(Not For Publication)
Young Terry Lambert (John Savage) returns homeunannounced after spending two years in prison on arape charge. He was sentenced on the testimony ofTina Moore (Sue Bernard) along with four otherboys , although he is innocent of the act. Due to adeep-seated psychosis, Terry is incapable of havingsexual relations, but fantasizes with 'girlie' typemagazines instead. His mother, Thelma Lambert
(Ann Sothern) , plumpish but still pretty , is surprisedwhen Terry appears at the door, and bursts into tearsof joy upon seeing him. Thelma has been left a largeVictorian house by an admirer which she has turnedinto a rooming home for elderly ladies; and this ishow she has supported herself and her son over theyears. Thelma allows herself a few pleasures such aseating popcorn by the can, watching old movies onTV , and collecting stray cats which are constantly inattendance, but her main purpose in life is her devotion to Terry. Shortly after his return Thelma lifts herown ruling by renting a small room in the rear to LoriDavis (Cindy Williams) , a young girl who has cometo Hollywood from Tuscon to be a model. Meanwhile,Terry has made plans to even the score with Tina who
he follows in a wild chase sequence which culminates inher driving her car over a cliff which bursts into flames. Some days later Terry pays a late call on his lawyer
Rhea Bensen (Ruth Roman) , whom he feels has donehim an injustice by not getting him off free. At knifepoint he forces her to drink an entire bottle of liquor, and then leaving her passed out on the floor , dousesthe room with lighter fluid and tosses in a flaming
pillow before he exits. Thelma is becoming suspiciousof Terry's involvement in the deaths by this time, andshe accuses him of it which he vehemently denies.Anxious not to believe his implication, she quicklyaccepts his denial , kisses him, and says she knew hecouldn't do such a horrible thing. One night Loricomes home and finds Terry f1xing her shower. Sheprovokes him into kissing her - " I've never done it in
a bath tub before," she says. In his mind's eye Terryhas quick flashes of the rape, and he grabs Lori and·begins to kiss her fiercely. When she cries out, "You're
crazy!" he shoves her down in the tub , rips her blouse, and then in a sudden frenzy strangles her. In the morning Thelma finds Terry still in Lori's bathroom in acatatonic stage. They stay together in the room untilit is dark , then Thelma sends Terry for a U-haultrailer, and they put Lori's body in a garbage can, drive it to the dump and throw it over a cliff. It isbeginning to rain as they arrive back at the house. Inthe kitchen Thelma mixes Terry his favorite drink, aglass of chocolate milk, and she says to herself. "He
has about as much chance as a snowball in hell! " Then
she puts in a large dose of a deadly poison for she
realizes there is no hope for him.Dead now, she holds Terry's head in her arms and
hums "Rock-a-bye-baby," and in the distance we hearthe sound of police siren on the way to the Lambert
house ; the call placed by a next-door-neighbor, Spinster-ish Louise (Luana Anders) , who has been sexually rejected by Terry, and spying on their activities, has her own final revenge.

With the exception of some exterior shots "TheKilling Kind" was filmed in an actual old Victorianmansion in the Larchmont area of Los Angeles belonging to a Dr. and his wife and children who lived
there during the entire shooting schedule. The rental of the house , and the problems involved,
were beyond the original conception, but one can secin the final film how very well this location works forthe film .
An amusing incident revolves around the fact thatthe non-English speaking Spanish maid was constantlybeing displaced from her small room in the rear of thehouse in order to shoot scenes there - and eventuallyshe gave up and went back to her own country.
The burtal choking scene wherein the boy kills thegirl in the bathtub was shot in the bathrooom of themaid's room; and she was astounded to hear thescreams coming from this area.
For the "rat Scene" the animals were provided by
Moe diSesso. the same trainer who worked on " Willard and "Ben." Fo r one shot where she is a body in agarbage can actress Cindy Williams had to lay on theground and let the rat actually run over her face - shewas not delighted with this to say the least!
All of the cats that appear in the film and performso admirably are all trained movie cats - but the"meows" were put in at a later date. For the scenewere the white cat (Penny) is supposed to be strangledand hangs limp, one of the town's top vets (Dr. Friedman was called in to administer the ca t a sedative andit was no way painful to the animal.
Th e mynah bird used in the film is one that belongsto Bart and Flo's Pet Shop on Melrose in Hollywood

An n Sothern who danced and sang in a dozen ormore Metro musicals , taught John Savage how to" jitterbug" and to "truck" for an amusing dancesequence in the film - 22 year old John is too youngto remember those dances.
It was mind over matter when John Savage wasrequired to go into the icy (and it was) swimmingpool for important night scenes in the picture - therest of the cast and crew were swathed in heavy coatsand mufflers. John said it was all a matter of concentration and that he didn't seem to notice the cold -nor does it show on the screen!
This will make the sixth motion picture for the producing/ directing team of George Edwards (producer)
and director Curtis Harrington- others include :
"Queen of Blood""Journey to the Red Planet""Games"
"How Awful About Allan""What's the Matter with Helen?"
That's a real white dead cat that Miss Sothern findsin the garbage can - one put to sleep by the SPCAand utilized by the film company.
Peter Brocco (the father) had to learn how tooperate a wheel chair and wear a hearing aid for hisrole in the film .
In the film John Savage can neither sing nor playthe guitar- in real life he has been a professionalsinger, plays beautifully, and has written songs.

Because of her starring roles inso many MGM Musicals and the"Masie" films also made at MGM,and the two top comedy series "Private Secretary" and the "AnnSothern Show," people are apt toforget that Miss Sothern is alsoone of the most capable dramaticactresses around and to prove itshe runs the gaumut of emotionsfrom comedy to stark tragedy inthe new motion picture "The Killing Kind." Miss Sothern plays'Thelma Lambert,' the mother of apsycopathic son who runs a boarding home for elderly ladies, andthe stunning suspense thriller eventually leads to murder and one ofthe most unusual endings in filmhistory.
A legendary beauty, for themother role Miss Sothern allowedherself to be photographed withoutbenefit of special lighting, andrather than the usual parade ofglamorous Hollywood clothes herentire wardrobe in the film consistsof "mumus,' negligees, and housecoats, as she insisted on completeauthenticity for her characterization.
For her role in the film AnnSothern was required to eat popcorn and drink Dr. Pepper constantly (as part of the character) -neither of which items she wants tosee again after the many takes andquantities she had to consume.
The "old ladies" in the film -
playing tennants of Thelma Lamberts' guest home - were actuallytenants of the Hollywood RoyalGuest Home in Hollywood, andthey were thrilled to be playingroles in a motion picture - eventhe day during the filming of the"dream sequence" under the OldVenice pier when the tide came inand all were sent running.
In the film Ann Sothern is alsoan ex-photographer in a niteclubin real life she is a superb cameraman, has won awards. and has anextensive collection of very expensive camera equipment.
Actress Cindy Williams was required to spend two days in thebathtub soaking wet for the stran-gulation scene in the picture - andas a corpse being dumped into agarbage can. Fortunately for her astandin was used as the body in thecan that is dumped over a cliffand this standin had to spend eighthours inside the garbage can forshooting scenes at Bradley's Dumpin Sun Valley.
The laundromat was an actuallocation on Beverly Boulevard andthe cast and crew had an addedtreat when they brought in theirdirty linen and it was launderedduring the filming of these scenes!
John Savage had to consumegallons of chocolate milk in thepicture - and if it is a popular suc
cess will undoutedly start a wholenew trend toward drinking milkmixed with chocolate.
Little did the bathers at VeniceBeach know that a "rape" scenewas being shot just a little ways upfrom where they were lying in thesun. The girl, Sue Bernard, is aformer Pl ayboy Mag Playmate ofthe Month -and the event wasbeing covered by Playboy magazinefor yet another spread on the gorgeous red-headed Mi ss Bernardwho pl ays the ill-fated Tina Moorein the motion picture.
Cindy Williams, who plays LoriDavis in the picture, alternatedbetween scenes for her role in theFrancis Ford Coppola film "The
Conversation" in which she co-starswith Gene Hackman, a nd the "TheKilling Kind"- "The Conversation"was being filmed in Frisco!
CURTIS HARRINGTON(Director)
Curtis Harr ington was the executive assistant to the late Jerry Waldat 20th Century-Fox for sevenyears, wrote several screenplays (including "Mardi Gras" for Pa tBoone), and functioned as associate producer on a dozen Wald films, and completed the Joanne Wood
ward starrer "The Stripper." Following this he wrote and directed"Night Tide,'' starring Dennis Hopper; and "Queen of Blood" starringJohn Saxon, Dennis Hopper, andBasil Rathbone, a low-budgetscience fiction film for AmericanInternational that received glowingreviews from the critics, and whichled to a long term contract atUniversal Studios. His first film forUniversal (on which he also coauthored the original story) was"Games,'' a suspense thriller starring the Oscar-winning Simone Sig-
RUTH ROMAN
Ruth Roman, a stellar performerknown for her starring roles in ascore of motion pictures, plays therole of a lady attorney ("RheaBenson") in the new suspense thriller "The Killing Kind." Eventhough her role was not the largestpart in the script, Miss Roman wasso entranced with this unusualvehicle that she signed to play therole at once, and her scenes withyoung male lead, John Savage, provide some of the most suspenseful
and exciting in the motion picture. One sequence require Miss Romanto be forced to consume an entirebottle of liquor (water coloredwith tea), and it was quite a featwhen the directer called for thescene to be shot over and overagain to achieve the final perfection.A born trouper, Miss Roman madeno complaint when her scenes shotuntil five o'clock in the morning forseveral nights in a row, and RuthRoman fans everywhere will bedelighted to see her in this devastating performance.
GEORGE EDWARDS(Producer)
George Edwards left MGM aftera number of years to produce theWest Coast production of Tennessee Williams' "Suddenly Last Summer," which received some of thebest notices from critics in LAtheatre history. In addition to thishe produced N ikos Kazantsakis'"Sodom and Gomorrah" for theUCLA Professional Theatre Groupwith an all-star cast; and BenHecht's "Winkelberg" at the StageSociety with Robert Ellenstein,
Mariette Hartley, Stuart Margolin ,and Jenny Hecht in the cast. Laterhe joined forces with the directorCurtis Harrington to produce"Queen of Blood" for AmericanInternational, a science-fiction thriller starring Dennis Hopper andJohn Saxon; and then "Journey tothe Red Planet" with Basil Rathbone. Edwards next produced "TheNightcrawlers" (Bobby Van/Mamie Van Doren) and "Prehistoric Planet" with Wendell Corey. It was "Pl anet of Blood" that wonHarrington and Edwards a longterm contract with UniversalStudios, and their first film was"Games," for which they also wrotethe original story. I t starred Simone
Signore!, Katherine Ross, and JamesCaan , and which received excellent
noret, and two newcomers whowere catapuled to stardom- JamesCaan, and Katherine Ross. The filmreceived plaudits from film criticsaround the world, and is now considered a classic in this genre. Otherfilm directing credits include"What's The Matter with Helen?"starring Shelley Winters, DebbieReynolds, and Dennis Weaver; and"Who Slew Auntie Roo?'' starring
Shelley Winters and Sir Ralph Richardson filmed in England. In television Curtis Harrington directed"How Awful About Allan!" starringTony Perkins and Julie Harris forthe ABC-TV Movie of the Week, which received one of their highestratings ; and segments of the JesseJames" TV series starring ChrisJones and guest star Sally Kellerman. In addition to this, he haswritten and directed a number ofAward-winning experimental filmsthat are constantly seen around theworld.
JOHN SAVAGE
Both the producer and director of"The Killing Kind" are delightedthat the original casting for therole of the son "Terry" dropped outat the last moment and they wereforced to find a replacement just aday before the start of shooting, forif this had not of been the case theywouldn't have been fortunate tohave signed this brilliant youngactor (22) for the role. John cameto Hollywood after several offBroadway shows and the musical
production on Broadway of "Exodus." Other screen roles include"Bad Company" and "SteelyardBlues" with Jane Fonda and DonaldSutherland, for which he was selected over 100 juvenile aspirants . Inthe film "The Killing Kind" youngSavage has a tour-de-force role as"Terry Lambert" accused of acrime he didn't commit, and whichleads to further complications andbloodshed. It is probably the mostdemanding role for a young actorsince Tony Perkins in "Psycho," ashe appears in every scene .
notices from cnucs around theworld . Harrington and Edwardshave also been associated on anABC-TV Movie of the Week, "How
Awful About Allan," starring TonyPerkins, Julie Harris, and JoanHackett, which was chosen to openthe fa ll season, and received oneof the highest ratings.
Next they paired for the Filmways/ UA fe ature "Wh at's The Matter with Helen?" starring DebbieReynolds, Shelley Winters, and Dennis Weaver, an exciting suspensestory by Henry Farrell ("WhateverHappened to Baby Jane?'') utiliz
ing Hollywood in the 30's as thebackground. Currently in releasefor Edwards is the exciting thrillerwith an ecology background ,"Frogs,'' for AlP starring Ray Milland; and "The Draft Dodger,"which marks a radical departurefor the producer who is known bestfor his unusual suspense thrillers."The Draft Dodger" deal s with thetopical subject of Amnes ty, andstars newcomers Darrell Larson,Heather Menzies, and Dennis Olivieri. Both Miss Menzies and Olivieri won starring roles in major
films at Universal as the result oftheir performances. In addition toproducing 'The Killing Kind" as aMedia Trend / George Edwards Pro
