The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many ways in which we

gather in 2020. The Labyrinth Society Annual Gathering that was

originally planned for 2020 has been postponed to autumn 2021. In

its place, this year we will be gathering virtually using Zoom online

video conferencing. While this is a new platform for TLS, we are very

excited to be able to engage an even wider and more diverse

participation of labyrinth enthusiasts from around the world.

A Letter from the Labyrinth Society President

The journey of the Labyrinth Society (TLS) is very similar to that of a labyrinth walk. The “labyrinth landscape” has changed significantly since the Labyrinth Society’s inception in 1998 as a U.S. nonprofit 501c3 organization. At that time when someone mentioned “labyrinth,” a blank stare or a quizzical expression usually followed.

Today, after all these years of TLS members among others sharing labyrinths with the

world, labyrinths have become more mainstream, and there are people all over the world

building labyrinths. Our Facebook group has almost 10,000 members from all over the

world, and there are posts in German, Dutch, Spanish, and other languages as well as

English. Each of these people touches countless others. TLS has accomplished its goal of

bringing labyrinths to the world. Now what?

The Labyrinth Society is evolving to meet the changing needs of the growing worldwide

labyrinth community and connect people around the world in more meaningful ways.

Although the TLS mission, “to support all those who create, maintain and use labyrinths,

and to serve the global community by providing education, networking and opportunities

to experience transformation,” has not changed, the ways in which we address that mission

are changing. Our vision is to reflect the abundant diversity, inclusivity, and creativity of

the worldwide labyrinth community through our membership, operating structure, and

programs.

Won’t you be a part of that change? TLS is staffed primarily by volunteers who give many

hours of service because of their love of labyrinths. In addition to the tangible benefits,

members receive the larger benefit of knowing that you are part of a diverse and growing

community of individuals around the world who probably have only one thing in

common: their love of labyrinths. Your membership supports many TLS initiatives, such

as our website, podcasts, videos, and digital publications, social media, the Worldwide

Labyrinth Locator, the Labyrinth Market, various TLS resources and materials, and the

annual Gathering.

About The Labyrinth Society (TLS)

OUR MISSION STATEMENT: The Labyrinth Society is an international organization whose mission is to support all those who create, maintain, and use labyrinths, and to serve the global community by providing education, networking, and opportunities to experience transformation.

Brief History of TLS The Labyrinth Society was born on Thursday, November 6, 1998, by unanimous agreement of the 43 Founding Circle members present at the Caroline Conference and Retreat Center in St. Louis. We celebrated with a birthday cake the following night: 11-7 was an auspicious date for labyrinth festivities. Since that time, we have held annual gatherings, created a communications network through the website, sponsored two symposiums in Europe, annually sponsored World Labyrinth Day, created a video, and conducted many other projects too numerous to mention here. This is just the beginning. We are continuing to create The Labyrinth Society’s history every day, with each step on the path. Education Outreach The responsibility of Education Outreach is to spread knowledge about labyrinths and TLS. As we update our website to reflect the significant changes in our organization and to make learning about and sharing transformational labyrinthine experiences easier, Education Outreach has been updating its section of the website. In the new website, what used to be called "Labyrinths in Places" will become "Labyrinths in Use." The expanding world of our international organization is growing in exciting new ways as volunteers, Regional Representatives and our creative members explore the endless possibilities of labyrinth use. We are currently looking at possible programs that will further interconnect the leadership circle, share and expand the knowledge of labyrinths, and make TLS better than ever. We also have a new, wonderful digital publication honoring our 20th anniversary available on our website to be used as a teaching tool, a historical document, and an introduction to the inner workings of our successful organization. Stay tuned as we move into the future! Energy Keepers The Energy Keepers are a very dedicated and active group of volunteers within the Labyrinth Society. They offer loving support to all members, being there for each other through life’s transitions, challenges, and celebrations. The healing power of prayer is well documented, and receiving the loving energy of more than 100 steadfast hearts and minds can have a powerful impact on any adverse situation. Requests for support and energy are made by email and then distributed to the growing number of Energy Keepers who are spread out around the world. Online Auction TLS usually holds an annual online auction to raise money for the general operating fund. The online auction gives our members another opportunity to showcase their products or artwork or share special items with the world while supporting a cause they believe in. Donating is easy and bidding is fun! Publications and Media TLS produces a variety of publications throughout the year for its membership. Publications enable TLS to communicate vital information to members regarding various updates, events, and general membership information. In addition, they provide an opportunity for our membership to share their labyrinth-related work with a variety of audiences. Publications include the Labyrinth Society eNews, the Labyrinth Pathways journal, and Caerdroia: the Journal of Mazes and Labyrinths, published by Labyrinthos. Our podcasts and multimedia productions shine a light on what the organization and its members are doing. Regional Representatives Our network of Regional Representatives can assist you in many ways. They themselves are gifted leaders in their own communities and beyond able to connect you to labyrinth information, other members, support or facilitate labyrinth workshops, walks and more. Make a point of knowing who your closest Regional Rep is, they are resourceful people to contact for assistance. A list of Regional Reps is provided on the TLS web site. If you have questions or would like to become a Regional Rep, please contact: reps@labyrinthsociety.org Research TLS encourages research about labyrinths, knowing that our members have interest in diverse fields such as mental/physical health, education, ritual, mindfulness, art/creativity, spirituality, workplace environments, theology, grief/loss, mathematics, history, various forms of therapy, community building and others; all of which are areas for research. Often by beginning with anecdotal evidence, it’s possible to discover what topics may be fruitful for more formal research projects. An archive of labyrinth research, articles, and information for researchers is available on the TLS website. The Research Committee welcomes articles/papers about labyrinth research for inclusion in the archive. We respond to requests for information, answer questions and are a sounding board for prospective researchers. Soon we plan to highlight current research on a rotating basis.. There will be time to share research ideas in this time of pandemic, and virtual spaces, and a “door prize!” - a copy of Learning with the Labyrinth: Creating Reflective Space in Higher Education by Jan Sellers and Bernard Moss.

Social Media For the past twenty years, The Labyrinth Society focused on in-person events centered around labyrinth walking, learning, and networking; activities supported by its website infrastructure and its limited social media presence. This focus changed when TLS created its 2018 vision and updated its Facebook Global Group page. In order to reflect a greater emphasis on digital, virtual communication platforms, a more robust social media presence and ways to connect more easily with the worldwide labyrinth community were required. This has resulted in the creation of a WordPress website, a Worldwide Labyrinth Locator app, increased use of the ZOOM platform for virtual events, and a more robust approach to social media through Facebook and Instagram. While the worldwide labyrinth community has yet to use all of these new innovations, their launches are just around the corner and about to burst on the labyrinth community scene. TLS’s commitment to supporting the global labyrinth community is growing as this community grows. Special Projects A Special Project is a labyrinth-centered effort organized by a member, organization, or sub-group of TLS that receives some level of support, assistance, or endorsement from TLS. All TLS members are eligible and encouraged to propose Special Projects. Project organizers interface with TLS through the Special Projects chair and remain accountable to the TLS Board of Directors for the life of the project. All applications are made to the Special Projects chair and reviewed by the Special Projects committee. For some past projects that received Special Project status, or to obtain Special Project application forms, visit the TLS website. The Kay Torrez Fund The TLS Kay Torrez Fund is used to support members who have personal circumstances preventing their ability to pay their annual TLS dues. These funds are donated by members and specifically designated for the Kay Torrez Fund. They are distributed at the discretion of the Executive Director. TLS Legacy and Lifetime Planned Giving The Labyrinth Society (TLS) has been an important part of many people’s lives, maybe even yours. Making a financial gift to The Labyrinth Society helps ensure the experiences, services, and opportunities you have known through TLS will continue to be offered now and for future generations of labyrinth enthusiasts around the world. TLS Video Labyrinths for Our Time: Places of Refuge in a Hectic World is a dynamic educational and marketing tool for any labyrinth enthusiast. This multi-faceted presentation features labyrinth experts from all over the world speaking about the value and benefit of labyrinths in many venues, including churches, prisons, hospitals, schools and universities, parks, and recreation areas. Website One important way we reach out to the world, educate, and connect is through the TLS website and social media. Have you visited the website lately? The website underwent a significant upgrade in 2008. We added a new Membership Manager and Event Registration Module with online payments in 2012. Now we are in the process of doing a complete redo of the website, adding a blog and many other new features. Everything will be easier to find. Watch for news about when the new website will be available. World Labyrinth Day An initiative of TLS, World Labyrinth Day brings people from all over the world together to walk labyrinths. It is celebrated every year on the first Saturday in May. World Labyrinth Day helps to inform and educate the public about labyrinths. Many large events are planned, but no group is too small. Additionally, individuals who wish to participate may use a finger labyrinth, draw a labyrinth, or meditate the labyrinth pattern. Worldwide Labyrinth Locator (WWLL) A joint project with Veriditas made possible by a generous grant from the Faith, Hope and Love Foundation, the WWLL is a searchable database of more than 5,600 labyrinths around the world. Wisdom Circle The Wisdom Circle is comprised of former members of the board of directors, many of whom are founding members. The purpose for designating such a group was to create a body of people with knowledge of the organization who could be called upon as needed.

Dromenons Reimagined: Heart, Mind, and the Music of the Spheres

Presenters: Laura Esculcas & Calen Rayne (USA-Portugal)

In this presentation, we will connect heart and mind on the labyrinth, a

morphogenic field connecting all labyrinths and people who have walked them, our

ancestral voices singing in harmony with the music of the spheres. Dromenon,

mandala, and labyrinth return us to our sacred center during a journey of

reconnection and renewal that restores whole -ness or holy-ness.

Laura Esculcas, EarthShamans co-founder, serves on

Veriditas Faculty, and is a Veriditas Advanced Certified

Labyrinth Facilitator, SoulCollage® facilitator, and sacred

landscape guide in Portugal. She is practitioner of Sacred

Landscapes, Acoustic Feng Shui, and the Personessence™

System of Understanding People. She has regularly served

with Veriditas as a small group facilitator in Chartres, and

teaches qualifying workshops/Labyrinth Facilitator Training

in Europe. Laura holds an M.A. in Wisdom Studies, and

facilitates wisdom journeys into Portugal's place-based

myths. Originally from the US, she worked in Silicon Valley for over ten years, and

now lives, Portugal.

Rev. Dr. Calen Rayne is a Unitarian Universalist Lay

Community Minister, Spiritual Director, co-founder of

EarthShamans, Director of Institutional Energetics at

Ubiquity University, and a Veriditas Advanced Labyrinth

Facilitator. Calen builds labyrinths, designs Shinrin Yoku

trails and meditation gardens, designs/consults on sacred

landscapes, produces energy mandalas/altars for energy

healing, and is experienced with labyrinths, reiki, kaballah,

Himalayan singing bowl, earth energies, Acoustic Feng Shui,

dowsing, contemplative brush, Egyptian Biogeometry,

alchemy, sacred geometry, Druid geomancy, medical intuitive work. He trained with

alchemists of the first religion of the Himalayas (nameless religion), known as

“patterns of heaven and earth.”

The labyrinth is both a methodology and a metaphor for living in times of whole

system transition. Jean Houston will explore emerging psychological and spiritual

patterns and ways of understanding the turnings of our time.

Dr. Jean Houston, scholar, philosopher and

researcher in human capacities, is one of the

foremost visionary thinkers and doers of our

time, and one of the principal founders of the

Human Potential Movement as well as the

field of Social Artistry (human development in

the light of social change). Jean has worked

intensively in 40 cultures and over 100

countries helping global leaders, leading

educational institutions, business

organizations, and millions of people to

enhance and deepen their own capacities

while applying these to new solutions for

challenging times. She is a prolific writer and

author of 33 books including A Passion for the

Possible, Search for the Beloved, Life Force, The

Possible Human, A Mythic Life: Learning to Live

Our Greater Story, Jump Time, What is

Consciousness, and The Wizard of Us which was featured with her interview with

Oprah on Super Soul Sunday. As advisor to UN and other international agencies in

human and cultural development, she has worked to implement some of their

extensive educational and health programs especially as they relate to the

millennium development goals. Jean and her work helped found two universities,

Pacifica and Meridian where she serves as Chancellor.

Unique Labyrinths of Costa Rica

Presenter: Ronald Esquivel (Costa Rica)

A journey through 18 unique labyrinths, expressed in graphics and short videos. We

will visit the intentions that gave rise to each one and the geometric processes of

their creation, as well as the results and reactions. In general, these processes were

based on principles of sacred geometry, sometimes including particular symbolisms,

geographic archetypes, and even specific techniques for personal growth.

Ronald Esquivel is an architect, Holistic Balance

Instructor and author of the Biocreation personal

growth program. His passion is the design of

strategies for harmonizing human energy through

applied metaphysics, as well as the creation of

habitable spaces, labyrinths and eternal knots for

meditation, based on sacred geometry. He has had

the privilege of effectively supporting others in their

processes of harmonization and conflict resolution,

of seeing novel perspectives in everyday situations

and of finding order in chaos.

Through the Looking Glass: Creativity and Renewal with the Labyrinth

Presenters: Sadelle Wiltshire & Frank Faine (USA)

As a sacred path, the labyrinth offers a way to embark upon a journey of creativity

and renewal to explore our individual and communal center. Frank and Sadelle will

introduce how the labyrinth has inspired and fostered their creative writing and art

work. They will share some of their specific practices that are sparking their current

work, individually and collaboratively.

Sadelle Wiltshire, a teaching artist from Putney, VT, holds a

special interest in facilitating meditative and contemplative

art experiences including drawing and painting labyrinths,

Celtic art, Zentangle, line drawing, textiles and more. As a

Quaker, she loves finding creative ways to foster inner and

outer peace, whether alone or in community. She is a

Veriditas Certified Facilitator, TLS Regional Representative

for Vermont, and a TLS Energy Keeper. She teaches

workshops and retreats in the US and abroad, with both

secular and non-secular audiences, and online via her

Frank Faine, a spiritual guide, Veriditas-trained labyrinth

facilitator, and retreat leader lives in Orlando, FL. A TLS

board member, he chairs TLS Special Projects Committee,

where he is working on ways to share the labyrinth

experience/walks on college university campuses across

Florida. With a rich and diverse background in

companioning, healing, and teaching, he offers spiritual

direction, labyrinth walks and retreats to all persons who

seek to discover a life affirming spiritual path. A

poet/songwriter, he is completing a book of poems/songs

exploring the mystic hospitality of the labyrinth titled The

Encircling Embrace.

Encounters with Temporary Public Art Labyrinths

Presenters: Erica Duthie & Struan Ashby (New Zealand)

Artists Erica and Struan discuss their temporary hybrid ‘art-labyrinths’ and their

unique potential as an invitation to ‘walk in community’ as part of public spaces and

events. Unusual materials and methods including tape drawing, stenciling and

painting will be demonstrated. We speak of our role as ‘kaitiaki’ (Maori for active

hosts and custodians) who accompany our labyrinth installations. Hear the

backstory of a recent socially distanced labyrinth created for our national museum

to celebrate their reopening amidst the lifting of the Covid19 lockdown in New

Zealand.

Ashby are an international

public art couple who specialize

in developing ephemeral art and

labyrinths as part of festivals,

exhibitions and public events.

They also facilitate socially

engaged art projects as part of

community residencies and run

workshops as part of their

community practice.

Their projects are characteristically novel and quirky in concept and in their use of

burgeoning field of Tape Art developed their skills as improv drawing performers

and socially engaged art practitioners. They enjoy creating unexpected art

experiences amidst public spaces that invite people to step figuratively into

imaginary worlds, and literally into their activated walking art labyrinths. As artists

who have a couple of decades of experience making and facilitating temporary

public, Erica and Struan’s evolving labyrinth projects feature an open social

engagement process in their creation and appreciation.

Kimberly Becker, CNA, one of our TLS Regional Reps in Florida, a Certified Veriditas labyrinth facilitator and employed as the Outreach Manager of a nationally recognized treatment center. Kimberly shows us that integrating the labyrinth into her work with substance use treatment and behavioral health is critical as she educates other healers on self-care and exploration. Walking the weaving paths of the labyrinth is similar to the 12 steps to recovery, making the 12 steps easily adaptable to a twelve-circuit labyrinth. Kimberly is a passionate strategic planner and imparts her vision to use labyrinths to change lives, shape communities, and be a positive impact in world healing. She formerly led Labyrinth Consultants for over 15 years, was contracted to produce the TLS educational video that is on the TLS website, and is now our special presenter sharing herself with us at our Annual Regional Rep meeting.
