God IS at Work in our Midst Last Sunday I gave a Biblical reflection at the Christchurch Gathering based out of Jesus’ response to the Pharisees in Luke 17 [21] ‘the kingdom is among you.’ I concluded with examples of where I see signs of the ‘kingdom among us’ in the Lamb of God; such as - in the worship time we had just enjoyed with little children dancing in spontaneous joy around the podium, in the relationships Veronica and I had enjoyed the previous evening at Lord’s Day with the Challies family and others from our house group, in the suffering and trials we endure together as a people [Andrea’s mother has just to the Lord following a battle with cancer], and the Christian intimacy of love in family life. Yes- aspects of the kingdom are present in our lives. And then I recalled a letter I received a couple of weeks ago from David Black, a long time member. David’s letter: Your item on cluster living in the March Chronicle, and the reference to teen years being seen by many as a lost battle (page 5) prompted me to put pen to paper. Our family’s involvement with Lamb of God started in 1982, when I took our oldest daughter to an outreach, held over 3 nights at Sacred Heart (now Cathedral) College; to which students from other Catholic Colleges were invited. I did not know much about the community at the time, but was particularly impressed by the testimonies of the young people. As a result of that outreach, the two of us started attending Sunday gatherings, and it wasn’t long before all our four young daughters were also attending. Our involvement with Lamb of God also coincided with the start of the so-called ‘terrible teen’ years and our family’s teen years spanned a total of 13 ½ years. For all of those years, our daughters were fully involved with young people’s activities in the Lamb of God and in Encounter Jesus from when it started. They also did most of their socialising with the other young people in Community. Looking back over those times, I would recommend Lamb of God as an ideal place for bringing up teenagers. Moving on to the next generation, with family members living in the Burwood cluster, most of our 10 grandchildren are experiencing from an early age what cluster living is all about, with their friends living within walking distance. Quite a unique feature in all this is that most of the parents of those children flatted together in single men’s and women’s households which were a feature of the cluster in the late 1980’s and 1990’s. Also, quite a few of our grandchildren have Lamb of God members as their godparents. Indeed further witness to the reality that God IS at work in our midst. Roger Foley: Senior Coordinator

30th ANNIVERSARY ‘FIRE FILLED’ EVENTS!

The Christchurch Branch hosted two specialevents over the weekend of 4-5 July to celebratethe 30th Anniversary of the founding of the Lambof God. On Saturday we hosted a family Lord’sDay and catered meal, with invited guests fromthe Lutheran and Apostolic Churches, severalCatholic pastors, leaders from CharismaticRenewal, the Light of Christ Community andLamb of God leaders from Auckland, Napier,Wellington, Nelson, Blenheim, Timaru andDunedin. The Women’s Leadership Councilmade a decision two months earlier that theywould prepare and serve the meal to allattending. The sisters gathered at the Lamb of

God Centre at 2.00pm to start the main preparations. It was a very cold day and so all heatersthroughout the Centre were turned on high by 3.00pm as guests and families were due by5.00pm for the Lord’s Day. Then every electric cooking range and additional appliances were inuse for the meal preparation. Unbeknown to the sisters, the main switchboard area, somedistance away, started to swirl with smoke, accompanied by quite a strong smell – yes - of things

To Vilma Lorca [Christchurch], who will now proceed to her Master program and hopefully will be joined with Popong and the 2 children soon!

3burning, and it wasn’t Mary’s pastry! The bottom line was all heaters in the main auditorium anddining area died, but the lights still functioned. In the adjacent lounge, with the slider doors opento the auditorium to handle the numbers attending, the heaters remained on but the lights wouldnot work. And in the kitchen areas - all kept working so the huge catering department just keptgoing!

On the Sunday we continued to celebrate with a Special General Gathering open to all. Thisincluded a sustained time of worship, a briefer version of the PowerPoint presentation shown atthe meal, items of song and dance, and a time of witnessing. It concluded with a time offellowship for adults and an ice-cream feast for the children. Quite a weekend! For our branch-these were big events to host, cater, serve and accommodate- but what a joy!

AND THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

June 27th marked the birthday a dear member of our community – Brian Scoullar [Central]. Ontwo occasions, we were able to see him and just enjoy stories of his early years. It has been agreat privilege to spend time with Brian who up to now is so eager to spread the Good News ateach available opportunity. He continues to evangelize and share the love of God with much“gusto”. All at the ripe age of 92! He also devoutly prays for us members of the Lamb of GodCommunity, our leaders in government and people who don’t know Christ.

After visiting Brian, one common experience we all have is - being energized! His passion forpleasing and loving God, his prayer life and his commitment to living a Godly life is truly aninspiration. As I reflect, I remember two bible verses: Romans 8:18 - The suffering we have noware nothing compared to the great glory that will be shown to us and 2 Tim 4:7 to 8 – I havefought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now a crown is being heldfor me – a crown for being right with God…

As Brian said – “THE BEST IS YET TO COME!” Amen to that Brian!!!Joel Sison

CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITYResource for House Group Discussion by Roger Foley

‘I am so busy, no time for community...’August/2009

Life today is busy- has it always been so?

1 Kings 20 [39-40] Read the background. A man is assigned to care for a prisoner -‘…while I was busy here and there, he escaped.’

Luke 10 [38-42] Mary sat at the Lord's feet listening to what He said - this howeverdistracted Martha because of all the work she saw needed doing. Martha asked Jesus -‘don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? - tell her to help me’ -but Jesus replied ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing isneeded. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’

Luke 12 [22-34] wonderful passage where Jesus teaches on worry, treasure and thekey direction of life - ‘for the pagan world runs after all such things …but seek Hiskingdom, and these things will be given to you as well …do not be afraid, little flock, foryour Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom…sell possessions and give tothe poor …provide purses that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not beexhausted … for where your treasure is, there also your heart’

But more ‘meetings’ stress me out! They are not ‘more meetings’- they are life giving opportunities! Being in a Christian Community cannot be another appendage to an already

overly busy life. Why? Because Christian Community is a valid way of ‘living life’-a way to live a full and enjoyable life, a way of life supporting a balanced familyand single life

If you see it as another pressured add-on, you see it wrong!

Okay, remind me how community life can help? Community helps us see our first priority is the Lord, then our family We receive spiritual and practical support in our small groups Community provides great relationships to support family and children *And community provides a ‘pathway for family and children’ to grow

KAIROS NEW ZEALAND YOUTH NEWS

Winter Oasis 2009 – July 17 to 19

About 50 young men and women spent a weekend in Carey Camp in Henderson and they hadan awesome time of praise and worship, prayer, workshops, teachings, sports, games and funtogether. The theme for this year was G-Force [or God=Force]: Growing Deeper, Flying Higher. They developed their skills and talents in drama, music composition and dance. Although this isa shorter Winter Oasis, many of the youth felt that this has been the best so far, as theythoroughly enjoyed the talks, prayer times, workshops and fellowship through basketball. Can’twait for next year!

A sharing from Chrisanne Antao: During praise and worship last week before Winter Oasis, Ihad a word that I would have an awesome time at Winter Oasis and also that there would begifts and blessings waiting to be received at camp. Even though I received this word, I was nottoo keen about going to Winter Oasis. When I had injured my knee last year, it prevented mefrom playing at an Aussie tournament that my team was going to. I really love playing sports andeven though I tried to enjoy my Aussie trip, I didn’t. I was really angry at God and was graduallybuilding this wall between God and me and this inhibited God to work in my life. Every weekafter Lamb of God gatherings I used to complain about the meetings even though I had enjoyedmyself. Every month I used to say this is my last month that I am coming to Lamb of God. DuringAuntie Mhel’s talk I felt that the Lord was with me and broke that wall I was building against him.I recommitted my life to God and I felt really amazing. Maria had said during her praise andworship that ‘the devil makes you feel like you are the victim’. This helped me realise why I’vebeen building this wall and therefore not allowing the Lord to work in my life. Another thing that Idiscovered about myself is that I focus more on other people’s opinions rather than God’sopinion. This is something that I need to work on and is going to help me keep the fire burningwithin.

PRAYERWATCH SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, ARISE

Besides the armour and weapons listed in Ephesians 6: 10-18, God has made other provisionsfor our divine protection. And over the past few months I have looked at some of them such asthe ‘Name of the Lord,’ the ‘Blood of the Lamb,’ the ‘Word of God’ and the ‘Cross of Christ’. Theweapons God has provided for our protection are powerful and need to be used if we are tosurvive our battles. Only those who know Jesus Christ have received these precious gifts andcan use them as God has given us all we need to be victorious. Let us never forget we are in aspiritual battle, let us never underestimate the power of weapons God has given us or neglect touse them as we journey to our heavenly Father.

During the month of June, God has been reminding us that we are in a spiritual battle; that weneed to stand firm through the prophetic word received at our gatherings. Prophetic words comethrough regularly encouraging spiritual warfare as this year up until the end of May we receivednine. But in June there was a big increase with 3 words on the June 7, 4 words on June 14 and5 words on the June 21, a total of 12. Many remind us that God is our refuge, that Satan is like aprowling lion trying to tempted us from God’s kingdom, others that there is darkness in this worldand God has called us to walk in the light, to polish up the weapons and armour [Ephesians 6:13-18]. An incident last month showed why God was warning the ‘Lamb of God’ that we are in aspiritual battle and need to use our armour and weapons.

The ‘Lamb of God’ Community Prayerwatch has been given to us by God so we are aware weare in a spiritual battle, that we can stand firm by taking our place on the Watch. Now maybe isthe time God is calling us to join the ‘Watch’ if we have not been able to before, to join manyfaithful brothers and sisters now, who are standing firm and using the armour and weapons Godhas given us.

If you have any comments or questions concerning the Prayerwatch then please send them tome at [email protected] or give them to one of your branch leaders to send to me.God bless and watch over you all.

Alan McKenzie. National Coordinator Prayerwatch.
