Dear Oldfields Family:As I approach my last few months as head of our beloved school, I am sure that I view the next stage of my life very much as our seniors do; with anticipation, excitement, and a little bit of fear about what the future holds. However, like each Oldfields girl, I will take the Oldfields “magic” and love with me. Oldfields is not left behind, but remains a part of us as we venture forth into the next stage in our lives. This is why when our graduates return for Alumnae Weekend; they truly feel as though they are returning home.

When I came back to Oldfields in 2008, it was a homecoming for me as well. It has been both a joy and a privilege to watch Oldfields reemerge as the mission-driven, family-oriented school that has become a part of each and every one of us. This success has been the result of the dedicated efforts of faculty, alumnae, parents, and Board members, all of whom cherish the School and its focus. Once again, we

are fully enrolled, have a balanced budget, and are looking towards the future.

One reflection of the current strength of Oldfields is the fact that we are no longer focused on surviving, but rather on thriving. During Alumnae Weekend this year, we will be launching a capital campaign leading up to our sesquicentennial anniversary in 2017. Our goal is to raise 12 million dollars for a variety of projects, including the restoration of Old House, new facilities, as well as for endowment. We believe that by the launch, we will be nearly halfway to our goal! Please come home to Oldfields for the campaign launch on April 27th.

Where do you draw your inspiration from as an artist? Who are your role models?

Hilary: My two favorite portrait painters are Goya and Alice Neel. I think they are the greatest painters ever in terms of capturing individuality and humanity.

What is your favorite work of art that you have created and why?

Hilary: It’s hard to narrow it down to one. The portraits I’m the most proud of are "John Guth" and "Jack Tigue". They are lively in terms of the use of paint and drawing and capturing the sitter. I guess I enjoy the look of an “unfinished” portrait. Recently I’ve been doing a bunch of dog portraits which I also enjoy. I’ve been sculpting as well and will be teaching it in the Berkshires this spring.

Were there any unique challenges associated with painting Taylor’s portrait?

Hilary: Getting him to find the time to sit...and sit still! Also, to capture his twinkly mischievous side as well as his seriously kind essence was a challenge. I think we both enjoyed the process of creating the portrait at Oldfields in front of the girls and the rest of the community. Taylor was and is such an inspiration.

You donated your time to Oldfields to paint Taylor’s portrait. Why is the School meaningful to you?

Hilary: As a four-year senior, Oldfields was a big part of me. I had come from a very disjointed Foreign Service background, having lived in many countries. I’d attended an English boarding school that was rigorous and strict. Then, as an 11-year-old, I attended a public junior high school ranked amongst the worst in the country. I was shell shocked. The nurturing environment at Oldfields allowed me to find myself.

Taylor just completed her sophomore year at CCBC-Essex, where she earned 2011 and 2012 All-Region First Team honors, All-Tournament honor, the Most Valuable Player award, and was the Female Athlete of the Year and All-American nominee. Taylor graduated from Oldfields School where she earned League (IAAM) All Star Junior and Senior Years, and Team MVP Junior and Senior Years.

During the fall season, the Admission Office schedule was packed with traveling, interviewing, and hosting the many prospective students interested in Oldfields School. These efforts have certainly been reflected in our statistics; not only are we currently 200% ahead in applications and 41% ahead of where we were last year in interviews, but the quality of our applicant pool continues to impress Mr. Smith, Dr. Hagerman, and the Admission Office.

The small but mighty Admission team (with assistance from the Development Office) has collectively covered 25 fairs in locations such as New England, Florida, Texas, and Bermuda (just to name a few). Our wonderful parent and alumnae constituency became an integral part of the Admission team this season as they covered eight school fairs in locations such as Nevada, Illinois, Colorado, and California. A special shout out goes to Nicki Farquharson P’15 who graciously covered a fair for us in Montego Bay, Jamaica in November.

The Admission team attended a total of four conferences this year. Dr. Hagerman shared an invigorating and informative presentation at the annual SSATB conference in Chicago and Oldfields was also represented at the IECA annual conference in Atlanta. School Connections in Miami and Arlington, VA and the NAIS SSS Financial Aid conference in Baltimore both proved to be educational development opportunities. With the support of our faculty and students, the Admission Office has hosted three extremely successful open houses this season. All in all, the office has been busy promoting and representing Oldfields School, all the while recruiting girls who we believe are mission-appropriate and who will impact and thrive in our community.

As of this issue, both applications and interviews have increased by 12 percent since this time last year. The School has maintained a steady increase over the past five years in both areas. Please let us know if you are aware of a young lady who would thrive at Oldfields. In this unique environment, every girl is valued as an individual and no one is left to slip through the cracks.

As we prepare for your arrival, we wanted to inform you of some important events. On Friday, April 26th at noon, we are having the Alumnae Association Induction Luncheon for the class of 2013. It is a seated, community luncheon in the gym and we would love to have you attend. Let us know so we can have a seat ready for you.

After the lunch, we invite you to join us in the art gallery located in the Tammis Day Academic Center for the Sarah Greenhalgh ’83 art show. Sarah passed away in July and we are honoring her memory by featuring her art. The art show will be open all weekend. Leave your memory of Sarah in the remembrance book that will be given to her family after Alumnae Weekend.

The library will be open for treats and student performances at 2 p.m. Come sit with your friends and enjoy live music by our girls. Would you like
