Joining us will be the Director of South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP), Dr Susan Priest, providing you with an introduction to the SELEP and how businesses can engage and influence. Our second speaker will be John Harland PR and Marketing Manager of the Genting Club. As always you will hear the latest news from Southend along with a great opportunity for you to quiz our panel of local business and council representatives. FREE EVENT - Learn how to make your marketing work for your business! Run by Pro-actions (Essex) Ltd, this workshop is aimed at the owners, leaders and managers of small to medium sized businesses. Spaces are free but limited, with a morning and afternoon session available. Join us on 4th July 2013 at the Tickfield Centre. The University of Essex Business Hub is holding a new programme of business workshops and seminars, including free HMRC courses which are being running soon. Grants of up to £500 are available to help. The new Childcare Business Grants Scheme has been introduced. It will encourage and support the starting up of new childcare businesses by providing a flat rate start-up grant. Applications maybe submitted at any time. The Pitch 2013 Competition - Aims to find UK’s most exciting and innovative small company and entrepreneur talent. The winning entrepreneur will receive a package of business support prizes worth £25,000. Entries are now being accepted until 30 June 2013. Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) - Rounds Three and Four now open for applications. The Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative is a funding competition designed to improve the global competitiveness of UK manufacturing supply chains. The deadlines for applications are noon on 29 May for Round 3, and noon on 16 October for Round 4. Discovering Start-Ups is a competition bringing together industry expertise and offering assistance to new-start technology companies. The competition is open to UK based technology developers or providers of software, hardware or IT services. Entrants must be operating as a SME and must be in their start up phase. Applications must be submitted by 12 noon on 15th August 2013. Ford Higher Apprenticeship Programme - do you know a young person who is thinking about engineering at university? Ford is recruiting 15 Higher Apprentices to work in their Technical Centre in Dunton, Essex. It is a four and a half year programme working in a series of different departments within Engineering function. The apprenticeship grant for employers scheme has been extended to March 2014. Initially only on offer during the 2012/13 financial year, the funding has been extended following a positive response from employers. WHAT’S GOING ON IN OUR TOWN?

The newly refurbished Genting Club will be the host for the second

Southend Business Partnership Briefing of 2013, on 27th June 2013. Joining us will be the Director of South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP), Dr Susan Priest, providing you with an introduction to the SELEP and how businesses can engage and

Do you know someone who is starting a nursery or

childminding business? Grants of up to £500 are available to help.

The new Childcare Business Grants Scheme has been introduced.

It will encourage and support the starting up of new childcare

businesses by providing a flat rate start-up grant. Applications maybe submitted at

any time.

The Pitch 2013 Competition - Aims to find UK’s most exciting and innovative small company and entrepreneur talent. The winning entrepreneur will receive a package of business support prizes worth £25,000. Entries are now being accepted until 30 June 2013.

Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) -

Rounds Three and Four now open for applications. The

Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative is a funding

competition designed to improve the global competitiveness of

UK manufacturing supply chains. The deadlines for applications are noon on 29

May for Round 3, and noon on 16 October for Round 4.

Discovering Start-Ups is a competition bringing together industry expertise and offering assistance to new-start technology companies. The competition is open to UK based technology developers or providers of software, hardware or IT services. Entrants must be operating as a SME and must be in their start

up phase. Applications must be submitted by 12 noon on 15th August 2013.

Ford Higher Apprenticeship Programme - do you know a young person who is thinking about engineering at university? Ford is recruiting 15 Higher Apprentices to work in their Technical Centre in Dunton, Essex. I was pleased to see so many attend the last SBP Business Briefing at

the Genting Club, Westcliff with many new faces. The next briefing

will be on 26th September at the Tickfield Centre. It would be great

to see you all there.

The weather has been tremendous in Southend over the last

couple of weeks, and I hope that this has assisted a welcome

upturn in trading.

As always there will be a lot of events taking place over the

summer including, the Comedy Festival at the Cultural Centre 18th - 21st July

2013 starring Russell Kane along with the annual Southend Illuminated

Carnival Procession which will be taking place on 17th August 2013.

Check out the new look Business-on-Sea website, which has now gone live. It

will provide you with lots of current business information and business support

which you may require. The website address is www.businessonsea.co.uk.

Keep checking the website as it will continue to be updated. The Enterprise

running “Freshers’ Fair” a FREE event which is open to all businesses, charities

and non profit organisations. The event is on 8th October 2013. If you would

Ingeus is funded by the government to help connect employers with people

looking for work. If you recruit an unemployed 18-24 year old through Ingeus,

you can also qualify for a subsidy of £2,275 under the Youth Contract, a new

initiative to reduce youth unemployment. More information is available by contacting through the link

The town has been extremely busy with visitors, which is fantastic to see. As always there will be a lot of events taking place over the coming weeks including, the Southend Illuminated Carnival Procession later this week 2013 along with the 50th Annual Thames Barge Match on Southend Pier which will be taking place on 25th August 2013.

The Ideas in Motion Campaign have recently launched it’s website called www.ideasinmotionsouthend.co.uk which has plenty of ideas on how to travel better around Southend. More information is included in the newsletter.

The 26th September 2013, will be our next Southend Business Partnership

Briefing. Pop this date in your diaries and keep an eye out for the invitation.

Our keynote speaker will be Phil Parry Chairman of Spinnaker, who are a

global shipping recruitment company based in Leigh-on-Sea.

Would you like your Post Office to support a community scheme? Post

Offices (excluding Crown branches) can now apply to receive up to £10,000

to support a new scheme or service for their community. If you have an idea

Welcome... to the Southend Business Partnership Newsletter.

It has been a fantastic summer this year with the weather and the number of visitors to the town. Hopefully this has boosted trading levels especially for our seafront and retail businesses. Southend also continues to be the destination choice with film crews, photographers and conference organisers. With Blue Peter and the Gadget Man to name but a few.

As always there will be a lot of events taking place over the coming weeks including the Old Leigh Regatta on 21st September along with a trip on the Waverley Paddle Steamer from Southend Pier at the end of September. There will also be fantastic free Firework Spectaculars along the seafront every Saturday Night from 5th October to 16th November. Invitations have been sent out for the next Southend Business Partnership which is being held on 26th September 2013 kindly hosted by the Park Inn Palace Hotel. FUNDING AND GRANT OPPORTUNITIESFund101 - new round offering £1,000 a month to new businesses. UK- based start-ups looking to commence trading and those who are already in business and need funding to further their enterprise may be eligible for assistance. The programme closes in November. Meanwhile, applications will be accepted with monthly deadlines. The next deadline is 23rd September 2013.

£10,000 Business Growth Idea Competition is now open. The competition has been set up to encourage entrepreneurs who have enterprising ideas to boost the economic growth the UK. Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) - Rounds Three and Four now open for applications. The Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative is a funding competition designed to improve the global competitiveness of UK manufacturing supply chains. In Southend we have a number of networking events run by a variety of organisations including the Southend Business Partnership with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.

Welcome... to the Southend Business Partnership Newsletter.

There was a fantastic attendance to all events which took place during Global Entrepreneurship Week at the end of November. With over 15 business events throughout the week, there was a lot going on.

Southend also took part in the first UK Small Business Saturday and it was fantastic to see so many local businesses taking part. I would like to thank you all for your participation to help increase local trade. Good to see the media coverage and welcome your input for ideas for next year if this becomes an annual national campaign

Although we had a positive turnout at the Southend Business Partnership Briefing on 21st November, it was disappointing to find a large number of people booked to attend the briefing but didn’t join us on the day without informing the Enterprise and Community Team. Can I please remind you all, that if you book on to the Business Briefing and then you are unable to attend that you let the Enterprise and Community team know, either by phone or email. The SBP Business Briefing usually have a restriction in numbers and we therefore have waiting list. If we know that you cannot be part of the briefing someone else can have your place.

As 2013 draws to a close, Southend can expect another busy schedule planned for 2014 with lots of events taking place including a host of workshops and seminars for Climate Week in March plus New Year New Finance on 22nd January 2014.

Southend’s film festival had national coverage this week following the “two” lost films starring actor Peter Sellers being announced to be shown in public at the film festival in May 2014 for the first time in more than 50 years.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN OUR TOWN? New Year, New Finance! This is an event on 22nd January 2014, which will explore some of the financial challenges and opportunities for businesses in Southend in 2014 so your attendance is vital. There will be presentations and Q&A session along with the opportunity for you to speak to a range of financial and funding organisations, uniquely brought together for this event, to understand what sources of finance are available to you and your business. Apprenticeship Week 3-7 March 2014 - Now in its seventh year, National Apprenticeship Week encourages everyone with an interest in Apprenticeships across England to get involved in the Week. Southend has a Southend Careers Fair on 5th March 2014 and have vacancies for employers to have a stand at the event. The stand is FREE; if you wish to book a stand then please click on the link.

The best-selling writer, Martina Cole was recently chosen by The Reading Agency to lead this year’s Six Book Challenge. This free initiative, which is supported by Southend Libraries, aims to encourage adults to re-discover reading for pleasure and develop their literacy skills. New Awards for Southend Businesses The newly launched Southend Business and Community Charter Awards, administered by the Organisation for Responsible Businesses (ORB), support the vision of robust and efficient businesses and a thriving local community. Businesses of all types and sizes that demonstrate appropriate levels of community engagement can apply at any time for a Charter Award, available at bronze silver and gold levels. FUNDING AND GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

The MedTech Low Carbon innovation project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, provides specialised support services and grant funding to SMEs in the medical technologies sector and its supply chain. If this could help your business then please click here for further information.

The Low Carbon Business programme is aimed at small and medium sized enterprises and identifies cost and carbon savings available from improved energy efficiency. Many businesses in Southend are already reaping its rewards. The grants available are Capital Grant, which is awarded for a specific purpose and a Revenue Grant which is awarded over a period of time, comprising periodic payments.

The GREAT campaign helps make business idea happen. Whether you are looking to test ideas, or develop financial and planning skills, it gives you the support and inspiration you are looking for. It also provides links to key business support tools, highlighting top tools available from across government and a whole range of colleges and training organisations. The campaign will initially have three strands; inspire, hire and support.

The Low Carbon Freight Dividend is designed to encourage containers off the roads and onto rail or coastal shipping. Sup-ported by the European Regional Development Fund, eligible SMEs, who traditionally have used road transport to move con-tainers, will be offered a Low Carbon Freight Dividend grant of up to 30% for moving their freight from truck to train or coastal shipping. Could you be a volunteer? HMRC need volunteers to trial a new online service for SMEs. It will be a live trial of an early version of a new online service for small and medium businesses. The new service will bring together in one place everything businesses needed to manage their tax affairs.

Exemplas are looking for growth potential limited companies in which to invest. The COIN Fund could offer co-investment capital to help attract the full amount of investment your need. The fund is designed for companies with a viable business plan looking for investment capital to finance their growth plans.

The apprenticeship grant for employers scheme has been extended to March 2014. Initially only on offer during the 2012/13 financial year, the funding has been extended following a positive response from employers. It has also been increased so eligible employers can claim the grant for up to ten apprentices. Apprenticeships website.

Inclusive Apprenticeships! Positive Signs launched the Inclusive Apprenticeships Campaign, an initiative that aims to encourage more employers and training providers to welcome and support Apprentice applications from young Deaf and disabled talent.
