The Legend of the Winged Magician: Opening Scene

Synopsis

Violet, exhausted from having traveled for so long, is relieved at the sight of a city in which she can hide and rest.

Once inside the city, Violet is horrified at the sight of vampires, werewolves, and sirens. However, since she is too weary to simply look for other civilization, she tries to look for overnight lodging.

Not only does Violet physically struggle with continuing forward, but her anxiety towards interacting with such strange beings also makes her hesitant to ask for help.

Violet finally finds an inn on her own and musters the last of her strength to get to it.

Shooting the Scene

A series of illustrations will serve as visuals for the script and be arranged on iMovie according to the progression of the story

I will use my iPhone to photograph the illustrations and upload them to my laptop

Visual Style of the Scene

The visuals will be black-and-white illustrations of the characters and setting

The aesthetic will mimic that of a graphic novel, with each manga-inspired illustration being a comic panel with speech bubbles

The background, props, and character designs are modeled after 1930s-1940s urban environments

“Motion comics can be considered as an emerging form of digital animation that typically appropriates and remediates an existing comic book narrative and artwork into a screen-based animated narrative.” (Smith, 2012)

Editing Style

The illustrations will be uploaded to my laptop and edited in iMovie

They will be arranged chronologically according to the script

Single images will be uploaded more than once from different angles to simulate tracking shots, close-ups, and long shots

The close-ups and tracking shots represent Violet’s visual perspective as she becomes more aware of her surroundings

Shots will hold on the introduction of each species to emphasize their foreignness

These images will be still rather than animated, so only cuts will signify a transition between them

Call Sheet

As the sole contributor to the project, I will do the drawing, filming, and voice acting myself

Illustrations will begin on September 15 and filming will occur on September 17

Materials needed: sketchbook, pencils, pens, iPhone camera, iMovie

Drawing and filming will take place from 10am-4pm each day
