    he Laptops of My Life

    Edward A. Quinto

Surely, it is with personal fondness and nostalgia that we

vividly remember our very rst laptop. We must have

gone to a big computer shop and after much deliberation

on a range of brands, functionalities and prices; we nally

bought and brought one home. That laptop became one of

our most treasured possessions for it stores the veryessence of what we are and what we hold dear in life. I

believe that a laptop is the most important gadget for

students and professionals in todays digital age and

loud!based Technology which is being challenged now by

the much smaller, handier and cheaper smartphones. "or

most of us, the laptop is also a very personal gadget with

which we immediately get hoo#ed up to and at timesinteracting with it for several hours daily. The emergence

of the laptops can be described as one of the most

signicant technological inventions of our modern time.

Stored in our laptops are our cherished photos, music,

videos, documents and letters; it essentially holds the

daily records of our lives. Indeed, the laptop or noteboo#

can be viewed as our $alter ego% or $another self%, how it

is designed in terms of covers, how it appears, its

wallpapers and what its stored data are re&ect the traits

and personality of the owner. Indeed, one can say tell me

the contents of your laptop and I will tell you what you are.

'n a much grander scale, the laptop opens up a whole new

world on how we view and run our lives in this

communication tangled age of the World Wide Web. We

surf the web (ust using our ngertips and marvel at the

instant information and da))ling images we can have

access to. In my grade school to high school days, I

remember that I have to go to the library, open a tall

cabinet, ta#e out a heavy volume of the *ncyclopedia

+mericana or ritannica and &ip through its pages to get

the information I need. Those days are gone as the large

volumes of encyclopedias are going the way of thedinosaurs due to the asteroid impact brought about by the

It runs on icrosoft Windows ? 5ome 6remium and 'Gce

well through the years which never gave up on me when I

was preparing my scientic convention posters as well as

The biggest disappointment of my life for a laptop came

from the 56 +rtist *dition. It is a very e-pensive piece of

technology that went completely bon#ers in (ust two years

of careful use. +t rst I was so impress with the 56 +rtist

*dition with its +vant 4arde design and set!up screeninitiali)ations. It is the most e-pensive piece of technology

that I bought in my life which wor#s on Windows Cista. y

frustration and dissatisfaction with the 56 +rtist *dition

was what made me venture into other brands of laptop. I

couldnt believe it when it went bon#ers in (ust over /

years. I went immediately to the 56 Hepair Service enter

located in the old library of the Thomas e7erson ulturalenter in uendia *-tension, a#ati to have it repaired. y

the way, I had beautiful e-periences at the Thomas

e7erson ultural enter :T bac# in high school and

early college days. I spent countless hours from lunchtime

till evening reading all the wonderful +merican maga)ines,

boo#s and stored microles that I can get my eyes on in

the comfort of a modern, air!conditioned and spacious

library. Two days after the repair of my 56 +rtist *dition

by the 56 Service enter, it went #aput again to my dismay

and this time I went bac# to the 56 repair Service but did

not returned bac# to pic# it up. I surrendered it completely

to the 56 Hepair Service enter since I do not have the

lu-ury of time to return to pic# it up all the way from my

place of wor# in Sampaloc, anila. In my high school and

early college life days, the traGc is still bearable, one can

travel to di7erent parts of the city in (ust an hour or so but

    >e-t is my SI >oteboo#. It is much smaller and lighter in

weight yet Euite handy for use in my class lecture classes

because if its C4+ connection for the pro(ector. Hecently it

malfunctioned and it was the rst laptop whose software

content I reformatted. I was able to care for it and nurse itbac# to healthy conditions. >ow its functioning well again.

It wor#s on Windows ? 5ome asic and 'Gce 5ome and

Student /00?. ost noteboo#s sold now in the mar#et do

not have a C4+ inlet which is Euite unfortunate on my

    part.

+fter my SI, I bought another 56 6avilion operating on

Windows ? asic and genuine icrosoft 'Gce 5ome and

Student /010. Since I found out that I couldnt do much

with a Windows ? asic, I decided to sell it to a teachingcolleague of mine for one!third its original price with J

more months of product warranty to go.

    >e-t is my S'>9 Caio, it is another laptop venture that is

not an 56 or an 56!ompaE brand. Its audio output is the

best among all my laptops but it does not have a C4+

outlet so I cannot use it for my class lectures unless I

procure so sort of adapter. It operates fast wor#ing onicrosoft Windows @ and 'Gce 5ome and Student /010.

Kast wee#, I was informed by sales agents at +benson in

anila that Sony has stopped producing the Ciao. Well I

guess my white Caio could one of the last of its #ind for

S'>9 and so it could be a museum piece someday.

I guess, the sti7 competition for the sale of personal

computers has ta#en its toll on the production of

seemingly well!established laptop brands. *ven 56 is not

immune to this trend of global slowdown in the sale of 6s.

Hecently, I saw in the news that the 56 company will be

bro#en down in two with each having its own commercialob(ectives though 56 will still continue to ma#e and sell

personal computers. Well in 56s heyday, I can count ? 56

laptops out of 10 other brands owned by my co!teachers in

    the academe.

    >e-t is my acoo# 6ro, truly an ama)ing and handsome

piece of technology. "rom the hype of +pple brands from

cellphones to tablets to 6s, I told myself that I have to

    e-pensive. Anbo-ing my acoo# 6ro was so thrilling and

the mere sliding of my hands on its smooth metal casing

stimulates a sense in me of technological perfection. Its

#eyboard that lights up in the dar# is a much welcome trait

which suits me Euite well since I li#e wor#ing late at night

    with my room lights o7.

    Hecently, I also bought an +*H +spire Switch 10 with 300

4 storage inspired by its tablet laptop conversion

functionality. +s a laptop I nd it rather small for my use so

I also sold it to a colleague at half the price and still under

2 months warranty. "or laptops, I want a big screen but

now have the standard 1J% diagonal si)ed screen. Its

diGcult now to nd a 13.2% screen.

+ year ago, I returned bac# to buying the 56 brand again. This one operates on Windows @.1 and 'Gce 5ome and

Student /010 but is no longer with me since I was able to

sell it at almost one!fourth its original price. Sorry I dont

have any photo of that laptop with me but last month my

co!teacher who bought from me brought to school and its

still functioning in tip top shape. The leopard s#in hard

plastic cover given to me by the computer shop when Ibought it still there.

I also bought an 56 Intel eleron laptop that I manage to

sell at almost one!fourth the price.

    laptop. It is an 56 6avilion 1J >oteboo# 6. So far it loo#s

out that it has no C4+ inlet.
