TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 16 2014 NETBALL 15 V1 - CAVE01Z01MA Parai credits Federal for hard-fought game A dominant centre court paved the way for Rovers Scope to win a fifth consecu- tive Club Eastside Alice Springs Netball Association A- grade premiership on Saturday. Lauren Parai, who won the Best on Court trophy, was a driving force as Michelle Ellis took full advantage of her op- portunities to shoot Rovers to a 46-38 victory. “Anyone on my team could have won this,” she said of the award presented after the game. “The game was a good con- test, pretty physical and went fast – how I expected it would be. “Crystal (Dixon, Parai’s di- rect opponent as the Federal centre) is a competitive and physical player – but I like that as it makes me try harder. “Netball is not my main sport, but I like playing and the girls so I will be back next year. “Murph (coach Leanne Southam) has taught me how to play the game.’’ Rovers dominated from the opening as Carlie McInnes caused three turnovers in the Federal attacking circle to set the team up to score three goals before Federal had a shot at the five-minute mark. The game looked as if it was going to be over before it really began at Rovers raced out to 8-2 lead, with Ellis sinking a perfect seven goals from seven shots, before Gabi Borchers sunk the final two baskets of the term to give Federal hope. Federal lifted in the second term and with better ball to Dody Stephens, coupled with some indifferent shooting from Ellis (who had four of her six misses for the game in the second term) and Aimee Rodda, took the lead 12 min- utes into the term. Rovers’ hearts were in their mouths when Rodda went down and needed courtside treatment from the buffeting she was taking on court. But she continued and Rov- ers scored four of the next six goals to take a slender lead 16-15 into the half time break. Then Rovers exploded in the third quarter scoring 16 goals at almost 90 per cent to all but have their hands on a fifth consecutive premiership. Rodda joined Ellis in the goal scoring as Parai and Shannan King kept feeding the ball in with such skill that there was little Team of Year defend- ers Thlia Lee and Katelyn Henwood, despite being among Federal’s best players for the game, could do to stop the flow of goals. Rovers defence from the centre court to the circle made life difficult for Federal and then they created more oppor- tunities so the team finished having 14 more shots to net their winning score. Rodda sunk the shot of the day from the edge of the attack circle but time was called while it was in the air so it did not count – but that did not stop the celebration which began for the goal and then contin- ued as the players swamped their captain in victory. “I have dreamt of that shot for the 12 years I have played A-grade,” Rodda said. “It was hard game, Feds kept competing right to the final whistle. We knew it would be tough. “A grand final is completely different ball game to any other game in the season. “Our plan was to run them into the ground and I am proud that we did. “Our fitness showed and for this we love and hate Budgie (Philip Preece) who has worked us so hard but this makes it all worthwhile.” Rovers also won the A-re- serve and the B-grade premier- ships with T-Rex and ROTs respectively. It was a first title for T- Rex with 12 goals to six in the second term to establish a winning lead at half-time, while the seemingly ageless ROTs scored 21-11 in the sec- ond half to return to premier- ship holder after being defeated in the 2013 by a sister/ daughter team. Giants B2-grade overcame a slow start and five and three- goal deficits at quarter and half time to defeat Federal Light- ning 32-30. Federal Angels dominated their C-grade clash with Rov- ers Rups from the start, with best of court Carly Noble scar- ing up 37 goals in the 42-23 win while a dominant second term by Neata Glass Giants Dre- maers put them on the path to defeat sister side Neata Glass Giants Jazz Hands.
