As the year draws to a close, we evaluate our running goals for
the coming year, looking forward to a fresh start, a clean slate
full of new possibilities. Perhaps 2011 was all about that first 5k,
first half or full marathon, and now you are ready for a new
challenge. It could be setting several new PR’s, achieving that
next distance, or challenging yourself to run as many races as
you can. No doubt, there are an incredible number of events to
choose from at the local, state and national levels.
More than ever, we as runners strive to challenge the human
body, pushing the uppermost limits, seeking to attain the next
goal, driving ourselves to run faster and/or longer. This has
given rise to extreme distance running in the form of multi and
ultra marathoning. According to www.marathonguide.com, in
2010, 503,000 marathon finishing times were recorded, up
7.8% from 2009. In addition, multi marathon running has
gained momentum, with many finishers completing 2 or more
marathons in a year. The 50 States Marathon Club now has
2639 marathoners among its exclusive membership. To be
eligible to enter the club, a member must have completed a
minimum of 10 marathons in 10 different states.
Marathon Maniacs, another popular club which has gained
notoriety in recent years, has nine levels of criteria to attain
“Marathon Maniac” status and bragging rights. The lowest level
(Bronze) requires marathoners to 1) Complete two marathons
within 16 days OR 2) Complete three marathons within 90 days.
Each level becomes progressively more difficult, with the highest
level (Titanium) requiring inductees to 1) Complete 52
marathons in 365 days OR 2) Complete 30 marathons in 30
states, Canadian provinces or countries in 365 days OR 3)
Complete marathons within 20 countries in 365 days.
Marathon Mania no doubt has made an impact locally with the
Kalamazoo Marathon, and the proliferation of marathoners and
ultra-marathoners within the greater Kalamazoo area. Earlier
this month, the Kalamazoo Area Runners Beyond, the Borgess
Run Camp and the Kalamazoo SHufflers training programs
kicked off their 20 – 21 week training regiments, geared towards
Kalamazoo and other spring marathons. The Beyond program
alone has more than 220 registered participants training for full
and half marathons. No doubt, Kalamazoo demands 3 training
programs; as participant numbers expand capacity to provide
individualized coaching, safely navigate unclosed roads and
procure facilities becomes more challenging. A training camp

with 1000 participants would require much of the organization
of a major road race….times 20 weeks.
These programs are important in properly preparing
marathoners to go the distance. Studies show significantly
greater physiological stress, and health risks are incurred by
marathoners who don’t prepare properly in comparison to those
who do.

This 2006 Boston Globe Article describes post marathon testing
conducted by Massachusetts General after the Boston Marathon.
As part of the study, a sample of runners were given pre-race
exams two weeks before the marathon, and the pre-test results
are compared to post-test findings conducted after the
marathon. A blood specimen was taken immediately after
finishing, as well as a non-invasive heart function test.
One of the significant findings indicated that the biggest cardiac
risk appears in those that train the least. People who gradually
worked up to the marathon distance by running 45 miles a week
indicated no problems, whereas those who trained for less than
35 miles a week showed the greatest indication of cardiac stress.
The studies showed that cardiac troponin is a chemical that
shows up in blood tests when the heart muscle is damaged, and
is found in 60% of all marathoners. Another chemical and
indicator of cardiac dysfunction, brain natriuretic peptide, also
rises in 60 percent of marathoners. Last, the article indicates
the heart’s ability to relax after each beat remains impaired for at
least several weeks after a marathon (Foreman, 2006). Another

study found mildly impaired heart function persisted for one
month (Neilan etc al. 2006).
From a musculoskeletal perspective, the impact of running a
marathon is nothing less than extraordinary. It takes between
30,000 and 50,000 steps to run a marathon and with every step,
a stress of three to four times body weight is absorbed by the
ankles, knees, hips and lower back. With each stride, muscles
contract to propel the body forward while others control
movement by being lengthened. (Emmett, 2007). The muscle
damage and inflammation caused by eccentric contractions can
remain for seven days after running a marathon (Hikida et all.
1983) and repair of muscle fibers can take three to 12 weeks
(Warhol et all. 1985). Proper conditioning can help to create
the physiological adaptations needed to complete the marathon,
and prepare the body for the miraculous feat of going the
distance.
What does all this mean for multi-marathoners? With muscle
fibers taking as long as 12 weeks to repair, those doing multiple
marathons within a short period of time, particularly in the first
3-4 weeks, are recruiting muscle fibers that have not been
completely repaired. The result can include further breakdown,
and symptoms of overtraining, prolonging the body’s recovery.
Running another marathon before the return of normal heart
function also raises a question – does it increase risk and the
likelihood of cardiac distress? The studies did not address the
physiological impact of multi-marathons, but one can derive that
the physiological impact of running two or more marathons in a
short period of time, particularly at a hard effort, would
compound some of the findings.

While the studies on extreme distance running, especially
without proper conditioning, don’t always produce favorable
findings, there is no doubt the sport of running is conducive to a
healthy lifestyle, and serves as a showcase of the miracle we
know as the human body. It also fosters a social connection – a
shared common interest that builds friendships and a support
system lasting a lifetime. As with many things in life,
moderation and proper preparation are key ingredients to
making the most of the sport we are passionate about, and
maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

In following with recent events, the extraordinary growth in our running community was reflected in
the annual Run Through the Lights hosted by Gazelle Sports and Kalamazoo Area Runners which
attained record participation with over 960 participants – a 140% increase over last year. The
evening of Thursday, December 1, with temperatures in the upper 30’s and clear streets, created
ideal conditions as participants and volunteers gathered at Gazelle Sports for a festive 5K fun run
through the holiday lights of Downtown Kalamazoo.
Participants were greeted at the finish with tasty treats and refreshments including hot chocolate
while Gazelle Sports offered an evening of discount shopping. To close the festivities, runners
gathered in warm Mall Plaza for a door prize drawing and prizes were awarded for the categories of:
Best Costume – Howland family (Grinch trio)
Fastest Shoe Lacing Competition (female) – Jane McDonagh (23 seconds)
Fastest Shoe Lacing Competition (male) – John Rachor (42 seconds)
Run Through the Lights is free to the community, however, participants were asked to bring a non-

were able to collect 2,616 pounds of food for Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes. In addition, $1,134 in
monetary donations was designated to Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes.

Sarah Simmons and her Aunt Laurie Simmons at the 2010 Jingle Bell Run
By Christen McCool
It is often said that one of the best things about running is the chance to meet new people. While this
is definitely true, it is not just the meeting that is significant; the strength of the friendships that form
among runners is something unique to, and really special about, our community. Running provides
concentrated chunks of chatting and laid back hanging out. This means that running acquaintances
quickly become friends, and running friends eventually become family.
Sarah and Laurie Simmons are local athletes that running has brought together, even though they
were already family. Sarah is Laurie’s niece, though it is often assumed that they are a mother-
daughter duo. (As Laurie says, “typically in the running world when you see one of us, you will see
the other.”) The pair started walking together almost 3 years ago. Two years ago they decided to try
running since they were already walking as fast as they could without running (Laurie’s account),
and they were “sick of just walking all the time” (Sarah’s). Their first run together was Labor Day,
2009 at a high school track. Both were nervous initially, not considering themselves to be
particularly athletic, but from that first run, they were hooked. They slowly built their mileage, and
after an early injury, the pair educated themselves on proper training. There’s no going back now;
running is now a huge part of both of their lives. As Sarah says, through running she has “found
strength (mental and physical)” that she never knew she had.
Sarah and Laurie both count the other as one of their favorite aspects of running. They like to run
together because, as Laurie says, “we have a lot in common and during our runs could solve the
23 | P a g e
world’s problems.” They have grown incredibly close over the course of the many miles that they
have logged together. After races, they even go to a local diner to have breakfast with the rest of their
family. Sarah and Laurie also motivate each other to work toward that next goal. Laurie: “When one
of us is down the other is right there to say ‘yes, you can!’” Sarah: “We keep each other accountable
when we are training. Whenever I’m having a bad run, she always pushes me to keep going.” Both
Sarah and Laurie enjoy running with other members of the running community as well. Laurie says
that the friendships she has developed have had a “huge impact” on keeping her “positive, motivated,
and supported.”
Sarah and Laurie participated in the Beyond Training Program last year, together with another
friend. Those four months of hard work culminated in each woman’s proudest running
accomplishment to date: completing the Kalamazoo Half Marathon. A few years earlier, even a 5K
would have sounded out of reach. Sarah and Laurie were able to start and finish the race together.
For Laurie, “This race wasn't about time or speed for any of us, it was about doing it together.” Sarah
agrees: “I’m not out there to win a race, I’m just there to have a great time.” Crossing the finish line
gave Sarah a sense of accomplishment that she will never forget, a feeling made all the more special
by sharing it with her training partners. The next goal on the horizon? Both are currently serving as
Pace Leaders for the Beyond Training Program, targeting the 2012 Kalamazoo Half. Laurie and
Sarah also plan to train for a full marathon in 2013.
I’ll end with some praise for you all, care of Laurie: “I cannot say enough good things about
Kalamazoo runners, we really are there for each other and lead by example.” Preach it sister.
Brian O’Neill Running the Disney Marathon to Raise Funds and Awareness to Held Children with Battens Disease
New KAR member Brian O’Neill was featured in the Kalamazoo Gazette December 17, 2011 and is
raising money for a disease called "Battens Disease". He is running the 2012 Disney Marathon for
the first time to raise awareness and funds to help with children afflicted. Brian’s younger sister,
Meghan O'Neill, died at the age of 7 from the Battens Disease. Brian, now 21 years old and at WMU,
is trying to make a difference.
Brian’s father, Michael O’Neill, is having shirts made up to wear at the race and Brian’s mother,
Cheryl O’Neill, is also running Disney, her eighth marathon. The article may be found at
