THE LANTERN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER
Principal’s Message Monday 30 October 2017
Dear Families and Friends,
Last week we farewelled our Year 12s. The Gradua on
Mass was a deeply moving and heart‐warming liturgy
with the theme of “Moving Beyond the Gate.” This was
followed by an Assembly which recognised each student
in her respec ve House and individuals with subject and
special awards. I would like to share parts of my speech
with you all.
“In the readings of tonight’s Mass, there were some key
pieces of advice for you all as you prepare to go beyond
the gates. St Paul encourages you to be genuine and to
hold fast to what is good, to honor each other and to
work hard. True to Nano, the woman of the welcoming
heart, he urges you to help the marginalised and the
poor and to find a way to welcome and help them. He
encourages you to live peaceably and with a strong
sense of jus ce. Our second reading, a poem by Sr
Raphael Considine, encourages us, as Nano did, to “take
our lanterns and seek Christ in the winding lanes, again,
commending you as Presenta on women to open your
hearts to those most in need.”
In Daniel O’ Leary’s book, “Begin with the heart”, he
speaks of “The holy task of educa on is to lead young
people to the edge of their own divine possibili es and
that we teachers are privileged to reveal the presence of
God’s beauty already in what is happening all around.”
As teachers we have indeed been privileged to be a part
of your journey here at PCW. We have seen you grow
from small and curious Year 7s into strong, independent,
young women, ready to face the challenges of the world
beyond the gates, ready to take your place alongside
those who have walked before you with confidence,
resilience and strong values of integrity, hope and
compassion………
We give thanks to you, class of 2017, from your
beginnings un l now, you are wonderful students who
imagine, dream, challenge, share, learn, discover and
celebrate. Class of 2017, although we are preparing to
farewell you as you go beyond the gate, know that you
will always be a Presenta on woman, shaped by your
experiences here and all those who have been part of
your journey. You and your families will always be a part
of our Presenta on family and you will always be
welcomed back with open arms.
We will keep you in our prayers as you prepare for your
exams and life beyond school, we wish you success in all
your future endeavours, may you con nue to celebrate
learning and may you always keep the Lantern burning
bright in your lives and in your hearts.”
I would also like to alert the community to a proposed
building development for 24 – 26 and 28 Chapel Street,
Windsor. This proposed development was for 20 stories,
comprising shops, offices and dwellings. The
Presenta on Sisters, as owners of the land on which the
College is built, put in an objec on on behalf of the
College, as did numerous residents. I was formally
advised today that the permit was refused.
Best wishes to all,
Filina Virgato
Principal

Director of Faith & Mission
Farewell Year 12
Our thoughts have been very much with our Year 12 students as they finished the last week of their formal schooling. The College celebrated this important stage with a series of events beginning with the Year 12 breakfast, the whole school assembly, the Gradua on Mass at St. Mary’s East St. Kilda and finally the Year 12 Gradua on Ceremony in the school hall. The Gradua on Mass of Thanksgiving is a me we gather as a faith community to acknowledge the journey of our young women through their me at Presenta on College. It is a me mixed with sadness and joy as one chapter finishes and another one begins. At this significant gathering we come together to pray, to hope and to give thanks for the contribu on of our Year 12 students to the life of Presenta on College. We also give thanks for the love and support given to them by their families, their friends, their teachers and their community. Our Gradua on Mass, celebrated by Father Joe Caddy, marked a significant rite of passage for all our Year 12 students. The theme this year was “Beyond the gate may faith, hope and love be your lantern flame”. As our Year 12 students head beyond the gates of Presenta on College, may the lantern flame of faith, hope and love be their guide along the journey of life. Light is a sacred symbol in our Chris an tradi on. Jesus is the light of the world; giving us his message of love and peace. Nano and the Presenta on sisters are the light of service and mission. On this night the light is passed onto our young women. May they con nue to be the light, a beacon of hope and jus ce, to those they encounter as they leave Presenta on College and venture into the world beyond. The passing of this light to our gradua ng class was celebrated by Sister Mary and Sister Robin and formed part of the final blessing at the Gradua on Mass last Monday. As young Presenta on women, empowered to live out the Gospel message of jus ce bravely and with op mism following the lived example of Jesus and Nano Nagle, may they be filled with the Spirit as they con nue God’s mission beyond the gates of Presenta on College. We wish them all the best for their exams and keep them in our prayers and thoughts as they embark on their final exams. Ms Josie Dile oso—Director of Faith & Mission

Year 8 Language Fes val On Thursday 26 October the annual Year 8 Language Fes val was held in the hall. Many thanks to the languages team for all the work they did to prepare for the evening and for the work they do in their classes to ins ll a love of languages within our students. Thank you to our girls for engaging in the evening and for the obvious enjoyment shown in their different presenta ons. We were thoroughly entertained by Japanese drumming, songs, speeches and short videos. As someone who has learnt another language I am a great believer in the benefits of language learning and I was thrilled to see the work and talents of the Year 8 students on display.
At PCW we celebrate and recognise student achievement and over the past few weeks we have done this in various formats including the English assembly, Sportswoman’s Night and the Year 12 Gradua on awards evening. This year we have also had two students undertaking the Monash Extension Program, Iona Walton and Isabella Oates, and two students undertaking the University of Melbourne Extension Program, Persephone Gronert and Monica Ren. Middle Years Baccalaureate (MYP)
Over the past few days, I have been excitedly following the proceedings of the Interna onal Baccalaureate global conference which was held at the Hague. One of the guest speakers, Dr Tony Wagner from Harvard University’s Innova on Lab spoke at length about the nature of the world and the need for schools to be places which foster innovators. His presenta on challenged the o en held view that we live in the knowledge economy, sugges ng that the rapid pace at which technology is changing we should consider ourselves to be living in the ‘innova on era’. Central to his discussion was the idea that ‘you never know where the spark of passion is going to lead’. If we consider the great innovators of our me, passion, discipline and a determina on to learn from mistakes are all hallmarks of innovators but also characteris cs of great learners. At Presenta on College, we strive to foster this mindset in all of our students. I encourage you to speak with your daughter about what she is passionate about and encourage her to take risks, challenge herself and develop a strong determined mindset in her approach to learning because as Dr Wagner suggests, ‘you never know where the spark of passion is going to lead’! In this edi on of the Lantern I am pleased to share with you some learning snapshots from our Year 7 students from Science and Mathema cs..

What are you learning about? How does what you are learning connect with the outside world?
We are learning about our solar system & galaxy. Our topic is "Will Mining Asteroids allow us to live in space?". I think it will be important because living in space could be the future for the generations to come.
It fascinates me to think about everything outside of earth. It really opened my eyes to see how small we are compared to the galaxy! It's amazing how humans could develop into a multi planetarium species. It excites me for the future!
Siobhan Gleeson
What are you learning about? How does what you are learning connect with the outside world?
In Science we are learning about the solar system and gravity, forces etc. This is important because we need to know about what keeps us on the ground!
I am interested in learning about gravity because there is different gravity on other planets

What are you learning about? How does what you are learning connect with the outside world?
Currently in Science we are learning about space. The big question that our class strives to answer is about mining meteorites and how mining them could benefit us. This is useful if in the future we want to study space or become an astronaut.
I find it interesting how people have all of this knowledge about space, yet some of it still remains a mystery! This topic connects to how our world works and how one day we may have to mine meteorites or even move planets!
Jennifer Warrack
What are you learning about? How does what you are learning connect with the outside world?
Right now in Mathematics we are learning about algebra.
It's easy and fun to do and helps with knowing the unknown number, and also helps in everyday life with problem solving.

Year 12 Gradua on
“Among the thousands of mes we have sat within the four walls of this hall, it is safe to say that this me, our
final me, is undoubtedly the most special. Tonight marks the closing of another chapter in our lives.. a chapter
which has taken 6 whole years to write, might I add.” Fiona Li—School Captain
“I don’t think that at the start of our high school journey, any of us would be aware of how much of an impact
our teachers would have and how much we would come to rely on them. The integral role they have played this
year is something that we cannot show enough apprecia on for. The reless effort they put in, day in and day
out, has not gone unno ced. But not only have they helped in an educa onal sense, the support they have
provided outside of the classroom is what I am extremely thankful for.” Fiona Li—School Captain
“Coming into Year 12, I urged that we do things with purpose.. The things we have achieved together as a
cohort proves that we did just that; from the performances of Music Fes val, to Presenta on Day, and even
the other night during the PCW Art Show, where I saw the amazing art pieces and design products produced
by the very girls in front of me, I am proud to have witnessed the passion and care you have shown throughout
the year. You should all be too.” Fiona Li—School Captain

Self Defence
Over the past few weeks all Year 10 students have par cipated in a review and add on to the Self Defence course we completed in Year 8.
Amelia, Gabby and Jamie from Art Of Defence Australia have joined us again to teach us some new games that test our defence skills, what we should do if we ever need to defend ourselves and also smart ways to escape. We have been reviewing and prac cing what we learnt two years ago like the palm heel strike, eye gouge and block. We were paired up and focused on chokes and strangles, which as you can imagine, was quite fun and scary! We prac ced what to do if someone came running at us. We blocked, kicked, threw palm heel strikes and ear slaps. We yelled ‘BACK OFF’ to our imaginary a ackers and ran at them with force.
This has been a really important and exci ng part of our Sport class that we have all enjoyed. I believe it is something we, as young woman, should all learn. Self defence is not only a great way to improve fitness but an important life skill. We will never forget what we have learnt over these past few weeks.
