TKE LAMBDA SIGMA TURNS 50A Brotherhood 71 Years in the Making

PRECURSOR: We all learned that prior to Tau Kappa Epsilon there was Theta Chi Delta and for most that is where our history begins – 50 years ago this May - but the roots of the Lambda Sigma Chapter go much deeper than that. All the way back to 1947 in fact. In that year a local Fraternity named Kappa

Tau Gamma was chartered by Keene State College and from the beginning had eyes on becoming a chapter of a national fraternity. In 1948 they were successful in finding that National affiliation and became the Alpha Iota Chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma.

BECOMING TAU KAPPA EPSILON:They remained a chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma until 1954 when for unknown reasons they dis-affiliated with the National Fraternity and became the local fraternity Theta Chi Delta. It is not known why they didn’t revert back to Kappa Tau Gamma at that time. For 14 years Theta Chi Delta was a prominent fraternity on the Keene State campus. Their guiding principles were High Academic Standing, Leadership, and College Spirit. On more than one occasion Sigma Tau Gamma attempted to persuade Theta Chi Delta to re-affiliate with the national headquarters, however Theta Chi Delta remained. The Chapter was known for it’s annual “White Rose Ball” and their Christmas Party for under privileged children.

Towards the end of 1966, the 18 month process of affiliating with Tau Kappa Epsilon began and on May 18th 1968 the Lambda Sigma Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon was born. The membership of Theta Chi Delta at the time of affiliation with TKE was 69 men*

MEMBERSHIP remained strong at Lambda Sigma into the mid 70’s but then saw a dip and by 1981 was less than 20 active Fraters. In 1982 a large group numbering over 20 men joined. From that point forward there was a boom in membership throughout the 80’s and early 90’s.

AT THE HEIGHT of this boom in 1985 - 87 the chapter saw it’s active membership swell to 67 men. This strong membership resulted in 3 consecutive Greek Week championships in 1985, 86 & 87. The current Chapter has a chance to match the 3-peat with a Greek Week championship this May. Despite the house being sold in 1988 the chapter continued to be strong with good recruiting into the 90s and eventually found a long term rental at 11 Blake Street. Following a low recruitment period in the early 2000’s the Chapter closed it’s doors for unknown reasons in 2003 and remained closed for several years despite a growing interest among its alumni to see it reborn. Then in 2008 the following students; Ryan Chatel, Eric McCooey, Colin Isotti, Drew Arvin, Garrett Costello, Donald Clemmenson, Kevin Mousseau, Brian Finer, Josh

Helmbrect, Jamie Bluestein, Michael Barry, Robert Hammond, Kevin Day, & Matthew Harrington provided the jump start that Lambda Sigma needed. Kevin Mousseau is the nephew of all 3 Mousseau brothers that were active at the chapter throughout the 70’s which provided a convenient link from the present to

the past. At the same time that these men were working to revive Lambda Sigma a group of alumni were working to form a supportive Alumni Association. 35 charter members of the Alumni Association were primarily from the mid 1980’s through early 90’s. This effort was lead by Keith Malatesta, Josh Terrell, Dave Sime, Mark

Lussier and Timothy Hay primarily but was soon joined by a large number of volunteers and donors and the Alumni Association grew into what it has become today.

HOUSINGAT THE TIME of affiliation, Theta Chi Delta was residing at the Carroll House on Main Street in Keene which today is an art gallery.

In 1970 the Chapter moved to a house just behind Carroll House at 53 Marlboro Street. TKE Lambda Sigma remained at 53 Marlboro for 18 years. They were forced to sell the house in the face of mounting costs for repairs in Spring of 1988.

TKE prevailed, finding a long term rental at 11 Blake Street where the Chapter remained until 1998.

Currently the members of TKE are located at a few off campus houses in Keene but there is no Fraternity or Alumni owned property.

MA STEWARTThroughout the 1970’s the Chapter lived at 53 Marlboro St. and followed an old custom of having a live in “House Mother.” Ma Stewart lived in an apartment at the back of 53 Marlboro. She was known for being available to any TKE brother to talk about school, girl troubles, anything at all. Alumni Jim Langley #183 said during his interview for the TKE Grenade Newsletter, that Ma Stewart may have given more to TKE than anyone in the history of the Chapter. Alumni Robert Caron relayed to us that Lambda Sigma TKE members attended her funeral. Here are the only 2 pictures we have of Ma Stewart.

Currently the Chapter is a strong group of young men numbering roughly 30 active members which is overseen by an Alumni Board of Advisors and supported by a strong Alumni Association which was founded in 2009. The Chapter is known for excelling in community service activities and has established 2 signature philanthropic events each year. TKE in a Box is an event where the Chapter lives for a week in a box constructed of cardboard in the center of the Keene State Campus to raise awareness and funds for the homeless. This event has been a smash hit for the Chapter, Campus and Community. In 2016 the Chapter added a 2nd event called See Saw for a Chance, which sees chapter members riding a See/Saw on campus for over 24 hours straight to raise funds for St Jude Children’s Hospital – TKE’s National Philanthropy. The support given to the Chapter by it’s Alumni is just another reason TKE has risen above other Fraternities at Keene State. In 2016 The Lambda Sigma Alumni Association raised over $13,000 and another $11,000 in 2017 from it’s alumni in support of the Chapter and to date since founding has raised over $55,000 for Scholarship and leadership opportunities. This past year the Alumni funded 2 students’ trips to the TKE National Conclave, awarded 2 Scholarships, and provided funds for other chapter events. The future is bright for the Lambda Sigma Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon.
