    Preparations Before Traveling

1 - Learn Turkish Before Traveling!:

One of the hardest difficulties upon arrival to Turkey is the language barrier, because

Turks speak only Turkish language and it is very rare to meet who speaks English.

Therefore, it is advised to learn as much as you can of the daily conversations

before arriving to Turkey. You will find a lot of online websites that offer lessons in

learning Turkish language, keep away from grammar and learn the words and

questions commonly used. At the end of this document I attached an introduction to

Turkish language, as well as some useful links of learning Turkish websites.

2- A Sufficient Amount Of Money:

The donor of the scholarship, referred as the YTB, does not give any money for

the arrived students before the passage of at least one month. You will need to

what covers the expenses of your first month, which is mostly full of movements

and payments. Besides, you will need to pay about $ 100 ( 172 TL ) for issuing

residence, this amount will be refunded to you by the YTB after six months.

The minimum amount that should be taken before traveling is $ 500 for one person

and without a family. After one month from the arrival, the YTB will open bank

accounts for the students after making sure that they have already completed

registration procedures at the university, the language Institute and the dormitory,

salary of the scholarship will be deposited automatically in the twenty-fifth of every

    month without any additional procedure.

3- Buy Your Needs As You Can:

The cost of living in Turkey is generally expensive. Buy the necessary things before

traveling and well prepare for the winter season, which starts at the beginning of

the school year. This website give you an approximate overview about the cost of

    living in Turkey.

4- Folk Costume And a Flag:

During the study of language there are a lot of events where students represent

their countries, most of the students are preparing for these events very nicely, folk

costumes give these events exude pure glamor.

    5- Host:

After knowing the university and the city in which the student will study language in

it, it is advisable to find former students in the same city, and communicate with

them for the reception during arrival and the guidance in completing the

registration and residence procedures. The social networks, like Facebook, can help

on the mission of finding students in Turkey. At the end of this document I attached

a link of the biggest Facebook group that includes foreign students living in Turkey.

    6- Travel Ticket:

After telling you that you are one of the winners, the YTB will communicate with

you regarding travel ticket. They provide a one-way ticket for one person at a date

specified by them. You Do not have the authority to specify the date or postpone it.

Therefore, the YTB will contact with you before booking a ticket to make sure that

you agree on the booking submitted by them. If you would like to travel on another

date you can travel at your expense, and the YTB will pay you a certain amount as

compensation for the cost of airline ticket in a maximum period of 7 months from

your arrival. Because ticket prices vary according to the company and the date of

travel, you should not expect to get the full cost of the ticket, but an amount that is

equivalent to the price of the ticket at the normal situation (the lowest price

    approximately).

    7- Documents And Visa:

The YTB will request you to translate the following documents to Turkish:

graduation certificate, transcript and the medical report (medical examination of

viruses). After the translation, you will hand the original documents with translation

in addition to the passport to the Turkish Embassy in your country, in the date and

time mentioned in the letter sent to you by the YTB, also you will fill out the visa

application form and sign the scholarship agreement (click to view the agreement).

During a week you will receive all the documents certified with the seal of the

embassy as well as your passport with visa.

    8- At The Airport:

The flight of those who accepted the ticket booked by the YTB will arrive to Istanbul,

and they will have to move from the airport to the desired city by their own and at

their own expense. At the airport there will be a team from the YTB waiting for the

arriving students, in one of the corners of the arrival hall, the logo of the Turkish

scholarship will be prominent to grab the attention of students. The team will record

students arrival to Turkey, as well as providing guidance and answering students'

questions about the next steps and how to travel to other cities. You will have to

move first from the airport to the bus station named "OTOGAR", and there will book

a ticket to the desired city at your expense. You can check the ticket prices of

traveling between cities and pre-book a ticket through this site.

    Mobile Networks And The Internet

    1- Mobile Importing Charge (Customs):

In Turkey there is customs duties on the mobile phones imported from abroad

and the required amount is 130 Turkish liras (about $ 73). This amount is

mandatory on all phones entering from outside the country in case are used

with Turkish SIM cards. You will be given a grace period of 30 days from the

moment of using any Turkish SIM card, during this period you are supposed to

pay the above-mentioned amount, unless the device will stop working and you

will have to pay a fine in the case of paying after the bypass of grace period.

Therefore it is advised to follow the following:

    - - in case your mobile is modern and deserves to pay fees for it , it is

recommended to do not use it when you arrive to Turkey and to rely on prepaid

cards (Trk Telekom) in order to communicate during your first week. Keep your

phone until you register in the university which you will study in.

    - In order to register your mobile officially (by paying custom) you will need the

following documents: a copy of the university registration, a copy of the

Language Institute registration, a copy of the passport, and a copy of the

residence or at least a letter from the office of issuing the residence that yours is

still in progress and did not come out yet.

    - After preparing the above documents, first you will pay 100 TL in one of the IRS

branches (Vergi idaresi) and after obtaining the payment receipt you will go to

the mobile company that you are using their SIM card and give them all the

documents including the payment receipt in addition to the amount of 30 TL,

and your mobile will be activated within three days.

    - 2- The Cheapest Mobile Company:

In Turkey there are three major telecom companies: Turkcell , Vodafone and Avea,

all of them use GSM system and do not support CDMA System. Each company offers

its facilities, but Avea is the cheapest and provides suitable packages for students.

The international calls are expensive in all the companies even with the special

packages offered by them, and often students communicate internationally using

  • Travel preparations for the Turkish scholarships winners

Made by :Nashwan Ameen 5 www.facebook.com/nashwanameen

communication programs via the Internet VOIP (voice over IP) because it is cheaper

and suitable in case you have a fast Internet connection. It is not advised to buy any

unknown SIM card or pre-activated one, which are not registered with your name, it

will stop directly in a short period of time and you will not be able to re-activate it.

The price of the new SIM card ranges between 30 to 40 Turkish Liras, and often

contains a balance of about the same cost of the purchase price.

    3- The Internet :

Most Student dormitories are equipped with wireless Internet recently. As well as

all mobile companies provide mobile Internet service with a speed up to 21 Mbps.

In case you are not satisfied with the free internet service of your dormitory, you

can also buy a Wi-Fi modem from one of the mobile companies that offer various

packages. One of these offers, for example, is 5 GB of Bandwidth monthly for 31 TL,

    from Avea.

    Transportation

    1- Inside Cities:

With so many of the private transport companies, state transport is considered the

best means of internal transportation, you can easily keep track of their movements

using the Internet in the major cities. Fares are paid using prepaid cards in most

cities and these cards are available in most retail stores and stalls. In some cities the

university ID card can be used for paying transportation fares and can be recharged.

Government transport fares varying in different cities, but there is a special discount

for university students in all cities. Average state transportation fee for students

(after discount) is between 1 to 1.3 TL. Besides, private transportation are available

and operating by cash payment. Average fee is 2 TLs, some of them offer a discount

for students to 1.25 TL. To take advantage of the student discount in buses, just tell

them that you're a student (renci).

Note: the discounted card of the state transport in Ankara, requires the discount

badge which is a stamp of the so-called "PASO" costing 25 TLs and lasts for a full

year. Using the discounted card without the PASO may expose the user to a

    financial fine.

    2- Between Cities:

There are a large number of private transport companies which offer premium

services at different prices vary according to the services provided during the trip

(such as the quality of meals, the availability of a personal TV, Internet). Ticket

prices are affected by the tourism seasons and during holidays. Therefore it is

advisable to check out the prices and the offered services of different companies

before booking. Most companies offer booking through their websites, so it is easy

to check dates, prices and offers simply and without the need to go to one of their

branches, using this website as an example. Companies' buses gather in a large

complex away from the city center, named "OTOGAR", all the trips between cities

start and terminate to this complex, which connected with the city center via the

metro, buses and taxis. you can also travel between cities using airlines and also at

competitive prices. This is a website that can be used to check and book airline

    tickets online.

    To-do List After The Arrival

    1- Temporary Accommodation :

After arriving to the desired city, it is supposed to go first to the student dormitory

(Yurt) temporarily assigned to it by the YTB, its address is mentioned in the last

email from the YTB. The student will need a copy of the email as proof for the

placement procedures. This is only a temporary accommodation and you should go

to the head office of accommodation in the city to know your permanent

    dormitory.

    2- The Institute:

The next step is to go and register at the Institute of Language (TMER) assigned to

it by the YTB, its address is mentioned in the last email from the YTB. Registration at

the institute is very important and it is supposed to get three original copies of the

enrollment record at the institute, which will be needed during the registration

procedure at the university, dormitory and the residence.

    3- Permanent Accommodation: f

State dormitories vary in terms of services and conform , old ones are overcrowded

with few services and the number of students in each room is up to 8, while

modern ones provide more privacy and better services such as a refrigerator, a

study table ,the internet and en-suite bathroom, and the number of students in each

room is between two to four people. Therefore, it is very important to speed up the

registration procedures in the permanent accommodation , because the places are

limited and modern dormitories are wanted by everyone, especially in the big cities.

Students should take advantage of the former students regarding the available

dormitories, and should also give the priority to be near the Language Institute,

since the transportation problems would be annoying in the long-term. Registration

procedures for the permanent accommodation are made through the head office of

Student Housing in the city, which you should go to it early to have a greater chance

to choice, while the options become limited or non-existent in case you came too

late. Registration requires a copy of the passport and the enrollment record of the

    Language Institute.

    4- The University:

The registration at the university ( niversite), which the student is placed to by

the YTB, should be done as soon as possible. The Turkish language teaching centers

are not available in all cities, so some students may stay one year in a city other

than the city where their universities are, in order to study Turkish language. In that

case, it is required to travel to the university in order to register and to get a

    copy of the enrollment record.

    5- The Residence:

Then it is supposed to go to the office of issuing residence (ikamet) accompanied by

the required documents; the passport, the Institute registration and some personal

photos in addition to 172 TL. Student gets residency after one month from the

submission. The residence is valid for a full year and should be renewed after the

expiration of this period. The student will pay the amount of issuing residence at his

expense and this amount will be refunded to his bank account later, after five to six

months. You should go early to the place of issuing residence "emniyet", it would be

very crowded at the beginning of the school year, since a lot of students come to

    renew theirs.

    Accommodation Options

    1- State Dormitory :

Staying in a state dormitory is free for the scholarship holders. Modern state

dormitories are very suitable for the academic life, because they are not crowded (

two to four people in a large room), in addition to having an en suite bathroom in

each room. In general, all state dormitories provide:

    - Free Internet of good speed.

    - Contains a small self-serving restaurant (canteen), which provides the free

meals. Besides, drinks, juices and biscuits are available for sale.

    - A free breakfast inside the dormitory equivalent to 2.2 TL.

    - A free dinner inside the dormitory equivalent to 4.5 TL.

    - Washing clothes for free.

    - You get a state dormitory card that you can use to stay for free in any

state dormitory in all Turkish cities.

    - A large study hall which is suitable for study if the rooms were noisy and

    overcrowded.

    - All dormitories work with fingerprint system to log on and log off as well as to

    receive free meals.

    - Any student who does not have a scholarship can stay in a state dormitory for

    175 TL per month.

    2- Other Options:

In addition to state dormitories there are private dormitories and they are modern

and not crowded ( at maximum three people in a large room), provide the same

features of the state ones with better meals, but the average monthly cost is

350TL. They spread across the cities, especially in the areas adjacent to the

    universities.

Also, you can easily accommodate in a small apartment for more privacy. They

are available widely and their rates vary depending on the province and the region

and if they are equipped with furniture or not. You can also live in an apartment

with a group of students, sharing the costs of the rent and the food.

If you decided to stay in a private dormitory, you will pay its fees at your own

expense, and you will not receive any compensation form the YTB.

Appendix 2: An Introduction To Turkish

It is very important to have a basic knowledge of Turkish language before arriving to Turkey,

to overcome the obstacles encountered by students upon arrival, because the majority of

Turks do speak only their native language. Here we give an overview of this language, as

well as drawing an outline for those wishing to learn Turkish before traveling, by referring to

some good websites that offer lessons for learning Turkish language.

Turkish is a unique language, which depends mainly on adding suffixes to the root or the

keyword. It has a wide range of suffixes that lead different purposes and you can find four or

more suffixes together connected to the keyword. These suffixes are affected by the last

vowel in the word and change according to it, so that speech becomes more smooth,

according to a harmony rules that will be discussed later. In this suction the symbol (-) is

used to separate the keyword from the suffixes added to it in order to ease the distinction

between the original word and the added suffixes, while in normal writing suffixes are added

without any separation. On the other hand, the merit of this language is that its words are

easy to read and pronounce, because each letter has only a one sound, therefore it is

possible to pronounce any new word you may encounter without the need for a prior

knowledge of how to read it. In addition, a large number of Turkish words came originally

from other languages, Arabic words, for example, represents about 40% of the Turkish

words, and there is also a significant proportions of the words came from English, French

    and Persian.

1- Alphabet: Turkish alphabet consists of 29 letters derived from the Latin alphabet

and share with them the same pronunciation in general, except for a set of letters

with different pronunciation or additives that are unique to this language. The

following table shows all the letters with their pronunciation in English, and an

    example with its meaning.

Yellow shaded letters have a different sound in Turkish language away from the

normal pronunciation in English, while the green shaded letters are unique for

Turkish. The following four letters (o, , u, ) are similar in pronunciation with a

slight difference in terms of the aggrandizement and need a long time to master

their correct pronunciation. In Turkish language each letter has a single

pronunciation and thus it is easy to read after well mastering the pronunciation of

the letters. You can take advantage of Google Translate and some other sites such as

"sesli sozluk" to learn and practice the correct pronunciation of the words and to

learn their meanings and synonyms as well.

2- Pronouns: In the Turkish language there is no difference between male and female

and both of them are referred to using the same pronoun. There is also a suffixes

that act on behalf of the pronoun, added to the names, verbs and adjectives, and

those suffixes are affected by the last vowel in the word added to it (highlighted in

green), according to the harmony rules that will be explained later in this section.

The short form described in the following table, which utilizes suffixes instead of

separated pronouns, is the most commonly used in reality:

3- Basic Rules: The Turkish language has a Different syntax other than that of the

familiar languages, the subject comes first, and then the object, and the verb comes

at the end of the sentence. In general, adjectives come before the described noun.

One of the most important properties of the Turkish language is the harmony

between the word and the suffixes added to it so that the pronunciation of the new

word, resulting from the integration of the original word and the suffixes, becomes

more smooth and spontaneous. There are three Harmony rules for adding suffixes

    to words.

First Harmony Rule: special for the suffixes which own four different formats (for

example: Im/im/um/m) and the Rule as follows:

Meaning word + suffix Example Suitable suffix starts with The last vowel in the word

    You're Nashwan Nashwan-sn naNashw I a OR

    I'm Adel Adel-im leAd e OR i

    You're doctors Doktor-sunuz roDokt U OR o u

    You're strong Gl-sn lG OR

Second Harmony Rule: special for the suffixes which own two different formats (for

example: Lar/Ler) and the Rule as follows:

Meaning word + suffix Example Suitable suffix starts with The last vowel in the word

    They're wise Akll- lar Akll A a , , o , u

    They're doctors Doktor-lar roDokt

    They're smart Zeki-ler iZek E e , i , ,

    They're strong Gl-ler Gl

If the last letter in the word is vowel, as in the word (Gl), and the first letter in

the suffix is vowel too, as in the suffix We (z), a matching letter (y) should be used

between the two vowels, so the resultant word becomes (Gl-y-z). Using the

same principle, another examples are (renci-y-im) and )zeki-y-iz).

Third Harmony Rule: If the word ends with one of following letters (F, S, T, K, , , H,
