The Kims In Koutiala
May, 2016
Koutiala Hospital for Women and Children—10th Year Anniversary Celebration
In early February, the Koutiala Hospital for Women and Children cele-
brated its 10th anniversary. Almost a thousand people attended the
festivity including local and regional government officials. It was a
great testimony to hear the impact of the Hospital in the region since
its dedication ten years ago. We pray that the Lord will continue to use
Koutiala Hospital to reach not only the people of Mali but beyond with
the gospel for
His glory.
Praise God!
In April, we attended the CMDA’s (Christian & Medical Dental Association) annual con-
ference for healthcare professionals serving overseas. Over 700 field workers repre-
senting 53 countries participated in the conference which was held in Greece. Dan ob-
tained some continuing medical education credits and also was able to network with
other surgeons working all over Africa. It was also a time for spiritual renewal and social
refreshment for us and our children. A week before the conference, we met up with
Dan’s sister and her family in Egypt. They generously treated us to a wonderful vacation
which included quad riding in the Sinai desert, visiting the Pyramids, snorkeling in the
Red Sea, and sailing on the Nile. After the conference we extended our time in Greece
on the island of Crete to have a

We returned to Mali just in time for the arrival of
Medcycle for Mali’s first 40 foot container. We
thank God for the many
helping hands that gath-
ered supplies, sorted
them, packed the contain-
er and donated financially.
It was one of the smooth-
est deliveries we experi-
enced despite the hot
weather. Even the cus-
toms agent was impressed
with the organization of
the container. We were blessed with two porta-
ble digital x-ray machines, ultrasounds and anes-
thesia machines from Children’s Healthcare of
Atlanta, Dan’s former workplace.

God’s Hands Working
Please pray for Youssouf, a young
Christian man who had a seizure
and fell into a fire. He received
horrible burns that led to the
amputation of both of his arms.
If you know anyone who works
with arm prosthesis, please con-
tact us. We would love for him
to be independent and use his
arms again.
Christian Surgeons (PAACS) resident Yves, arrived last week to begin his pediatric surgery
rotation under Dan. He comes from Galmi Hospital, a mission hospital in Niger, and will be
staying in Koutiala for two months with his family. He has already proven to be a tremen-
dous help to Dan.
Prayers Needed
Dan has already hit the ground running with mny
pediatric patients awaiting surgery. One such case
is Ina, a six year old girl who was sent here fro Ni-
ger. She swallowed some cleaning solution which
destroyed her esophagus. Dan will have to replace
her esophagus by pulling her stomach up into her
chest and reconnecting it to her esophagus in her
neck. Please pray for this very complex operation.

Teaching Literacy
For a month before we left for vacation, I (Julie) taught a
literacy class at the hospital for a group of long-term pa-
tients and caregivers. I was only supposed to teach Pierre
( the young man on my left) who recently became a Chris-
tian and was very eager to learn to read Bambara so he
could read God’s Word. But soon others joined. All the
women have never stepped foot in a classroom so it’s
been amazing to see their progress. It’s also a joy to see
how they encourage each other not only in reading but
also in faith. Some are not followers of Christ but God is
softening their hearts. Prayer and Praise
1. Praise God for all His work at Koutiala Hospital for the past ten
years.
2. Praise God for the safe and smooth arrival of Medcycle for Mali’s
first container.
3. Praise for new friends for our kids as several new families have
joined the work at the Hospital.
4. Praise for a restful and refreshing family vacation.
5. Pray for our transition back to life, work and ministry in Mali. We
need strength and endurance especially during hot season.
6. Pray for a rich pediatric surgery experience for Yves and his family.
7. Pray God will multiply Dan’s time as he operates and oversees the
unpacking and setting up of all the medical equipment that came on
the container. Pray that all the machines will work.
8. Pray for two nurses who will be joining our team in the next few
months, Mariam and Brittany.
