Introduction
• If you've had a teacher or coach who seemed harsh, why do you think this person acted that way?
• How did your perspective change, if at all, as you got to know the teacher or coach better, or after you saw the results in the classroom or on the field?
• When have you felt like God was a harsh teacher or coach? Explain.
Introduction (VIDEO)
• … don’t teach me how to live like a free man• … i don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me• … don’t teach me about moderation and liberty
i prefer a shot of grape juice• … don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
just give me a new law
Ezekiel 36:26-28• 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new
spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 You will live in the land I gave your forefathers; you will be my people, and I will be your God.
I. Allow God to Give You A New Heart
• How does sin damage your spiritual heart?
• When God promises to give us a new heart, what practical impact does that have on our lives?
II. Rely on the Holy Spirit
• Read Ephesians 5:18. Why would Paul contrast being drunk with alcohol to relying on the Holy Spirit?
• What are some of the results of relying on the Holy Spirit?
III. Trust God for the Power to Live Godly Life
• What role have your friends played in helping you live a godly life? What role have you played in your friends' lives?
• When have you seen big change happen in your life, and what role did God have in that?
IV. Additional Discussion• How do you think the Israelites felt whenever they
heard that a prophet had a message for them?• How did the prophets offer hope to the Israelites while
at the same time correcting their behavior?• What are some modern-day things that cause us to get
too comfortable with our own "captivity" in the world?• Read Ezekiel 36:26-28 and Jeremiah 31:31-34. What
are some differences some similarities between these two passages from the Old Testament?
• Read Hosea 1:2. Why would God tell Hosea to go marry a prostitute?
V. Application
• What specific things in your life harden your heart? What things soften your heart?
• What's some evidence that God has given you a new heart?
• How does God's promise of a new heart give you hope for the future?
