about proven, research-based learning disability instruction.

Opportunities Fair

Monday, October 6, 2014 6:00 to 8:00 PM

Free informational sessions from 4:00 to 8:00 PM

Geared exclusively toward students who have learning disabilities or attention disorders, this is the only college fair of its kind in Minnesota and the five-state area. Representatives from over 50 schools and organizations will be in attendance. Throughout the evening, there will be small group information sessions available that cover the college experience and the college search process, specifically with regard to special learning and attention needs.

There is no charge to attend the Groves College Fair or informational sessions. No registration is required.

Information Session DescriptionsDisability Resources in Higher Education: Be PreparedLocation: TheaterKimberly Schumann, M.S., Director of Enhancement Program – Disability Services, University of St. ThomasIn order to maximize their educational experience, students with disabilities need to understand their options for disability resources when enrolled in college. Students will be better able to advocate for themselves in the higher education setting by learning about the process prior to starting their first semester in college. This session will include an overview of college preparation tips, high school to college transition topics, university and student responsibilities, documentation, and accommodations.

Technology to Help With the Executive Function Skills of Organization and Time ManagementLocation: Media CenterTodd Hanson, Groves Academy Director of TechnologyExecutive function skills include the ability to manage time and attention, plan and organize thoughts and materials, remember details and multi-step problems, and initiate and complete tasks. Attendees will learn about several tools and strategies that can help students be more organized, including software, apps for mobile devices, and websites.

ACT and SAT Test Prep: What You Need to KnowLocation: Room 210Ron Michalak, M.B.A., Founder, Breakaway Test Prep and Consultant to Groves AcademyTaking the ACT or the SAT can be a stressful exercise for any student. For students with a learning disability or ADHD, the experience can take on an entirely different perspective. In this session, learn about the ACT and the SAT, how they are structured and what the key differences are between the exams. Find out how the Twin Cities’ first test prep program for students with a learning disability can help improve a confidence, performance and success on test day.

Transitioning to College with ADHD: The Crucial First YearLocation: Conference RoomZachary Eakman, Psy.D., Groves Academy Assistant Director of DiagnosticsThe first year is critical to a student’s success in college, but there are steps families can take to help students prepare for this transition. This session will cover strategies for success for students with ADHD, including tips for creating your class schedule, working with your academic advisor and disability support services, as well as accommodations to help facilitate a seamless transition and lessen the demands placed on students in the college setting. Increase your likelihood of success with these tips and tools.

Choosing the right college is a life-changing decision.Explore post-secondary options at Minnesota’s only college fair

exclusively for students who have learning disabilities or attention disorders.

The Right OrganizationsOnly educational institutions and professional services with special education programs are invited to exhibit. This includes public and private colleges and universities, community and technical colleges, vocational and trade schools, special education professionals, tutors, learning specialists and counselors. This event is designed to support students who have learning disabilities or attention disorders. In past years, the event has drawn exhibitors from 24 states. We expect to have 50+ exhibitors this year.The Right RepresentativesAdmissions and special services representatives from each school are trained, knowledgeable and able to articulate the programs, services, accommodations and procedures for LD/ADHD students.The Right EnvironmentUnlike other college fairs, the Groves College Fair provides the opportunity to speak directly to representatives from schools that have programs and services for learning disabled students. This reduces search times and makes it easier to compare and contrast schools. This college fair is exclusively for students who have learning disabilities or attention disorders. Students from any high school, as well as parents, family members, teachers, counselors and administrators are welcome to attend.The Right PriceThere is no charge to attend the college fair. It is the only event of its kind in Minnesota and the five-state area. Everyone who attends will receive a complimentary Post-Secondary Planning Guide. This valuable resource contains information about colleges and education resources, as well as essential information to help students who have learning disabilities or attention disorders prepare for life after graduation.

Now what?Location: Room 210Lynn Gallagher, Ed.D., Loras College Director of Disability ServicesThis session will focus on strategies students and their families can use to prepare for the transition from high school to college. Self-advocacy is key to success for students with disabilities. We will discuss various skills students can learn at different stages in the transition process. Time will be devoted to the differences between special programs at the college level vs. support services and accommodations.

Need Support Services for Learning Disabilities at College?Location: Room 217Lee Baker, Academic Transitions Coach, Lee Baker ConsultingKate Malczewski, MBA, Independent Educational Consultant, College ConnectorsAttendees will gain important information about college disability services: how to find them, how to assess the scope of services, and what questions to ask to understand the policies, procedures, and other “fine print” relating to college disability services.

Reading: Assistive Technology Tools and StrategiesLocation: Media CenterTodd Hanson, Groves Academy Director of TechnologyMany students struggle with the components of reading, including sounding out words, reading at a fast pace or understanding content. This session will present tools and strategies students can use to enhance fluency, staying focused on the content, and taking notes on what was read. This presentation will cover tools and strategies for all students as well as resources for students with a reading disorder such as dyslexia.

Diagnostic Assessments: Planning Ahead for Post-Secondary SuccessLocation: Conference RoomRay Boyd, Director of Diagnostic Services, Groves AcademyBefore students begin the college admissions process, it’s a good idea for them to have a full understanding of their unique strengths and challenges. Learn about the different kinds of educational tests and assessments that help with self-awareness, as well as tests that some colleges require students to have taken in order to qualify for accommodations or admission. Find out what all these scores, reports and results measure, and learn how they can be useful in educational planning.

Meeting the Need: 13th Year / Gap Year DefinedLocation: Room 217Josh Tierney, Groves Academy Post-Secondary SupportOnce largely seen as remedial training grounds for athletes trying to boost their SAT scores, “13th-year,’’ or “post-secondary,’’ programs are catching on. Learn more about these programs and find out who would most benefit from an extra year of school prior to entering college.

I’m Ready for College, but Can’t Find My Backpack: Executive Function Strategies for Young AdultsLocation: TheaterEllen Engstrom, M.A., Groves Academy Director of Education, Curriculum and InstructionAre you a college-bound student experiencing difficulties with time management and organization? Do you have problems attending class regularly, regulating sleep, keeping track of materials and schedules, and meeting deadlines? This session will identify specific challenges you may face in college and explore the underlying causes of executive function difficulties. Practical strategies for managing executive function weaknesses will be covered.

Helping LD/ADHD Students Through the College Selection ProcessLocation: Room 210Julia Frost, Director of the Jones Learning Center, University of the OzarksSome students with learning disabilities have struggled so hard to get through high school that they can’t imagine that attending college would even be a possibility. These students and their families need to consider not only what college they can be admitted to, but more importantly which college has the support program that will provide what they need to graduate. This session will focus on which students should be encouraged to apply to college, the various types of support programs that are available to students with disabilities, and what personal student characteristics should be considered in order to make the best choice among support programs.

Assistive Technology to Support StudyingLocation: Media CenterTodd Hanson, Groves Academy Director of TechnologyStudents with learning disabilities often have trouble with study skills. Assistive technology can help students take notes, collect research, and organize information to aid in studying. This session will cover apps, software and websites that can help college students study efficiently.
