Are Stephen Ministers Counselors? Stephen Ministers are not counselors; they are trained lay caregivers. Their role is to listen and care — not to give advice or counsel. Stephen Ministers are also trained to recognize when a care receiver’s need exceeds what they can
provide. When that happens they work with care receivers to help them receive the level of care
they really need.
How Can I Get More Information? For more information on Stephen Ministry,
please contact one of our Stephen Leaders. Diane Bless, Karen Quick or
Jim Wottring.

ALL ABOUT ME ...
Chris Brown, joined our First Church team this month as our new Facilities Manager. He says to think of him as a property manager that oversees a large office complex — or in this case — a large church! Born at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, WA, Chris’ family relocated to Longwood in 1978. After graduating from Seminole State College, he worked in the family construction business before going into real estate which he has done for the past 31 years. Chris remains active as a Broker in the real estate business helping buyers and sellers reach their real estate goals. As the former Chair of the Board of Trustees and working tireless hours on improving and maintaining our 15-acre church property, Chris brings a lot of experience to the table. My duties at First Church will be a continuation of my business, while also managing the property and assets of our church, he says. When not working you can find Chris on his Harley! One thing people would be surprised to know is that Chris has a lot of tattoos. His favorite movie is Top Gun and Law and Order is his favorite T.V. show. Pizza and ribs are his go-to meals. His vacation spot is on a cruise ship anywhere in the ocean and the Holy Land is on his bucket list. When asked what was the best thing about First Church, Chris said, the quality of people. Both the staff and committee members who give so much behind the scenes to make church happen each week. Please welcome Chris to our church family!
Your Staff Parish Relations Committee has the privilege of
overseeing the team who makes First Church a great place to Worship, Fellowship, Learn
and Serve.
We want to make sure every member has the opportunity to get to know the people working hard behind the scenes every day to make it possible to fulfill
our missions: Following Jesus to make
disciples for the transformation of the world.
In this issue, we would like to introduce you to:

MISSIONS AT FIRST CHURCH OVIEDO
At First Church Oviedo we are excited about the summer opportunities to serve our community and beyond. We will remain actively involved in our Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, Orange County Academy and the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. Make sure you check out our church website, Facebook, Instagram and the Church Bulletin Announcements for the latest local happenings and opportunities for you to serve.
Please be in prayer for those who are going on mission trips this summer. Here is some information about the two trips our church families are involved in this summer:
Puerto Rico / Thirst Missions / June 2nd – June 7th This weekend nine adults and youth will leave for Puerto Rico to serve the community of Caguas. We will stay at a local church (Iglesia Cristiana Carasmatica de Caguas) and work alongside another church from Indiana to help this community in their great time of need.
During our mission trip we will be fully engaged in ministry. Even though it’s been well over one year since Hurricane Maria hit the island, the people are still suffering from the devastation of this storm. We will help residents and churches rebuild their lives by cleaning, painting, moving debris, etc. We also will do home visits to serve those who are unable to leave their homes. We will bring them personalized gift bags and serve them through prayer and worship.
Beverly, Kentucky / Red Bird Mission / July 28th – August 3rd Red Bird Mission is located in the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky. The mission was founded in 1921 in response to severe poverty and economic needs, and has served this community and numerous capacities since that time.
Our team of 21 will drive to Red Bird on Sunday, July 28th, and will participate in their work camp. We will stay on-site and will work alongside about 160 other volunteers during our assigned work week. Overall, Red Bird Work Camp involves over 2,500 participants each year! Here is how they describe Work Camp on their website (www.rbmission.org):
Work Camp strives to provide home repair for low-income community residents and maintenance for Mission buildings and grounds. Some
examples of work projects are roof replacement, small room additions, painting, building porches or ramps, and grounds keeping. Other light duty
work is available such as cutting soup upc’s, office work, craft and community store helpers, and recycling. In addition to providing mission
opportunities, we strive to provide an atmosphere where participants grow spiritually and gain a personal understanding of mission. Evenings are
spent in Christian fellowship and learning about the diverse ministries of Red Bird Mission.
Please mark your calendar for Friday, September 6th. We have reserved an evening at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission for all of us from First Church Oviedo to share in a wonderful night of fun and worship with the residents at the Mission. We will plan an event that involves children and adults. We are currently in the planning stages of this event (if you’d like to assist just let me know) but we know it’s going to be a great night. EVERYONE is welcome. We will have on-line sign-ups soon. I am so happy to be a part of First Church Oviedo. May God continue to use all of you to make a difference in Oviedo, Orlando and beyond for the sake of the gospel and our Lord Jesus Christ!!

CHILDREN’S HOME
Thank you to everyone who has helped with the Children’s Home this past school year. We are grateful for the wonderful volunteers who helped with the Adopt-a-
Cottage program, as well as those who have contributed to the End of the Year Pool Party, the Graduation, and the many other items donated to the home.
Love, Margaret Morris
ORANGE COUNTY ACADEMY
Another year has come to an end at Orange County Academy. We are so grateful to all who have joined hands in making life a little brighter for both the teachers and students at OCA this year. Many thanks go to Judy Jones and her beautiful dogs, Kelley and Kacey, who have visited the students each week. Their presence has brought peace and tranquility to the classroom. Thanks, too, to Brad Merrell and all his mentors who have
met with their child every week, bringing a bright spot to their day. How nice it is for these children to know someone really cares about them. The smiles on their faces as they head to the picnic tables with their mentor is worth a whole lot of money, my friends. Thank you, Brad, for creating this wonderful program. We also thank Brad Merrell and Lannie Holland for being the bus drivers on the various field trips this year. They have eagerly accepted these requests which have allowed the children to experience wonderful opportunities outside of Bithlo. And thanks to Pastor Brian for "showing up" each week for chapel with our middle and high schoolers. To all of you who have brought food, donated clothes, or who helped with parties, THANK YOU. We pray the children will have a safe and fun summer and that they will know we will be back again in August to continue our mission with them.

JUNE CIRCLE MEETINGS
On Saturday, May 11th UMW President
Amanda Ayala graciously thanked Frankie Crews
and Annette Pursley for hosting their 6th Annual
Mother’s Day Brunch and welcomed a record
number of people who attended this beloved event.
The Fellowship Hall was beautifully
decorated as the theme for this year’s Brunch was
entitled Bake Someone Happy. The stage was
transformed into a retro kitchen that displayed a
number of old and new kitchenwares. Each table’s
centerpiece creatively displayed either a gorgeous
vintage colander strainer or flour sifter flower
arrangement. Lovely aprons were exhibited
throughout the room.
Maureen Riddley from the Friendship Circle
lit the Christ candle. JB Bailey from Faith Circle
gave an inspirational devotion on mothers, followed
by prayer and the blessing of the food.
One and all took pleasure in delightful
fellowship while enjoying a delicious Dominick’s
catered brunch which consisted of assorted (bacon
and spinach) quiches, Caesar salad and a slice of
cantaloupe with a yummy berry trifle for dessert.
Our very own United Methodist Men served the
meal — thank you for making us all feel so special!!!
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning’s
entertainment. The Jackson Heights Middle School
“Constellations” Saxophone Ensemble blessed the
audience with their amazing talent as they performed
two beautiful musical arrangements. Also, our very
own church quartet, Wing and a Prayer sang a
collection of up tempo gospel hymns truly enjoyed
by all.
Flower arrangements were presented as gifts
to both the youngest mom and the most mature mom
attending the morning Brunch. Congratulations
ladies!!!
Linda Slavik was the lucky raffle winner and
recipient of a beautiful handmade apron. Everyone
took home a Bake Someone Happy dessert cookbook
which consisted of favorite recipes from our UMW
mothers and grandmothers.
Frankie and Annette kindly thanked everyone for their outpouring of love and assistance in making this Mother’s Day Brunch so special. Bev Smith
from Ruth Circle closed in prayer.
