Road Revamp Project Concludes with SuccessBahrain Ministry of Works announced its completion for the first phase of USD2.2 million Zaid Bin Omaira Revamp project extending from Buri roundabout on Wali Al Ahad Avenue to Dimistan. The revamp was done on this part of the 920 meter long road by transforming it into a double lane road on each direction, with a central reservation, side pavements and a service passageway, one of which is 200m long. Assistant undersecretary for Roads Huda Fakhro said the Ministry has also recently revamped Road 3841, by transforming it into a double 2 lane road on each direction; linking Zaid Bin Omaira Avenue to Roundabout 18 in Hamad Town, and from there to Sh. Khalifa bin Salman Highway. Fakhro said the project aims to enhance traffic safety for road users by decreasing the number of direct intersections overlooking the road. The project also aims to increase the capacity of this arterial road and therefore serve residents in the Western Area; a part of the Northern Governorate.

he Middle East region is seeing a constant progress in constructional development especially the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iran where governments are establishing a solid infrastructure base. As this constructional development would be impossible without construction equipment, this movement is intended to drive the demand on these equipment and mainly on loaders. Consequently,

world renowned companies are working with full spirit to be a part of this development, and to make a huge profit from the Middle East. Hence, companies such as Doosan, JCB, Hitachi, CNH and Caterpillar are introducing new loaders to the Middle Eastern market; many of them compliant to the region’s standards.

“… Doosan has launched

a new range of wheeled loaders for

markets in the Middle East

and Africa region”

Loaders market: Be a part of itThe construction and infrastructure activity in the Middle East has driven the construction companies to launch a new fleet of loaders. As a start, Doosan has launched a new range of wheeled loaders for markets in the Middle East and Africa region. Building on the design of the previous Mega range, the new Doosan DL250A, DL300A and DL420A wheeled loaders offer several improvements. With bucket capacities ranging from 2.5-4.5 m3, they are intended to meet a variety of material handling needs from loading and transport-ing granular material to industrial, mining and quarry-ing applications. While Doosan has introduced new loaders, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East Corporation FZE (HMEC) is working on expanding its presence in the Middle East by arranging in February 2012 an ex-hibition of construction equipment. The HSC crawler crane SCX2000A-2 is a limited edition machine and is used in Japan for earthquake and tsunami rescue op-erations. HMEC is the sole distributor for Middle East and North America region. Yet, JCB, has unveiled at the Conexpo show in Moscow its most powerful back-hoe loader ever, the range-topping 5CX. It features a Tier 2 JCB Dieselmax engine developing 88kW, a 1.3m³ shovel as standard, and Servo controls as standard with variable flow hydraulics giving fuel savings of up to 10 percent. The machine has been developed for markets – including Russia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East - where digging and loading performance require-ments are high, said Tim Burnhope, JCB’s chief innova-tion and growth officer. Moreover, the decline in the Chinese equipment sales in 2012 which resulted in a severe downturn that hit the market of mobile cranes, hydraulic excavators, and wheel loaders pushed Cater-pillar to export China-made wheel loaders and hydrau-lic excavators to markets in Africa and the Middle East.Last but not least, CNH Global N.v.’s Construction equipment net sales topped USD1 billion, increasing

4 percent on a constant currency basis as market con-ditions remained largely flat to Q1 2012 in the North American market and improved equipment availabil-ity drove higher sales in the EAME & CIS markets. New Holland Construction introduced its C series wheel loader with Tier 3 compliant engines to its key mar-kets in Africa, the Middle East, the CIS and Central Asia while Case Construction Equipment introduced its new 521F and 621F wheel loaders equipped with Tier 3 compliant engines in Africa, the Middle East, the CIS and Central Asia, completing the renewal of its range of heavy line wheel loaders in these markets. In addition, at the CTT trade show in Moscow, Russia, Case present-ed its latest range of Tier 3 compliant SR and SV skid steer and TR compact track loaders.

Following their premiere at the Intermat in Paris, the Ammann's new ARX generation of light tandem roll-ers will go into production in autumn 2012. The com-pany’s completely remodeled double vibratory rollers are specifically designed to compact asphalt and sub-strates on smaller and medium-sized building sites. The new ARX series comprises 13 different models in weight categories from 1.5 to 4.8 tons, with work-ing widths from 820 to 1380 mm. The new ARX series clearly displays the hallmarks of Ammann's products: quality, safety and optimal performance. All the ARX models feature tried-and-tested technolo-gies, such as the high-performance vibration system that has proven its merits over the years; another example is the newly designed and highly efficient hy-draulic system, which is powered by cutting-edge Yan-mar diesel engine technology to guarantee maximum reliability, economical consumption and compliance with the strict emission requirements in Europe and the US. The new hydraulic concept greatly increases the efficiency of the powertrain, enabling the diesel engine to be operated at significantly lower speeds –

equipment, HEILIT+WOERNER Bau GmbH in Munich is the favorite in the sector for concrete road surfaces. Several million square meters of concrete pavement are built every year in Germany alone. SENNEBOGEN supplied a SR 25T as a carrier vehicle for a new road base finisher. The multifunctional device is now used with a paving screed for bound and unbound road bases and combines several work steps in one. The material can be distributed precisely over large areas via the boom. Hydraulically bound and unbound road bases are laid in the correct position and height with a paving screed up to 8 meters in width and equipped with compacting plates. Complex technology ensures precise positioning right down to the exact millime-ter. For the driver, this means simply distributing the material using the scoops. The drive and leveling func-tions run automatically. The paving screed is leveled via additional hydraulic cylinders mounted on the undercarriage. The position and height of the ma-chine can be controlled precisely down to the exact millimeter based on a digital terrain model and with tachymetric positioning. This means that the build-ing material is heaped up to a width of eight meters, straightened, leveled and compressed at the same time in one work step.

which in turn has the effect of reducing fuel consump-tion and engine noise.

Launch of fifth generation CA rollers continues with versatile mid-size models

Aristaria S.L’s operators like to use volvo machines because they feel safe in them, and safety comes first

Dynapac Launches CA Mid-Size Rollers

A Blast from the Past

Dynapac’s introduction of its revolutionary fifth gen-eration of single drum vibratory rollers was enthusias-tically received. Having begun with the larger CA5000, CA6000 and CA6500 models, the company now pre-sents its mid-size range, CA2500, CA2800, CA3500 and CA4000, and their variants. With the same innovative

There was a time, 60 million years ago, when prehistor-ic life roamed the Aristaria limestone quarry in Valencia on the east coast of Spain. The quarry in Ribarroja del Turia in Valencia holds 30 million tons of limestone, spreading over approximately 10 miles. Access roads circle around each layer of the quarry until you reach the top and can peer down into the abyss. Aristaria S.L took over the quarry in 1991 and is one of the 25 companies owned by the aggregates giant, Cyes, who in total employs 1,400 workers across its quarrying net-work. So far this year, half a million tons of limestone has been extracted but its production peak is a whop-ping two million tons every year.

Development is ‘astonishing’Aristaria uses three different series of volvo wheel loaders to transport and move its stone, eight hours a day, six days a week – an L250G, L330E and two L350Fs. Since the L250G was delivered in December, it has clocked 687 hours and its operator couldn’t be happier. “After going from the L330E to the L350F I saw a revo-lutionary step at Volvo CE,” says Rafa Pardo, operator at the site. “It’s amazing how a more powerful machine can save us fuel – our L350F, bought in 2009, has 8,100 hours on the clock and still looks new. The develop-

thinking and unique features as the larger models, these versatile machines represent a minor revolution in terms of serviceability due to their cross-mounted engines. Other time and money saving features are optimized amplitude for superior compaction per-formance and Active Bouncing Control that prevents damage to the machine and over-compaction. The advantages don’t end there. Add even higher operator comfort and drastically reduced noise levels and fuel consumption, and the result is a line of state-of-the-art single drum soil compactors that will make a major contribution to cutting costs and raising productivity for customers worldwide. With static linear loads ranging from 25 - 45 kg/cm, the mid-size CA rollers are ideal for compacting a range of materials, from sand and gravel to rockfill. Amplitude of 1.8 - 2 mm for the CA3500 and CA4000 models allows rockfill to be compacted in 1.25 – 1.5 meter layers. The better depth effect results in higher volume capacity and less passes to reach compaction specifications, thus saving fuel and reducing the cost per compacted cubic meter. Environmental impact is also lower. The Dynapac ‘Silent Weights’ eccentric con-cept is an option that enhances compaction perfor-mance even further.

ment between these two machines is astonishing – and then the L250G comes along and is even better.” The company previously owned a Volvo L180, which was 16 years old and had 36,000 hours on the clock, amazingly, with the original Volvo bucket still intact. This machine was traded in for a newer Volvo, but even at the end it was still able to lift 7,000 tons in 10 work-ing hours. Rafa has been operating Volvo machines since 1989 and worked at the quarry for 13 years.

“Majority of home up-

grade proj-ects center upon […]

bathrooms, driving the

demand for fittings and

fixtures”

With long-term fundamentals for new home construc-tion in developed markets still remaining weak, global plumbing fitting and fixtures market is expected to take time to post the much awaited robust growth. Current-ly the market is challenged by flat housing conditions in North America and difficult economic environment in Europe. As the economy is not expected to be robust in the near term, major share of the market revenues, particularly in North America would continue to be generated from repair and remodeling activity, added GIA in its report. Investment on high value items would remain deferred till the industry witnesses a marked improvement in employment levels, consumer confi-dence, and housing prices. Majority of home upgrade projects center upon kitchens and bathrooms, driving the demand for fittings and fixtures of a wide array. In Europe, the economic slowdown amidst the sovereign debt crisis continues to take its toll on the construction market. As the region would take time to emerge from its vicious cycle of debt and precipitating business con-fidence, near-to-medium term growth in the construc-tion industry is expected to remain modest. As stated by GIA’s report on Plumbing Fittings and Fix-tures, Asia-Pacific represents the largest regional mar-ket. The region is forecast to advance at the fastest pace driven by increased non-residential and residential construction activity in the major economies of China and India, according to the same report. Growth in the Chinese construction industry is expected to gain fur-ther momentum with local government announcing subsidies to invigorate home sales. Other regions that are expected to post large gains include Latin America and the Middle East.Currently companies are gearing up to face the head-winds of economic uncertainty with rationalization moves such as business consolidation, plant closures, renewed focus on strengthening brand positions, in-troduction of new products at affordable costs, e-busi-ness, improvement in cost structure and productivity. Another strategy is the geographic expansion of prod-uct lines in emerging markets by setting up of branch

offices in these regions. The report added that environ-mental awareness is further pepping up the demand for water and energy efficient products. For instance, certain regions have witnessed higher demand for dual flush toilets as well as high efficiency showers on ac-count of the requirement to comply with water conser-vation rules. Fashion and styling aspects continue to remain the prominent market propellants, particularly in the aftermarket segment. By product group, Plumbing Fixtures accounts major share of the global market. Particularly, sophisticated fixtures would become increasingly popular with ur-ban population as their disposable incomes rise and their desire for luxurious bathrooms becomes stron-ger. In the long term, demand for Plumbing Fittings is expected to be relatively stronger led by product seg-ments including sink fittings and single lever fittings, according to GIA. Expansion of sanitation networks and water supply to rural areas will throw new market op-portunities from the emerging markets.

he global market for Plumbing Fittings and Fixtures is projected to reach USD54.5 billion by the year 2017, according to a new report release by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. (GIA). Amidst the prevailing uncertain economic climate, near to medium term growth in the market is not expected to be spectacular, but steady. However, long term growth is expected to be strong, driven by revival of economic

fundamentals, resurgence in residential construction, improved growth in sanitation and fresh water infrastructure, product innovations, and increased consumer involvement in home refurbishments.

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products announced that Panasonic Corporation Eco Solutions Company has adopted biobased resins made with Susterra® Pro-panediol for their new line of kitchen and bathroom systems. The new integrated kitchen system, “Living Station,” and bathroom system, “Cococino,” both use biobased resins made with Susterra® and are now available commercially through Panasonic Corpora-tion Eco Solutions Company. The new kitchen and bathroom systems were de-veloped using Panasonic’s unique technology of compounding plant-derived and petroleum-derived resins. The resins based on plant-derived, Susterra® are used to manufacture the kitchen countertops in the “Living Station” product line and the bathroom ceil-ings in the “Cococino” product line. For the first time in the Asia Pacific region, biobased resins were adopted as the building material for wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. The biobased materials also are used for the wash basins and toilets in the Panasonic product line. “The quality require-ment for wet area system materials is very high,” com-mented Kazumasa Rokushima, director of the General Technology & Products Development Center, Housing Systems Business Group at the Panasonic Eco Solu-

prehensive range of shower trays, including a shower that fits flush with the floor. However, it also offers intelligent solutions for taking a guilt-free bath, for example, with a length of 160 cm, the bathtubs in the Starck and D-Code ranges have a comparatively low filling volume. And, thanks to its innovative, ergo-nomic and sophisticated trapezoidal shape, the Paiova bathtub offers maximum bathing comfort with mini-mum water consumption.Numerous product innovations from the company show that sustainability in the bathroom goes far be-yond simply saving water. For years, wherever it makes ecological sense, Duravit has been using LED light-ing that generates power savings of up to 80 percent compared with halogen lights. Only state-of-the-art LEDs and energy-saving lights are used to illuminate Duravit bathroom furniture. The Duravit whirl sys-tems for whirltubs and pools now feature a new fan that generates power savings of up to 40 percent, at the same time as reducing the whirl volume by 9 dB, which corresponds to a noise reduction of almost 50 percent. Materials and surfaces with new, sustainable properties have been developed, for example, Dura-Ceram special ceramic, an extra robust and durable material used in kitchen sinks.

Middle East Excavators’ Market:Great Potential

2010 saw China leading the growth The global excavator market experienced significant decline in 2008 and 2009 mainly due to economic downturn in the matured markets like the US and Eu-rope. In 2010, the global excavator market registered growth compared to the previous year, which can be attributed to the growth in the emerging countries like China and India, according to a new report published by Koncept Analytics. In 2010, China recorded significant growth in the real estate industry, which had a positive effect on the excavator market in China. In 2010, China accounted for the highest excavator sales compared to other countries. Within the Chinese excavator market, the sales of excavators with moderate operating capac-ity (20-30 tons) were higher compared to the other cat-egories of excavators. The excavator sales in East China were comparatively higher than the other parts of Chi-na in 2010. The excavator market in North America and Europe experienced declining sales in 2008 and 2009. However, in 2010, the market in North America, Europe and other countries like China, India, Africa, and Middle East registered growth, added the report. In 2010, Cat-erpillar led the crawler excavator market in China. The other major players in the worldwide excavator market are Komatsu, Liebherr, and Hitachi.

Moving to Middle East in 2012In 2011, the global sales volume of excavators approxi-mated 458,000 units, of which the sales volume in Chi-nese market enjoyed the lion’s share of 38.8 percent and reached 178,000 units, due to the largest number of infrastructure projects, according to a report pub-lished by ResearchInChina. From January to April of 2012, 28 major Chinese excavator manufacturers sold a total of 59,457 excavators, down 42.22 percent YoY, while the export volume surged 100.24 percent YoY to 2,547 units. The first quarter of every year is the peak time for the commencement of infrastructure projects and is also the golden period for excavator sales.Despite the sharp decline in Chinese market, the ex-

he global excavator market is a major segment of the worldwide construction industry. The excavator market has significant growth opportunity in near future as the world economy is recovering rapidly and worldwide construction industry is resuming its growth trajectory. Moreover, the Middle Eastern excavator market is expected to be buoyant as major construction companies are drawing

attention into this region where various large-scale construction projects are yet to be developed across Abu Dhabi and the Middle East region.

T

cavator sales outside of China showed robust perfor-mance, especially in developed economies such as the U.S., Japan, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, added the report. Moreover, the sharp decline in the Chinese excavator market led many companies to fo-cus on the Middle-Eastern market. Cat, for example, has exported its China-made machines to the Middle East because the market is very hot right now. It has responded to a decline in orders in China by using fac-tories in the country to fulfill orders in other markets including the Middle East and Africa in particular. Moving on, energy saving technology in the excava-tor market is expected to play a significant role in the future. Cost optimization and understanding the cus-tomer’s need and industry trends are the biggest chal-lenges to the excavator producers.

Behind Every Great Work There Is an Mb Crusher Bucket

An all-Brazilian challenge for the Italian Company MB, leader in the earthmoving and construction industry: its products have been in use for several months at var-ious sites across the country. Thanks to a partnership with Grupo Monte Sinai Locação Ltda, MB's Crusher Buckets and Screening Buckets have used for the con-struction of the Arena Pernambuco stadium ahead of the 2014 Brazilian World Cup. It all began in 2009 with initial contact between the Group owners, Abinael Ma-noel and Enoque Manoel De Souza and MB Area Manag-er for Brazil, Carlotta Mettifogo. “We purchased the first BF90.3 in May 2011 – the De Souzas explained – and used it for recycling demolished material at the “Atlan-tico Sul” shipyard in the Port of Suape (Pernambuco). We then took the MB Crusher Bucket to the “Shopping Rio Mar” site to crush inert material from the demoli-tion of an old factory, and this material was subse-quently reused at the same site”. “We are really pleased with the purchase - the owners confirmed - so much that in January 2012 we bought another model from the range, the BF120.4, and then in March 2012, the Screening Bucket MBS-18, one of the company's new-est products”.Once again, MB Crusher Buckets and products have become important assets in worldwide events. Back in 2010, MB Crusher Buckets were used to build the Soc-cer City Stadium ahead of the South African World Cup. After South Africa came Brazil and its Arena Pernambu-

co, the construction of which was entrusted to the na-tional giant “Construtora Norberto Odebrecht”. It was Odebrecht to contact Grupo Monte Sinai for the hire of its MB Crusher Buckets. Significant investment in re-search has allowed the Vicenza-based company, world leader of its sector, to produce indispensable and cut-ting-edge buckets with unparalleled performance. It is precisely for this reason that MB products are chosen by companies from across the globe who are working on projects on an international scale. These projects confirm the enormous flexibility of MB Buckets, which have become ruler of this market in just a few years. These customers confirm the versatility of MB prod-ucts. “With the MB Crusher Bucket - Mr. De Souza of Bra-zil said - the great advantage has been that of saving on the cost of material: instead of buying it from third parties, we used material that came straight from the site, from the demolished construction or from the site ground itself. This has allowed us to make significant savings in terms of material, resources, our time and the time of the customer who commissioned the work. This show of “significant savings” has led to other com-missions at the same sites as well as conveying a sense of solid professionalism to our customers. It is worth mentioning that we use the MB Crusher Bucket for an average of 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. On top of all this, no special maintenance is required, keeping costs low compared to mobile or fixed crushers”.

The Herrenknecht Earth Pressure Balance Shield required just under twelve months to build the 2.413-meter tunnel

First Tunnel Tube Completed in Record FormatDuring the course of extending the A1 in Italy, a cur-rently busy section between Bologna and Florence is being extended to include a new alternative route. One

feature of this route is the Sparvo Tunnel under con-struction since August 2011 which represents a new re-cord in mechanized tunneling in terms of size as it has a boring diameter of 15.615 meters and comprises two parallel tubes 2.5 kilometers in length. The excavation task is regarded as the most demand-ing part of the overall project, not only on account of its sheer size but also because of the prevailing geologi-cal conditions. In order to achieve the requisite safety and speed during construction, the Italian client opted to use mechanized tunneling technology. To this aim, Toto Costruzioni Generali S.p.A. commissioned Her-renknecht AG with building a tunnel boring machine in 2010. With the aid of the 4,300-tonand 130-meter Herrenknecht Earth Pressure Balance Shield equipped with 12,000 Kilowatt drive power, Toto has now com-pleted the first tube. Toto reported to the media after the initial breakthrough: "A top advance rate of 22 me-ters per day has confirmed the superiority of mecha-nized tunneling when compared to conventional tech-nology." This process involved the removal of 4,215 cu-bic meters of soil – a major challenge for site manage-ment. Over the next few months, the Martina TBM will be turned around for the second tube which is spaced 20 meters away.

“Sudden growth has

created new demand for

lifting and handling

equipment”

Saudi Arabian market: A continuous growthThe Middle East region is filled with opportunity. Entre-preneurs and investors are interested in several major projects in the region that include the: USD 27 billion Saadiyat Island in the UAE; USD 11 billion Etihad Rail in the UAE; USD 91 billion 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qa-tar; USD 40 billion Sundair City Development in Saudi Arabia; and many more. This significant interest in the region’s construction development has propelled the demand on lifting and handling equipment especially in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Arabian market has one of the most competitive and dynamic equipment sup-ply markets. Its lifting and handling equipment mar-ket experienced a 694 percent increase over the 2000-2011 review period, in accordance with the booming construction industry, according to a new report pub-lished by Euromonitor International. The surge in oil prices, in tandem with high population growth, has led to a multi-billion dollar building frenzy in Saudi Ara-bia. Sudden growth has created new demand for lift-ing and handling equipment. The largest proportion of spending went to purchases for investment purposes, which accounted for an 89 percent share of the mar-ket in 2011. Purchases by households were significantly lower, accounting for only 9 percent of total purchases. After the first half of 2011, total construction contracts for the first half amounted to USD22.4 billion. Due to the terrain on which the lifting equipment has to op-erate, rough terrain cranes are traditionally the tool of choice for construction companies in Saudi Arabia. Such cranes are much faster and more versatile on sand. However, other cranes are also in demand, with 50 ton to 80 ton machines across the board much sought af-ter. Moreover, further demand is expected from the new development of the King Abdullah Industrial City in Western Saudi Arabia.

China: The hub of lifting equipmentChina which is seeing a rapid development of its infra-structure construction has seen a rapid development of its crane market and led China to become a global crane market. The rapid development of the crane, is to

he Middle East is a developing region where various large-scale construction projects are yet to be developed especially in the UAE and in Saudi Arabia. The presence of these numerous investment opportunities has attracted several leading manufacturers, contractors and investors who express significant interest in the region’s construction sector. However, these projects will drive forward the demand

on the construction equipment and machinery and mainly the lifting and handling equipment. The Saudi Arabian market for lifting and handling equipment appears a clear winner of this construction boom where it registered a 694 percent increasesin its lifting equipment market.

According to an analysis, in recent years, especially strong development in the energy industry in China, driven by continued healthy development of China's crane industry, but also led to a large number of great strength of the hoisting equip-ment construction enterprise. China lifting industry has emerged in the group with considerable scale and strong competitiveness of large-scale lifting equip-ment companies; these lifting equipment manufactur-ers, and overseas expansion with the crane market in China is also actively into foreign markets.

Manitowoc’s latest innovation to help customers get the most out of their investment is a Boom Raise

New Boom Raise System for Manitowoc 16000 CraneSystem (BRS) for the 400 ton Manitowoc 16000 Wind Attachment. The system is designed to raise longer Wind Attachment boom lengths that are needed to install nacelles on 100 m wind turbine towers without the aid of an assist crane. The Boom Raise System al-lows end users to lift up to 107 meters of Wind Attach-ment Boom plus 7.6 meters of Extended Upper Boom Point. Previously, customers were limited to 92 meters plus the Extended Upper Boom Point. The maximum capacity with 107 meters of boom plus 7.6 meters of EUBP at a 20 meters operating radius is 87.9 tons. The Boom Raise System utilizes a large hydraulic cyl-inder housed in a special 3 meter boom insert section that attaches to the boom butt. The boom raising cyl-inder works in conjunction with the boom hoist by ex-erting an upward force on the boom. This is achieved by extending the cylinder downward onto prepared ground/matting. Once the boom angle is 38 degrees, the boom hoist fully takes over. “The Boom Raise System provides the extra boost needed to raise the boom until the standard boom hoist system fully takes over,” said Jerry Maloney, global product director at Manitowoc Cranes. "Our goal in developing the boom raise system was to eliminate the need for investment in either a larger capacity crane or a second support crane to lift heavier booms on the job," he added. New Boom Raise System enhances versatility of Manitowoc 16000 crawler crane

“The seven major pro-ducers […]

cover 77 percent of

world quar-ry output”

Data collated in the Report indicated that output in 2011 came to around 240 million tons gross of off-cuts and processing waste for consumption equal to 1.265 billion equivalent square meters referred to the conventional thickness of 2 cm. This positive result, in global terms, was largely achieved thanks to Asian countries - with China in first place, with almost one-third of world production and over 27 percent of trade, as stated in the same report. The seven major produc-ers (in order: China, India, Iran, Turkey, Brazil, Italy and Spain) cover 77 percent of world quarry output, one point higher than the figure for 2010 and eight points for 2005, thereby confirming the historical trend to-wards progressive concentration, that also generally embraces processing and distribution stages. The most important role in the context of globalization was played once again by trade, involving a total of 49.5 million tons: taking into account unhewn and pro-cessed material on an equal basis, these volumes come to about 730 million square meters. The share for un-processed material grew further, confirming the trend towards a strategic modification that no longer focuses on finished products. The figures highlight another sig-nificant reality in the stone industry: an absolute ma-jority of world consumption - just under three-fifths - concerns materials quarried and often processed in countries other than the country of installation, added the report. As regards China, it should be added that export vol-umes, very largely comprising finished products, came to 13.5 million tons, with priority and substantially mo-nopoly positions in South Korea and Japan, as well as a strong presence in the United States and the European Union. In turn, the value of shipments from China post-ed a new record, with export turnover worth five billion dollars and growth of 22.2.Differential analysis by country confirms that dynam-ics in the stone industry are governed by extremely variable processes: while increases were achieved by China and to a lesser extent by other Asian producers, even Europe saw appreciable recoveries such as those involving trade for Greece, Spain and Portugal, where stone demonstrated a specific capacity to counteract

he global balance sheet for the stone industry in 2011 posted an increase of 4 percent by volume for quarry production and an increase of 2.2 percent in import-export volumes .These results are revealed in the XXIII World Stone Industry Report, developed once again by Carlo Montani - one of the foremost experts in the field - and which was premiered at Marmomacc 2012. T

the effects of still very difficult short-term economic prospects in these countries. The report added that among the leading stone indus-try countries, Italy once again performed poorly, clos-ing 2011 with a downturn in export quantities - net of by-products - equal to 2.6 percent; this decrease wors-ens to 9.4 percent in the four-year period. The phenom-enon has been contained thanks to unhewn material that now comprises 47.7 percent of total shipments abroad. Similarly, Italian imports fell back by 4 percent, confirming the major difficulties in the processing sec-tor and the added value crisis still very evident despite growth in world demand. The machinery and capi-tal goods sector performed better: Italian exports of marble and natural stone processing machinery came to roughly 830 thousand tons with annual turnover of around USD871 million, with respective increases of 21.1 percent and 10 percent.

Precise, regular elements, expertly laid out in a me-ticulous interlocking game: this is the soul of Antolini’s Woodstone Collection, a line that turns symmetry and elegance into its strengths. Long strips can be matched up and put together in different combina-tions to recreate and reinvent feelings that have long been considered the exclusive prerogative of parquet. Not just simple plugs, but solutions that make natural stone the very best material for decorating environ-ments with style and sophistication. Stones from the Woodstone Collection are particularly suited for cover-ing flooring fitted with heating systems as they con-duct heat better than traditional materials. The strips can be easily combined with other types of coverings and are available in various finishes and multiple di-mensions: 12 cm wide, approximately 50 to 100 cm long, and with a 15/20 mm calibrated thickness.Antolini Luigi & C. is rooted in over 50 years of ex-perience. “These GPR systems not only detect

buried services but also have to capacity to

detect voids, […] and con-

struction features”

ver since the explosion in development of Ground Probing Radar (GPR) systems in the 1990s the technology has become an increasingly integral part of the utility surveyor’s toolkit. By collecting measurements using a single or dual channel GPR system, then comparing detected targets to those found with other technologies, a reasonable picture of the subsurface can be created. To achieve the best

possible result, the interval between collected GPR measurements is decreased; however, the net effect of this is to increase the time required and subsequently the cost involved to complete a survey. The resulting data is still subject to an ‘Interpretation’ which is still heavily reliant on the surveyor’s knowledge of the site, the technology and its capabilities.

E

The answer is to deploy multiple antennas simultane-ously in the form of an array which allows enough data to be collected to form an actual image of the sub-surface, rather than an interpretation of one. Several manufacturers realized this some years ago and began developing the GPR array technology based systems. Once the hardware reached a satisfactory level of evo-lution the focus then turned towards the software as given the huge volumes of data involved, this then be-came the bottleneck. The drive towards perfecting this approach became ever more focused as the industry began to require more accuracy and reliability in the survey information that was being procured.Having spent many years focusing on these issues, Ma-cleod Simmonds Ltd (MSL) of Portsmouth, UK, now of-fers a GPR consultancy that provides both a survey ser-vice and/or a software package that takes the output from multi-antenna surveys to a whole new dimension.

Survey CapabilityWith over a decade of experience in the GPR survey field, staff at MSL can provide survey capability for al-most any type of terrain, application or location that end users might require. For the more usual survey location i.e along an existing roadway or smooth sur-face terrain, MSL has its Carriageway System. Based on a multi-antenna set up from Italian GPR manufacturer IDS, the unit has 40 individual GPR channels operating at 200 Mhz and 600 Mhz (the higher the frequency the higher the resolution but to a shallower depth), which will provide a grid resolution of as little as 6 cm x 6 cm. The data is collected by traversing the array across the survey site at about 5 mph with the GPR system towed by a suitable vehicle. Up to 10,000 m2 of coverage per site shift can be achieved using this system. Similarly, but for more difficult terrain, MSL has its Rough Ground System. This unit can be pulled across

the survey site using either a quad bike or 4x4 vehicle. For narrower locations or where vehicle access is not possible MSL also has its Footpath and “Fill in” System. This unit has two operating modes. First the 200 Mhz system has 8 channels and provides a 12 cm GPR grid resolution. Second the 600 Mhz system has 24 chan-nels and a 4 cm GPR grid resolution. These GPR systems not only detect buried services but also have to capacity to detect voids, anomalies, struc-tures and construction features. They can also be uti-lized for archaeological as well as construction surveys.

Software Processing & OutputAccording to Craig Simmonds FCInstCES, MSL’s Senior GPR Consultant, what makes the service offered by MSL different from anyone else in the GPR market to-day is the unique hardware systems together with the software that has been developed in-house by the company to provide the various output options sought by modern engineers.Once data has been collected by the survey equip-ment, it is transferred into the software system. Sum-marizing what the software generates in simple terms, it generates a plan image of the survey site. This plan is multi-layered in that plans of the site at different depths can be seen from the surface to the maximum depth of penetration. Panning through these layers on screen highlights not only where utilities structures or other buried items lay within the substructure of the ground and along what route they run but also what depth range they cover. For installations such as large diameter pipes for instance this could be a significant factor depending on what construction operations etc will follow the survey operation.

A view of the futureWith digital imaging of surface structures becoming an increasing requirement amongst the construction fraternity, MSL is also looking at how a combination of both surface and subsurface structures and networks could be established and how the relationship be-tween them might be imaged for the use of construc-tion engineers of all fields not just the utility sector.By marrying high resolution multi-camera filming tech-niques with multi-laser scanning capability, the inten-tion is to create a view not just of the surface structures along a survey route but also to be able to highlight ‘terrain’ variations such as road humps or troughs or other anomalies. By completing a GPR multi-channel survey at the same time along the same route, data from both surveys can be combined to show how the surface and underground environments fit together

and how they interact. Output can again be exported for display purposes to Cad systems.Whilst this latter technique, known as ‘Mobile Map-ping’ or ‘Surface Based Lidar’ which takes its position-al data via Inertia GPS, is still in development, it just goes to show the future potential that is becoming a reality with the use of multi-channel array GPR survey systems.Commenting on this potential Craig Simmonds said: “It has taken many years to get to the point where our equipment and, in particular, our software has the ca-pacity to achieve the levels of output now offered. Yet we still view this as only part of the future potential for our systems. We are actively working towards a full BIM (Building Information Modeling) integration as part of our standard output options and continue to look at new output criteria according to our customers’ needs. Our main focus is to provide data that will make un-derstanding of what lies beneath our feet and the rela-tionship between the visible and hidden environments much easier to fully understand. .”

“… waterproof-ing mem-

branes have fast become

a vital specifi-cation choice at major con-

struction proj-ects”

n concrete construction it‘s crucial to get things right from the bottom up ,never more so than when protecting buildings from the corrosive effects of sea water .Although a durable and robust building material ,concrete can still be severely compromised when attacked by sulphates and chlorides .And with an estimated 75 percent of building failures worldwide attributed to water ingress ,Grace

Construction Products believes the solution is simple – eliminate water to eliminate the problem. With sea water making up 70 percent of the earth’s surface, structures will always need to be built near to the coast or more recently in direct contact with sea water. As a result, proven high performance waterproofing membranes have fast become a vital specification choice at major construction projects worldwide. Without them, concrete remains vulnerable to the four root causes of structural deterioration – groundwater, climate, sulphates and chlorides.

I

Causes of deterioration Concrete which is directly or indirectly exposed to sea water will deteriorate due to combined contamination from groundwater and aggressive climatic conditions, as well as sulphate attack and chloride induced corro-sion. A complex cocktail of chemicals and sea water in-creases concrete’s permeability to make it more suscep-tible to further attack whilst also reducing its protection from the additional sources of deterioration.Following an initial stage of deterioration, the compro-mised concrete will then provide further paths of con-tamination – in the form of cracks and fractures. No mat-ter how small these penetrations, contaminant ingress will be further accelerated to jeopardize the concrete’s integrity and dramatically reduce its service life.Rebar corrosion is also an extremely common form of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures, with chloride ingress the most frequent cause. As chloride builds up on the concrete surface, through airborne salts or below-ground chlorides and sulphates, it penetrates by diffusion. In hotter countries, this process is even quicker as every +10°C doubles the rate of diffusion.

Although the key requirement in basement waterproof-ing is simply to keep water out, this can cause subse-quent problems if sea water is a factor. With a dry inter-nal environment and an external environment that re-mains wet, capillary action increases the risk of sulphate attack. Due to groundwater sulphates refreshing the reactionary process, concrete composition and micro-structure changes cause extensive cracking, expansion and loss of bond between the cement paste and aggre-gate, leading to an overall loss of concrete strength.Although continuous developments and innovations in concrete production have created an improved re-sistance to sea water, without a membrane solution the concrete will never be immune from its harmful ef-fects. Concrete can only be fully protected if water in-filtration is prevented entirely – with the waterproofing membrane providing a physical barrier to sea water corrosion before it can begin.

mance and durability by providing constant protec-tion from sulphate, chloride and water ingress. The ideal waterproofing solution stops water penetra-tion and guards against any future failure. Get the specification right first time and water ingress can be prevented with one relatively simple application. For over half a century, Grace Construction Products has provided solutions to many of the most challeng-ing waterproofing projects. Designed with synthetic adhesive layers combined with a robust HDPE film, Grace’s Preprufe® waterproofing system provides a permanent physical barrier to protect the concrete from the salt and sulphates found in the sea, ground and coastal environment. Unlike other waterproof-ing solutions, Preprufe® ensures the structure re-mains unaffected by salt and sulphate attack even if concentration levels change. Preprufe® also elimi-nates the issue of water migration – water tracking between the membrane and structure – a problem well recognized by industry experts. Once a conven-tional membrane is breached the whole structure is vulnerable, so when a leak becomes visible it is often a considerable distance from the actual source. This makes leak remediation haphazard and expensive, and the concrete will have been exposed to salt wa-ter for some time before the leak is seen and repaired and lasting damage may already have been done. Conventional membranes are often sealed to the wrong surface such as mud slabs or blinding, lead-ing to water migration as a result of membrane dis-continuity. Grace’s patented Advanced Bond Tech-nology™ enables concrete to aggressively adhere to Preprufe®, forming a unique, continuous and in-timate seal which prevents any water migration and substantially reduces the risk of leaks. No other sys-tem on the market protects a substructure from the harmful effects of water, vapor and gas more effec-tively than Preprufe®. It can be applied on wet con-crete and is immediately trafficable after installation without protective layers, which makes for fast and easy application. In fact, when compared to tradi-tional loose-laid PVC systems, Preprufe® is more than five times quicker – with approximately 500m2 laid in one day compared to 60-100m2 of PVC over the same time period.

Exhibitions in waterproofingIn the Middle East, the climate and corrosive salt en-vironment presented a series of project challenges during construction of the Museum of Islamic Art. Constructed on reclaimed land just 60 meters from Qatar’s Doha Corniche and with foundations resting below the water table, highly aggressive chloride and sulphate conditions would have quickly deterio-rated the concrete and significantly reduced its life cycle. nergy storage facilities are indispensable for a turnaround in energy production, as they add predictability to the fluctuations of eco-power. The German government has therefore started to sponsor the development and launch of storage technologies. To set up manu-facturing facilities, it is helpful to use the expertise of solar equipment manufacturers.E

“… the German

government launched

a gas store offensive with the

emphasis on four major

spheres”

Any conversion to renewables is hard work. The primary requirement of eco-power is new networks, but it also needs gas stores which can cushion fluctuations in the production of solar and wind power. In Stuttgart the world’s first methane storage system will soon be con-nected to the network, based on electric power that gen-erates storable methane. The project is run by a company called Solarfuel together with the Centre for Solar En-ergy and Hydrogen Research in Baden-Württemberg (ZSW). With 250 kilowatts of power, the system will gen-erate 300 cubic meters per day. The gas is to be fed into the existing gas grid which supplies heating facilities, power plants and petrol stations. “This technology can be an important module in our future energy supply, as it allows the development of enormous storage capaci-ties,” says ZSW project engineer Andreas Brinner. German gas pipes and subterranean caverns can hold a gas vol-ume with an energy content of 200 terawatt hours. This is roughly one third of Germany’s total energy consump-tion per year.Without long-term gas stores it will be difficult to make the most of renewable sources in the future: Both solar and wind energies depend on the weather, on the sea-sons and on the time of day. The bigger its share in the electric power output, the greater the fluctuations of the

available electricity. Gas stores can accommodate the surplus and make it available again when there is a need. However, so-called power-to-gas facilities are only one option of storing eco-power. In July, the German govern-ment launched a gas store offensive with the emphasis on four major spheres. Over the next few years 60 proj-ects will receive state sponsorship in the areas of wind-hydro systems – which includes power-to-gas facilities – as well as batteries in distribution grids, energy system analysis and thermal gas stores. How much money will be available has not been decided yet. The German Min-istry of the Environment says that the approval proce-dure for the project is still in progress.

Eco-power to gasHowever, the gas storage offensive has been defined very clearly. One major focus is on electrolysis research. If, say, a solar park generates too much electricity, then the surplus can be redirected into electrolyzers where the electric power splits water into oxygen and hydro-gen. The latter can be used directly as fuel for hybrid or fuel cell vehicles or, as in Stuttgart, it can be synthesized into methane with carbon dioxide. Methane can then be stored very conveniently in the existing gas grid.Within the next two or three years Solarfuel will be mar-

keting such systems as small units with an output of 10 to 20 megawatts. “They can be used locally near solar and wind turbine locations,” says Solarfuel engineer Stefan Rieke. At the same time the relevant system components are continually being improved by the industry. Siemens, for instance, is currently developing innovative electro-lyzers which are said to harmonize particularly well with renewable energies. They center around a special mem-brane with permeability for minute particles – the kind of membrane that is also used in fuel cell technology. “Conventional electrolyzers take minutes to respond to changes in the electric power supply, while a membrane model does so within milliseconds,” says Manfred Waid-haus, an engineer in Siemens’ Water Electrolytes Division. Two pilot plants are due to be commissioned this year. In 2015, Siemens wants to market two-megawatt systems and in 2020 it may well be able to deliver 250-megawatt systems. Eventually, the biggest units should transform the power of 100 large solar and wind power parks into hydrogen. However, to achieve a turnaround in energy production, large long-term gas stores by themselves are not enough. To ease the burden on local grids, it is equally important to have smaller gas stores, so that more eco-power can be used directly at the place of production. Eisenhuth, a company which specializes in fuel cells, and the Techni-cal University of Clausthal have therefore developed new materials for so-called redox flow batteries. It is a battery that transforms electrical into chemical energy and then stores it in tanks. “Its major benefit is its energy density which is similar to the density in a proven lead battery, al-though it lasts 10 times longer,” says Christopher Hebling, Head of Energy Technology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE).

The rise of lithium-ion batteriesOne alternative to lead and redox-flow batteries is to use lithium-ion batteries. They can store a large amount of energy within a small amount of volume, while also hav-ing a cycle stability that enables them to last for up to 20 years. Some solar companies are therefore already com-bining these small power bundles with their modules, so that solar operators can have a higher level of in-house consumption. This is making in-house consumption in-creasingly lucrative. Lithium-ion batteries for domestic use are still quite ex-pensive and would therefore nullify any savings that might be made. According to ISE researcher Hebling, a stored kilowatt hour of solar power currently costs about 40 cents. Half of this goes into storage. Nevertheless, He-bling is confident that, thanks to technical progress and

Battery for the basement: Lithium-ion batteries can store surplus solar power & in-crease in-house consumption in domestic use

an increase in production, the cost of storage can be halved, to 10 cents, over the next three to four years. The hope that there will soon be a breakthrough for lith-ium-ion batteries is not unfounded, as a number of well-known battery manufacturers are currently planning to work on the development of solar power technology and to launch suitable mass products. It is also an opportu-nity for solar equipment manufacturers to apply their ex-pertise in making cells and modules for the production of batteries. “At the moment only small batteries are made for use in portable electronic devices, i.e. mobile phones and laptops. However, high-performance applications – such as energy storage facilities – would require large batteries. This is opening up an almost totally new terri-tory for newcomers,” says Thilo Brodtmann, manager of the vDMA division Robotics & Automation. In particu-lar, he believes that there is still a lot of work to do in the automation of battery plants.

It is a milestone that employees at WACKER’s plant in Nünchritz, Germany, are especially proud of: the Munich-based chemical group has produced half a billion cartridges of adhesives and sealants at the site since production startup in 1998. The chemical plant in Nünchritz has a long tradition. “It was here that silicone chemis-try came of age,” says Uwe Scheim, head of seal-ants research & development in Nünchritz. “After the Müller-Rochow synthesis was developed, the inventor Richard Müller, who was born in nearby Dresden, went on to scale up production of sili-cones from laboratory to industrial quantities.” The Nünchritz plant is one of the first fully inte-grated silicone sealants sites in the world. Here, adhesives and sealants are made from start to finish, from grinding the metallurgical-grade silicon through to packaging, and, if requested, delivery in labeled cartridges. In addition to stan-dard sealants, the product portfolio includes spe-cial fire-resistant and food-contact grades as well as silicone hybrids based on innovative and user-friendly alpha-silane technology. Besides Nün-chritz, WACKER also manufactures silicone adhe-sives and sealants in China and South Korea.

Sideflex: Advanced Asset Protection

Biogas Processing Plant in Continuous OperationFor four years, biogas has been produced from maize, grass, and whole plant silage at the Laupheim site, about 30 km south of Ulm, Germany. The raw biogas

is processed by Erdgas Südwest GmbH and made available to end customers in the form of biomethane over the own natural gas grid. In 2008, the first biogas processing plant was commissioned at the site. To re-spond to the growing demand for biomethane, the operator decided to expand the production capacity. In view of the practical experience from the operation and the knowledge of the advantages of dry pressure swing adsorption, the operator opted for a biometh-ane system of ETW Energietechnik. One of the main reasons for this decision: The specialists from Moers, Germany, had the best solution for the challenge of in-tegrating the new technology in the existing array. For the first time, the plant in Laupheim generates bio-methane with the PSA process control developed by ETW, which differs significantly from the established systems in Germany. The result is an extraordinarily high methane content in the product gas with mini-mal methane losses and rock-bottom power con-sumption. Thus, 98 percent of the supplied methane can be delivered to the natural gas grid. The methane loss of 2 percent is returned to the biological process of the biogas plant via an after-burning unit in the form of useful heat. ETW is pleased with the successful product launch of its processing technology

Some 70 years ago, responding to the needs of the newly-arrived, pneumatic-tired mining loaders , RuD-Erlau devised and developed the tire protection chain (TPC) going on to hold over 65 percent of the world market for tire protection and traction chains in min-eral winning, forestry, scrap and demolition, steel mak-ing and other heavy-side industries. Due to feedback from their TPC engineers, RUD-Erlau was well-aware of the vulnerability of dump truck tires and asked their R&D team to tackle the problem. The first instinct was to create a device based on steel-alloy elements. However, success only came when the team turned its attention to materials used in other industries and developed ‘Sideflex’ – a truly innovative addition to their range of asset protection products. A sturdy set of replacement wheel nuts and exten-sions support a simple steel ring to which is attached a fanned array of over-lapping platelets. These platelets shield the entire sidewall of the truck tire deflecting rock fragments harmlessly away. While the mounting components are made of steel, the all-important ‘Sideflex’ shield is manufactured from a sophisticated engineering polymer which has found many applications in the automotive and other industries. This robust material, which is used to pro-tect automobiles, has a unique memory capability that

enables the platelets to flex and deform upon impact and then return to their original shape without any loss of integrity.

“… the Got-thard base tunnel […] will be the

longest rail tunnel in the

world”

onstruction of the NEAT (German acronym for New Rail Alpine Crossing) project represents a further step in regard to Switzer-land’s integration in the growing European high-speed network. The core is the Gotthard base tunnel, which at 57 km will be the longest rail tunnel in the world. It will comprise two single-track tunnel tubes. Construction is simultaneously in progress

on five partial sections of different lengths, so as to optimize the construction time and costs. The costs for this gargantuan project are estimated to be around USD8.4 billion. The construction time will total 20 years. The historic breakthrough of the tunnel occurred on 15th October 2010 and the grand opening is planned for 2016.

C

A coordinated workflow is necessary The heading is created with a tunnel boring machine or traditionally, with drilling and blasting. Afterwards, an external safeguarding shell is applied with shotcrete. This must fulfill the highest requirements for rough-ness and flatness. The drainage layer is applied onto the shotcrete. It is fastened onto the concrete with set-ting bolts. The exact spacing of the fastening points was determined in tests. Discs backed with Velcro are fastened during the same work stage. These will later support the plastic sealing sheeting which is laminated with special felt.

The «worm» has got what it takes The plastic sealing sheets are welded by a giant, 2 x 250 meter long monster, the so-called “worm”. It works around 24 meters a day through the tunnel. Running through its lower part are the supply lines for electric-ity, water and fresh air for the tunnel boring machine which is situated further ahead. The entire construc-tion site traffic including excavated material and per-

sonnel also runs on rails below it. The “worm” is also the location for testing the roughness and flatness of the shotcrete, applying the drainage layer and fastening the Velcro-backed discs. Afterwards, the plastic sealing sheets are unrolled with a special device and pressed onto the Velcro-backed discs. Overhead welding made easy The overlaps of the sheets are then welded tightly and permanently using the TWINNY S welding machines from Leister. This compact combination wedge device has proven its merits once more. Even overhead weld-ing is possible as a result: the TWINNY S presses the two sheets together and thus rises easily and safely during welding. The welding progresses almost by itself. If re-quired, the welding direction can be corrected simply and without interruption. The contact pressure, weld-ing speed and temperature can be adapted to the rele-vant requirements. Despite its small dimensions, weld-ing speeds of up to 2 meters/minute are possible with the TWINNY S, depending on the contact pressure. This

is a crucial advantage when you consider the size of this project. The tightness is the most important criteri-on when evaluating the weld quality. To guarantee the greatest possible safety here, a test channel is installed for each overlap weld. This is realized with the pressure roller on the TWINNY S which was specially designed for this purpose. Working in a confined space The structural sealing acts as a shield protecting against penetration by mountain water. Drainage pipes col-lect the diverted moisture on both sides. This is held in the large, central collecting pipe and routed to the tunnel exits. Waterstop profiles set in concrete on both sides in the kicker area (concrete base) complete the “rain shield”. The rain shield seal is joined to the back of the waterstop here. This fiddly work in a very confined space and on hard substrate is performed with the lightweight and practical semiautomatic welding ma-chine TRIAC DRIVE PID from Leister. Where necessary, a protection rail is mounted afterwards and finally rein-forcement installed. As a final step, the concrete inner shell of the tunnel is installed. 1000 km weld seams The plastic sealing sheets are produced in the Sika plant in Düdingen (Switzerland) with a width of 2.20 meters. Two overlapping sheets are prefabricated here. As a result, a circumferential weld seam of 24 running meters is only necessary approx. every 4.30 meters for processing in the tunnel. This includes the two-sid-ed weld seams on the base seal and the weld seams for the countless cross connections of the two tunnel tubes. In total, this corresponds to a weld seam length of around 1000 kilometers for the entire, 57 kilometer long Gotthard tunnel! The sheet fabrication, cutting-to length and delivery of the plastic sealing sheets are each adapted to the construction section. quality is crucial On account of the permanent shift operation and the special parameters, a high level of dust, heat and air hu-midity arises in the tunnel. Only the best quality of ma-terial, processing and machine enables fault-free and hence efficient work. With a planned service life of over 100 years, there are different requirements in play than those typical of standard structures. All products used for the sealing system therefore had to prove their suit-ability for this extraordinary project during long tests. The selection of the materials was also accompanied by regular monitoring. This thereby ensures that the qual-ity and processing remain within a defined tolerance

range. The specialists at the accredited test institute, Tecnotest AG in Rüschlikon, Switzerland are relied on for this process. Control inspections concerning the drainage and sealing are conducted in the laboratory. Regular peel tests to check the weld quality are carried out directly in the tunnel using the EXAMO test device from Leister. The plastic sealing sheets and the drain-age layer undergo further tests in the laboratory in or-der to test the various material properties. Long-term project The flat rail route opens up new dimensions in passen-ger and goods transportation. Economic centers on both sides of the Alps will be brought closer togeth-er. The railway will become a modern and powerful instrument of transportation on the North-South axis thanks to “AlpTransit”. It will be able to provide greater transport capacity with shorter travelling times. Fur-thermore, it will guarantee an environmentally-friend-ly, sustainable solution for issues of mobility and the continually growing volume of traffic. The quality of this construction of the century is therefore extremely important. Not only is the processing and the material crucial, but also the machinery used. Leister shares the responsibility for this thanks to the use of its welding machines and manual welding devices. After all, the sealing system must continue to fulfill its purpose in 100 years’ time!

he Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has maintained its position as an important destination for American hardwoods with over USD43.22 million worth of hardwood lumber and veneer imports entering the region during the first half of 2012, according to a statement issued by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC). Of this total, exports of American hardwood lumber reached a

value of USD31.10 million and a volume of 44,444 cubic meters, marking an increase of 20 percent and 13 percent respectively over the Janu-ary to June period of 2011. In addition, direct shipments of US hardwood veneers to the MENA region during the period reached a total value of USD12.12 million, rising by 14 percent in comparison to the same period last year.

log exports to the MENA

reached a value of USD13.05

“These statistics have been taken from the latest data released by the united States Department of Agri-culture (uSDA) and account for direct shipments to the MENA region. However, it is important to note that American hardwood veneers are shipped to the region from Europe and China while veneers are also produced in the region - notably in Turkey - from imported Ameri-can hardwood logs. The USDA data released shows that US hardwood log exports to the MENA reached a value of USD13.05 million and a volume of 20,514 cubic me-ters during the same period,” said Roderick Wiles, AHEC Director for Africa, Middle East, India and Oceania.A closer look at the numbers reveals that 29 percent of the volume of American hardwood lumber shipped to the region during the six month period was accounted for by red oak (12,398 cubic meters), which actually fell by 14 percent from the same period in 2011. However, shipments of ash and white oak to the region picked up significantly from the first half of last year, rising by 50 percent to 9,369 cubic meters and by 29 percent to 6,032 cubic meters respectively. Further, exports of American walnut lumber to the region during the Janu-ary to June period of this year were also strong and rose

by 83 percent in volume to 3,614 cubic meters, as com-pared to the same period in 2011. In veneers, exports were dominated by red oak, with significant volumes of walnut, white oak and maple.“The MENA region continues to show strong demand for American hardwoods and white oak in particular, which is currently in demand across the globe and widely preferred for its colour consistency, durability and strong physical properties, making it the perfect material for interior applications and furniture. Market reports indicate that the overall interior contracting and fit-out market in the GCC will increase by 87 per-cent in value this year, the highest increase since 2008, from USD5.04 billion in 2011 to USD9.4 billion. As such, we remain confident that through our ongoing educa-tion and outreach program, we can contribute towards an even greater demand for US hardwoods in the com-ing months and years,” added Wiles. In value terms, the UAE remained a key destination in the MENA region and shipments increased healthily during the period, with US hardwood lumber exports rising by 13 percent in volume to 7,681 cubic meters and by 21 percent in value to USD6.50 million. portant to note, however, that as much as a third of the volume of American hardwood lumber shipped to the UAE is actually destined for other markets in the neighboring Gulf, across the Strait of Hormuz or down the East coast of Africa. Shipments to the UAE were dominated by ash, with significant volumes of red oak, white oak and walnut making up the re-mainder. Other leading destinations for American hardwood lumber in the region included Saudi Ara-bia (USD3.494 million), Egypt (USD2.679 million), Jordan (USD2.047 million), Lebanon (USD1.629 mil-lion) and Qatar (USD998,000).“The increase in American hardwood lumber and veneer imports into the MENA region in the first six months of this year underlines the growing demand for US hardwoods. Significantly, govern-ments across the region have recognized the need to drive sustainability and sound environmental practices within the construction and timber indus-tries, which provides AHEC with the perfect oppor-tunity to highlight the environmental credentials of American hardwoods. With the release of our ISO-compliant Life Cycle Assessment study on US hard-wood lumber, we hope to elevate the environmen-tal credentials of American hardwoods and further increase awareness in this high growth potential market,” concluded Wiles.

Guests from 20 countries arrived in Friuli on Septem-ber 21st, to attend the second edition of the Pilosio Award, established by the long-standing company that manufacturers equipment for the construction in-dustry. The award was given this year to the architect Mario Cucinella for the project A Green School for Gaza which envisages the construction of a completely self-sufficient school in Gaza City in Palestine. The ap-provement of this project was made in person by Mu-nir Manneh, the United Nations’ delegate in Palestin-ian lands. The announcement took on great symbolic value, reinforcing the association of the two words that make up the very name of the award: “building” and “peace”.Dario Roustayan, CEO of Pilosio, in his speech, first of all clarified that the spirit of the day was “seeking to create a network between the actors in the construc-tion sector to lay the foundations of a future in which there are the conditions for the sustainable develop-ment of society”, and he then explained the renewed approach of his company: “We are opening up to the world because there is great space for growth in the world. The great challenge for the future is linked to the lack of infrastructure for the populations of devel-oping countries and, in my opinion, this will be the

KraussMaffei Berstorff is offering customers with immediate effect the KMD 35-26/L, a parallel, counter-rotating twin-screw extruder for laboratory purposes. The KMD 35-26/L is the smallest extruder of this type on the market and can be used by raw material manu-facturers and processors to reduce their material costs enormously. Featuring a parallel 26 L/D processing unit, the twin-screw extruder generally has the same design as a standard production machine. “Our con-cept is extremely attractive, especially for raw material manufacturers, since a so-called process engineering scale-down can be simulated with extremely low ma-terial consumption”, said Hans-Peter Schneider, Project Manager for development processing technology in twin-screw extruders at KraussMaffei Berstorff. The formulation is mixed in small quantities and optimized in subsequent test series before large material quanti-ties are used in a production machine. The laboratory extruder can also naturally be utilized in production companies for quality control tasks. “Processors ben-efit from enormous cost savings when they test the formulation on a small scale, and can therefore offer customers a premium quality end product without producing large numbers of rejects”, emphasized Peter Oswald, Head of the Profile and Sheet Extrusion Group

at KraussMaffei Berstorff. This model is also a lucrative investment in ecological terms because valuable raw material is used sparingly.

new versions, designated Power Pack 400, Power Pack 400 Ecosilence, Power Pack 700 and Power Pack 700 Ecosilence, are housed in a clean and rigid designed 23 ft container equipped with a ‘roll off’ frame for easy on/off truck loading and transportation. The Ecosilence versions feature acoustic surface treat-ment, thick sound absorbing insulation and seals for doors and hatches; all contributing to reduce noise levels to less than half that of conventional power packs – meeting an average 57.5 dB (Power Pack 400 Ecosilence) noise output. Both versions of the ‘top of the range’ Power Pack 700 feature a working pressure of up to 1000 bar (14,500 psi) with a power input of 473 kW (645 hp). The Power Pack 400 Ecosilence has a maximum working pressure of 850 bar (12,300 psi) and a power input of 276 kW (375 hp). The standard high pressure Power Pack 400 unit offers an increased maximum working pressure of 1150 bar (16,700 psi). The latest generation of Power Packs from Aquajet Systems ensure easy handling, cost effective trans-portation, and set-up times and require a minimum of space on-site.

Barnhart, one of the nation’s largest heavy lifting and transportation companies, opened a new operations office in Phoenix, Arizona on August 1. The branch will focus on heavy rigging, engineered rigging and heavy haul transportation and will service power, mining and heavy industrial customers. The company’s breadth of experience in the power industry includes renewable energy (wind, hydro and solar), nuclear, natural gas and coal. In addition to its heavy rigging experience, Barnhart is also known for transport systems that utilize state-of-the-art equipment for moving large components over vast distances. Recently, Barnhart announced the addition of the WesTrac Transporta-tion System to its extensive and innovative equipment inventory. The Barnhart designed system incorporates the features of a modular platform trailer. However, the axle spacing and footprint are designed specifical-ly to meet DOT requirements for roads and highways of the western states. “The Barnhart team thrives on a challenge and the ability to provide innovative solu-tions to a problem,” says Barnhart Western Region Vice President Jim Harris. “Our new location in Arizona puts us in a great position to serve our customers through-

Since 2009, work has been progressing to expand the 100-year-old Holtwood hydroelectric power station on the Susquehanna River with the aim of increasing the generating capacity by 125 megawatts. After care-

Heavyweights Brought Into Shape with PERIfully reviewing proposals from numerous vendors, PERI uSA was commissioned to supply a wide variety of formwork and shoring solutions for this complex project. In addition to other PERI products, VARIOKIT heavy duty shoring towers serve to safely transfer the enormously heavy loads from the slabs of the intake structure. An outstanding advantage for the contrac-tor, Walsh Construction, is that the planning and sup-ply of the formwork and scaffolding is from a single source so that the systems used are perfectly matched to one another. The expansion facilities include an intake structure as well as a powerhouse. Most of the new facilities’ structural components are characterized by their large dimensions resulting in high loads being imposed on the formwork and shoring systems. For the concrete work, various PERI systems are being used – each optimally adapted to suit both geometry and loads. Thanks to its comprehensive product range and vast experience, PERI offers the contractor optimized solu-tions for all the work to be carried out. In addition, the VARIOKIT solution primarily consists of rentable stan-dard components which provided an extremely eco-nomical solution for Walsh Construction.

For the expansion of a power generating station in Holtwood, an intake structure complete with six sluices is being constructed

EvENTS Big 5 2012 Supplement

58 Arab Construction World (ACW) October 2012 / Vol. XXX Issue 10

t The Big 5 2011, it was all about the product; this year it is even more so. As the Middle East’s largest event for the building and construction industry, the event now fills the entire venue at Dubai World Trade Centre, hosting more than 2,300 exhibitors from 64 countries, and some 32,000 visitors. Last year was the first time the exhibition had been subdivided into product sectors, making it much easier for all partici-

pants to access potential business contacts and source products and services of relevance. November’s event will see that focus further empha-sized, with six main product sector areas: Kitchens, Bathrooms & Surfaces (inclusive of marble, stone & ceramic); HVAC; Steel; Water Technology; Coatings, Adhesives and Sealants; Windows & Doors. With co-located shows, FM Expo, Middle East Concrete and PMV Live, participants have ac-cess to the complete range of construction and building products and services.

A

Knowledge is PowerAs well as over 44,000sqm of exhibition, The Big 5 2012 will be held from 5 to 8 November and will host a num-ber of informative and education elements. With 60 per-cent of last year’s participants stating that one of the major reasons for attending the event was to keep up to date with the very latest trends and developments from across the industry, it was vital for The Big 5 orga-nizers to compile a selection of conferences, seminars and workshops that delivered the most relevant news and research. The Green Build Conference has quickly become a pop-ular feature during The Big 5, addressing a topic that continues to grow in prominence and importance for all sectors of the construction industry. Speakers from Dubai Municipality, Masdar City, Atkins, Habtoor Leighton, Mott McDonald and Emirates Green Build-ing Council are just some of those that can be heard

during the two-day conference, covering topics ranging from the value of green building to construction waste management, and greening existing buildings.Following a successful launch in 2011, with more than 130 free educational seminars, the feature will return this year. The seminars will focus on products, innova-tions, technologies and regulations within the GCC – an excellent opportunity for regional companies to show-case their expertise to an international audience. Host-ing seminars is an opportunity open to both exhibi-tors and visitors, with sessions running each day of the event.A new addition to 2012 will be the LEED workshops, focusing on core concepts and also implementation. Workshop facilitator, Mario Seneviratne, a LEED fellow and director of sustainability at Green Technologies FZCO, will take participants through two sessions. The first will cover core concepts and strategies, providing

information on sustainable building concepts that are fundamental to all LEED rating systems. Participants will leave with a much fuller understanding of the LEED intents and processes, as well as key metrics and stan-dards. The second workshop is more in-depth and for those who are already familiar with the LEED ratings system. The discussion will touch upon the roles and respon-sibilities of key stakeholders in the LEED process and strategies that can help communicate LEED to team members. Mr Seneviratne will walk participants through LEED implementation strategies, utilising interactive scenarios to help bring the process to life. All partici-pants will receive a certificate from the US Green Build-ing Council for attending, and full course material packs. “The Big 5 has grown to become so much more than an exhibitor for its participants. During the four-day event, we want people to be able to find real added value in attending, and leave having done business and learned something new that they can apply to their work,” says Andy White, event director for The Big 5.

Rewarding GreenPromoting green initiatives is a subject that The Big 5 has been committed to championing strongly over the past few years. The Gaia Awards will be another returning feature this year; now in its fourth year, the awards have grown to become a leading recognition for companies who are honoring green building initiatives. With sev-en categories, spanning a number of industry sectors, the deadline for entries is August 15, when a judging panel of experts from across the regional and interna-tional building & construction industry will whittle the nominations down to a shortlist. The winners will be an-nounced during The Big 5 2012. White concluded, “This year, we are anticipating another extremely successful event. The sentiment towards the regional construction industry is very optimistic, and the opportunities have attracted significant interest from across the world, par-ticularly as Europe continues to face challenges.”

ACW: Ready for The Big 5As the Middle East’s largest event for the building and construction industry, The Big 5 established it-self as the meeting place for construction manufac-turers, exporters, importers and distributors to dis-cuss the industry’s most topical discussions, finding solutions, facing challenges and seizing opportuni-ties. The partnership between Big 5 and Arab Con-struction World (ACW) magazine goes back a long time where the magazine has been supporting this event through its participation and special coverage. As a media partner of the event, ACW will be pres-ent in the Media Center where thousands of copies of the October issue will be distributed to exhibitors and visitors alike. For more than 30 years, The Big 5 has provided a busi-ness and networking platform for the construction industry. It is an opportunity for buyers and sellers of construction products and services from around the world to source an astounding array of the very latest technologies, innovations and techniques. In short, it is the gateway to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) providing both exhibitors and visitors with the opportunity to conduct serious business with like-minded professionals.ACW has been serving the Middle East & North Afri-can construction industry since 1983 with a distribu-tion of 7943 printed copies and 22724 digital copies all over the region; it is the leading regional business to business magazine providing special services and innovative solutions for the different sectors in the field. ACW readers, namely engineers, contractors, importers/exporters, distributors, manufacturers and suppliers, etc., find in it a comprehensive cov-erage of regional news country reports, technology overviews, case studies, and detailed articles about the most recent technologies related to building, machinery, road and power sectors.

7070 Arab Construction World (ACW) October 2012 / Vol. XXX Issue 10

Ali Alrahbi, Vice President for Quality Health, Safety and Envi-ronment (HSE) & Security at Dolphin Energy, said that while HSE practice in the Gulf energy sector is at a high level, sev-eral key challenges remain. “The energy sector in the GCC is very advanced in setting up HSE policies and procedures, and I believe the region is using the best international prac-tices, codes, and standards related to the energy industry”, said Alrahbi, a panel member at the upcoming 8th Annual HSE Forum in Energy, taking place from 8-10 October at the Doha Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Alrahbi mentioned that “The key challenges to maintain HSE excellence are to increase access to more knowledgeable resources and initiatives dedicated only to HSE, along with developing ways to encourage more Qataris into the HSE field.” He said, “I would like to see a framework where all in-terested parties are represented, operating in collaboration with regulatory bodies to review existing policies and study improvement opportunities in line with best practice from the international community.”

Having begun gas production in 2007, Dolphin Energy oper-ates in Qatar and the UAE, and has consistently placed HSE excellence at the forefront of all its business practices and operations. Alrahbi said that the company has developed a set of key performance indicators to measure continuous ef-forts in safeguarding people, minimizing impacts on the en-vironment, and protecting its assets. He added: “One of Dol-phin Energy’s earliest decisions was to rank quality, health, safety and environmental excellence with other primary business objectives.”

Alrahbi continued, “In 2008, Dolphin Energy started to formalize its CSR commitments, and became a founding member of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group. Since then, it has embraced this commitment further by integrating sustainability key performance indicators into its opera-tional objectives.”
