This year's Special Offering Sunday benefiting Murphy-Harpst Children's Centers will be held on July 15th. While the conference has designated this date, your church is free to select any Sunday that works best in your schedule. Materials were distributed to churches who have participated in the Special Offering Sunday in any of the previous three years; however materials are available if your congregation would like
to participate this year! Supplemental handouts such as Informational Sheets and Newsletters are also available. Individuals may give online at: http://weblink.donorperfect.com/dayofgiving. If you would like to request additional materials, or find out more about getting involved with Murphy-Harpst, please contact Claire Cantrell Wood at [email protected]. Thank you for supporting the children at Murphy-Harpst! (Materials not picked up at the Pre-Conference Meeting, are available at the District Office)
2018 United Methodist Children's Home Amazing Grace Offering
Then. Now. Always.
Each year churches across the North Georgia Conference participate in the Amazing Grace Offering. This
is an important day in the life of the church as we join together to give and pray on behalf of the 15,000
children who are in state custody. The Amazing Grace Offering is one of the many ways that churches
can engage in the important mission of restoring children and families from trauma through Jesus Christ.
It is time again to start planning for the Amazing Grace Offering. Please be on the lookout for your
Amazing Grace materials, which will be shipped to you soon. Many churches participate in the offering
on the third Sunday in September, but churches are invited to participate in the offering on any date
that works best with their worship calendar.
We want to hear from you! We love hearing your success stories, ideas, and questions. Let us know
when your church plans to participate in the offering. Let us know if you are interested in having a
UMCH representative come to your church on the day of the offering. Stay in touch by contacting your
Church Engagement Manager or email: [email protected].

Spotlight on Keeney Memorial UMC:
On Tuesday nights during the summer, Keeney Memorial, under the direction of pastor Rev. Brenda Rhodes, has been offering a program for children ages 6-17, called “Faith Formation”. During this time of fun and fellowship, the children are learning about Growing in Faith, Growing in Discipleship and Growing Together. Below are some pictures of DS Susan Landry’s visit on a recent Tuesday night.
Information from the LaGrange District Committee on Ordained Ministry All members of the DCOM are reminded of DCOM training sponsored by the Conference Center for Clergy Excellence on Thursday, August 16 at the Newnan First UMC, 10:00am. Following the training there will be a meeting of the DCOM to interview new candidates for ministry. Future DCOM meetings for 2018-19 include: Thursday, October 4 @ Cornerstone UMC – committee meets with those seeking Provisional status and with students and continuing candidates (times will be confirmed a month prior to the meeting) Monday, February 4 @ Cornerstone UMC – committee will meet with all local pastors for license renewal (times will be confirmed a month prior to the meeting) Attention Local Pastors!
As you know, Local pastors must complete Course of Study in a timely fashion. Part Time Local Pastors
(PTLP) must complete 2 courses each year, and Full Time Local Pastors (FTLP) must complete 4 each
year, until all 20 courses are completed. (Seminary students and graduates who are LPs are exempt.)
The Conference Board of Ordained Ministry (BOM) has approved waivers for the last 2 years, giving
grace, once more, in 2018. However, please note the words from Dr. Glenn Ethridge, the chair of the
BOM, in a note to all Cabinet members on July 3, 2018:
"The BOM seemed highly resolved that it would not approve waivers next year for FTLP who have not
completed four classes in the course of study and for PTLP who have not completed two classes in the
course of study by February 2019. Please note the deadline: February 2019." This means, if you haven't
completed COS, you will need to sign up as soon as possible for your courses. If you don't complete
these minimums by Feb 2019, you run the very high risk that you will not be eligible for an
appointment. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact us in the district office.

Rooted and Fall Confirmation
Retreats The fall is a great time to build on the unity and growth of your church's youth group, and
what better way than to begin the fall with a retreat?
You may be thinking "It's not even the end of June yet," but our conference retreats fill up
fast, so now is the time to start making plans and spreading the word for your group to attend
one of the fall retreats.
This year's Rooted Retreat weekends are October 5-7 and October 12-14. You can find out
more about the Rooted Retreats at https://www.ngumc.org/rootedretreat and access the
registration there. (Note that the registration process is going through a major upgrade,
which will make things easier and clearer.) The Fall Confirmation Retreat is September 28th-30th, and you can read about this retreat and
how it differs from the Spring Confirmation Retreat at https://www.ngumc.org/confirmationresources. The registration link is found there and is now
open.
Volunteers Needed for Long-Term Recovery Efforts As long-term recovery efforts in South Georgia continue in response to Hurricane Matthew (2016), Hurricane Irma (2017), and severe storms (2017), there are requests for volunteer teams to come serve in the area. Help is needed in Albany with drywall and painting and the coastal area of Georgia for framing, roofing, drywall, and painting projects. Teams who can assist at any point between July and October can contact South Georgia Conference Disaster Response Coordinator Luis Morales by emailing [email protected]. This is just one of many opportunities to participate in the long-term recovery. A list of current opportunities can be found by clicking here. We will advise via North Georgia Conference e-news if there is call-up of ERT in North Georgia or if we receive the invitation from other conferences. Thank you for all you do to serve our neighbors near and far, Rev. Scott Parrish
