Articles cite references (if any) at the end of the article. Names and addresses of authors typically appear at the beginning of the article.

Short Notes are shorter contributions that deal with the same subjects as articles. Short Notes typically cite no references, or at most a few in parentheses in the text. Names and address of authors appear at the end of the Short Note.

Bird Finding Guides “where to find a________ in Oregon” (for some of the rarer birds) and “where to find birds in the ____ area” (for some of the better spots).

Reviews for published material on Oregon birds or of interest to Oregon birders.

Photographs of birds, especially photos taken recently in Oregon. Digital files or Color slide duplicates are preferred. Please label all photos with photographer’s name and address, bird identification, date and location of photo. Photos will be returned if requested.

From May 2008 to May 2009 the Oregon Bird Records Committee (OBRC) completed the follow-ing records. The first group of records are those for which the written report and/or photographs or specimens supported the stated identification and are accepted records. If photo(s) or specimen is indicated for a record it was ac-cepted as verified. Other records were accepted as sight records.

Of the 67 records reviewed by the Committee 63 were accepted and 4 were not accepted. During this period five new species were accepted for addition to the Of-ficial Checklist of Oregon Birds: Wandering Albatross, Greater Shearwater, Red-billed Trop-icbird, Wood Sandpiper, and Pyr-

rhuloxia. The Official Checklist now stands at 517 species. Indigo Bunting was removed from the review list.

Information presented below for each species includes location of sighting, number of birds, sex and age if known, special information (such as collection and museum number) and date(s), initial of the observer(s) submitting writ-ten or other evidence for accepted records, and the OBRC record file number. The OBRC record file number reads as follows: the first 3 digits are the AOU number for the species, the second 2 are the year in which the record was observed, and the last numbers are the consecutive numbers for the records as they are filed.

The members of the OBRC for 2009 are David Bailey, Tom Crab-tree, Jeff Gilligan, David Irons, Tim Janzen, Gerard Lillie, Craig Miller, Owen Schmidt and Jay Withgott. The alternates are: John Rakestraw and Tim Shelmerdine.

The OBRC thanks the following organizations for having made financial contributions in the past year to help with expenses: Cape Arago Audubon Society, Central Oregon Audubon Society, Audu-bon Society of Corvallis, Grant County Bird Club, Grande Ronde Bird Club, Kalmiopsis Audubon Society, Lane County Audubon Society, Audubon Society of Portland, Salem Audubon Society, Umpqua Valley Audubon, and Yaquina Birders and Naturalists.

The OBRC solicits nominations for membership. Each year the OBRC elects 3 of its 9 mem-bers for 3-year terms. Birders themselves interested in serving on the OBRC should nominate themselves. All nominees must be members of OFO in good stand-ing and the Secretary must receive all nominations before 15 Novem-ber 2009. New terms begin at the new calendar year.

Not Accepted Records:

Craveri’s Murrelet 026-03-01 South Jetty Columbia R., Clatsop Co., 1 bird on 21 June 2003. Bird seen at some distance and for a brief period. Details did not rule out similar alcids.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 402-08-24 Toledo, Lincoln Co., 12 April 2008. Photos appeared to be of a Red-naped Sapsucker as observer suspected.

Eastern Phoebe 456-08-14 P Ranch, Harney Co., 1 bird on 31 August 2008. Poor, dark photo in-conclusive to species. Details did not rule out similar flycatchers.

Eastern Yellow Wagtail 696-02-03 Summit Diamond Peak, Lane Co., 1 adult on 16 October 2002. De-scription did not entirely rule out a bright Pipit. Location would be highly unlikely for the species.

A big “Thank You” to the 82 people who sent in their listing results this year.

When I took on the task of compiling these results, I wanted to change the rules of the game a little, to include a larger picture of Oregon birding. Some thresholds have been lowered, and more results are carried forward without an update from the observer. This will allow more people to participate and give a more complete picture of who has seen what. People who do not report in a given year will not seem to have fallen off the end of the earth.

For results to be published, the thresholds are as fol-lows:1. A state life list must be 300 or more.2. A county life list must be 100 or more.3. A state year list must be 250 or more.4. A county year list must be 100 or more. (new, was 150)5. A state life list over 375 will be carried for ward without an update. (new)6. A county life list over 175 will be carried forward without an update. (new)

From time to time, birders drop out of reporting their lists, for various reasons. Their past published reports are a matter of public record. Carrying these numbers forward gives context to results reported today. However, if you would rather not see your past results carried forward in future Listing Results, simply let me know, and I will gladly honor your wishes.

Notable milestones for 2008 include:Statewide listing:Jeff Gilligan set a new Oregon state life list record of 483.Trent Bray passed the state life list threshold of 400 species.Carol Karlen reached the goal of recording 100 spe-cies in all 36 Oregon counties. Count Circle ListingHere are the results of the new count circle listing idea. The intent is for birders to focus on a circle closer to home, which can be visited with less use of time, gas, and travel. The results are presented in alphabeti-cal order by county and observer.

2008 started out sane enough. My plan, as I’ve done for many years, was to keep a casual county year list, participate in GBBC, NAMC’s, BBS, Raptor Runs, Thanksgiving Day Count and a few CBC’s. Then I read the article in Oregon Birds on circle birding. For some strange reason this new idea sounded like an interesting challenge.

My circle would include where I spend most of my time – home. Living in Brookings, the extreme southwest corner of the state, the circle couldn’t go very far south, that’s California or very far west, that’s the ocean. The circle loca-tion would include the state line area and west as far as I could identify birds from land. continued on page 119

2008 Circle Birding Accounts:

John F. Gatchet [email protected]

When I read about this new way for reporting bird sightings it did not enter my mind that this was a category I would be reporting for 2008. My plan was to travel and hike in Columbia County and en-joy a “big year” of birding there. As the year progressed I found myself birding primarily on Sauvie and Oak Island followed by Scappoose Bottoms and the heights above Scappoose.

It was a perfect area for a count circle that in addition included St. Helens. A favorite spot to walk in St. Helens is the nature trail at the Scappoose Bay Ma-rina. The center point for the circle is near the end of Fullerton Road midway between Scap-poose and St. Helens. continued on page 126

Quinton Nice [email protected]

I did not have a circle in mind for this count when the year began, but I did have a goal of visiting a few local birding spots around Sheridan and Willamina monthly to collect census counts for the birdnotes.net database. In addi-tion I wanted to continue check-ing the Willamina fishing pond at least weekly. When I found all these sites fit within a 15-mile circle, it was the obvious choice to compile an overall list for my circle report. At the end of the year I was pleasantly surprised to learn I had recorded 124 spe-cies between seven locations. Only two, a Red-throated Loon at the Sheridan sewer ponds and a Wrentit at the Willamina sewer ponds, were county life birds, but these counts contributed the ma-jority of the 153 species I found for my Yamhill county year list, my best ever. The results of regu-lar birding close to home defi-nitely exceeded my expectations.

Continued from page 107 Circle Birding: Don Munson

The habitat is basically ocean, beaches, some agricultural land, a few minor wetlands, two small rivers and a lot of forest land. With no bays, lakes, mudflats or refuges in the area, I estimated that I should find at least 185 spe-cies and could find around 200 with more effort and some luck.

Birding this area presents some interesting lowlights. Take shore-birds for instance: one would expect shorebirds to be easy; but no, they avoid local beaches. One example is Sanderling; fairly common elsewhere but I only had one sighting for the year.

Most birds that migrate along the coast take the straight line route from Cape Ferrelo at the northern boundary of my circle to Cres-cent City, CA well to the south, avoiding the coastal indentation in between (my circle). I think I know this area fairly well and I can’t think of any bird species that I should have found that I missed. But there are quite a few more that I could have found. For instance it seemed to be a poor year for migrating raptors and vagrant warblers. Some of the 28 species that I found in 2008 that I don’t see every year or have never seen in this area, aka “oh boy” birds, were; American Bit-tern, Lesser Scaup, Sora, Sandhill Crane, Franklin’s Gull, White-

winged Dove, Black Swift, Lewis’ Woodpecker, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Northern Shrike, Swamp Sparrow, and Lapland Longspur.

Circle birding turned out to be fun and interesting in a claus-trophobic sort of way. The price of gas added incentive to bird a local area and although I didn’t travel as far, I think I spent more time than usual birding this year. Less driving plus more birding equals more birds per mile. My total was all self-found birds with no chased birds. Considering the area, I think that if I were to try this again I might have a difficult time equaling my total which was 223.

Recognition for Tom WintersPaul T. Sullivan, 4470 SW Murray Blvd. #26, Beaverton, OR

At the OFO annual meeting at Malheur Field Station on September 13, 2008, it was my pleasure to present Tom Winters with the following award:

“In appreciation for his many contributions to ornithology in Oregon and Oregon Field Ornithologists, this award is presented to Tom Winters by Oregon Field Ornithologists.”

Tom’s interest in birding began when he drove a PSU Outdoor Program van to Malheur in 1972, and later took a bird identification class at Portland Community College in 1978. There he met Barbara, his wife for 10 years and still his best birding friend. He joined OFO in 1980.

After moving to John Day, Tom took on a plethora of roles.• Compiler of John Day CBC since 1984• Officer of Grant County bird club since 1984• Compiler of monthly field notes in the club newsletter since 1987• Handled birdseed sales (up to 12 tons) 1986-1995• Initiated a club scholarship that sends a local child to OMSI camp each summer • Ran bird surveys on private lands • Ran bird surveys for The Nature Conservancy• Ran bird surveys on Forest Service lands• Ran winter raptor surveys• Has run 2 Breeding Bird Surveys for 25 years• Participated in habitat restoration projects• Taught in the local schools• Ran a bluebird trail• Monitored a local Sage Grouse lek• Monitored Upland Sandpipers in Bear Valley• Organized OFO annual meeting in John Day in 1988• Served on OFO board 1998-2002• Assisted with OFO and Audubon Birding Weekends

The Grant County Bird Club is not a one-man show. Many other birders have made significant contributions over the years. Tom is simply their voice.

Tom has been the conduit for local sightings to reach the wider birding community. He is the person whom visitors contact when seeking directions to local birding sites. He is the person whom outsiders contact for authoritative informa-tion on birds of the area.

Living on the edge of Bear Valley, south of John Day, Tom counts a Great Gray Owl among his yard birds, and Sandhill Cranes inhabit the nearby meadow.

With a record like that, it was indeed a pleasure to recognize Tom Winters. Well done, Tom.

On 23 May 2009 while observing a group of four Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax au-ritus) fishing in the display pond north of the Malheur NWR, HQ, Harney Co., Oregon, I noticed that one of these cormorants had managed to catch a ten to twelve inch long trout. With great ef-fort it was attempting to quickly swallow this sizable fish without drawing too much attention to its precarious situation. Very soon several of its fellow cormorants saw the real issue at hand and rushed to help remove the of-fending fish stuck in their bud-dies bill and throat. With much splashing and evading its fellow fishing fiends this fish-weighted cormorant tucked its bill down against its upper chest as it half raised up out of the water and began pushing off towards the

cattails near the edge of the pond. In making an effort to out-maneu-ver the three trailing cormorants it attracted unabated attention to its catch.

Now about half way out on the same pool were two adult Ameri-can White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorynchos) in fine breed-ing horn and plumage. Being the very opportunistic fishers they are, these two great birds skipped across the pool‘s surface with great orange webbed feet pushing them as both landed in the midst of the very focused cormorants still offering aid to relieve their fellow of this trout jammed half in his throat head first. Two of the cormorants side slid out of the way in an effort to stop from being swam over by the very exuberant pelicans in their rush to reach the struggling fish bearing cormorant. Suddenly one of these pelicans thrust forward to try and grab the fish out of the bill and throat of the cormorant.

The cormorant twisted off to the right and away from this attack, holding the half swallowed fish high in the air trying to get the trout down and out of sight only to run head on into the second pelican which promptly opened its huge gape and enveloped the cormorants entire head, fish and neck deep into its large orange-pink pouch and then tried to close its mandibles. The cormorant’s wings now went into action as it desperately backpedaled in an effort stop a fate worse than just losing a fish. Staring down into the pelicans deep orange/red gullet caused this cormorant to re-assess the true value of the object of this whole confrontation. In an instant the cormorant had jerked

its neck and head out from the pelican’s monstrous maw. This is when I noticed that the trout had somehow been lost in this fif-teen second encounter, no doubt spiraling down into the pelicans gut. Now that the ownership of the fish was settled forever the cormorant shook its head several times and swam off to the east as if nothing had happened. The two pelicans readjusted their wings and slowly paddled apart out into the pool soon to take off to the north and return to the distant blue line that was Malheur lake.

The American White Pelican is a well known opportunistic fisher that will often take fish from a number of bird species (Johnsgard 1993). I have noticed wintering pelicans below McNary Dam on the Columbia River watching and keying on the California, Ring-billed and Glaucous-winged Gulls as they patrol the tailrace coming out of the dam for the many dead and stunned fish that emerge. The instant a gull locates a fish and plunge dives down in an effort to grab at the fish a pelican or two will fly in, flush the gull off, reach under in the current and take the fish ( Denny per. records). I be-lieve that a high percentage of the fish taken on the Columbia and Snake Rivers at dams are by this almost parasitic method.

IntroductionOne of the most rapidly growing aspects of birding and ornithology is the use of advanced technology to understand migration and population trends. Many tools are available to do this, and one of the most accessible to birders is a joint project between Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon called eBird (www.ebird.org), an online data archiving and distribution database. Cornell has organized many efforts to turn the casual birder into the “citizen scientist” who, through their birding observations, can gather information useful to science and conservation (Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 2003). eBird is Cornell’s latest citizen science tool, and is revolutionary in that it allows birders to see how their data fit into regional and national patterns, all in real time. eBird has many visualization tools that allow users to explore patterns in bird distribution and abundance. To test and demonstrate the usefulness of eBird visualizations,

we analyzed eBird data to answer a simple question about the timing of Orange-crowned Warbler (Vermivora celata) spring migration in Oregon. Our question was: Can latitudinal differences in the timing of spring arrival be observed using eBird?MethodsAfter logging on to eBird, the View and Explore Data tab was selected and within this screen, the Maps function was selected. Orange-crowned Warbler was entered in the Species Selection box, and location was configured so that data could be examined by county. Oregon was selected from within the United States, and on the following screen, each desired county was selected. The following western Oregon counties were used in the analysis: Curry, Josephine, Jackson, Douglas, Coos, Lane, Lincoln, Benton, Linn, Polk, Marion, Yamhill, Tillamook, Clatsop, Washington, Columbia, Multnomah, and Clackamas. Each selected county generated

an individual URL-based eBird query (see Fig. 1 for an example from Jackson County).Data from each county-specific query were downloaded by clicking the Download Histogram Data function, which contained frequency calculations and number of checklists submitted, separated by year (2004-2008). Because eBird data are continuously entered by users, query results can differ depending on the day a query is executed. All data used in the analysis were downloaded on a single day, May 14, 2008.Data were lacking in some areas of Oregon, therefore we combined counties into 2 regions, southwestern Oregon and northwestern Oregon, for analysis of spring arrival timing. Southwestern Oregon consisted of Curry, Coos, Jackson, Josephine, and Douglas counties, and northwestern Oregon consisted of Lane, Lincoln, Benton, Linn, Polk, Marion, Yamhill, Tillamook, Clatsop, Columbia, Washington,

Multnomah and Clackamas counties. By combining counties into regions, data were pooled into two broad spatial areas, allowing for a finer temporal analysis and more precise spring arrival timing results. Data were modified in an Excel worksheet to calculate frequency of occurrence (number of checklists that included Orange-crowned Warblers divided by number of checklists submitted) by week, with all years combined, in northwestern and southwestern Oregon.ResultsAnalysis of the data using a fine temporal approach (weekly) and broad spatial scale (regional) showed the first major wave of Orange-crowned Warblers arriving in the southwestern portion of the study area during the week of March 22, when

they were observed on about ten percent of checklists submitted from 2004-2008 (see Table 1 and Figure 1). Orange-crowned Warblers appear on a similar percentage of checklists in northwestern Oregon three weeks later, during the week of April 15. Also during the week of April 15, a second, larger pulse of Orange-crowned Warblers appears on checklists in southwestern Oregon, with higher frequencies lasting for about three weeks. Meanwhile, frequencies remain relatively constant in northwestern Oregon, with Orange-crowned Warblers being recorded on about ten percent of checklists. By the week of May 8th, frequencies begin to decline in both the southwestern and northwestern regions (see Table 1 and Fig. 1).DiscussionBased on our results, it appears

that latitudinal differences in spring arrival timing of Orange-crowned Warblers can be observed in two western Oregon regions using eBird. The observed difference corresponds with the south to north pattern of spring migration in Neotropical migrant songbirds. In addition to Orange-crowned Warbler frequencies occurring earlier in southwestern Oregon, frequencies were also higher in this region. This could be caused by increased bird numbers or increased bird detectability due to behavior, or to increased observer effort (see Table 1 for frequencies and number of checklists submitted). Decreased frequency in the northern portion of the state at this time could result from a portion of the overall migrant Orange-crowned Warblers settling onto breeding territories in the southern portion of the state.

Multiple peaks in frequency in southern Oregon could be associated with a subspecies-specific migration pattern being seen, with the first peak representing the arrival of summer resident birds, and the second being migrant birds passing through to breeding grounds farther north. The predominant breeding subspecies of Orange-crowned Warbler in western Oregon is V. c. lutescens, which arrives before the northern-breeding V. c. celata (Dillingham, 2003).One serious challenge for this analysis was low checklist submission rates. This was addressed by using frequency calculations, in combination with conducting the analysis using broader spatial units. Increased use of eBird within the Oregon birding community would help provide better checklist coverage across the state. Audubon chapters in southern Oregon have teamed

up with northern California chapters, and the Klamath Bird Observatory – Redwood Sciences Laboratory Avian Data Center to increase awareness of eBird in the Northwest through development of a regional eBird portal called Klamath-Siskiyou eBird (www.ebird.org/klamath-siskiyou).An additional challenge, which we did not address in this analysis, was observer experience. To account for observer experience levels, one would need to evaluate the skill level of the persons submitting checklists. In this analysis, we assume no variation in observer’s abilities to identify Orange-crowned Warblers over region or time.eBird is a highly useful tool that makes the observations of birders relevant and useful for ornithologists and conservation communities. It also allows users to combine their personal observations with observations

from throughout the Western Hemisphere, connecting birders with the science of conservation by demonstrating how the casual observer can contribute to continent-wide coordinated bird monitoring efforts.AcknowledgementsWe would like to thank Doug Robinson, Jeff Harding, and Brian Sullivan for reviewing this article and providing many helpful suggestions and improvements.Works CitedCornell Lab of Ornithology. “Citizen Science.” 2003. Continued from Page 107 Circle Birding: John Gatchet

This circle includes a portion of Multnomah County as well. A Vesper Sparrow on Oak Island in this county is the only bird that was not found in Columbia County.

I hiked a great deal and many times walked 10-12 miles see-ing most of the non-road areas of Sauvie Island. Oak Island is a great place to hike as well and with drier weather I was able to walk from this island to the Gilbert River. The hiking was so enjoyable that it probably took me away from River watching that may have netted me more bird

species.

When the water was high my wife and I traveled by Canoe all through the Sauvie Island area of Columbia County. While canoe-ing the flooded area we assisted a fisherman who was lost and did not know how to get back to the Gilbert River from Sturgeon Lake. It was a unique experience canoe-ing close to birds in the flooded trees.

The total number of species for the year was 199. Highlights above Scappoose were Long-eared and Pygmy Owl, Mountain Quail, Dusky Grouse, Townsend’s Solitaire and Gray Jay along Holiday and Pisgah Home Road.

The Bonnie Falls area of Scap-poose Creek along the Scappoose-Vernonia Highway had nesting Dipper. Honeyman Road through Scappoose Bottoms had Brewer’s Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Chipping Spar-row, Golden Eagle, Rough-legged Hawk and Short-eared Owl.On Sauvie Island Rentenaar Road had Northern Goshawk, Clay-colored Sparrow, Yellow-headed and Rusty Blackbird as well as shorebirds such as Short-billed Dowitcher, Semi-palmated Plover and Black-bellied Plover. Walking from the end of Rentenaar Road to the mud flats of Sturgeon Lake the best shorebirds were Sander-ling, Semi-palmated and Solitary Sandpiper.
