OFF THE TOP

This week’s news that the Alzheimer Society has chosen Bobcaygeon for ‘a dementia-friendly town’ pilot program

is a bit of a good news – bad news story. The fact the society and its client advisory committee chose Bobcaygeon because it is welcoming, hospitable and offers a sense of community is, indeed, very good to hear. The fact that they estimate that hundreds of people in the community have dementia is a little more sobering. However, it is hoped that a successful Bobcaygeon pilot project can one day go nation-wide and that is huge news for Bobcaygeon as well as the entire City of Kawartha Lakes. So, what are they planning? If you, or someone you know, has dementia, you, or they, will be asked to wear a recognized symbol so that people in the town know that you have dementia and what stage of dementia you have. In turn, businesses

and organizations will have decals on their windows to let you know that they have had some training in dealing with dementia so theirs will be a safe haven for you. There will be public education sessions for businesses and organizations in the coming weeks and months. The idea is to make life better for people with dementia in our community so that they can lead full and independent lives. It is also aimed at encouraging members of the general public to see these people for who they are – active members of our community, first and foremost, who just happen to have a dementia health challenge. Kudos to members of the client advisory committee – all of whom have various stages of dementia – and were on hand for the pilot program launch at Retirement Suites of Kawartha Lakes. People such as Colleen O’Grady and Paul O’Donahue put a face to dementia in our area and prove that a diagnosis does not mean they have stopped living. We encourage everyone in Bobcaygeon and the City of Kawartha Lakes to get behind this initiative.

Looking for helpersFollowing in the footsteps of the Olympics and Paralympics, it seemed an opportune time to ask for help to keep Canada Day alive in Bobcaygeon. Marg McLean, Silver Jubilee recipient, has organized this day for the past 28 years, along with a small committee. The races, face painting and games at Tommy Anderson Park start off the day, followed by cake at the Lock 32 park and parade at 2:30 p.m., followed by great music. The best fireworks display in the Kawartha Lakes begins around 10 p.m. This day is funded by the Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund, Canadian Heritage Fund, COKL 50-50 capital fund and development fund and the very generous donations by businesses in Bobcaygeon and individual supporters. We need help. We are seeking people to help on Canada Day at Tommy Anderson Park and help with the parade and collection day. We are also seeking individuals to be on the committee and bring forth new ideas. Our goal is to make sure our young people celebrate Canada and be proud of our heritage. We live in a great country and feel July 1 should be a special day for everyone. If you can help, contact Sandra at705-738-5032 or [email protected]. Bobcaygeon Canada Day committee

Awesome year for rinkWhat an awesome year it has been for the community ice rink at Tommy Anderson Park. My request for help through The Kawartha Promoter was answered. Thanks to our new volunteers, Aaron Shaw, Dave Haney, Bobcaygeon Public School, Rodney Smith-Merkley and all those nameless people who just came out to help. Also, of course, the continued support of the Pillsworth, Blodgett and Keough families. Thanks to W & G for keeping the lot cleared. Many hands have made light work. Thanks to the community for coming together to keep the community ice rink going.Ruth PillsworthIce Rink Co-ordinator

Not a good meeting time I felt badly that I was unable to attend the Feb.12th meeting of the Kawartha North Family Health Team. As a certified hypnotherapist I have a great amount of healing to offer this community, however, with no advertising budget I am unable to reach many people. This meeting may well have offered an opportunity to help my community. Holding this meeting on a Wed. afternoon made it difficult for many people to attend. I certainly hope I can attend the next one.Shear Beauclerc

PETErBOrOuGH – The federal government has announced $58 million in Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) infrastructure spending for the next two years although nothing is earmarked for Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls and Lindsay. However, a major investment of $24.1 million will go into the Bolsover Dam at Lock 37 while another $3.5 million will be spent rehabilitating the Kennisis Dam in the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock riding. The announcement of a total of $58 million for major capital projects and ongoing preventative maintenance on the TSW was made in Peterborough last Friday (Mar. 14) and includes $11.5 million for dam safety and preventative maintenance projects for bridges, dams, lock gates and retaining walls as well as the management of navigation markers, and visitor facilities. Local MP Barry Devolin was on hand for the news and said in a press release “as someone who grew up on the Trent Severn Waterway, I know first-hand that major investments over many years are needed to upgrade and maintain the sustainability of the watercourse. Like with any piece of critical infrastructure, the projects we’re announcing today are an important step towards ensuring that our National Historic Site will become more modern and better maintained.” He said the funding is important to ensure the TSW continues to be a world class destination for recreational boaters and a model of environmental sustainability. “I’ve always said that the TSW encourages outdoor recreation, fosters economic development which supports our rural economy, and ultimately, builds stronger communities.” Devolin said the funding is in addition to the 2014 Economic Action Plan to invest $391.5 million in funding for highways, bridges and dams in national parks and along historic canals with details pending.

BEWArE OF ‘CON jOBS’duNSFOrd – A Dunsford man has provided a timely warning about “a con job” during Fraud Prevention Month.

Brian Eberts received a letter in the mail from a Hong Kong auditor saying he had found $17.5 million in a dormant account belonging to the late Mr. K.P. Eberts. They were seeking a next of kin. The pitch was to transfer the money to a safe overseas account. Eberts said he knew the letter, bearing a South Africa stamp, was not legitimate and wanted to share the story for public information. “If it seems like it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” Eberts said. He advised that people get professional advice if they receive such a letter.

BOBCAyGEON - The local Alzheimer Society is launching a pilot program in Bobcaygeon aimed at making the town dementia-friendly. The initiative was unveiled at Retirement Suites of Kawartha Lakes earlier this month by members of the society and its client advisory committee, that cover Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland and Haliburton. The society’s Pat Finkle said once a person is diagnosed with dementia, it does not mean that they stop living and “living in a dementia-friendly community can help them to live life to the fullest.” She said there were hundreds of people in the Bobcaygeon area who had dementia but were active in the community. She said the society chose Bobcaygeon as the host site for the pilot program because it is welcoming and hospitable and there is a sense of community. The program will focus on identifying community members who have dementia by having them wear a recognized symbol to alert people about their condition. Finkle said it will help others to realize they have dementia and may need help. Businesses will also have decals in their windows to let people know they are willing and able to help and have an understanding of their needs. There is also a public education component, with training sessions for businesses and organizations. Another goal is to redefine how people feel

about dementia, so that people see the person and not their disease. If the program is successful, the society would like to see it launched nationwide. Colleen O’Grady and Paul O’Donahue, members of the client advisory committee, talked about their diagnoses. Colleen said it didn’t stop her from shopping, enjoying entertainment, travelling, swimming, walking or going to the library so she can live life to the fullest. Paul said sometimes he just needs a helping hand to do the things he wants to do. Both said the program would make their lives easier. Paul said it will be easier to go into a store and feel comfortable asking for help. “My independence will be supported. We have difficulties but we are not incapable.” Finkle concluded: “Dementia is not to be feared. It’s to be understood.”

KAWArTHA LAKES - City of Kawartha Lakes seniors wonder how they are going to manage as their incomes remain static while the cost of housing, food and pharmaceuticals continue to escalate, visiting NDP MP Irene Mathyssen is hearing. At the same time, they are worried about their children and grandchildren as it’s predicted Canada’s senior population will double in coming years, she told The Kawartha Promoter in an exclusive interview. She said the federal and provincial governments

Page 7: The Kawartha Promoter, March 21 2014

need to be ready with a plan but said the federal Conservatives are so focused on balancing the budget that it is coming on the backs of the country’s most vulnerable. She said the NDP, if elected to lead the country in 2015, would sit down with the provinces to negotiate a “real health accord” and work to reform and modernize the system. Mathyssen is the Official Opposition Critic for Seniors in the NDP Shadow Cabinet. She also sits on the committee for veteran’s affairs and said the federal government is making it almost impossible for veterans to get higher funeral costs paid out under its increased Last Post Fund initiative but anticipates they will brag about the program’s cost savings at the next budget. Mathyssen visited the City of Kawartha Lakes Family Health Team office in Lindsay, spoke to veterans at the Bobcaygeon Legion, seniors at Adelaide Place in Lindsay, attended an NDP fundraiser in Lindsay and spoke to seniors in Fenelon Falls during her Mar. 13 and 14 visit.

BETHANy – Local MP Laurie Scott says she was thrilled with the recent announcement that the Stoneboat Community Wind Farm would be withdrawing its proposal to build five wind turbines in the City of Kawartha Lakes. “Community leaders have come together to battle against these projects and have worked tirelessly for the last four years,” Scott said in a news release, adding that she had worked alongside them. Manvers Wind Concerns has also welcomed the news. While the Stoneboat project has been cancelled, she said there is still the outstanding Feed-in Tariff (FIT) contract that needs to be terminated. Ward 16 Coun. Heather Stauble said the concern is that the FIT contract is transferable. Scott said that concerns had been raised about the siting of all four wind turbine projects in

the area. While Stoneboat has withdrawn, the community is still battling three other projects: Sumac Ridge, Settler’s Landing and Snowy Ridge for a combined 15 industrial wind turbines. Scott said she addressed the siting issue recently by asking questions in the House to Premier Kathleen Wynne and the ministers of energy and environment, claiming all three failed to provide an adequate answer. She said the Sumac Ridge Wind Farm that was approved in December 2013 by the Ministry of Environment will have a huge

impact on the development of the Peterborough Airport, will damage the Oak Ridges Moraine and overshadow the Cham Shan Temple. “The fight is not over. There is still Stoneboat Community Wind Farm’s current FIT contract and three more projects in the area and we will not quit until they are stopped. The recent news just means we are on the right track. This will reenergize the communities to keep up the fight,” Scott said. An Environmental Review Tribunal (ERT) resumes April 10 into the Sumac Ridge project.

dEvOLIN IN KOrEA FOr FTASEOuL, KOrEA - Local MP Barry Devolin joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper, International Trade Minister Ed Fast, and Minister of Industry James Moore, to conclude negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement between Canada and South Korea. “After eight years of working behind the scenes and promoting the benefits of a free trade agreement with the Korean community in Canada, I am ecstatic a deal has been finalized,” Devolin said in a press release. “This pact has significant meaning for my riding especially with the new markets opening up for our agricultural and agri-food sector, which is a large part of this area’s economy.” Devolin said that, for example, it is estimated that

by opening up the Korean market to the Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector, sales in the form of goat cheese, genetics and equipment alone could be as high as $50 to $75 million according to Bruce Vandenberg, owner of Mariposa Dairy in Lindsay. “South Korea has the world’s 15th largest economy and the fourth largest in Asia with an economy of $1.1 trillion and a population of 50 million. The opportunities are there”

KINMOuNT SuPPOrTS BurSAry PrOGrAM

KINMOuNT – The Kinmount community has once again risen to the education challenge by raising close to $12,000 for the Kinmount District Bursary Fund to help local students go on to post-secondary education. A successful loonie auction was recently held at the Galway Hall, the third of its kind since the fund was founded in 2011. Kinmount pharmacist Khosrow Eshkour is the brainchild behind the fund, which has sponsored about 18 students to date with bursaries of $1,000 each. Khosrow said the fund is near and dear to his heart since provincial studies have found that

the area has some of the lowest participation rates for students going on to university, college or trade schools. He said he started the program to bring awareness about education to the area and to give potential post-secondary students a helping hand. He received the support of the community and there is now a board that administers the bursaries. This year’s funds will go towards another 10 students beginning the academic year at a recognized post-secondary institution in September 2014, Khosrow said. To qualify, students must be eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), which establishes need, and they must be accepted by a recognized university, college or trade school. Interested students can get a written application form from the Kinmount Pharmacy. The board is expected to meet in May and June to go over applications. Khosrow said that as a businessman in the town, he feels a social responsibility to give back and when he finds out that students have attended prestigious universities such as Queen’s University in Kingston or McMaster University in Hamilton, he feels a sense of satisfaction. He said $1,000 might not seem like a lot of money to a working person, but it is a lot to a student. “When you educate a person, you change a generation to come.”

FENELON FALLS - The Fenelon Falls Skating Club is putting the finishing touches on 50th anniversary celebrations slated for Saturday, March 29 in the town. The festivities will be held at the Fenelon Falls Community Center at 27 Veteran’s Way. “We are so excited about the 50th year of the Fenelon Falls Skating Club that we are hosting a celebratory event whose sole purpose is to join the community,” the club said, adding “this club has a long, wonderful history and has provided excellent coaching and life lessons to some pretty awesome, talented skaters over the last 50 years. We are extremely excited about the event.” Throughout the month of March, local businesses have caught the spirit with skating club-themed window displays in a fun competition that will be judged Mar. 28. They have also helped to sponsor the event along with the Fenelon Falls Legacy C.H.E.S.T. fund and the city. The celebrations kick off at 11 a.m. with a memorabilia and historical display, ice show (starting at 1 p.m.) followed by a reception, a free public skate and a social hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion for alumni skaters in the evening. Cost is via donation to the Fenelon Falls Food Bank or Kawartha Youth Help. Organizers are still looking for memorabilia. They said a lot of former coaches will also be in town for the event. For more information, contact Barb 705-887-3276 or Pam 705-887-6441.

THINKING OF rEdOING THE KITCHEN?

The kitchen is the centre of all household life and it is most definitely the most commonly used room in any home. This is one of the main reasons why it is important to have a very well-thought-out plan, of course, only if you really are interested in kitchen installation. You should address the three most important areas in any kitchen: food preparation, storage and clean up. In addition to that, it is also very important to consider what type of flooring you might want, cabinets, countertops, appliances and any other types of furnishings you might want to add. The thing you need to keep in mind is that designing and preparing for kitchen installation is as important as the actual work will be. When considering doing such home improvements, you should also think about the amount of money you will have at your disposal in order to do everything you want. No matter if your budget is small or big, you should ask for some quotes from a lot of different companies, so that you

can find reasonable rates. Think about it this way, even if you have what seems to be a big budget, if you find a company with reasonable prices, you will be able to do even more with your kitchen like buying that new fridge you always wanted. In addition, remember the importance of giving the exact same information to all of the companies you contact, so that you can receive accurate estimates and compare them properly. It is also a good idea to find a company for your home improvements project that has a lot of experience on the market. By choosing a company with a rich background, you will be able to benefit from all their years in the business. The contractor you will hire will be able to give you a lot of advice regarding the things you want to make or may even give you ideas regarding how to improve your design plans about kitchen installation. Who knows, maybe he or she will even help you make the most out of some odd corners or slanted ceilings. Remember to ask for quotes from different companies, and only choose one that has a lot of experience on the market. Source: BriefingWire.com, 2/14/2014

dON’T FOrGET THE BATHrOOM

When building your dream house, every room needs to be given equal attention and care. Even a room as small as the bathroom can go a long way towards creating an appealing image, if designed correctly. In choosing the right concept for your bathroom, you need to be presented with a variety of choices so you can be confident and assured in your pick. Execution of the renovation must be done by professional hands for maximum quality. Some people also wish to be involved in the entire renovation process, making decisions at each step and interacting with the renovators to get a better idea of what is happening with the project. A renovation is a long-term investment and is not something you generally do on a regular basis. When considering a solid investment like this, only the best can be considered. continued on page 16

ALUMINUM RAILINGSINTERIOR RENOVATIONS & MORE

It may seem hard to believe at first, but a finely designed bathroom can change the way people view your house. While it seems counter-intuitive, the bathroom is arguably the most visited room in the house, with regular trips being made several times a day by guests and inhabitants alike. With this in mind, keeping your bathroom well-maintained along with a sleek and appealing design will make your property all the more desirable. That also gives you a visible reason to be proud of your home. Firstly, you will have to choose a design for your bathroom. After you have chosen your concept, the commercial builders will start making building plans for your bathroom. Once completed, the renovation can begin. The professionals handling the

construction are expertly trained in their respective fields, and can carry out whatever plans have been laid out for you efficiently. At the end of the project, you will have an exquisitely renovated bathroom that combines value and aesthetics, whilst staying true to regulations and safety procedures. Investing in the right kind of garage door is one sure way to significantly increase your home value. The cost involved in replacing your existing garage door can vary based on the door size and the material you choose. The garage door industry has greatly evolved over the years and you have garage doors available in a lot of materials such as wood, wood composite, steel, aluminium and vinyl for instance. Each of these types varies in price, look and commercial value. However, any of them can help you enhance the value of your home. Steel is the most preferred material for garage doors. They combine in them maintenance free factory finish and economical pricing. You also have a wide range of colors and models in steel doors. Light weight, strength and better insulation are their added advantages. With regard to wooden doors, you can conveniently choose from traditional to swung open models. They are custom built and aesthetically pleasing. One downside to them is that they need a

significant spending on their maintenance to avoid splitting, rotting and warping of the material. Wood composite doors are manufactured from composite material. They can give an exact wooden finish to your doors. However, they are more expensive than steel doors. Vinyl garage doors are the most expensive doors you can think of. They are of the highest quality and are very light in weight. They are absolutely maintenance free and resistant to scratches and dents. Home improvement projects aim at enhancing the look and quality of your homes. However, homeowners are often hesitant to take up large scale projects on account of the cost and time commitment they involve. Accomplishing such projects might be a hassle as well as a burdening expenditure but there are certainly a large number of benefits to reap once you complete them. One of the surest outcomes of a home improvement project is the significant increase of the property value. Once a major home improvement project is accomplished, your home will look better and function more efficiently thereby considerably boosting up the resale value. Among the several tasks associated with the home improvement project, garage door replacement is perhaps the most important one. A professional garage door installation firm can accomplish this for you when you can choose from a wide variety of options available in the market with regard to the material, style, color and the manufacturer. Year on year, the “Cost vs. Value” report released by Remodelling Magazine brings out the job cost and resale value of several kinds of home improvement projects. The results are of immense value in calculating the percentage cost in relation to the resale value of any such new project. One common observation emerging from such studies indicates the tremendous boost in the resale value after undertaking some impressive improvement

categories. Talking on this with special reference to garage doors, no one can underestimate the home enhancement brought about by the new generation garage doors. With myriad options in front of them, homeowners can certainly benefit from garage door replacement. – Source BriefingWire.com, 12/23/2013

Crazy Monkey Tree Service is a new service being provided in Bobcaygeon and the surrounding area. Aaron Shaw, owner and operator, grew up in Bobcaygeon, where his family have been community members for more than 200 years. Aaron has always had a love of the outdoors, climbing and learning about trees, and this interest brought Aaron and his wife home to Bobcaygeon to build a business. Aaron has lived worldwide, Afghanistan, Fort McMurray and Thailand but family brought him home as his parents and siblings and nephews reside in our

town. Aaron takes pride in that he is committed to the preservation of the trees in our community. As a member of Arbour Canada and the Interna-tional Society of Arbor-culture, he is fully-trained, licensed and insured. He acknowledges that there are circumstances that make it essential to re-

move or prune back a tree; the age of a tree, infestation and proximity of tree to structural buildings. Aaron also likes to provide current and relevant information to homeowners helping them navigate their concerns towards environmental impact and the placement of trees and shrubs in their landscaping. No job is too big or small, and all circumstances individual. With local staff hired and his nephews to help out, Aaron would love the opportunity to discuss with clients his opinion and their options with a written quote, as all jobs are unique unto themselves. He believes in providing safe and great service for a fair price.

TREES, TREES, TREES

Here are what clients have to say:“We found Aaron Shaw, business owner of Crazy Monkey Tree Service, very quick in servicing our needs. Aaron met with us to discuss our tree removal requirements providing good knowledge and offered suggestions to reduce our cost. We found Aaron to be competent, enthusiastic, professional and easy to work with, having the ability to understand our needs. A reasonable quote was provided on the spot. We were pleased with the job which was completed in a very timely manner. We would not hesitate to recommend his service to anyone.” – Joy and Jerry Mous, Bobcaygeon.“Crazy Monkey Tree Service, owned and operated by Aaron Shaw of Bobcaygeon, lives up to its logo “You Call – We Have It Fall” in all kinds of weather. They are prompt, very reasonable and clean up af-ter themselves. A very welcome addition to Bobcaygeon businesses.” – Ellen Herridge, Bobcaygeon.

Aries (March 21 to April 20)Try not to disagree for the sake of disagreeing, Aries. Make the effort to focus on one point of conflict, resolve it positively and move on. Don’t get bogged down in multiple issues all at the same time.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21)Some spring travel plans are in the air for you, dear Taurus. It’s time to make a big splash! Don’t dream about it – do it!

Gemini (May 22 to June 22)In order to make the goals you have chosen for yourself come true, you must act, Gemini. Things will not happen by themselves, as much as we would like them to. So start with a list: what do you hope to achieve today, tomorrow, next week, next month? You get the picture – now start snapping those photos!

Cancer (June 23 to July 23)Some times (particularly in these economic times) we have to “settle” for employment that is not as fulfilling as we would hope. Don’t despair, Cancer. Every job is important, and worth doing. Hold on and, with confidence, things will improve.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23)Dear, sweet Leo! You are a kind, loving, caring, trusting best friend to anyone who needs you. You are so special!

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23)Above all else, now is the time you need to believe in yourself, Virgo. Don’t sacrifice your happiness for someone else’s, and don’t change yourself for anyone or any relationship.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23)“There is no passion to be found playing small --- in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”: Nelson Mandela. Yes, you read that right, Libra. Go big or go home. You know what you are capable of – go out and live it!

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22)Don’t carry yesterday’s pain around

your neck like some kind of trophy, dear Scorpio. The only one it is hurting is you. Take the chain off your neck and throw it away, the sooner the better.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21)It is time to take a serious look at where you’re going and what you are doing. You need to take steps – not giant leaps, of course – but movement in the direction that your heart tells you is the right place to be.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20)Ah, Capricorn! Looking for love in all the wrong places! Be sure to love yourself first and foremost. Every day find something wonderful about yourself.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19)Find wisdom where you might not expect, Aquarius. Don’t shut out an opportunity to learn something because you think the source is not worth your while. You can take strength and learning from many places.

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20)Make “Born to be Wild” your song for this phase, Pisces! That’s right – whatever “wild” might mean to you, go for it. And sing out loud and clear.

Income tax season is upon us and perhaps you don’t know where to start?

Many people find tax time stressful, but with a little preparation, it can be a cinch. Read on for some tips to make preparing your income tax return quicker and easier:• Start early. This way, you’ll not only avoid penalties

for late filing, but you’ll also be able to organize your finances to take advantage of potential tax benefits. Prepare the returns of everyone in the family at the same time. Often, expenses that won’t benefit one member of the family can be transferred to another.

• Get organized. It’s much easier to prepare your tax return if you file the documents you’ll need in one place. Taxes in Canada are due on Apr. 30 every year. If you’re preparing your own return, you can use the Canada Revenue Agency’s NETFILE program to submit it. You’ll save time, make fewer mistakes and, if applicable, get your refund faster.

For more tips on preparing your income tax return, see Your Financial Toolkit on the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s website, itpaystoknow.gc.ca.

TrAdESPEOPLE CAN dEduCT TOOL COSTS

If you are an employed tradesperson, you may be able to deduct up to $500 of the cost of eligible tools you bought in 2013. You may also be able to get a rebate of the Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) you paid. For more information, see Employee

GST/HST rebate. Important facts:An eligible tool is a tool (including associated equipment such as a toolbox) that:• you bought to use in your job as a tradesperson and

was not used for any purpose before you bought it;• your employer certified it as being necessary for you

to provide as a condition of, and for use in, your job as a tradesperson; and

• is not an electronic communication device (like a cell phone) or electronic data processing equipment (unless the device or equipment can be used for the purpose of measuring, locating, or calculating).

For more details on how to calculate the deduction for tools, go to www.cra.gc.ca/trades. If you are an eligible apprentice mechanic, you may be able to deduct a part of the cost of eligible tools you bought in 2013 to earn employment income as an eligible mechanic on top of any amounts already claimed under the tradesperson’s deduction for tools. To be eligible, you must be registered in a program established under the laws of Canada or of a province or territory that leads to a designation under those laws as a mechanic licensed to repair self-propelled motorized vehicles and you have to be employed as an apprentice mechanic. To see if you qualify, go to the Employed apprentice mechanics webpage.

has been audited if they agree to remove the claim from their return. This procedure remains unchanged from the 2012 tax year. The CRA continues to alert taxpayers that if they receive a charitable donation receipt for an amount higher than the value of property donated, the receipt is not valid and can’t be used to claim a tax credit. The CRA is auditing all such gifting tax shelter schemes, and to date, none has been found to comply with Canadian tax law. The new legislation, introduced in Economic Action Plan 2013, affects taxpayers who have been denied, in whole or in part, a tax credit for donations made under a gifting tax shelter and who have filed an objection to this decision with the CRA or appealed it to the Tax Court of Canada. The new legislation allows the CRA to collect 50% of the amount in dispute or to withhold 50% of the refund of an amount in dispute, when these amounts are related to a gifting tax shelter. The CRA strongly encourages taxpayers to get advice from an independent tax professional before engaging in a tax shelter. To make sure the advice is independent, a tax professional should not be linked in any way to the tax shelter or the promoter of the tax shelter.

Quick facts• The CRA has denied more than $5.9 billion in donation

claims and reassessed over 182,000 taxpayers who participated in these gifting tax shelters.

• The CRA has revoked the charitable status of 47 charitable organizations that participated in gifting tax shelters.

• The CRA has assessed $137 million in third-party penalties against the promoters and tax preparers involved.

• The CRA will also be administering new legislation for the 2013 tax year, which affects taxes in dispute related to gifting tax shelters.

KIdS LEArN IT’SCOOL TO CurL

BOBCAyGEON - Once again, the Bobcaygeon Curling Club offered the Bobcaygeon Public School curling instruction for students from Grades 4 to 8. Last year, 22 students were trained and in 2014 there were 43 participants signed up. The students registered to curl twice a week for the months of January and February. Liana Oliver, from the school, coordinated and supervised the program.

Parents, friends and relatives watched the weekly training and instructional sessions and games. Laura Ferguson, from the curling club, was the main instructor. She was helped by 16 additional volunteers. The two-month schedule finished on Mar. 3 with a bonspiel and prize presentation. One sponsor, Godfathers Pizza, supplied pizza and pop, plus the students enjoyed cake and other treats along with their prizes. The program was developed and strongly supported by the public school to provide the students with an introduction to curling. Many of the children had watched some of our Olympic men’s and women’s curling games this year and this probably helped increase the attendance. - Submitted by Ron Piesanen

BOBCAyGEON - Caring for Waters, a Lenten study hosted by Trinity United Church in Bobcaygeon, kicks off Monday, Mar. 24. The ‘Growing, Embracing, Sharing’ series consists of a 30-minute video followed by a 30-minute discussion every Monday night during Lent. Reverend Rodney Smith-Merkley said the focus is on the fact that “sources of drinkable water are becoming increasingly scarce” and “communities and countries are actively looking for ways to ensure safe water for everyone.”

KINETTE NEWSBOBCAyGEON - Winter is still here and according to the calendar Spring is too. Soon to follow is Easter and with Easter come Easter Eggs. Our club shrunk quite a bit this winter as many packed up and travelled to the sunny south. We still managed to make 1,169 eggs with the help of many friends and we would like to thank Robert, Glenna, Lynda, Lynn, Dylan, Glenda, Brittany and our soon to be Kinette, Chris. There were beaters, kneaders, weighers and shapers the first evening, followed on the second evening by dippers, decorators and wrappers. This whole process was repeated and the eggs were soon out for sale. We are lucky to have so many businesses in town and area who support us and have our eggs for sale in their stores. The eggs sell for $3 and the proceeds

enable us to serve our community’s greatest needs at Ross Memorial Hospital, Bobcaygeon Helps Food Bank, Women’s Resources, A Place Called Home, Victims Services, Five Counties Children’s Fund and Cystic Fibrosis, which are a few of the organizations we help. By our April meeting most everyone should be back, tanned and rested, I hope. In May we will have a booth at the Walleye Tournament and our Trinkets, Treasures and Trash sale will be held on the second Saturday in July. - Kinette June

COMMuNITy CArESCommunity Care is committed to providing support and programming to assist people in our community who are dedicated caregivers. Caregiving for seniors can be a demanding task. Caregivers need a wide range of knowledge, emotional support and relevant resources to help them tackle such a challenging journey. Community Care strives to provide high quality support services for caregivers

and the individuals that they are looking after. As a partner in care, the agency has planned an upcoming “Care for the Caregiver” information series that is designed to give local people information, support and resources, so that they are able to provide for a family member as well as themselves. A free, six-part information series will feature local experts in health care and other areas of interest for caregivers. The series will be held on Wednesday evenings, every two weeks at Community Care Village Housing (65 Melbourne St. W.) in Lindsay, beginning Apr. 2. People may attend any or all of the sessions. • Apr. 2 - Care Options (home, community residential

and long-term care). • Apr. 16 - Home & Medication Safety. • Apr. 30 - Advocating for the Care Recipient. • May 14 - Healthy Eating (nutritional balance for

you and the person you are caring for). • May 28 - Managing and Planning Ahead (financial,

rOSS GETS ITSCHEMISTry ANALyzEr

LINdSAy - Ross Memorial Hospital’s new chemistry analyzer has arrived - thanks to donors. The hospital’s new chemistry analyzer is being assembled in the laboratory, thanks to donors whose gifts to the spring appeal in 2013 made it possible to replace the aging model that worked 24/7 for 12 years. The chemistry analyzer is one of the most important tools in the hospital, producing results for 35 different tests, such as blood tests, pinpointing kidney and liver function, cardiac health and drug levels. It processes samples and generates a report, showing the patient’s levels (of cholesterol, glucose, calcium, electrolytes, etc.) that allow physicians to make diagnoses and begin their treatments. The hospital counts on it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Our donors’ response to this need in the hospital was incredible,” said Erin Coons, executive director of the RMH Foundation. “Their gifts helped us to exceed our fundraising goal by 35%, raising $114,903

toward the cost of the new analyzer. Together with our donors, we have great chemistry.”

Chemistry Charge Technologist Sheran Lucas checks out the new chemistry analyzer. Submitted

Don't Wait for a Funeral to Celebrate

Have you said, “The only time I see my relatives is at weddings and funerals”? If your family is like mine, years could pass without seeing each other. Every time we are together, we all say, “We should do this more often.” But it ends there.

There is something to be said about the value of gathering together just for the sake of being with extended family.

Listen to Uncle Lester retell his story about getting lost in Montreal for three days on his way to Alberta. Or great-aunt Mildred sharing what it was like to have to leave school to look after her brothers and sisters when her mother died.

We have an uncle in our family who will be turning 100 in August. Through all the ups and downs of life, he has never lost his sense of humour. The hall in town has been rented and plans made. Relatives from near and far will descend on Lockeport, Nova Scotia to be part of this celebration.

Maybe it is time for a family party that is neither a wedding nor a funeral. It doesn't have to cost a lot of money – potluck would be great. Family from out of town would love to spend a night on your saggy pullout sofa. You will probably stay up half the night telling “Remember when….” stories.

Right now, the weather isn't conducive to having a picnic, but it is perfect for planning one. Create a new folder on your computer called “Picnic 2014”. Make notes to your heart's content. I can promise you won't regret it.

Barbara Bush wrote, “At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.”

Happy Planning!

There is a trend in funeral service. Almost everyone wants a Saturday funeral – to the point where some funeral homes have even added a “Saturday” surcharge. Why Saturday? Well, you don't want to inconvenience family and friends by causing them to miss work or school. You don't want to be a bother.

Your friends hold you in high regard. They would be willing to sacrifice more than a three-hour drive to express their sympathies. They love you and want to “be there” for you.

You would be surprised how often we overhear conversations that begin with, “Wow, I can't believe that you drove here all the way from Ottawa” or “It means a lot to me that you took the afternoon off work today for Mom's funeral” or “I didn't know I had so many friends.”

Our society is more comfortable with giving than receiving. Receiving is a humbling experience. But just think of all the times that you have sent food, cards, flowers and other acts of kindness to a grieving family.

When your family experiences a death, it is your turn to receive. That may mean visits, food, emails, cards, phone calls or attendance at the funeral – regardless of the day or time. Your friends feel strongly about supporting you to the point where they would show up even if the funeral were held at 7 a.m. Monday morning or 11 p.m. Sunday night!

The next time you think you may be inconveniencing someone, remember that friends choose to come to let you know they care.

SuCCESSFuL SEASONBOBCAyGEON - The Bobcaygeon Skating Club had another busy, successful season. When we hit the ice in October, we implemented the new Skate Canada CANskate program. It has proven to be a great change, with positive comments from skaters, parents, coaching staff and program assistants. On Mar. 1 and 2, we were in Campbellford for the annual interclub competition which included 13 local skating clubs. Our skaters brought home 20 medals, including 13 gold, four silver, and three bronze. We also had skaters in Barrie, Huntsville, Port Carling, Oshawa, Lindsay, and the Eastern Ontario StARskate Invitational Championship (EOSIC) in Cornwall. Many medals were won and personal bests were achieved but fun was always the name of the game. Don’t miss the Bobcaygeon Skating Club’s annual carnival, “Dancing with the Stars”, featuring a wide range of music but requires some audience involvement; we need you to vote for your favourites. Join us Friday, Mar. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Bobcaygeon Arena. Admission is $5, with children five & under free. The 65 skaters range in age from three to 15 and have been working hard over the season. Come on out and see the newest skaters make their debut, and the more accomplished skaters strut their stuff. The Bobcaygeon Skating Club wishes to thank the Bobcaygeon Legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund for their generous support of this event. Submitted
