comes to rest. This is a recognized, force-balance principle.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Supply with clean air free of oil and moisture not exceeding 150 psi. The Lehigh series of self-lubricated cylinders serves particularly well in this application.

2) Specify whether piston rod is to extend or retract

as transmitter pressure is increased.

3) Cylinder assembly to be Lehigh Heavy Duty, self lubricated. For full description, mounting and

dimensions see Lehigh JHD series. For Positioner assembly dimensions see data below.

4) Cylinder bore sizes from 2” to 8”. Strokes to 18”

or more. Because of the balancing-of-pressure system, bore sizes should be chosen well above theoretical rating.

5) Positioner assembly is a commercial unit adapted

by Lehigh to this application. Usual input range is 3 to 15 psi but other instrument ranges are available. Pressure gauges are used for set up and adjustment against transmitter used.

SERIES JHDA HEAVY DUTY LINEAR

MOTION AIR MOTORS

SELF-LUBRICATED, DOUBLE ACTION LINEAR AIR MOTOR ENGINEERED TO PROVIDE TROUBLE-FREE PERFORMANCE THROUGH MILLIONS OF CYCLES

• FASTER RESPONSE…Combination Cylinder and Valve

provide faster response and quicker operation than can be achieved with units piped to a remotely located valve.

• REDUCED AIR CONSUMPTION…Piping air to distant location to activate valve is eliminated.

• LONG LIFE… Extra years of service and millions of maintenance-free cycles, even with air which is improperly filtered and dirty.

• CHOICE OF POWER…Designed for either electrical or pneumatic operation with maintained or momentary contact.

The Lehigh Series JHDA Heavy Duty Air Motor combines a heavy duty cylinder with Lehigh’s 4-Way Slide Valve to create a linear motion, quick response power package. It is available from 1 ½” to 8” bore. The combination unit is easily installed and reduces power and maintenance costs.

CONSTRUCTION FEATURES CYLINDER The design of the Lehigh Cylinder provides internal, multi-wick self-lubrication for the cylinder wall and bearings, and ribbed seals that protect the surrounding areas from pollution. Materials used in the construction of the cylinder were selected to assure several times the service life normally expected with air motors of this type VALVE The Lehigh 4-Way Slide Valve incorporated in the unit is an air-driven directional control valve which performs reliably even with poorly filtered air as a result of two important construction features: 1. An oversized, air-driven stainless steel piston is capable of

operation in dirty or wet industrial environments. 2. The valve seat is self-cleaning. This is accomplished by

mating a lapped manganese-bronze slide into a nickel-plated ductile iron base.

CUSHIONS Cushions can be supplied on all bore sizes. However, rod end cushions will be fixed type on 1 ½” bore with 1” rod; 2” bore with 1 3/8” rod; and 2 ½” bore with 1 ¾” rod

25

SERIES JHDA AUTOMATIC AIR MOTORS

AUTOMATIC AIR MOTORS Lehigh Automatic Air Motors use built-in poppets to provide the signal for automatic operation. External limit valves, micro switches, and push rods are eliminated. Mounted internally in the head, poppets bleed off the signal side of the control valve when the piston depresses the poppet stem at the end of the stroke. The system is safe, reliable, and positive. It provides a very simple and low cost method of achieving automatic operation. The Automatic Air Motor cannot be supplied in the 1 ½” bore size. It is limited to a maximum rod of 5/8” diameter on the 2” bore size, and a maximum of rod of 1” diameter on the 2 ½” bore size. There is no rod diameter limitation on larger bore sizes. AUTOMATIC RETURN Automatic return air motors have the built-in poppet in one head to automatically reverse the stroke from the normally retracted or normally extended position. The start cycle may be controlled by bleed or electrical signals. AUTOMATIC RECIPROCATING Automatic reciprocating air motors have the built-in poppets in both heads and will maintain a reciprocating action as long as the air supply is provided. A start-stop selector valve may be installed in either pilot line to assure that the stroke will terminate at one extreme or the other. NOTES:

SERIES 2MA 4-WAY SLIDE VALVES

DIRECTIONAL CONTROL VALVES FOR OPERATION OF AIR CYLINDERS, AIR MOTORS, AND OTHER AIR-POWERED DEVICES

• Fast Acting…Up to 1500 cycles per minute. • Reliable…Operates even with improperly filtered air. • Long Life…Metal-to-metal seat is self-cleaning and

operates for millions of cycles without significant wear.

• Compact…Short piston permits short valve length.

HOW IT OPERATES The piston is air driven to move the slide. In each of its two positions, the slide opens one exhaust and one pressure port. The rate of flow of exhaust air is controlled by adjustable speed controls mounted in each of the two exhaust orifices. Both these orifices lead to a single exhaust port. The oversized actuating piston assures positive breakaway action, regardless of dirt in the operating areas or of low operating pressures. The slide effectively wipes the seat clean on each cycle, assuring a satisfactory seal even when used with improperly filtered air.

CONTROL METHODS MOMENTARY BLEED PILOTS The balanced piston is actuated by momentary unbalancing caused by the air exhausting from the opposite signal port. The exhausting of air is achieved by double integrally mounted two-way solenoid valves (Valve Model 2MA61E), or by externally located two-way pilot valves (Valve Model 2MA57) which can be operated mechanically, pneumatically, or electrically. MAINTAINED PRESSURE PILOTS Positive maintained pilot pressure is utilized to move the piston and slide. The pilot air can be controlled by manually, electrically, or pneumatically operated three-way valves (Valve Model 2MA83) which are externally mounted Integrally mounted double solenoids (Valve Model 2MA86) may also be installed to perform this function. AIR RETURN The piston can be supplied with one end having a smaller diameter in order to create differential force when both sides are subjected to the

same pressure. When pressurized through a three-way integrally mounted solenoid (Valve Model 2MA78) or externally mounted pilot valves (Valve Model 2MA89), the larger end will overpower the smaller end, causing movement toward the smaller end. When air in the larger diameter end is exhausted, line pressure acting on the smaller end activates the return. Construction:

• Piston…Corrosion resistant anodized aluminum on all valves except 316 stainless steel on valve model 2MA57 and 2MA61E double bleed valves

• Slide…Lapped manganese bronze. • Valve Base…Lapped nickel-plated ductile iron. • Valve Body…Anodized heat treated alumin

DETERMINING PROPER PISTON ROD DIAMETER

To determine proper Piston Rod Diameter for you specific application, follow the sequence outlined below: STEP 1) Determine the maximum extension thrust (push) in pounds that your selected bore cylinder will develop. STEP 2) Using the drawings above, locate your mounting category, noting the value of “L” in relation to the extended cylinder dimension “D”. STEP 3) Prior to determining final “D” dimension in inches, check to see if cylinder stop tube is necessary for proper cylinder operation. As a general rule, whenever the “D” dimension exceeds 40”, use 1” of stop tube length for each additional 10” of “D” dimension. Example: If “D” dimension is 54”, the stop tube length should be 2”. STEP 4) Determine the final value of “D” in inches, including stop tube addition if applicable. Convert “D” dimension to chart value “L” in inches, using formula shown on applicable drawing. STEP 5) In the Selection Chart at right, locate line showing the maximum Thrust in Pounds and read to the right until the approximate value of “L” is located. Read vertically upward to find the necessary rod diameter in inches. Example: If the maximum thrust is 5,000 lbs., and value of “L” has been determined as 110”, the minimum rod diameter recommended would be 2”. STEP 6) Note that in some cases the recommended minimum rod diameter may exceed that possible for the cylinder bore size selected. In such cases it may be necessary to select a larger bore cylinder operating at a lower pressure which will still provide the required operation thrust. The larger cylinder may accommodate a larger rod size which will meet the minimum requirement.
