From The Best American Short Stories of the Century , Edited by John Updike, Katrina Kenison, Coeditor Houghton Mifflin Co., 1999 Lawrence Sargent Hall (1915-1993) graduated from Bowdoin College in 1936 and received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1941. “The Ledge” won the O. Henry Memorial Award in 1960, and Stowaway, Hall’s first novel, won the William Faulkner Award in 1961. In addition to fiction, Hall published several books of criticism.
