BLACKBERRY BOLD 9700

BEST IN CLASS

The Bold 9700 is, quite simply, the best BlackBerry ever made. It’s small, sleek and extremely good looking, with a wealth of improvements and the bonus of a battery that performs well.

The latest Bold is more akin to the Curve family, and is actually slightly smaller than the 8900, yet it has the addition of 3G, the fastest processor yet used on a BlackBerry and OS 5.0 as standard.

The screen is smaller than the original Bold, but it hasn’t lost any of the detail. The resolution is the same, making the pixels even fi ner than before, and this makes reading text or looking at pictures an incredibly nice experience. The camera has a 3.2-megapixel sensor with a fl ash and it records video too.

A Trackpad is in place, as fi rst used on the budget-friendly 8520. With the superior screen it works very well here, especially in the web browser where it makes navigation very easy. You can adjust the sensitivity and before long you’ll have it on the highest setting and be able to fl y around the menus.

The other improvement that will possibly appeal most is in the battery department. Despite having a much faster (624MHz) processor, it happily lasted for 2-3 days: a vast improvement over the original Bold.

SONY ERICSSON VIVAZBEST IN CLASS

The classy and curvaceous Vivaz from Sony Ericsson is a high-performing handset with dazzling looks.

As the second Symbian S60 device from the Sony Ericsson stables, the

Vivaz squeezes many of the features of the high-end Satio into a svelte casing, refl ecting Sony Ericsson’s new ‘human curvature’ design philosophy (we’re not entirely sure what that means, but the phone certainly looks good and is comfortable in the hand).

The Vivaz features the same S60 5th Edition operating system, is fully touchscreen and now adds HD video recording (720p) into the mix (helped along by a faster 720MHz processor). Keeping the size down has resulted in the loss of the 12.1-megapixel camera and Xenon fl ash, replaced here with a still highly respectable 8.1-megapixel camera with LED fl ash.

The Vivaz now comes with clients for Facebook and Twitter, but does not include the new Timescape and Mediascape software coming to the Xperia X10 (Android OS). Other pre-loaded applications include Google Maps, QuickOffi ce and YouTube.

A 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB connector mark two other key changes over the Satio. It also has a 8GB microSDHC card, expandable to 32GB.

Nokia 2220 slideSize isn’t everything, but if you fancy something small enough to disappear in your pocket rather than weigh you down, the Nokia 2200 slide offers a delightful touch of form with a little sprinkling of function thrown in. As classy, sleek and fashionable phones go, this is hard to beat, especially in the outrageously chic pink colour variant. Features are fairly light on the ground, but there’s a profi cient FM radio on board, along with Ovi Mail and a web browser. However it’s the dinky size, decent keys and cool looks that set this slider apart.

ENTRY-LEVELNot everyone wants an all-singing, all-dancing phone, for many a competent, stylish and reliable model is more than enough; here’s our top everyday models

SAMSUNG E1120BEST IN CLASS

Such is the ultra-basic nature of the Samsung E1120, using the handset is like going back in time to a bygone era. It has nothing in the way of a feature set; there’s no camera,

no media player, no web browser and no connectivity options.

However this lack of features will be a blessing to the intended target market: those who just want a reliable handset to make calls and send texts. And it does have a positive side to it, because the lack of high-level functions means the E1120 is able to offer a formidable battery life, with an unbeatable 8.5 hours talktime and 540 hours standby (that’s a staying power of more than 22 days). So it’s an ideal choice for the occasional user or as an emergency back-up handset to leave in the car, for example.

The E1120 is styled in a traditional candy bar design, with large keypad buttons and a four-way navigation controller. On the inside the menu is a straightforward affair, with basic coloured icons arranged in an orderly fashion and a large, legible font. Despite having a very small 1.5-inch display, it’s still extremely intuitive to use.

The Samsung E1120 is as basic as mobile phones get, but for some users that’s a very good thing. As an everyday model for simple talk and text use, it will do the job just fi ne.

HDMI output, with Dolby surround sound plus the ability to edit video and produce pro-looking effects in a matter of seconds. Then there’s the new operating system: Symbian^3.

This new operating system allows for multiple homescreens, with apps and widgets, great 2D and 3D graphics performance and access to Nokia's Ovi Store, Ovi Maps (with free walk and

drive navigation) and other services. For the fi rst time, the operating system coupled

with the capacitive touchscreen display enables multi-touch, fl ick scrolling (aka kinetic scrolling) and pinch-zoom. It really is a joy to use.

The phone offers seamless social networking, with Facebook and Twitter updates pushed directly to the home screen, plus full integration with the phonebook and location services.

BUSINESSWhether it’s a fully equipped keyboard for messaging or a decent set of offi ce features, these handsets are extra smart and just perfect for corporate users

NOKIA C5BEST IN CLASS

The C5 marks the debut of a new Cseries range, bringing affordable smartphones to the masses. The Nokia C5 will be powered by Symbian’s Series 60 3rd Edition (non-touch) operating

system, and comes with a range of social networking features built-in.

Despite some criticism that Symbian has not been able to compete with the latest advanced operating systems like Android or the iPhone, it is still a reliable OS that is more than capable of holding its own at the lower-end of the market. In fact, we truly believe that this phone will give Symbian a whole new lease of life.

The stylish looking handset certainly won’t look out of place on the boardroom table and sports a 2.2-inch display, 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS for use with Ovi Maps and free navigation, 3G with HSPA, 3.5mm headphone jack and FM radio. The package includes a 2GB memory card as standard, but this can be expanded up to 32GB with microSDHC cards.

Perhaps the most important thing is the price range; the C5 is expected to cost around £100-£120 on prepay, or free on a very affordable monthly tariff – putting this phone up against the likes of the Samsung Genio or models from INQ Mobile.

APPLE iPHONE 4BEST IN CLASS

Apple has come out on top again. The iPhone 4 has been given a design makeover, which makes it slightly less rounded at the corners, but signifi cantly more stylish.

It also corrects some of the fl aws of its predecessor. The battery life is signifi cantly improved, the camera is much better – now with an LED fl ash – and its A4 processor means it can go toe to toe with its most powerful rivals.

Few people had grumbled about the quality of the 3GS screen, but iPhone 4’s new Retina Display is a huge leap on. Apple has been waxing lyrical about its pixel density of 326 pixels per inch and 800:1 contrast ratio, but to boil it down beyond the tech specs: it’s beautifully sharp, whether you’re reading e-books, playing games or browsing through your photos.

iPhone 4’s camera boasts a fi ve-megapixel sensor and the software around it makes the device excellent for taking photos. HD video recording is a big selling point. FaceTime is another of iPhone 4’s big new features. It’s essentially video calls, but over Wi-Fi only, to other iPhone 4 handsets. The quality is excellent: a big step on from 3G videocalls.

iPhone 4 ships with the new iOS 4 software. Features like multi-tasking, folders for apps, homescreen wallpapers, and a unifi ed inbox with threaded emails are hugely welcome

Apple’s trump card remains the App Store and its huge community of developers who will be making apps to take full advantage of a screen that has to be seen to be believed.
