The Lake Cerknica – the miracle of nature

»I can claim, without any false pretense, that the story about the Lake Cerknica is one

big miracle of nature.« This was written more than 300 years ago by a Slovene polyhistorian Janez Vajkard Valvazor. Magic, mysterious, romantic. All this is the famous Lake Cerknica still today.

In spring, when the water fills the lake, which remains there until summer, many bird species return (there are more than 200 species nesting by the lake, constantly or temporary). They nest in an ideal, peaceful environment, since the lake is located on one of the vital European trails of migratory birds. Throughout the year, there are more than 200 species of birds to be found in the vicinity, and 85 species nests in the lake or near-by. One of these is also the corncrake (kosec) which is endangered. There are only about 70 pairs to be found by the lake.

, The black-necked grebe (rjavovrati ponirek) is the only one nesting in Slovenia.

Here we can also find the yellowlegs (rdečenogi martinc) , which is also nesting at Ljubljansko barje moor.

There are more birds which find their food in the lake: the white-tailed eagle (orel belorepec)

and the golden eagle (planinski orel)

.

Upon the coming of summer, the lake also “takes a break” and lets the water out through its sinkholes. It then fills up the thirsty Karst and the Ljubljana basin.

The visitors can see the other image of the lake, “the dry image”, which reminds them of a desert with its dusty, cracked surface, covered by high lake grass (which farmers happily mow and use as litter), and reed, which presents safety for various animals. The autumn rains fill up the lake very quickly, and that lasts all through to winter season.

Winter means activity and life by the lake. The lake is turned into a giant skate ring, visited by skaters from all over the place.

On the eastern part of the lake (Dovice) there grows the only flesh-eating plant in Slovenia, the roundleaf sundew (okroglolista rosika), which is unfortunately endangered species allover the world.

l We are going to stop at the village called Dolenje jezero, where we can see a model representing the typical intermittent characteristics of the lake in various seasons and at different quantity of precipitation.
