It’s a new year and a chance to begin again. Of course, that’s only if you’ve elected to use new year’s resolutions as your starting point. I’ve been using new year’s resolutions from years ago! I’m still working on them!

Change is never easy. Sometimes we just need to take responsibility for change and not try to assign blame elsewhere. During the first four Sundays of this new year, we’ll be taking a look at how we can take respon-sibility for how we order our lives without blaming, shaming or naming. If you are unable to make all of the worship services, make sure you’ve downloaded our church app to your smartphone or iPad to listen to each message. You can also go to our church website and listen for each Sunday’s messag-es, which are uploaded by 12:15 p.m. each Sunday.

I hope and pray 2018 will be a terrific year for you and your family. Just keep working at it! Change is not easy, but you can do it!

Blessings to you in the New Year!

Rev. Dr. Daren Flinck

Celebrations:

We expressed appreciation to Chuck Moser for his many years of passionate service in the role as our church treasurer. Ellen Hoefker has volunteered to be our new treasurer. Thanks again, Chuck! The Foundation reported that second quarter scholarships for 5 college students will be sent in January. The Foundation will also donate $1950 to missions (separate from the amount given to Love INC) and continue providing financial support for the Wednesday night meal coordinator. The Missions Team was pleased with the Covenant Missionary visit and the baked potato lunch. Some members of the Missions Team were able to spend a little extra time with the Groves, learning more about the ministry that we are supporting ($1500 per year).

Advent events have been just terrific: the Children’s Christmas program (special thanks to those who organized it, Chris Dybevick for his pajama costume, and the kids for doing a fabulous job; the Christmas Cantata, complete with the bell choir, the chancel choir, the middle & high school youth and all of the directors for the amazing effort they have given to their choirs; we hosted 24 people for the first Blue Christmas service; for the youth Cookie Walk fund raiser (they raised funds for their upcoming events; the excellent Worthington Chamber Singers Christmas Concert (hosted at First UMC); sponsoring the Love INC Christmas Tree Forest; and hosting an Ethiopian evangelical workshop.

Monday morning prayer has been steady - two to four people meeting each Monday morning to begin the week in prayer. The Trustees have been examining repair to the boiler system. They announce that they are accepting bids for a new boiler system for installation next summer (they anticipate 2-3 bids by March 1st). Thanks to Denny Bonsma for repairing the women’s bathroom door and some repairs to the kitchen. We celebrate the congregational response to the letter sent out last week from the Finance team. We are pleased to report that we are expecting all expenses to be met including the apportionments by the end of the year! Thank you for your faithful giving!

Here are the highlights from the Covenant Council meeting held on

Challenges:

Busy time for Ellen - training for the treasurer will go on into the new year. Getting coffee servers for Sundays has been a challenge - a sign up sheet is in the narthex. So far, no one has responded. The mobile meals coordinator role is still needed - our turn is coming up in February 2018.

Current Focus:

We discussed and approved the proposed budget (see article in January newsletter for more details).

The next council meeting is set for Church Meeting Night, Thursday, January 18th at 6:30 p.m..

Respectfully Submitted by Rev. Dr. Daren Flinck

January's challenge: "Thank a civil servant. Policemen, fire fighters, first responders, anyone you want. Take them a treat or send them a card, but let them know how much they are appreciated!”

We do appreciate all that you have done, Chuck!

Christmas UnChristmas UnChristmas UnChristmas Un----Decorating:Decorating:Decorating:Decorating: Now that Christmas time has come and gone, it’s time to take down our church decorations! Come and join us on Saturday, January 6th at 9:00 a.m. as we remove the Christmas decorations and store them away for another year.

Sunday Morning Adult Study Group:Sunday Morning Adult Study Group:Sunday Morning Adult Study Group:Sunday Morning Adult Study Group: Beginning on January 7th at 9:00 a.m., the Sunday Morning Adult Study group will be looking at the book by John Eldregde called “Moving Mountains: Praying with Passion, confidence and Authority.” Some prayers work. Some prayers don’t. Why? Why does it surprise us when our prayers don’t bear fruit? Some diets work, but most don’t; some investments produce, but others don’t; some schools are effective, but others fail. With most things, there is simply a way they work best. And so it is with prayer. We want it to go like this: God is loving and powerful. We need his help. So we ask. The rest is up to him. But the uncomfortable truth is that this is a naïve view of prayer that ignores a simple fact. Namely, there is a way that prayer works best. And it isn’t like that. come and find out what that is! Please contact the church office if you’d like a copy of the book and the study guide.
