    Thank you for your support

From the Principal’s Desk…………... Welcome to Term 2 Week 11 at Kilmore Primary School. Well that is it folks! Another term down and we are at the half way mark. What a wonderful term it has been. We have enjoyed excursions, incursions, interschool sports, a teacher v’s students netball game, travel expos, KPS TV episodes, singing group performances and so much more. There is certainly never a dull moment at KPS.

I would like to acknowledge the behaviour of our students this term. It has attracted some very positive comments. Our student’s behaviour at the Wallan Taster Day was outstanding and the sportsmanship at the interschool sports day was exemplary. It was great to be approached by a Foundation parent during the week who wanted to tell me how impressed she was by the behaviour of our senior students towards the younger children. Their nurturing, role modelling and willingness to help the younger children has been appreciated. I see evidence of a wonderful culture of support and positive behaviour every day that I am at this school.

On Monday, I was in my office working at lunchtime when I heard some music drifting through the corridor. At first I thought it was a CD playing and then I realised it was live music. I went to investigate and found that our singing group, led by Mr Thompson, were performing for the students. They sang a range of songs and it was so lovely to see the student gathered around the AstroTurf area as if at a concert. The girls sounded amazing and were so enthusiastic about performing. As I watched and listened, I could not help but think how lucky we are as a school to have so many opportunities to participate in extra curriculum activities like the singing group. Well done girls and Mr Thompson. I would like to wish Mr Thompson all the best for his secondment next term to work for the department in Melbourne. This is a very exciting opportunity for Mr Thompson and we wish him all the best. He will be missed and we look forward to his return in term four!

On behalf of the community, I would like to wish Anna Sloane all the best as she leaves to go on family leave next term. Anna is expecting her second child and we wish her well. The PE teacher for term three will be Mr Lenny de Cruz. We welcome him to our staff and look forward to working with him. Mr De Cruz has substantial experience as a PE teacher and comes highly recommended.

I wish you all a wonderful mid year break and look forward to working together to achieve the best for our students in semester two.

    Joey Scouts Promise Challenge

Joel in 2W has achieved a significant award in Joey Scouts. Joel worked hard to achieve the Joey Scouts Promise Challenge. To achieve his Promise Challenge Badge Joel had to complete a number of challenges including researching the history of the founder of the scouting movement, participating in community service – Joel walked his neighbours dog, completing a staged ten kilometre hike and various other tasks. Joel is the first participant to achieve the Promise Challenge Badge in the Kilmore Scouts. Congratulations Joel.

  • Hello everyone!

This time next week we will be on holidays! I’ll be spending some time in front of the fire, going on walks, sleeping in, chasing balls and playing with my doggy friends. I’ve heard that I’m also off to see the vet for my annual vaccination. Last time I was offered a treat after my injection. Mmmmm, now there’s something to look forward to….

Reports went home last week. My report said that I am

friendly, make people happy, can fall asleep anywhere

and make food disappear just by looking at it. My future

learning goals are to try and stay awake more and not

try to eat absolutely everything. What did you think of

the new report format? The last page has a quick

parent survey and my teacher friends hope that lots will

    be completed and returned.

Mrs Marr donated a bike to KPS and asked that it be raffled off to raise money for my

expenses. This was really nice of her and very generous. Some of my friends from Grade 6

have been selling raffle tickets and we get to find out on Friday who is going to have a brand

new bike to play with over the holidays. Remember to wear a helmet when you’re riding your

new bike! I hope you all know how grateful I am to everyone who helps look after me.

Below & Right: We were treated to a

    pawformance by Mr

    Thompson and the Singing

    Group on Monday at lunch

    time. I joined the audience

    and listened to some lovely

    tunes. They are a talented

    bunch!

  • I’ve kept my ears open this week and have heard some things in the yard. Here are some that I’ve remembered: “Asha, do you curl your hair? Your back is sooooooo curly!” “You’re one of those dogs that looks so grown up!” “Oh Asha, you’re so good for my confidence!” “Asha, would you like a German sausage?” “Asha, are you being a Labradawdle?” (I may have

been walking quite slowly when this was said)

I travelled far and wide this week, all without leaving KPS. ‘How did I do it?’ you might ask. Well, my Grade 5/6 friends have been researching countries as part of their Inquiry unit this term and yesterday they held their Travel Expo. It was AMAZING. I learnt so much about different climates, landmarks, languages and my favourite thing of all, food! It was a very special occasion so I was even allowed to try a tiny bit of German sausage and a dessert from Sweden and Jamaica. Delicious. I wish it was the Travel Expo every day. I think I’ve got the travel bug.

    Now to organise a

    passpawt…

  • Numeracy Student Forums

This week, representatives from each year level participated in Student Forums. The forums

provided an opportunity for students to share their thoughts on how maths is taught at Kilmore

PS. The first, and main, part of the forum was a group discussion and the last part was an

individual reflection. At the Grade 5/6 forum, students suggested introducing a lunchtime club for

students who would like to practise things they learn in class. It will be similar to Homework Club,

but run during school time and with a focus only on maths. We will trial a lunchtime maths club in

Term 3. The forums will run throughout the year and we look forward to including more ‘Student

Voice’ in our KPS maths curriculum.

Term 3 What You Can Do @ Home to Help Prepare

F Counting Practise counting everyday items. For example, how many white cars can you spot on a trip somewhere? How many letterboxes can you count? Count the washing as you hand it on the line.

    1 Division / Sharing

Look for ways to share items. For example, if you bake 12 cupcakes and there are four people in your family, how many cupcakes can each person have if you share them equally?

2 Place Value Read and write two and three digit numbers. Order them. Work out which number is the largest/smallest. Talk about how many hundreds, tens and ones are in particular num-bers. Eg. 483 has 4 hundreds, 8 tens and 3 ones.

    3 & 4 Multiplication & Division

Practise times table facts. Solve division problems using times table facts. Notice when you use multiplication to solve everyday problems.

5 & 6 Time Read analogue clock times throughout the day. Convert 12 hour time to 24 hour time. Work out the duration of events. Use a timetable to plan a trip. Eg. If you go to the mov-ies and the movie starts at 11:30am, what time should you leave home?

  • Author Visit - Oliver Phommavanh

Our Grade 3 and 6 students were treated to a special visit last week by children’s author Oliver Phommavanh. Oliver is a standup comedian and children’s author. He told the students he gets his ideas for his books from his toys – his favourite toy was ‘Bubbles’ from Power Puff Girls. The students found his presentation engaging and funny and Olivier appealed to their sense of humor. Will from grade 6 said that Oliver’s books sounded very funny and he enjoyed hearing his life story. Joey liked how he got his ideas and that he is a comedian because he would like to be a comedian one day too.

Dear Parents/Guardians, Next term, students at Kilmore Primary school will be competing in the Australia and New Zealand Word Mania competition. This online spelling competition runs for a few weeks in term 3. Currently, the students are able to access the APP/Website to practice their spelling and the activities that are part of the competition. To give our students the best chance at winning some of the prizes on offer for our school, and to improve their spelling, it would be great if you could access the practice activities over the school holidays. Students in grades 3-6 with an iPad will be required to have this APP downloaded and ready to use on day 1 of term 3. It can be downloaded from the App store, free of charge. All students will receive their own unique log in details, which they use to log in to the website/APP and participate in the activities. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact. Regards, Kylie Jeffs & Simone Parkes [email protected] [email protected]
