THE LAMB’S KIN www.fpcsanangelo.org August 2016
Devotion for August
A fter ten days away, thousands of miles traveled, countless
nails pounded into wood, and nine houses built – it is great
to be home after another mission trip to Guatemala. Thank
you for your prayers and generous giving that made it possi-
ble for us to do so much good in a setting where there continues to be so
much need.
The first photo above shows my family and me standing beside
the first home we built, and the second shows my daughter, Coree, and
me looking through the window of the final house we built.
A few of highlights of the trip are these:
•We celebrated Coree’s, Lanee’s and Jorge Santizo’s birthdays
last Monday evening in San Lucas – complete with a huge birth-
day cake covered in candles, a piñata filled with candy, and fire-
works off the roof of the mission school. (I’m not sure what the
neighbors thought since it was well after dark!)
•Jorge told us that because of your generosity they will be able
to complete the school’s new kitchen – where all of the food for
the children and the mission teams is prepared. You may remem-
ber that because of your generosity last year they were able to
complete the roof on the second-story addition that houses the
new dining area and kitchen.
•Last Wednesday evening our team was able to host many of the
children you support through the annual scholarships you con-
tribute. New clothing was given to all of them and they were thrilled!
Lanee and I were able to visit with the young girl we have been
supporting the past five years, and Wendy Christina has turned
into a lovely thirteen-year–old since we last saw her three years ago.

Time in Guatemala well spent by those on Mission Trip
A message from our Pastor
First Presbyterian
Church
W e have all had times on the mount, when we have seen
things from God’s stand-point and have wanted to stay there; but God will nev-er allow us to stay there. The test of our spiritual life is the power to descend; if we have power to rise only, something is wrong. It is a great thing to be on the mount with God, but a man only gets there in order that afterwards he may get down among the devil-possessed and lift them up. We are not built for the mountains and the dawns and aesthetic affinities, those are for mo-ments of inspiration—that is all. We are built for the val-ley, for the ordinary stuff we are in, and that is where we have to prove our mettle. Spiritual selfishness always wants repeated moments on the mount. We feel we could talk like angels and live like angels, if only we could stay on the mount. The times of exaltation are exceptional, they have their meaning in our life with God, but we must beware lest our spiritual selfishness wants to make them the only time. We are apt to think that everything that happens is to be turned into useful teaching, it is to be

Continued from P. 1 turned into something bet-ter than teaching, viz., into character. The mount is not meant to teach us any-thing, it is meant to make us something. There is a great snare in asking — “What is the use of it?” In spiritual matters we can never calculate on that line. The moments on the mountain tops are rare moments, and they are meant for something in God’s purpose. “I have chosen you” (John 15:16). Keep that note of greatness in your creed. It is not that you have got God, but that He has got you.“ Oswald Chamber My Utmost for His Highest

Now that we have returned – and with the arrival of August – it is
time to turn our attention to the fast approach of the new program year.
On Sunday, August 21, we return to the regular schedule of Contemporary
Praise and Worship at 9:00 a.m. and Traditional Worship at 11:00 a.m. –
with Sunday school for all ages at the 10:00 o’clock hour.
After a great experience last year with “The Story” we are now go-
ing to embark on a study and sermon series entitled “A Journey Through
John.” The series will be based on a Bible study developed by N. T.
Wright, which features a 26-week study of John’s fascinating account of the
story of Jesus. The study guides will soon be available and I hope you will
make plans to join us in this marvelous study of the fourth Gospel.
Finally, this Sunday is when we celebrate the annual Summer Com-
munion, so I hope you will make plans to be in worship if you are in town.
We have two more Sunday’s in our study of II Corinthians, and I hope you
have found the summer series on the “Warmth of God’s Mercy” to have
been an encouragement in your walk of faith.
P.S. – According to the calendar I have now begun my tenth year as your
pastor. It doesn't seem possible so much time could have passed so quickly.
All I know is that Spencer was 12 when we arrived in San Angelo, and soon
he will turn 22 so there is no denying the march of time!
Simply know that it continues to be a great joy and privilege for me to
serve as your pastor. Thank you for your prayers, your kindness, and for
sharing the walk of faith in the name of Jesus.
Send us the mailing address of your college
student(s) ASAP—we don’t anyone to miss
out on receiving a goody box from FPC!

FPC Women—expand your bible knowledge with Community Bible Study
T H E L A M B ’ S K I N
C ommunity Bible
Study’s (CBS) sto-
ry is rooted in
prayer and
a strong desire to help peo-
ple grow in their relation-
ship with Jesus by explor-
ing the Bible.
CBS began as an answer to the heartfelt prayer of a group of women
who prayed that the Lord would provide Bible studies for people in the
Washington, D.C. area. As a result of those prayers, the first CBS class
began in the fall of 1975 at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD.
Over 500 women, from many different churches, registered to study the
book of John. Lee Campbell taught the first class. She, along with her hus-
band Floyd (Corky), were used by God to get CBS off the ground.
San Angelo’s 2016-17 CBS Day Class will kick off on August 31,
2016 at 10:00 a.m. till 11:45 a.m. at The Heights Church, 4512 Sherwood
Way. Over the course of thirty weeks, the class will explore nine small, yet
powerful and practical New Testament books essential for Christian living
and leadership: I & II Timothy, Titus, Philemon, James, Jude and I, II,
III John. Nancy Cargile is serving as the teaching director for the year.
There is a $35 registration fee which must accompany the registra-
tion form. An additional $30 donation is requested from those participat-
ing to offset the expense of the study guide. Scholarships to attend the
study are available. Childcare is available and registration of your child/
children is required as well. There is a $10/child registration fee. The chil-
dren will engage in age-appropriate bible study. The child attending must
have a registered parent who is attending the class. Scholarships are avail-
able for the children’s program.
