Sir Knight John James Sheil
March 4, 1935 – April 16, 2018
John James Sheil, beloved husband of Wilma Rohloff Sheil, and devoted father and grandfather. He was a retired
member of the Sheriff’s Department of Nassau County, NY, where he was a correctional officer for over 20 years.
Survived by his wife, Wilma; his daughter, Marjorie Sheil of Wagener, SC; grandchildren, Richard Sheil and
Angela Smeilus; great grandchildren, Margaret Rose Smeilus and Luke Patrick Smeilus; brother, Patrick Sheil;
sister, Eileen Tart, as well as many nieces and nephews, and dear friends. John was predeceased by his son, Shawn
William Sheil.
His family and his fellow Knight Brothers celebrate his life and the person that he was, and deeply mourn his
passing.

Brothers
This past weekend SK Brother Mike Cousino and I attended the South Carolina Knights of
Columbus 97th State Convention and I’m happy to report that the Convention went smoothly with
no arguments, contentions or issues to plague the event. A new slate of State Officers was duly
elected and several honorariums were passed without issue. All in all a very productive weekend.
At the conclusion of the Convention awards were given out recognizing the achievements of many
Councils and our Council 11991 was recognized with the 2017 – 2018 Columbus HOPE
Foundation, Inc. Silver Achievement Award and the 2017 – 2018 Inter Council Competition
Honor Award. Well done Brother Knights!
Our May Business meeting will include the reading of the proposed slate of Officers for the 2018
– 2019 Fraternal year to formalize the slate for elections to be held at the June Business Meeting.
While the Trustees have worked diligently to complete the slate of Officers, nominations from the
floor will also be encouraged at the elections in June and once the elections conclude, plans will be
underway for the Installation Banquet on June 21st.
And while we turn to look forward to the elections and installation banquet, it is also fitting that
we take a moment to look back on the tremendous amount of work that you, my Brothers, have
tackled with the gusto of an Olympic athlete. While obstacles may have arisen on the path to
completion, you without question overcame them and met success and your goals. There are too
many to capture with this message from your Grand Knight, but you all are owed a debt of
gratitude for all that you do.
With the need for brevity at our most recent Socials, and the need to skip a Social in March as we
worked on the Lenten Fish Fry’s, we have lagged behind in naming and acknowledging our
monthly Knight of the Month and Family of the Month as well as Youth of the Quarter. It is my
goal to make up for those omissions and call upon those Knights, Families and Youth, to be
recognized during this Social in May, hoping to leave a clean slate for the newly elected Grand
Knight to begin anew with the July Social.

So yes, summer is also upon us but there will be no rest for the weary as we continue to grow our
Council, support our Church and Priests and help build the Domestic Church with a focus on our

District Deputy’s Message
Vivat Jesus!
As I attended our 97th Knights of Columbus State Convention I had the pleasure letting everyone
in South Carolina know just how much you all do!
Columbus Hope Awards -3 of our 4 councils were presented awards:
11991 with a Silver achievement Award (144.56% of their goal)
11471 with a Gold Achievement Award (184.99% of their goal)
6726 with a Platinum Achievement Award (200.17 % of their goal)
For the State Charity Raffle 6726 did 124% of their goal
The Silver Rosary award did not go to 11471 which surprised me as they had done about 1500
rosaries in the 2 week period! Very impressive, the winner had done only 2000.
My favorite section is the ICC or Inter-Council Competition. This where the councils tell what
they did throughout the whole year-only 11991 took on this task.
Next year’s Convention will be held somewhere in the top of the state, maybe Greenville,
Spartanburg, or Rock Hill. It is the opportunity meet the many other Knights in our state; learn
what and how they do things. But the best part is seeing friends that you haven’t seen in a
while.
Now it is time to consider who your leaders will be for the next year. Contemplate on what you
can or could do to make your council better.

Our Field Agent’s Message
In case some of you haven't already noticed, the economy is strongly improving. So much so
in fact that the Feds feel comfortable enough to start raising interest rates. No why is this
important to the Knights of Columbus? Its important because everything we do within the life
insurance realm as well as our annuities are tied into the bond markets which are vastly
affected by the federal interest rates. When rates go up, our policies and annuities go up as
well too.
At this time last year, our annuities were paying out a mere 1.5%. Now after four fed rate
increases over the past year, we are now paying out 2.5% with the feds planning to raise rates
two more times this year and up to three possibly next year. This is important because if you
have an annuity that is over a year old and was guaranteed less than 2.5% well you are now
receiving 2.5% interest and will go up time the feds raise rates. On the life insurance side, with
the rates going up, our cash flow through dividends and interest are increasing as well too
resulting in higher cash available as well as a faster increase on the death benefit as well too.
The numbers are steadily getting back to where we were pre 2008 and a bright future is
certainly in store for all of us. These are certainly exciting times again with being able to serve
our Brother Knights and their families with an even better product, all while helping to keep
the dream of the Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney alive and well to, but most
importantly as well Honor the Lord in all that we do. If you have any questions at all please

St. Francis Caracciolo Café
Council 11991 members and wives volunteer at the St. Francis Caracciolo Café every
second Tuesday serving from 11:30 – 1:30 at the Community Center of the Immaculate
Conception Church. The Café is a Soup Kitchen Ministry that serves the homeless, needy
and lonely people of the community. The café offers food and fellowship. Come join us and
volunteer!

Prayer for Our Country’s Military
“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life. Keep them close to You and
help them live the Commandments. Lord, Jesus, give them courage to serve their Country with
honor and dignity. Be with them when they are in danger strengthening them when they face
hardships. And Lord, grant that, when their service is finished, they may return to us sound in
mind, body and soul. In particular, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in
service to their fellow man and Country. Amen.”

Helping Hands of Goose Creek Annual U.S. Postal Service Food Drive
On Saturday May 12, 2018 the U.S. Postal Service will hold their annual Food Drive benefiting
our local charity Helping Hands of Goose Creek. They send out reminders to the residents of
Goose Creek to put out food donations on their mail boxes. The food is collected as the couriers
make their mail deliveries then the couriers deliver the donations to Helping Hands as they end
their routes.
This Food Drive generates a lot of food delivered in a short period of time. Helping Hands is
asking the Council to provide help in processing and storing the donations. Workers will be posted
at Helping Hands to receive and process the donations and also at their storage unit nearby.
We predict that 6 Knights can accomplish the task. The time frame is 11:00-17:00. Brother Mike
Cousino and I will be working the duration. If you can help, please RSVP Lenny or Mike so we
can get a count on available labor. You can also work the duration or any time you can spare in
your schedules.
Please plan on parking near the street at the Royal Lanes Bowling Alley on Central Avenue then
walk back to Helping Hands at the end of the cul-de-sac on Commerce Place.

For it does not matter what we claim to be,
it matters what we are and what “we” claim to be
The Knights of Columbus has been often called “The strong right arm of the church”. And to
many, the Fourth Degree, is the visible arm of the Knights of Columbus. The Patriotic Degree is
the ultimate completion of the journey into the Knights. A journey that upon completion, award
you the honors of full Knighthood and the respect of being addressed as “Sir Knight.”
As you are well aware the Fourth Degree was very visible in the month of April. There were
times of jubilation and times of sorrow. It is always a proud moment when we don the regalia and
carry our nations colors. That we did as the Color Guard presented the colors during the opening
ceremonies at the 2018 Special Olympics Spring Games on April 17th. During the same week we
then mourned the loss of Sir Knight John Sheil and served as the Honor Guard at the Funeral
Mass. On April 24th the Honor Guard was visibly present at the Immaculate Conception
Confirmation Mass and then again served at Divine Redeemer for their confirmands. So to be
brief, we have been exceptionally busy during the month of April. The activity of the Color Guard
and the Honor Guard totally revolves around the youth of today and our leaders of tomorrow by
standing firm in support of the order, proudly serving our country, unwavering support of the faith
and honoring the legacy of Knighthood.
Interested? Talk to any Sir Knight about their experiences and what it feels like to wear the
emblem of our Order and be addressed as “Sir Knight”. The requirements are you need to be a
Third Degree member in “Good Standing”

Evangelization – The Mission of the Laity
“That the lay faithful may fulfill their specific mission, by responding with creativity to the challenges that face
the world today.”
Mercy in the Eye of the Beholder: “A beautiful illustration of two-fold Eucharistic love, namely, for Christ and for our neighbor, is seen in the life of Mother
Teresa of Calcutta. She was once asked, ‘From where do you find the strength to take care of all the difficult cases that
you encounter each day? The dying destitutes in the streets of Calcutta? The lepers? The abandoned babies? The AIDS
victims? The homeless and the hungry?’ Mother answered with her simple yet profound wisdom, ‘I begin each day by
going to Mass and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, hidden under the simple form of bread. Then I go out into the
streets and find the same Jesus hidden in the dying destitute people, in the lepers, in the abandoned babies, in the AIDS
people, and in the homeless and the hungry. It is the same Jesus.’ So too for us, works of mercy must be the fruit of our

Veteran’s Victory Home, Walterboro: To honor our continuing patriotic commitment, we ask that all continue to bring
toiletry articles to any of our meetings and socials throughout the year. These items will be collected and shared between the
Walterboro Veteran’s Victory Home and the Felician Sisters in Kingstree. The Veteran’s Victory Home also asks for craft
items, books (prefer large print), periodicals and newspapers. Some of these items are used in their therapy sessions. The
adult coloring books with colored pencils are exceptionally popular.
Our Lady of Joyful Hope: The Felician Sisters in Kingstree continue to help those in desperate need with the basics of
food, clothing and shelter, and humbly ask for help in replenishing their pantry with food, toiletry and hygiene items. We
will continue to collect toiletry and hygiene items to help with restocking. Therefore, at each meeting, social or gathering we
will have a box available in which to put any donated items. The Felician Sisters at the St. Anne Felician Center remain
humbly thankful for our donations and support.

National Right to Life - Quick Facts
From an article by Matthew Lee Anderson:
“What happens at the margins of life has a peculiar significance to what goes on in the middle. Births and deaths play an
exaggerated role in our self-understanding, just as beginnings and endings have an outsized influence on our appreciation of
novels. At the edges of life, we see human beings in conditions that our agency as adults obscures, but which often mark
significant swaths of our mature lives: dependency and need, isolation and invisibility. The pro-life investment in opposing
euthanasia is motivated on the same terms as its opposition to abortion…”
For the pro-lifer, there is no clearer instance of the marginalized, the voiceless, and the vulnerable than in the womb — and
no more profound source of wonder at the limitless possibilities that human life is capable of achieving. The early embryo
looks nothing like us, has none of our capabilities, drains the mother’s resources, and often requires the mother to sacrifice
many of her interests. If in these conditions one can see something worthwhile, something that can be a benefit or a blessing
to the world even when unwanted, then one can start to glimpse why pro-lifers are so animated and so patient in their efforts.
In our world the pro-life “position” is radically counter-cultural. This is one important reason it resonates more and more
with young people.”

PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF MAY:
The Month of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Catholic practice of assigning a special devotion to each month goes back to the early 16th century. Since the best
known of those devotions is probably the dedication of May as the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it might come as a
surprise that it wasn't until the late 18th century that this devotion arose among Jesuits in Rome. In the early years of the 19th
century, it quickly spread throughout the Western Church, and, by the time of Pope Pius IX's declaration of the dogma of
the Immaculate Conception in 1854, it had become universal.
May crownings and other special events in May in honor of Mary, such as public recitation of the rosary, stem from this time.
Sadly, such communal events are rare today, but we can take the month of May as an opportunity to renew our own devotion
to the Mother of God by dusting off our rosaries and adding a few more Marian prayers to our daily routine. Parents, in
particular, should encourage Marian devotion in their children, since the non-Catholic Christians they encounter today often
downplay (if not denigrate) the role that the Blessed Virgin played in our salvation through her fiat -- her joyous "Yes" to the
will of God.
This short prayer is very similar in structure to the Angelus, and in it, we invoke the Blessed Virgin Mary for her help in
safeguarding our virtue. The first verses recall Mary's own chastity (through the doctrine of her perpetual virginity), setting
her up as our example. Then the prayer turns to our request: that Mary may obtain for us the grace to avoid mortal sin. This
is a very good prayer to pray at times when we are feeling tempted and afraid of falling into sin.

for me the grace to please Him always and in all things. Amen”.
PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for our citizens, and for an end to the continuing, and seemingly
escalating, senseless violence in our country. Also, pray and for the safety of all members of Law Enforcement, Fire Service
and Emergency Services. Let us also pray that our national leadership will make decisions supporting religious freedom and
Right to Life with positive effects on our entire Country.
PRAYER FOR OUR RELIGIOUS: We ask for your continued prayers for SK Jerry Caoile and SK James Baker as they
continue their studies for the Diaconate program, and for our Adorno and Diocesan Seminarians and those other young men
and women progressing in their religious discernment and studies.
PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our military servicemen and women - those who are now where many
of us once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those in public safety.
