March from the Ballet “Corso Donate”Joseph Lanner. Medium

A contemporary (and some would say, rival) of Johann Strauss I in 19th century Vienna, Joseph Lanner was, for a time, more popular and widely performed than his associate. After a much-publicized separation of the two musical giants, Lanner was appointed to the coveted post of Musik-Direktor of the Redoutensale in the Hofsburg Imperial Palace. There, he conducted concerts, performed as a soloist and composed new works for the court orchestra. This March from the Ballet “Corso Donate’ was written in September of 1841 and is an outstanding example of the Austrian march genre. A superb Bourgeois edition brings the work to the wind ensemble repertoire. 3016871 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 90.00 3016872 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15.00

PiccadillyErik Satie. Medium

Along with the movement to Impressionism during the latter part of the 19th century, the French were caught up with the popularity of American ragtime and early jazz. Erik Satie’s piano piece Le Piccadilly, composed in 1903, was his own tribute to the syncopated dancing rhythms and lively melodies that made the genre so appealing. This fine realization brings the best of the genre and the eccentricities of the composer to the capable wind ensemble. A concert treat.3016891 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 90.00 3016892 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15.00

Two Preludes by Giuseppe VerdiGiuseppe Verdi. Medium

As a matter of his compositional craft, Verdi was not reluctant to display some of his most powerful and dramatic music in his overtures, preludes and ballet scenes. His preludes before individual acts of the operas were shorter than his overtures, but they do foreshadow the mood and intense drama of the ensuing scenes. Pared together in this transcription are preludes from Ernani and Atilla, his fifth and ninth of 26 operatic works. 3016861 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 90.00 3016862 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15.00

From Maine to OregonJohn Philip Sousa. Medium

John Philip Sousa is well known throughout the world for his successes with the Sousa Band, and for writing the most popular marches ever written. Some of his marches actually were created from music originally written for an operetta, From Maine to Oregon, based on musical themes from Sousa’s operetta, The Glass Blower, which was renamed The American Maid. This new edition is created from the original parts as played by the Sousa Band performing under the direction of “The March King” himself.3012731 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 60.00 3012732 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8.00

In MemoriamJohan Halvorsen. Medium-Advanced

Johan Halvorsen’s In Memoriam, Opus 30 was written for the great Norwegian poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson. The two men became very close friends and Halvorsen composed a funeral march in Bjornson’s honor upon his death in 1910. The music’s link with Bjornson is underscored by the fact that it opens with a paraphrase of the Norwegian national anthem. At the peak, it suddenly falls away, and following a roll of the timpani, the anthem is played in its entirety. Vocal parts sung by members of the ensemble contribute to the overall effect and make this a most memorable and moving work.3014901 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .85.00 3014902 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15.00

King of TerrorW.P. Chambers. Medium

William Paris Chambers (November 1, 1854 - November 13, 1913) was an American composer, cornet soloist and bandmaster who wrote several cornet solos and nearly 90 marches. His most famous marches are Chicago Tribune, The Boys of the Old Brigade, Hostrauser’s, Northwind and Revelation. The King of Terror March was published by J.W. Pepper in 1882. Its title is thought to be inspired by a carnival or midway attraction. The march is fast and furious, with all the drama and ferocity that’s reflected in its name. Although one of his earlier marches, King of Terror contains all of the characteristics of Chambers’ famous bravura band writing.3015741 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .70.00 3015742 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10.00

Little Masquerade SuiteJohan Halvorsen. Medium-Advanced

In 1922 Halvorsen was commissioned to write incidental music for the bicentennial performance of a comedy written by Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. Masquerade calls for a diverse pallet of music depicting ballet and dance scenes filled with silly play and gaiety. As a result, the music is graceful, as found in Cotillion, playful as in the Bacchanale, and burlesque for the Rooster and Grotesque dances. The original “Masquerade Suite” for orchestra consisted of eight dances; this arrangement for concert band comprises the first, third, fifth and sixth movements of Halvosen’s original suite. A delightful programing selection displaying humor, wit and elegance in the four brief movements.3015381 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 110.00 3015382 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15.00

Suite AncienneJohan Halvorsen. Medium-Advanced

In 1911 Johan Halvorsen composed incidental music for a production of Ludvig Holberg’s play “The Lying-in Room” and later arranged the music into his “Suite Ancienne Op. 31.” The suite in five movements contains some of Halvorsen’s most descriptive musical output. In harmony and instrumentation, he bursts the bounds of his baroque canvas, imbuing his music with the unmistakable stamp of Neoclassicism. The five movements consists of: 1. Intrada, 2. Air con variations, 3. Gigue, 4. Sarabande, and 5. Bouree. The arranger, Colonel John Bourgeois, has also arranged Halvorsen’s In Memoriam, Op. 30 and the four-movement “Little Masquerade Suite.” He notes that the “Suite Ancienne” may be played as a complete entity or each of the movements may be performed individually. 3015751 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 200.00 3015752 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .25.00

Sunflower Slow Dragarr. John R. Bourgeois. Medium

The music in Sunflower Slow Drag is full of brightness and levity, having the light, upbeat character found in many of Joplin’s happiest compositions. After a brief introductory passage, the jaunty main theme appears in all its ragtime cheer, typical of Joplin’s works. The closing is especially reminiscent of the ending of his more famous The Entertainer and while not as well known, this cheerful four minute works deserves the same fame and popularity. Originally scored for chamber winds, optional parts have been included for larger ensembles. 3015371 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .70.00 3015372 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10.00

Transit of VenusJohn Philip Sousa. Medium

Sousa’s Transit of Venus March was written in 1883 to celebrate the 1882 transit of Venus, an event that happens every 243 years when Venus passes between the Sun and the Earth. The work was erroneously thought to be lost for over 100 years until a piano transcription published in 1896 was found in the Library of Congress. This edition received its first performance by the United States Marine Band on June 6, 2012, which is also the date the actual transit of Venus occurred. 3016151 Band Set & Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 90.00 3016152 Additional Score . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15.00
