Hey it’s what we do. At least I was on your side.

Yeah and it cost me ten thousand dollars

Cheap at half the price.David would never write a book. Worn out and inconsolable after losing his mom along

with everything else he’d be forever healing if ever. Nah he’d never wirte a book.

But I could.And I did.

It was the best of willsIt was the worst of wills.

Thanks to the damn lawyers

Don’t ask who don’t ask why

Have another slice of liar pie.

My first significant human etc etc

Lawyers have two things on their side. Time and money. Do you? Of course not. So whywould you sue them. They are the ultimate psychic drain.

A look at the facts.

What david lost.

His mother.His home.

His family

His self esteem

A lot of his health. WhyBecause a lawyer tricked one person into believing a lie.

As you read the story think how things might have been had not his mother been tricked

the way she was. What could have been taken care of in one short meeting wound up involving 11 lawyers,

countless days and more than one hundred dollars of wasted money.

Fighting can cost your emotional health, physical health and your sanity. I watche my sighuman lose his. Don’t let it happen to you.

If revenge is best served cold … consider this frozen.

The parasite class

Research

Fifty percent of the population is hitting fifty. Someone turns fifty every minute. Themedian age of retirees is now 61. That’s a lot of retirees and most think they will have the

means to retire in peace and quiet. Hold on a minute. This means a pot of money so large

as to be incomprehensible is sitting there to look after an aging population, or is it.Human nature being what it is do you really believe that much money will go unnoticed

or untouched. Of course not. Never has never will. Yes there is a new class lining up at

the side of your retirement road and they are busy and have been for years greasing the

skids so that they get a piece of the action their slice as it were long before you do.I call them the parasite class of whom it can best be said

“Never have so many felt entitled to so much for doing so little.” Im’ sorry to paraphrase

such a great man as winston churchill but there you have it. The parasite class. It’s made

up of financial services professionals led by the worst of the lot, lawyers.

It’s 2005 and arnold szarchnenegger is governor of california. In 2008 there is talk hemay run for president. No way you say. Way I say. Those with vested interests who see

self-interest will just change the rules. What does this have to do with your retirement,

your inheritance. Simple. When someone has power over you then they own the school

and they can change the rules anytime they want. They write the books you get tjo read. There is a vast army of parasites namely lawyers who have no right to be in the game but

legally they are and there’s not much you can do about it now except to inform yourself

as best you can.The reason they can do this that they can enron you is that you refuse to deal with the d

word. Yes death. There you have it. Out loud. Deal with it. Once you do then you’l l be

begin to protect yourself and your loved ones/ information is king and I’ts all out there. To illustrate my point I am going to tell you a simple story of what happened to one

family and who did what to whom during a nasty settlement of a simple two page will.

What should have taken all of a few hours to settle simply became a drawn out battle todestroy one person too naive and perhaps dumb to play by the rules. It’s up to you now

and you cannot say you didn’t see it coming.

Read em and weep. They’re your cards. Someone will always try to deal you a bad hand.

You can count on it.Do something first or read em and weep. Woof.

Mea culpaws.

1. A sudden and violent collapse

Nothing is truer than not making decisions after the loss of a loved one. Yet this is when

you are most vulnerable. Is it any wonder that lawyers jump on this time to takeadvantage of you. It’s not fair but if life were fair coconuts would grow at eye level. This

is not a time for big decisions particularly as regards money. So, if it takes months or

years wait until your mind clears and you can think straight otherwise you will maketerrible mistakes. You’ll find yourself asking a year or two down the line asking yourself

My first significant human was a shy college girl who lived at home with her

folks. She was a bit of a ditz but she looked after me and in the kingdom of dog it

doesn’t get any better than that. She fell in love with me during one of those sappy

“doggy in the window” moment while visiting pet store. Fine with me. I’d have

gone anywhere to get out of the cage I’d been calling home.

I passed my puppyship with flying colors, became house broken in no time and

life was good. Two years later she graduated, landed her first job and moved to her

first apartment in a distant city. Of course they didn’t accept pets so I no longer fit

into the grand scheme of her changed life. Then she did what most kids do. She tried

to foist me onto Mom and Dad but no way, not with retirement looming and a new

Winnebago on back order. The next day I was bundled off to a nondescript storefront

in a run-down strip mall on the south side, over by the Bloomfield projects and home

to the Angels of Mercy Animal adoption center of dubious quality judging by the full

ashtrays and used furniture unfit for a yard sale. amazing how many of these places

there are, the end of the road, like porn is to real movies these places were to a horse

farm. within minutes I was in a small cage (again) with my food dish stuffed by my

side wondering what I'd done to deserve this. But you’ve got to roll with the

punches. One thing I did know, I'd be a lot more careful before trusting any more

humans.

Luckily I wasn't there long. Within hours I was taken from my cage and driven to

Mother's house. Seems her daughter had spotted me sitting on the counter while I

was being registered at the adoption centre and thought I'd be a perfect companion for

her mother. A quick call to confirm and we were on our way but I wasn't so sure. I'd

just been yanked from my first forever home and now I was going to a new one but

what choice did I have. In our world anything beats a cage.

When we got there an old woman was sitting on the front steps of a small well kept

bungalow. Lots of bushes, hidey places, and colorful flowers hanging over the edges

of brightly painted window boxes glowing in the late afternoon sun. The folks from

the agency seemed satisfied with the setup (duh) and after some small talk and

feeding advice handed me over and were merrily on their way no doubt pleased with

whatever commission Mother paid them for my two hours of storage. I sniffed around

Page 10: The Lawyer Who Broke My Legapril2

the house but grew tired and soon fell asleep on the floor of the guest bedroom. I

dreamed of fluffy beds and eating dirt. Woe was me.

Mother was eighty-five years old and sharp as a tack but she wasn’t about to take

me for long walks in the park. That job fell to her daughter by default. For the next

week every time she took me for a walk I’d slip my collar and bolt. She could never

figure that one out. Maybe the thick coat covering my skinny neck kept fooling her.

I didn't know where I was bolting to as long as it was somewhere else, preferably

with a bed I could sleep on. We kept up this urban search and rescue routine for a

few days but she was too fat and slow to catch me so the neighborhood kids decided

to chase me on her behalf. I ran circles and figure eights around them but they

couldn’t get close. I led them down the block, under hedges and through backyards.

Hearing their loud giggles and joyous laughter only made me run faster. Finally I’d

let them catch up and carry me home tummy-side up in that cute way I had where I’d

let my head bounce off their shoulders and try to lick their faces at the same time just

to hear them blurt aaahk jeez as they wiped wet slobber off their chins. I was the

pied piper of drool as I let the kids take me home, past a scowling, clearly

exasperated Daughter dearest. When she I never took to her daughter from the get-

go. (WHY DID I NOT LIKE HER)and She wheezed when she breathed and

stood there with that hands on her hips way she had my day was made every time; but

Mother was fit to be tied. At her age she had no patience with a runaway pooch that

didn't listen or do what it was told

It was early on my sixth day when I heard a car pull into the drive and park by the

rear door of the house. I was sleeping in the den just beside the door when I heard a

key turn in the lock. Looking back I probably knew right away. I pricked up my ears

and stared at the space where the door would soon open. A tall man with tousled

brown hair and a suntanned face walked into the den. He tottered in that way people

do when they've been driving their cars for too long. He smelled gentle and his

warm smile only proved it. He had honey brown eyes like mine and I melted, It

was love at first sniff. Funny how we know these things but I instantly felt safe

again. So much for never trusting humans. He sat down beside me on the sofa as

Page 11: The Lawyer Who Broke My Legapril2

though I'd always been there. I didn't move. I didn't run. He put his big hands over

my head and bony shoulders and pet me as though we'd known each other forever.

"Well aren't you just the most beautiful girl." He said. As Mother tumbled into the

room wiping sleep from her eyes and wearing the old gown with the cooking stains

on it. She was thrilled to see him.

"Oh David I'm so sorry," she began to explain "I should have let you know about the

dog. She's been impossible. She won't go out in the yard with me and runs away

from your sister all the time. I'll have her sent back in the morning if you don’t like

her."

"Not bloody likely." I thought.

"I'm exhausted Mom, let’s talk about this later."

"Ok" said Mother "Stay here tonight and I'll see you in the morning."

"Yeah sure, Goodnight." Said David as he walked to the guest bedroom. He

dropped a blue gym bag on the floor beside the bed and pulled back the top blanket.

He didn't bother to undress. He dropped onto the bed, crept under the covers and fell

asleep. I jumped up beside him and curled up in the small of his back. I'd found my

new significant human and in the kingsom of dog it doesn’t get any better than that.

in the dog world it doesn't get any better than that.

The two of us became inseparable. His capacity to love me was only eclipsed by the

sadness that weighed him down like a sparrow tied to a anvil. It seems he suffered

from a human disease called depression. I was to learn much about this condition

over the next few years. I won’t bore you with the details but the genesis of his

condition is worth knowing about. It will explain a lot of the why for the way he was

Chapter two

2001

Life was good but mother hadn’t been herself for the last few months so David had

moved in to help her out. She was on oxygen now and much weaker than before but then

we were all three years older.

It was a Tuesday Night in late February. Mother always played bridge with some of the

other seniors at the community center, the one at the top of the street. Said it kept her

sharp. David always drove her there and picked her up afterwards.

David and I were dozing on the couch in the den after dinner when we heard the soundof clattering dishes from the front of the house. We both jumped up and ran for the living

room. I got there first. Mother was sprawled face first against her knees with her head

wedged against the radiator. The spittle at the corner of her mouth was turning red and

her dentures hung from her mouth for a split second before falling onto the ottoman in

front of her.like around her spit out dentures. Her dinner was splattered across the shiny

Page 13: The Lawyer Who Broke My Legapril2

hardwood floor while her rocking chair still danced with bounced off the floor lamp

 behind her.

"Jesus," screamed David. "What happened Mom".

" I don't know," she sputtered, clutching her chest and gasping for breath. David

scrambled to the kitchen, grabbed a glass of water and stumbled back. He dropped

Mother's dentures into the glass then carefully lifted her up and put her on the living-

room sofa, the one covered in plastic no one ever sat on.

"I'm calling 911." Said David.

"No no, Don't you dare,” Mother wailed. “I'll be all-right."

"No way Mom." said David as he jumped to the phone in the front hall and made the

call.

David's sister lived four doors away. He told Mother he'd get her and be right back.

Before she could say anything he bolted out the side door and ran up the street. I put my

paw on Mother's arm but there was no response, just weak raspy breathing. I sat, stared

and waited. Within minutes David was back with his sister in tow.

"Are you all right Mom." She said as though Mothers.s collapsing were an everyday

occurrence. Maybe it was just shock. Then I heard sirens in the distance and all hell

 broke loose.

The cops and ambulance arrived at the same time. David opened the front door to let

them in. In seconds one of the men from EMS was through the door and kneeling at

Mother's side. He took quick control. He pulled out a blood pressure cuff from the silver

case he'd brought in with him and wrapped it around Mother's skinny arm. then he

inserted a syringe and hung some kind of bag from a stand. His partner joined him after

pulling a gurney through the front door. Two cops followed behind him. They took one

look at Mother then stepped into the kitchen asking David and his sister to join them. I

stayed with Mother.

"I'm ok," said Mother to one of the men. "I don't want to go to the hospital." But the

men knew better. One of them said in a gentle voice. "Let us be the judge of that, just

relax and let us do our job." Mother accepted that and put her head back on a pillow. I

could hear the cops questioning David in the kitchen about what had happened. They

seemed satisfied with his answers and David came back to Mother's side. His face was

Page 14: The Lawyer Who Broke My Legapril2

8/9/2019 The Lawyer Who Broke My Legapril2

ashen and he was frantic. His sister stayed in the kitchen to chat with the cops. I could

hear her rambling on about her son Sandy who worked as a security guard at the

University and was trying to get on the police force. She seemed oblivious to what was

happening only steps away.

The flashing red lights from the parked ambulance and the staccato rasp of police radios

turned the living room into an episode of ER. I could only imagine what Mother was

thinking. I thought I heard her mumble "It's coming so fast," but I couldn’t say for sure

what with all the noise. Within minutes the men had wrapped Mother in warm blankets

and placed her on the gurney. The younger of the two said "We'll take her to General.

It's a teaching hospital and the closest one. Why don't you follow us and we'll run the

siren." There was no mistaking the look in both of their eyes. imploring David to do

just that. He didn't want to scare Mother. "Right away," said David. "I’ll just grab my

coat." Suddenly Mother reached up and grabbed David's arm. In a voice racked with

 pain she said,

"David, I want to change my will." Everybody froze. " The lady said it was the law but

she lied. I know that now and I want to change it. I don't want you and your sister to

argue after I'm gone." but then the sedatives kicked in and numbed her into silence.

David stood dumbfounded as the men carried Mother out to the waiting ambulance. He

had no idea what his Mother was talking about. His sister had Power of Attorney and

looked after mother’s legal affairs. He should have paid more attention.

David went to the kitchen. His sister was still babbling on about her son Sandy. The

cops listened with pained expressions on their faces as if they’d heard this all before. .

"Are you coming with me or do you want to drive your own car?" Asked David.

"Oh I can't go. She said. “I have to deliver my newspapers in the morning and then give

Sandy his breakfast." David's mouth fell open and the cops checked the shine on their

 boots.

"You're kidding me." Said David.

"No I'm not." She said. Then turned on her heel and huffed out the door. She could do

things like that, spur of the moment and it could be months before she’d speak to you

again. David and the cops watched her scoot up the street from the living room window.

Page 15: The Lawyer Who Broke My Legapril2

8/9/2019 The Lawyer Who Broke My Legapril2

The taller of the two said "Your mother's in pretty bad shape. Doesn't your sister care?"

David mumbled something under his breath as he put on his winter coat, the old leather

one. He was too shaken right now and his sister was the last thing on his mind. The cops

left then. David grabbed a broom from the closet and swept up the mess on the floor and

put mother’s dentures in a zip lock bag to take with him. After checking my water dish,

he dropped a biscuit on the floor for me and left. I heard the dead bolt click and hopped

onto the ottoman by the window. I watched as the ambulance backed out onto the greasy

frozen street. It's wheels crunched on the surface and slipped a bit as it pulled away. The

siren started up as David pulled in behind them and followed in their tracks. A few

bundled neighbors stared from their lighted doorways but soon closed up when the show

was over and shut their lights. The cops sat in their car for a few minutes comparing notes

then eased off into the freezing February night. I figured it might be a long one. I was

right.

I heard him come in around four in the morning. I barely recognized him. He was

worn out and exhausted. He fell into bed and was asleep in seconds. I wasn't far behind

him. We got up around nine and David put me outside. Neither of us had slept very

well. By the time I came back in he'd had a quick shower and was downing some toast.

On the counter was a steaming carafe of hot coffee. He set my dinner down and stared

out the window while I wolfed it down. after I eat. I'll try to get back around

dinnertime." Then he left and I jumped on the couch in the den and went back to sleep.

Two hours later I heard his car pull into the drive.

"That was quick."I thought.

His face was ashen he walked flustered like.

"Things don't look good for Mom, girl." as he grabbed the makings for a peanut butter

sandwich. I'm taking you with me soon as I finish this snack. He sat down and stared at

nothing in particular, his thoughts far away. A few minutes later he picked me up and off

we went.

I wondered what a hospital was. It was only a short drive away and it took forever to find

a parking spot. Once we did David scooped me up and carried me through some big

doors marked Emergency. He carried me down long corridors with colored strips painted

Page 16: The Lawyer Who Broke My Legapril2

on the floor. There seemed to be a lot of old people lying on gurneys along the walls.

David said they were waiting for triage. There sure were a lot of them. I thought. More

than anyone could look after. We finally came to a set of steel doors marked Intensive

Care and walked through. We stepped into a large room with five beds in it. Only two

were occupied. Mother was one of them. The pungent smell of antiseptic mixed with fear

swept over me. The room glowed a garish yellow under the humming fluorescent lights.

The heart monitors bleeped their monotonous tone with only an occasional squawk on the

intercom to break up the stifling silence.

Mother was propped up slightly in her bed with tubes sticking out from under the

blankets. She was hooked up to an IV pumping morphine into her veins; a quick

reminder of how serious things really were

David's sister sat off to one side reading yesterday's newspaper. The same one she

delivered. A day late as usual I thought.

"Why did you bring the dog" she asked. David said nothing as he lay me down at

Mother's feet. She fixed me with a soft look and clutched at my coat trying to pet me.

Her feet felt cold even through the blankets. I tried to generate as much heat as I could

but Mother had no idea what was happening around her. David said hello to his sister but

her cool reply spoke volumes.

Maybe it was the shock.

David took Mother's hand and said in a worn voice "Hi Mom feeling any better.? Mother

stared through him and studied the far wall. She said nothing. A nurse passed behind

them and pulled the curtains closed around the bed of the other patient nearby. A few

minutes later the curtain parted slightly and she came out and spoke to David's sister. She

was a round faced woman in her fifties with a kind and gentle demeanor; but there was

no mistaking her calm authority. A moment later I heard her say "is that your little dog?"

David's sister said "no it's David’s meaning "and I don't know why he brought her here."

The nurse spun around and said to David.

"Hi David, my name is Anne and I'm the head of the icu. Would you mind stepping into

the hall with me. "Sure" said David. Once out of earshot she said "I've told your sister

about your mom's condition. It's not good. She barely made it through the night. Our

tests show a ruptured aorta. She's fighting like hell but I have to tell you she may not

make it through the day. If there is anyone you need to call you'd best do it now.

"No" said David. “I called her two nephews and they’re on their way. They mean the

world to her.”

"I thought she mentioned them a while ago. She really wants to see them badly. But I

have a favor to ask of you. It's about your dog."

"Sorry, I guess I was wrong to bring her. I thought she'd cheer Mother up. I’ll take her

home.

"On the contrary said Anne. Do you see the woman in the other bed. David snuck a

quick peek around the corner. He could make out a small form covered in blankets but

little else.

“Barely” he said.

"She saw you come in with your dog and asked us if you'd bring her over for a few

minutes.

"What, right now?” Said David.

Yes please. said Anne. Nobodys’ dropped by for two days. I hate it when they go

alone. ones come to see her for days ikely has less time than your mom.. The doctors do

said David's sister but David wasn't so sure. Everything was going too fast. After

pausing for a few moments he looked at his sister and said "If it will help let's do it." His

sister agreed with a nod of her head. Ok said the nurse. I'll let the doctors know. It

shouldn't take long but I have another favor to ask of you David.

Yes said David. She has very little time left said the nurse and she is all alone. she has

outlived whatever family she had. There was only day nurse with her when she was

admitted. but she saw you with your dog and would like to know if you would bring her

over for a few minutes. Of course said David. right now? Yes please said the nurse. I

have to prep your mother for her procedure and we can't have the dog there anyway.

curtains around Mother's bed . David placed me carefully in the crook of the woman's

arm. She was very old, her face so sunken that the veins on her face looked like the little

blue highways you see on a map She reached for my head to pet me. My ears turned

down and my nose went up in that appreciative way all animals have. As she weakly

touched me a warm smile lit up her face and her shrunken gray eyes looked into mine

with unbelievable warmth. Pulsating lights danced all around her. She was trying to tell

me something but couldn't speak So she stared and stared without saying anything. She

was beautiful. David stood off to the side mesmerized She kept staring and staring into

my eyes then suddenly looked up. Her eyes filled with tears and her hands fell softly to

her side. A guttural heave lifted her bony chest then nothing. Her head flopped to one

side. The light left her eyes followed by silence and a cold stare. The lights that

surrounded her turned softer and began to fade. I felt wisps of energy rise and leave the

room No more than ten minutes had passed but a lifetime left the room. "My God

whispered David she's dead. It was the first time David had seen someone die. He left to

fetch the head nurse. It was then I saw a tall strange man walk away from the woman’s

bed and go stand by the nurse’s station. saw a tall stranger standing in the corner David

came up to Mother's bed, scooped me up and carried me over to the other bed. The head

nurse pulled the

he didn't see her he stepped out to the hall. It was then that a blood curdling cry came

from behind Mother's curtain. David noticed equipment being shoved inside but had no

clue as to what it might be. He did notice several pairs of shoes that were not there

before. It must have been the doctors performing their procedure. Shit thought David the

bastards are practicing on Mother. This is a teaching hospital after all. Another loud

scream. David started to walk towards the curtain when the head nurse came out. she

said to David "you'd better come quick. we did and the doctors trundled with the portable

equipment they'd been using. Mother was covered up to the neck and seemed to be in

shock. David began to freak out when Mother whispered are the boys here yet? Then

her eyes grew wide as she looked to the doorway and saw her two nephews standing

there. Christopher, Sandy and Sandy's new wife June. The boys had never gotten along.

Mother's eyes pulled them towards her and when they were at her side she said. Promise

me you won't argue anymore. she made them make up since they had apparently recently

argued. This was her sole purpose right now. She barely saw David or his sister. I was

sitting on a chair off to one side when I heard David sigh loudly. The monitor was

beeping loudly. The head nurse rushed over to increase the morphine, to ease the pain

written on Mother's face; but it was too late. The beep became steady, and mother

slumped forward. The boys were frozen, hands at their sides staring in disbelief. I

sensed the scene searing davids brain and then healing cause he couln’t handle the pain

for the rest of his life. Their grandma who had raised both of them was gone. David

screamed No as he covered her exposed feet. The nurses in the area continued h their

work seemingly unperturbed but I knew better. This was the second time in twenty

minutes I'd felt a lifetime leave the room. I'd had enough. The head nurse put her arms

around David's sister. If I ever wanted to find heroes I knew exactly where to look.

David picked me up and the last sound we heard were the curtains whooshing closed

Chapter six

Lawyers

A lawyer can steal more with a briefcase than a hundred men with guns.

Don Corleone

 possible title WHAT INHERITANCE?

Weapons of crass deception another possible title

Never have so many felt entitled to such much for doing so little.

And David was about to find out just how true that paraphrase was. Lawyers deal in

documents, weapons of crass deception.

At the corner of grief and greed lives a the king of parasites, the lawyer.

As soon as David laid eyes on John Black leaning back in his chair, feet up on the table,

he knew he was in trouble least that’s what he told me. And, not just because he was a

pompous fuck of a fool but because he was a double for Don another pompous fuck of a

fool, the one that was married to his idiot cousin Marcelled herself a the Mother of all

pompous fucking fools. I could hear David thinking “Lord how many more of them are

there.” Lot’s more thought to myself but I didn’t want to spoil the party.
