It felt like only yesterday we were seeing in the New Year, however a quick look back between popping the champagne for 2014 to now really shows that time flies when you’re having fun! It was full steam ahead in the earlier part of year with none other than award season! The US team jetted off to LA for the prestigious Oscars with the team in full force assisting clients on the ground with red carpet access to all of the biggest events, not to mention hosting a few of our own soirées in celebration of the week. As per usual the Elton John party saw the celebs flocking and once again the event did not disappoint with our very own home grown, now turned global superstar, Ed Sheeran performing to an adoring A-list crowd. He was truly amazing!

Not letting the US team have all the fun our UK team were arguably even busier with a host of big awards including BAFTA, Empire Awards and not forgetting the BRITS. James Cordon put down the BRITS mic in his final year presenting and what a final year he had. As the performance announcements rolled out during the course of January and February it was very clear it was going to be one of the biggest line-ups the BRITS, or even the O2 had ever seen, with the likes of: Katy Perry, Arctic Monkeys, Bastille, Rudimental, Bruno Mars, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure, Lorde, Pharrell Williams and the incredible Queen B, aka Beyonce Knowles taking to the stage. The highlight of the night was the exclusive after party at The Arts Club, hosted by Sony with the who’s who of music in attendance.

We are heading full throttle towards Cannes Film Festival and our team as ever are prepping for our yearly film festival camp out. Our team will be on the ground for the duration of the festival, looking after clients from all over the globe, offering access to all the red carpet film premieres, VIP parties and we will as always, be producing a series of VIP events during the course of the festival. The highlight of the festival being our collaboration with MR PORTER, but more on that later!

Potentially one of the biggest event announcements for our events team is the move of Victoria’s Secret Fashion show to London on 2nd December at Earls Court. After years of rumours and expectation, it’s official, the Angels will be gracing London and the Total Management phones have not stopped ringing since the announcement was made. I’ve never felt more popular being inundated with requests!

It’s not just the events team who have been busy over the last couple of months; our Total Access team have also seen some exciting projects and partnerships formalise. A new venue partnership established with restaurateur Mark Hix saw us host a drinks evening at his new city venue Hixter. The team were delighted to see a fantastic turnout of familiar faces and new members allowing our network the opportunity to mingle and converse whilst enjoying one of London’s new hotspots. The feedback received was phenomenal and we are already looking forward to the next one!

Total Access membership is fast growing globally and we have now been appointed as Virtuoso Agent meaning our members will have access to an even stronger network of lifestyle solutions around the globe. We are very excited to have won some incredible corporate clients in the US and are assisting them all over the globe, including Buenos Aires, Cannes, São Paulo, Las Vegas, Berlin, Paris and many more locations. The Total Access events team are assisting with unique entertaining and event concepts in all these global destinations and are really showcasing what our team can do, travelling with our clients to help them implement their vision effortlessly. The last 6 months has been incredible for us within the US market and the growth and success has to be attributed to our skilled and dedicated US team who are growing from strength to strength.

Another exciting announcement is our new partnership with brand extraordinaire NET-A-PORTER and we will be producing a series of events with MR PORTER which will see our team travel from Cannes, across the pond to New York and onto the Hamptons this summer. With a series of exclusive event concepts planned by our team, we will be connecting our network of clients and luxury brands to provide a truly incredible event platform for all associated.

THE RESTAURATEUR

Richie Notar: one of the most creative minds in the hospitality world

ichie Notar is one of those names that has surpassed industry celebrity status and is recognised both in the US and globally as a pioneer in the hospitality world. With a CV that spans some of the most iconic establishments of the last 50 years, it is no wonder the man who started out at Studio 54 under the watchful eye of Ian Schrager, then moved on to open Nobu, now runs

his own company with an elite collection of his own ventures, including the iconic Harlow restaurant in mid-town Manhattan. As we hover on the brink of his new openings in Harlem and the exciting Harlow East ‘pop up’ in The Hamptons, we wanted to grab a few words of advice and inspiration with the man in possession of the most enviable little black book in New York.

R

What inspired you to get involved in the industry?

It wasn’t intentional, I took a dishwasher’s position at Steve Rubell’s restaurant and club at the age of 15 because my friend also worked there. Steve thought I’d be a good fit in his next club, which turned out to be Studio 54.

You were with Nobu for 19 years, aside from the growth and expansion, do you see many changes from the original concept?

When we opened the first Nobu in 1994, Japanese food was not mainstream to the degree it is now, I feel we had something to do with that awareness. Most of the Japanese restaurants were very traditional, I couldn’t see it that way and instilled a more funky atmosphere and approachable vibe to the front of house, giving it more personality to match Nobu’s innovative food. The concept

has pretty much stayed the same but now they build the restaurants with bars, the original didn’t have one.

Studio 54 attracted an impressive clientele over the years, who would you say was the most memorable guest?

Wow, there were many! I got close to Andy Warhol and that was somewhat life changing, but sitting with Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger upstairs watching the dancing was pretty amazing. And I can’t forget Grace Jones! There are too many to list, to be honest.

Ian Schrager now puts together some of the most iconic new hotels, can we anticipate any future collaborations?

We’ve threatened to do something together, it would be an honor for me. Perhaps in the near future.

TOTA L M A N AG E M E N TTHE JOURNAL ISSUE NO.3

The Lenox Lounge looks like an exciting new venture, what attracted you to Harlem and the revival?

It was Jazz great Wynton Marsalis who excited me about the project. It was up for grabs and I asked him what he thought and he explained to me the history there. After seeing how enthusiastic he was just talking about it, I got the bug. It’s the right time up there too because there is a renaissance happening and Harlem is swinging again!

What are your favorite dishes on the Harlow menu and what can we expect at Harlow pop up in Sag Harbor?

We have awesome Oysters! Everything our Chef Danny Ye puts out is great but he’s been using some of his Korean heritage to enhance things like Halibut and spice dishes up with Kimchi. We’re essentially a fish restaurant so being out in the Hamptons we’ll focus on the bounty around us and source mostly local fish and produce. The restaurant is right on the water.

What brought about the idea to introduce the ‘pop up’ dining concept to your restaurants?

The term is overused these days, but I did an outpost of Nobu in Easthampton over 10 years ago. It’s good marketing and it keeps your brand in the eyes of your city based customers as well as attracting new ones. It’s not easy, and you pretty much have no summer downtime, but it’s the nature of the beast.

‘As long as the food is good and people have fun, it’s really no different around the world.’

Given your experience, network, ventures and more you must have a pretty eclectic social life – what would be your ideal night out in NYC?

Theres are two answers: there’s the great night where there are loads of parties and events going on, so you get in the zone and hit all of them and just have a magical New York night!

ABOVE Richie is reviving the infamous Lenox Lounge in HarlemRIGHT The Oystre Bar at Harlow

BELOW LEFT Richie and his wife JaneBELOW RIGHT Consulting Chef Danny Ye

What has been your biggest challenge over the years and how have you overcome it?

I think expansion. It’s nice to be asked to do projects around the world and it’s tempting to say yes to all of them. I’m in the people pleasing business, but if you don’t have great people to place in your operations you will fail. So I’d have to say the biggest challenge is having the bandwidth to accomplish what you’d like to do. I’m of the nature of hiring from within my group.

What is Notar Hospitality’s vision, could we see a European project in the near future?

After 20 years of only one concept, it’s nice to show range. I plan on putting up projects in the same circles as I did with Nobu around the world, just varying concepts. I’m extremely close to finaliz-ing something in London. I love London and have spent a lot of time there with my two previous restaurants. My wife Jane went to school in London and she has lots of family there as well as our friends. Her uncle is actually Terry Wogan, funnily enough. I wasn’t aware of his popularity at the time but certainly realized quickly just how famous he is. We get along great, I think the world of him.

Just over a year after opening Harlow in New York City – Richie’s first solo venture – Notar Hospitality Group is bringing the restaurant to Sag Harbor, extending the chic, fun loving atmosphere and fresh seafood-focused fare guests have come to love in the city. The approachable menu of simple yet elegant cuisine will be created by Harlow’s Executive Chef Danny Ye. Similar to the New York menu, Ye will offer an extensive raw bar selection and menu favorites from the city location, such as the Branzino (pictured) with wasabi stem gremolata and crispy hearts of palm, Salmon with chipotle corn, Asian pear & cilantro salad in a miso reduction, and Lamb Meatballs with Kochujang marinara, mint, and pickled red onions. Tartines on the current lunch menu, including lamb, mushroom, and grilled shrimp varieties, will also have a presence out east as the restaurant focuses on lighter fare that evokes the summer. The space will feature 200 indoor seats with an additional 180 seats outdoors on the dock, overlooking stunning views of Sag Harbor Bay. The restaurant will incorporate nautical themes, integrating pops of white and blue with rich wood throughout. The restaurant remains one of the best locations on the south fork for sunset views and a waterfront meal.

Harlow is located at Long Wharf at Bay Street, Sag Harbor, NY 11963. The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week.

Alternatively, what I like about NY and what I am attracted to is hitting a little neighborhood joint, unassuming but inviting, casual and cool where I don’t have to work the room.

‘They develop their palate and technique there, then quit, get full sleeve tattoos, open a 40 seat restaurant, play loud rock music in the kitchen and experiment to the degree that new cuisines are being hatched.’

Who do you have your eye on with young, up and coming chefs and restaurant concepts in the city?

Well as I said, I nurture within my organization, so my farm team is my first interest. With that said, it’s not so much one person, rather the mindset of some up and coming chefs that I find appealing and what’s setting the trend these days. Meaning, there are these chefs who have worked for all the big guys, Jean George, Daniel Boulud, Marco etc. in very stern and disciplined kitchens where you can’t say a word and they’re run in a military fashion. They develop their palate and technique there, then quit, get full sleeve tattoos, open a 40 seat restaurant, play loud rock music in the kitchen and experiment to the degree that new cuisines are being hatched.

I call them “Rebel Chefs”, this is what excites me. And of course food goes in trends as well, everything these days has gone the quick casual route. I think the tide is changing here in NY, going back to a bit of glamour which is what I did with Harlow. Europe is still digging the American comfort food trend. Hamburgers are huge in Paris, places like Shoreditch in London feel like Williamsburg Brooklyn with reclaimed wood and Hipsters. It’s all very cool but it will go Glam again, and I suppose then we’ll go Retro and back to Grunge etc, etc. As long as the food is good and people have fun, it’s really no different around the world.

biza is probably one of the most versatile island destinations you can jet to over the summer. She holds the crown of being the wild party animal amongst her Balearic sister islands, but

this is only one of her facets.

As the season has officially kicked off, 2014 is set to be the hottest yet. We urge you to take in everything the island has to offer, be it a full on party night in Ibiza with international DJs or a yoga filled retreat in the hills; Ibiza has all you need from one extent to the other and everything in between.

Relax and unwind in your own private enclave at Hotel Hacienda to create your very own unique retreat gazing out to the turquoise coloured sea or set yourself in full swing at Grand Hotel Ibiza. If a hotel isn’t your thing why not go home from home in one of Ibiza’s most luxurious hill top villas. Whether it be über cool and super modern you are looking for, or a traditionally chic hill-top home, Ibiza holds the key.

Soak in the rays in one of the many Ibethian calas or at an ‘all luxuries taken care of ’ Beach Club, like the recently launched Amante. Learn where the coolest sunset cocktail bars are and find the perfect restaurant spot to take you through to the early hours. Although Ibiza may not give out the health freak aura, believe it

I or not the island’s zen will enlighten you. From rooftop Yoga at 38 Degrees North Yoga Rooftop, to Yoguilates (which is a combination of Yoga and Pilates) at Atzaró the island will give you the best detox and relaxation options you can possibly imagine.

Beach clubs, restaurants and the biggest nightclubs are all at your finger tips, but it’s best to know what to expect. We have taken some time out to explore the island and make sure we are ahead of the game to offer our top-tips for 2014. As with all the places we travel to it is about knowing the right people who will take you to the right places and that’s when Total Access becomes your personal go-to.

RECOMMENDATIONS by

ISLAND ESCAPES

FORMENTERA

The island of Formentera which is only a 30 minute boat trip away is a must when visiting Ibiza, it is there for your day of

relaxation and recuperation. Charter a speed-boat or sail over on one of Ibiza’s super yachts with a group of friends and spend the day sipping mojitos and testing the local cuisine at the famous

Juan Y Andrea beach restaurant.

BEACH

PUNTA GALERA

Bring towels, drinks and rock proof shoes - this is the island’s best kept secret. Likeminded people will fill the breathtaking rock slates that form this beach to soak up the rays. It’s the

perfect spot for cliff diving and sunsets.

DINING & NIGHTLIFE

BAMBUDDAH

Carretera de San Juan, km8.5, Santa Eulalia del Río, Ibiza

Bambuddah really encompasses what Ibiza is truly about. Fun, sexy and free loving atmosphere - you will turn up for dinner and sink into the early hours without even noticing. We know this is a regular reoccurrence when on the island but if you are

looking for a night with fantastic food, great drinks and beautiful people look no further.

HOTEL & SPA

AZTARÓ

Atzaró Agroturismo, Carretera Sant Joan km15, Ibiza

The concept of agriturism is more widely spread in the southern part of the European continent. The idea of holidaying

in a farm and submerging soul and mind into nature is becoming ever so popular, and with the widespread food

revolution (or evolution), people’s consciousness is increasingly drawn to the farm to fork ideal. And to be quite frank, why not

stay in a farm, when you can still have all 5 star comforts without feeling guilty.

BEACH DINING

EL CHIRINGUITO

Playa Es Cavallet, Ibiza

The beach house of El Chiringuito is located on Playa Es Cavallet which is renowned for its views; Dalt Villa (Ibiza old town) to the left, Formentera to the right and surrounded by a sandy white beach and crystal clear waters. This is a beach chic

hotspot where you can enjoy an international menu for breakfast and lunch whilst working on the perfect tan.

NIGHTLIFE

LIO IBIZA

Paseo Juan Carlos I, Puerto Marina, Ibiza Town, Ibiza

Be prepared to embrace a full sensory experience. We recommend the tables just by the pool to enjoy the show.

Dinner is excellent but the shows are even better. Again, it’s one of those places where dinner and nightlife entertainment will

merge into one.

BEACH DINING

SUNSET ASHRAM

Cala Conta, Sant Agustí Des Vedra, Sant Josep De Sa Talaia, Ibiza

The Ashram is a good spot for a drink, beach sunset, dinner and DJs. Enough said.

DINING

CAMI DE BALAFIA

Sant Joan de Labritja Road, Ibiza

Looking for a typical Ibithencan grill – Balafia serves delicious free-range chicken, lamb chops and steaks. Be aware that

vegetables are limited to hand cut chips and tomato salads. This place is popular so early reservations are advisable and cash in

hand please!

NIGHTLIFE

USHUAIA

Playa d'en Bossa 10, 07817 Sant Jordi de Ses Salines, Ibiza

Now counting down the minutes to the grand opening party, Ushuaia will not fail to disappoint summer 2014. Known for the international big names which headline throughout the

season and great pool parties.

NIGHTLIFE

THE U.S. EVENTS REPORT

espite what felt like one of the longest and coldest winters, the Total Management US team have been kept on their toes, with what has been one of the busiest

quarters for events. Things kicked off with one of the hottest music awards ceremonies this side of the Atlantic. The Grammy’s, is where we experienced first-hand amazing live performances, and after party’s that saw our team bump into the worlds ‘who’s who’ of the music industry! Back on the East Coast, the city that never sleeps stayed true to its name as NYC made history and played host to one of the world’s most renowned sporting events, the Super Bowl XLVIII.

The Total Management team were on hand at the MetLife Stadium and throughout the weekend, we managed our clients’ private suites, assisted with VIP access to some of the best celebrity hosted parties across town: all celebrating the success of the final team the Seattle Seahawks. From sport to fashion, we can ensure you that we were ‘FROW’ (front row) for all things Fashion Week and held one of the strongest guest list inventory for all the had-to-be-at parties! It didn’t stop there, from New York to Los Angeles again, Total Management were in town for the hottest premiere action, we are of course talking, Academy Awards. From, the highly renowned Vanity Fair Party, to the star studded Elton John Academy Viewing Party and of course, to the Academy Awards. We were getting client’s red carpet ready for their cars to take them to the hottest events that the City of Angels had to offer over Oscars weekend.

Coachella, in Palm Springs, started the festival season off with a bang, with the likes of Outkast, Bastille, and Lorde headlining various stages. One of the largest attended sets by Calvin Harris and surprise performances by none other than Beyoncé with her sister Solange Knowles. The annual festival, that is played across two weekends, has one of the largest celebrity followings, from Hollywood A-listers, high society and fashionistas alike. With our VIP Passes we were in all the right areas for celeb

spotting, not to mention the best views of any pick of stage from the exclusive VIP area. If you missed out this year, then register your enquiry with the team early for 2015, as it’s bound to be another big hit. If this has caught your attention, then there’s plenty more from where that came from. Throughout the summer and across America there are a number of events that just have to be experienced; of course, we are referring to the likes of the MTV Awards, Kentucky Derby, Met Ball, Miami Fashion Week, and Billboard Music Awards. The Miami Fashion Week last year saw the world’s top models and celebrities descend to South Beach for a week of shows, parties and more parties, all in aid of showcasing next season’s top summer wear. For the sporting enthusiasts amongst you, then the upcoming US Open is one to watch. With our London team wishing for another Gland Slam title for Murray, ticket holders will be able to watch all the court action live, from prime location seats offering the best view in the stadium.

Thoughts are now naturally turning to how best enjoy what the warm weather can offer. Hold that thought: as the events and hospitality team at Total Management will be able to assist in gaining access to some of the summer’s biggest and best events across the States.

Finally, from all at the team in the US, we are sad to hear that the annual Victoria’s Secret Show will be moving from its home in NYC, to a new location in London, but fear not, our London team will be keeping you up to date on all the soon to be announced acts and other hot news associated with this exclusive and highly anticipated event.

W

Harlow restaurant with co-host Richie Notar. This will be an exclusive occasion to announce our summer event in the Hamptons to the New York press and key influencers. Harlow is by far one of our favourite hot spots in the city and when we found out Richie was launching “Harlow East” in Sag Harbor for the summer season, it was our first choice of location to hold our Hamptons summer event in association with MR PORTER. Already tongues are wagging and it is being piped as one of the biggest parties on the social calendar. The save the date has been released to our invited guests and we already have some incredible faces set to attend. We are partnering with Surf Air along with some other fantastic brands for our gift bags... With plans still underway, we can’t say too much, but this is going to be a party you won’t want to miss!

To end the series we are bringing the final event back home to London which sees us partner with the stunning Parisian brand Berluti. All we can say is, it’s going to be a very unique twist on the traditional summer BBQ!

It’s a privilege to be asked to partner with such a fantastic brand as NET-A-PORTER and we are excited about bringing our members some amazing opportunities through our partnership.

CHILTERN FIREHOUSE LIGHTS UP LONDON

TOTA L M A N AG E M E N TTHE JOURNAL ISSUE NO.3

n our recent visit to the newly opened restaurant, housed within the confines of a former fire

station - a beautiful redbrick structure which towers over a quiet street in Marylebone, we discovered that not only is the food rather impressive, but the staff utterly charming and the restaurant, decked out in low hanging lights and elegant taper candles in old fashioned holders, is a haven for all things beautiful. Chiltern Firehouse really is the sort of buzzy place that makes you feel alive, where you can indeed abandon all your morals, order several bottles of wine and smoke too many cigarettes before flagging a taxi, thinking that you are in fact an A-list celebrity. Going back to the décor, we were told that Head Chef Nuno Mendes prefers thin candles as they make less mess. Clearly the Michelin starred chef knows a thing or two about elegant décor.

O

Having built up his experience through stints at the Coyote Café, Jean-Georges and El Bulli, Mendes was named Head Chef of the much-loved but short-lived Bacchus. He then opened a supper club and developed some very innovative ideas of how a restaurant should be. After spending time at Bethnal Green’s Town Hall Hotel, where his restaurants Viajante

and Corner Room captivated diners in equal measure (Viajante gaining a Michelin star), we now find Nuno happily nestled in the impressive open kitchen at Chiltern Firehouse where he is regularly seen chatting with the guests and making sure that everyone, guests and staff alike, are happy.

A restaurant veiled in both hype and mystery, the cult of Chiltern Firehouse has whipped us all up into frenzy. Not only are reservations hard to come by, if not impossible – think Fat Duck style 3 month wait lists, if you are lucky, Chiltern has firmly positioned itself as one of London’s leading restaurants in little over two months since its opening. Could it be the sizzling combination of design by fashionable American hotelier André Balazs, the fact that the ‘secret’ smoking area is accessible through the toilets via a mirrored door, or simply the fact that the restaurant opening took place during fashion week, thus securing the nod of the

worlds’ glitterati? Who knows, and for whatever reason, Chiltern is currently onto a winner, serving up an impressive menu and equal measures of charm through its cosy decoration and vintage carpet rugs that sit comfortably under the chic marble tables and banquette seating. Signature dishes include the much talked about crab donuts and the beef short rib, both of which we devoured and would unequivocally go back for alone. The melt in the mouth chicken wings are a must, as is the monkfish. To top things off, a small yet perfectly formed dessert menu offers diners a choice of sweet (but not too sweet) treats including chocolate tart and fresh and zesty apple panna cotta. All in all, the menu and décor alone offer enough delights to keep you occupied so really your fellow diners shouldn’t even come into it…oh but they do.

We aren’t ones to kiss and tell but our fellow diners were glittering…and by that we mean A-list. Oh Chiltern Firehouse, how fashionable you are! Well if the lighting makes you and everyone else around you look like a model or film star and the attentive staff make you feel famous, we do believe that in itself is a rec-ipe for success.

*Chiltern Firehouse is open for dinner throughout the week and offers a brunch between 11am – 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
